Brawijaya University develops GIS-based IoT for disaster mitigation

Malang, East Java, Indonesia, Sep 30, 2022 - (ACN Newswire via SEAPRWire.com) - Brawijaya University has developed an Internet of Things (IoT) technology based on the Geographic Information System (GIS) to mitigate disasters in Pronojiwo district, an area affected by the eruption of Mount Semeru.A lecturer on urban planning at the Faculty of Engineering of Brawijaya University, Adipandang Yudono, Ph.D., has developed an Internet of Things (IoT) technology based on the Geographic Information System (GIS) to mitigate disasters in Pronojiwo district, an area affected by the eruption of Mount Semeru. (Photo: ANTARA/HO-Humas UB)"The data generated by IoT can be crucial information in dealing with disaster-affected areas," a lecturer of urban planning at the university's Faculty of Engineering, Adipandang Yudono, Ph.D., said here on Thursday. After the Semeru eruption some time ago, the IoT technology was used to enter a number of data regarding the number of refugees, logistics, the distribution of survivors, the location of the post, medicines, and food, among others, he informed.According to Yudono, during the recovery period, the GIS-based IoT technology has been used to map the condition of agriculture, livestock, as well as damaged schools in affected areas."This data can be used as a support system for determining areas that can be rehabilitated or determining lines for the protected areas," he said.Meanwhile, a volcanology and geothermal expert at Brawijaya University, Prof. Sukir Maryanto, said that the IoT system can work via two methods: through human media and the use of sensors. When using human media, the IoT works in three stages, namely entering or inputting data, which can then be managed using a database, he informed. The database is then forwarded to the operational dashboard. The operational dashboard contains infographics on the distribution of activities, the number of activities, and their graphs. Meanwhile, electronically, the IoT inputs data based on electronic sensors installed somewhere."In the future, the geospatial-based IoT can be used for planning activities for the recovery of areas affected by the Semeru eruption, such as reforestation," he said.According to the chairperson of the Independent Learning Program for the Independent Campus (MBKM), Semeru, Dr. Sujarwo, the IoT for disaster mitigation is supporting the activities of students involved in the Semeru humanitarian project."This (IoT) makes it easy, especially in identifying damage and providing better information, such as the number of damaged buildings and data on affected areas," Sujarwo said.In addition to the use of IoT for disaster mitigation, the MBKM Semeru has also initiated a "school and town watching" system, which is also being carried out with the help of schools and communities. The disaster mitigation effort in schools or "school watching" involves identifying elements in schools that are at risk, analyzing the impact of risks, and finding solutions to problems when a disaster strikes.Meanwhile, "town watching" is a program wherein people living in an area, namely residents, children, and students, go around the area to see and identify dangerous places when a disaster occurs."Town watching" seeks to increase public awareness on disaster management, identify environmental and surrounding vulnerabilities, and identify community capacities or resources that can be used when a disaster occurs. In addition, it also identifies the main problems in the community and finds solutions to these problems.Written by: Yashinta Difa Pramudyani, Editor: Suharto (c) ANTARA 2022 Copyright 2022 ACN Newswire. How to Use News Releases as a Marketing Tool

HONG KONG – Surprisingly, 20% of NovationWire’s respondents advised they do not even use a press release as a part of their marketing strategy. As we have mentioned in the past, sending out a press release when Users have newsworthy information to share makes sense. The key word here is “newsworthy.” The information should be newsworthy and useful to journalists or customers’ general audience. It is important to note that when Users send out insignificant news on a regular basis, it will only alienate yourself and company from journalists. And just like the “boy who cried wolf,” people will not pay attention when they find that customers’ news is usually trivial, exaggerated or misleading–Users must be credible. What is customers’ typical preferred reach? In the pre-Internet world, unless Users were a big national company, the news Users wanted to announce would more than likely have been either local or hyperlocal news. Times have changed, and the Internet has opened opportunities for businesses to have customers reaching them from around the globe. In NovationWire’s survey, the majority of businesses distributing a news release on a newswire service selected ‘national’ as their choice of reach. The next most popular distribution choices were ‘multiple cities,’ ‘state wide’ and ‘mainly an online audience.’ The main goal for distributing a press release was to garner the attention of journalists who would write a story covering the news. About 20% of businesses stated that their goal in distributing a press release was to ‘increase their search engine rankings.’ Recently, one of NovationWire’s reps was asked by a client if they could add ‘back links’ and if those back links were ‘do follow.’ We advised the client that the reason for submitting a press release should be to garner the interest of a journalist and not to increase search engine rankings. An excellent question that many would like the answer to is ‘What is the most popular day to send out a press release?’ NovationWire’s winner, by a landslide is Tuesday! Yes – the reason for Tuesday is this: On Fridays, many people check out early-mentally and physically. Do Users want a great start to the weekend? Start it early! The weekends are just naturally not a business news type of time. By the time Monday rolls around, many people are cleaning up from Friday and preparing for the week ahead, which leaves Tuesday as the best option for having customers’ news released. That being said, a good percentage of customers still believe in Monday and kicking of the week with a press release. The actual time of day when the press release is distributed does not seem as important to press release distributors as it once did. Until not too long ago, many people would love to have their press release scheduled for a ‘set time’ early in the morning. Interestingly, a majority of respondents advised that a particular set time is no longer a big deal to them, as long as it is early in the morning of the day of their release. For smaller companies, we typically don’t recommend 9 a.m. Eastern time, as this can conflict with a lot of ‘big company’ publicly traded company news. A significant number of NovationWire’s customers tend to prefer 7-8 a.m. Eastern as their premium distribution time. Do Users have customers’ own personal media lists? If Users do, then Users are with the majority of PR professionals who send their News Releases through a press distribution service and also use their own lists to target journalists they know, according to a majority of NovationWire’s respondents. Newsrooms are a technology on the marketing horizon. Why? Because done properly, they can be an excellent research resource for journalists to access everything from high resolution images, media contact information and more. Online newsrooms are an important emerging technology, so it was not surprising to learn that the large majority of respondents still do not have a public facing newsroom. We expect that will change in the near future. By applying a few points we have mentioned, we hope that this will increase the success of customers’ next press release. Football: Premier League top three need penalties to scrape wins

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND (REUTERS) - Premier League leaders Manchester City and title challengers Liverpool and Chelsea all needed penalties to secure victories on Saturday (Dec 11), leaving the top of the table unchanged. Manchester City beat Wolverhampton Wanderers at the Etihad thanks to a Raheem Sterling spot kick after a controversial penalty award. Liverpool also won by a single goal against Aston Villa, managed by former Anfield favourite Steven Gerrard, with the visitors upset at the decision to award a penalty when Mohamed Salah went down in the box before converting the 67th-minute winner. A Cristiano Ronaldo penalty in the 75th minute helped Manchester United to an unconvincing 1-0 win at bottom team Norwich City, their second successive league victory under interim manager Ralf Rangnick. Chelsea midfielder Jorginho scored twice from the spot, including a stoppage-time winner, as Thomas Tuchel's side beat Leeds United 3-2 at Stamford Bridge. England forward Sterling's 100th Premier League goal was just enough to earn leaders City victory over 10-man Wolves. Wolves had limited City in the opening period before their striker Raul Jimenez's dismissal for two yellow cards in quick succession in first-half stoppage time shifted the odds against them. City dominated from then on, edging in front through Sterling's penalty - a decision that required a lengthy VAR check - in the 66th minute, with the ball striking Joao Moutinho. Referee Jon Moss ruled the ball had hit the Portuguese midfielder's arm and although the television images suggested it had struck him in the upper ribs, VAR backed the on-field decision. At Anfield, there was a surprisingly low-key reception for Gerrard, the Liverpool-born former captain and Champions League winner, before a game where his Villa team set about frustrating the home side. Liverpool dominated the first half with Villa keeper Emiliano Martinez doing well to save efforts from Andy Robertson and Salah. After the break, Martinez produced a brilliant reflex stop to keep out a powerful header from Virgil van Dijk but Liverpool's pressure finally paid off when Salah went down in the box under challenge from Tyrone Mings. The Egyptian fired home an unstoppable spot-kick to secure the win for Juergen Klopp's side. "We've lost to a soft penalty because if you watch it properly, Tyrone's been fouled first," said Gerrard. "The disappointing thing is that the referee hasn't gone to look at it," he added. Leeds went ahead against the run of play in the 28th minute when Daniel James went down under a challenge by Marcos Alonso to win a penalty that Brazilian playmaker Raphinha stroked home. But the Blues clawed their way back into the game when Alonso, trying to atone for his earlier error, stole the ball from Stuart Dallas, exchanged passes with Timo Werner and crossed for Mason Mount to score with a first-time angled shot. Tuchel's men turned the game around when referee Chris Kavanagh, after a VAR check, awarded them a penalty after a Raphinha challenge on Antonio Rudiger and Jorginho fired high into the net. United lacked ideas at Norwich, with home keeper Tim Krul making two fine saves in the second half before Ronaldo won and converted his spot-kick against the second-half run of play. A late save by David De Gea and a last-gasp intervention by substitute Eric Bailly denied Norwich a draw, lifting United to fifth place in the standings behind fourth-placed West Ham on goal difference. Football: Maddison rescues point for Leicester at Southampton

SOUTHAMPTON, ENGLAND (REUTERS) - James Maddison scored a second-half equaliser as Leicester City twice came from behind to force a 2-2 Premier League draw with hosts Southampton on Wednesday (Dec 1) in a match delayed for 18 minutes by a medical emergency in the crowd. Jan Bednarek and Che Adams scored first-half goals for the home team either side of a Jonny Evans strike for the visitors to lead 2-1 at halftime. A medical emergency in the crowd during the break forced a delay to the second period, but once the action got back under way, it was the visitors who were much the brighter as Maddison soon equalised. The draw moves Leicester up to 19 points, while Southampton are on 15 points. The home side were in front inside three minutes when Leicester goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel saved brilliantly from Mohamed Salisu's shot, but Bednarek reacted quickest to turn the ball home. It was the third time in four games they took the lead inside five minutes. Leicester, who have not kept a clean sheet in the Premier League since a 1-0 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers on the opening day of the campaign, equalised midway through the first half. Home goalkeeper Alex McCarthy could only parry Wilfred Ndidi's shot into the path of Evans, who had a simple finish. But Leicester-born Adams, a boyhood fan of the Foxes, headed the home side back in front when he connected with Nathan Redmond's deflected cross to give them a 2-1 halftime lead. After the 33-minute interval, the visitors were back on level terms early in the second period as Maddison twisted and turned in the box and drilled the ball low past McCarthy at his near post. Leicester forward Jamie Vardy had an excellent chance to grab the winner when he was one-on-one with McCarthy, but produced an uncharacteristically wild finish over the bar.

Football: Gerrard’s Villa win again to end Palace’s unbeaten run

LONDON (REUTERS) - Aston Villa continued their resurgence under new manager Steven Gerrard when they claimed a second consecutive Premier League win by beating Crystal Palace 2-1 at Selhurst Park on Saturday (Nov 27). Goals from Matt Targett and John McGinn moved Villa up to 11th spot, level with 10th-placed Palace who got a consolation through Marc Guehi in added time, on 16 points. The defeat was Patrick Vieira's first at home since being appointed Palace manager and their first since losing at Liverpool in September. Gerrard also became the first Villa boss in 23 years to win his first two Premier League games. "We can't get carried away, it has been a positive couple of weeks. The players have been fantastic in their application. We had to dig in at times today but we managed to get over the line which is nice," Gerrard told the BBC. Villa took advantage of Palace's vulnerability on set-pieces when Ashley Young's corner in the 15th minute was delivered deep into the box, where Targett controlled the ball and shot low through the crowd to score. Targett's opener was his first Premier League goal in over two years and only his third in the top flight. "The analysts and us spoke about set pieces in the build up to the game. We know they (Palace) are not great at defending them," Targett said. Gerrard praised his set-piece specialist for the opener. "His job is to identify weaknesses in the opposition side. The players deserve all the credit for going and implementing that goal," he said. Palace had more possession in the first half but were unable to conjure up shots on goal as their midfield struggled to create chances with Villa's Marvelous Nakamba and Jacob Ramsey keeping midfielder Conor Gallagher quiet. Villa looked like being reduced to 10 men when substitute Douglas Luiz was red-carded for a seemingly reckless challenge but the visitors got a reprieve when VAR intervened and the referee watched the replay, downgrading it to a yellow. Villa doubled their lead late in the game when a flowing move down the left found McGinn on the edge of the box and he curled his shot past the outstretched arms of Vicente Guaita. Palace finally scored in stoppage-time when Cheikhou Kouyate's cross to the near post found Guehi, who poked the ball past Martinez, but Villa held on for the three points.

Football: Wolves held to goalless draw at Norwich

NORWICH (REUTERS) - Lowly Norwich City continued their upturn in form when they held sixth-placed Wolverhampton Wanderers to a 0-0 draw at Carrow Road in the Premier League on Saturday (Nov 27). After picking up just two points from their opening 10 games, Norwich had won their last two games - the latter under new manager Dean Smith. Norwich had the better of the contest against Bruno Lage's Wolves but were unable to carve out enough real openings. Wolves played conservatively and the nearest they came to scoring was a Joao Moutinho shot that was saved by goalkeeper Tim Krul after a poor back pass from Grant Hanley. Norwich right-back Max Aarons forced Wolves keeper Jose Sa into action just before halftime with a low shot after a strong burst into the box. Although the home side were on top after the break, Sa had little to do other than get down to keep out a toe-poked effort from Finnish forward Teemu Puki after good work from Lukas Rupp. Norwich are second-bottom on nine points, two points from the safety zone, while Wolves have 20 after 13 games. Smith will be hoping his side can continue their improved form when they play at fellow strugglers Newcastle United on Tuesday. "I think we looked a good team today and restricted a good club to few chances. We looked really organised without the ball, we adjusted to the tweaks we had to make," said Smith. "The players can take an awful lot of belief from what they are doing ahead of the match against Newcastle," he added. Wolves will be hoping to get back to winning ways when they host Burnley on Wednesday. "We were compact and when we weren't Jose Sa made a couple of saves," said defender Romain Saiss. "It is another clean sheet which is good for us as defenders and as a whole team. Maybe we need to be more selfish up front. We will keep this point and the clean sheet and try and win the next game on Wednesday." Football: Spain end Italy’s unbeaten run to reach Nations League final

MILAN (REUTERS) - Spain ended European champions Italy’s world record 37-match unbeaten run as Ferran Torres scored twice in a 2-1 win at the San Siro stadium in an entertaining Nations League semi-final on Wednesday (Oct 6). Italy, trailing by two goals at the break, had to play the entire second half with 10 men after captain Leonardo Bonucci was sent off but showed real determination as they sought to avoid their first loss since a September, 2018 defeat by Portugal. “This what matches are like, sometimes certain episodes can influence them,” Italy coach Roberto Mancini said. “This is a disappointment. We should have stayed with 11 men, we made a mistake that you can’t make at this level,” he added. Spain will face the winners of Thursday’s semi-final between France and Belgium in Sunday’s decider. Torres put Spain ahead in the 17th minute, steering a left-wing cross from Mikel Oyarzabal past Italy keeper Gianluigi Donnarumma into the far corner. Donnarumma, booed by AC Milan fans angered at his recent move from the club to Paris St Germain, nearly gifted Spain a second when he fumbled a harmless Marcos Alonso effort against the post but Bonucci scrambled the ball clear. Any lingering questions about the importance of the match had been blown away by the blistering start and it was by no means one-way traffic, as Italy started to open up the Spanish defence. Federico Bernardeschi went close to an equaliser with a low drive from the right which Spain keeper Unai Simon pushed against the post and Lorenzo Insigne missed a great chance, firing wide when in space on the edge of the box. The Azzurri, who beat Spain on penalties in the Euro 2020 semi-final in July, went a man down in the 42nd minute when Bonucci was sent off for a second yellow card after elbowing Sergio Busquets. Fine cross Torres sent Luis Enrique’s side in with a two-goal lead at the break when he was left unmarked to head in another fine cross from Oyarzabal. Italy brought on Giorgio Chiellini at the break, the veteran defender and leader having been a surprise omission, and despite Spain playing with real swagger, the Azzurri stayed in the game. Spain had given a debut to Barcelona’s 17 year-old midfielder Gavi, who became their youngest ever player after just three starts for his club – but there was no hint of his inexperience in a confident and composed performance. Manuel Locatelli (left) of Italy in action against Spain's 17 year-old Gavi during the match. PHOTO: EPA-EFE More on this topic   Related Story Football: Italy's Donnarumma booed by Milan fans in Nations League game Enrico Chiesa was the source of Italy’s brightest moments and he hit the post from a tight angle in the 61st minute Oyarzabal headed wide after excellent work from another teenager, winger Yeremi Pino, and Marcos Alonso should have sealed the win in the 78th minute but his low shot was well saved by Donnarumma. Italy ensured a tense end to a quality match when they pulled a goal back seven minutes from the end, as Chiesa took advantage of hesitant Spanish defending, broke from the halfway line and slipped the ball to substitute Lorenzo Pellegrini to convert. But Italy’s run was over and with it ended the dream of a Nations League title on home soil to follow their Euro triumph. For Spain though, the revenge for the Wembley loss was sweet. “We knew it was a special game, we went out in the semi-finals of the Euros and what better way to beat them at home in other semi-finals,” Torres said.

Football: Chiesa strikes to give Juve huge Champions League win over holders Chelsea

TURIN, ITALY (AFP) - Federico Chiesa proved to be a big game player once again with the only goal in Juventus' 1-0 Champions League win over holders Chelsea which could kick-start their faltering season. Sat 10th in Serie A after a succession of unconvincing performances domestically, Juve top Group H with a perfect six points thanks to a superbly taken winner 10 seconds after half-time from Chiesa, one of Italy's stars at Euro 2020. Massimiliano Allegri's side took down the European champions, despite missing starting forwards Paulo Dybala and Alvaro Morata, with a disciplined performance that sucked the life out of the Blues and restricted them to very little in front of goal. "We showed the Juventus spirit tonight, and that's what the coach asks of us," Chiesa, who has been criticised by Allegri this season, told Amazon. "There has never been any problem between me and the coach, I do what he asks of me. When Juve start off poorly there is always a lot of unnecessary noise: we all want to take the club back to the top." Juve are three points clear of both Chelsea and Zenit, who they play in Saint Petersburg in three weeks. "The players put in a great performance against the European champions. We were solid defensively and conceded very few chances. (Wojciech) Szczesny barely had a save to make," said Allegri to Amazon. "We also missed some really good chances on the counter but I'm happy. We haven't conceded a goal, we have six points, it's another step towards qualifying." Chelsea dominated the ball in the early stages but it was the home side who had the first real chances of the game, both of which came after pouncing on sloppy passes in midfield. Chelsea held at bay Adrien Rabiot was barracked by the home crowd in the 16th minute when after sprinting away on a break with almost the entire Chelsea team still upfield, he elected to play a pass to Federico Bernardeschi which was completely mishit and rolled to Edouard Mendy. Four minutes later it was Chiesa's turn to show the Blues a clean pair of heels after pinching the ball, only for his low shot from a tight angle to drift just wide. Juve's gameplan of sitting in and stopping Chelsea from getting a passing rhythm going worked but they initially lacked a focal point and too often let off the hook a Chelsea team missing the dynamism of N'Golo Kante and Mason Mount. However they got the goal they deserved immediately after the break through Chiesa, who has had an uncertain start to the season but confidently met Bernardeschi's through ball to lash home the opener at the near post. It was Juve who were wondering how Bernardeschi didn't double their lead in the 64th minute when he tripped over his own feet with the goal at his mercy. And they were breathing a big sigh of relief with six minutes left when after a prolonged spell of Chelsea dominance Romelu Lukaku thumped wide after being nicely set up by Mateo Kovacic. The home crowd roared at the poor finish of Lukaku, former striker at their fiercest rivals Inter Milan, and right after Kai Havertz headed over the bar let out another shout of joy at the final whistle. 3 years’ jail for mum who abused her 2 daughters

SINGAPORE - A housewife who abused her two daughters, aged six and 10, breaking the older child's front teeth, was on Wednesday (Sept 29) sentenced to three years' jail. The woman's offences came to light when her 37-year-old husband returned home and found his daughter's teeth broken. He took the child to KK Women's and Children's Hospital (KKH) and the hospital later alerted the police. The abuse continued while the police were investigating her case and when she was out on bail. Before handing down the sentence on Wednesday, District Judge Kessler Soh addressed the woman, who appeared in court via video link, and told her: "Discipline (your children) if you must but do so appropriately." He also hopes that she will not "take it out" on her children again. On Sept 16, the mother, now 38, admitted to seven counts of abusing her daughters. Four other similar charges were considered during sentencing. The woman, who cannot be named to protect the victims' identities, also has a son whose age was not stated in court documents. A psychiatric report found that the woman was not suffering from any mental illness at the time of the offences. The court heard that in December 2018, her husband installed a closed-circuit television (CCTV) camera in the living room of their home for occasions when the children were left alone. On June 18, 2019, he discovered that the older girl's front teeth were broken. She told him that her mother had slapped and kicked her, causing her mouth to bleed. He took her to KKH without confronting his wife and the girl was given two days of medical leave. The father later checked the CCTV footage and found that his wife had assaulted both daughters on other occasions. Several clips of CCTV footage played in court showed the woman assaulting the girls by slapping, pinching and kicking them. She was also seen pulling the older girl's ears and dragging her into a bedroom by her hair. The police were conducting their investigation of the case when the woman reoffended, the court heard. This time, she threw a marker pen at the elder daughter's forehead on Dec 1, 2019. Her husband returned home later and alerted a child protection officer, who agreed to visit the home the next day. The woman then instructed the older girl to tell the officer that they were merely playing when a toy hit her. Football: Everton condemn Norwich to sixth straight defeat

LIVERPOOL (REUTERS) - Andros Townsend and Abdoulaye Doucoure were on target as Everton condemned Norwich City to their sixth straight Premier League defeat with a comfortable 2-0 win at Goodison Park on Saturday (Sept 25). Norwich have lost their last 16 Premier League games under manager Daniel Farke, having previously been defeated in 10 consecutive matches in the 2019-20 season when they were relegated. "We know it was a tough start with our fixtures... when you play the first four games against Liverpool, Man City, Leicester and Arsenal, no one expects us to win too many points... that does something to the mood and confidence of the team," said Farke. "We were definitely not the worse side today. It's not a situation where we will dance on the table, but it's not a situation where we wave the white flag either." A subdued first half sprung to life in the 28th minute when Norwich loanee Ozan Kabak was adjudged to have brought down Allan in the box following a lengthy VAR check and Townsend dispatched the spot-kick. Norwich offered little going forward in the first half and their only notable attempt came from Mathias Normann, whose shot from distance was palmed away by Jordan Pickford, who was returning to the side. The visitors were better in attack after the break, with Normann and Ben Gibson going close but Everton crushed any hopes of a comeback when Doucoure finished smartly in the 77th minute after being played in by Demarai Gray. Everton climbed into fifth place and Norwich stayed bottom of the table. Everton boss Rafa Benitez said he was pleased with his side's start to the season - 13 points from six games - but said the best was yet to come. "Watching (the players) in training, I expected we could do well, but in the Premier League you never know. I'm quite happy and I think that we will get better... I'm really pleased and hopefully we can carry on against Manchester United," Benitez said. Farke added: "We were compact from the first to the last second. We needed 20 minutes to get into the game and be brave in possession. But then we dominated the game a lot in the second half. Sadly we were on the wrong end of the key moments."

Football: Wolves claim first league win of season at Watford

WATFORD (REUTERS) - Wolverhampton Wanderers claimed their first three points of the Premier League season at Watford on Saturday (Sept 11) as Bruno Lage's side came away with a 2-0 victory after dominating the second half. Wolves, who lost their first three games 1-0, moved out of the relegation zone and up to 13th in the standings, two places above Watford who tasted their third straight league defeat without scoring. After a goalless first half, Wolves' constant pressure in the second period finally paid off in the 74th minute when Watford defender Francisco Sierralta attempted to clear a cross from a short corner but headed the ball into his own net. "I think in the first half it was a very good level but after the goal we were a little down. We need to continue working hard," Watford manager Xisco Munoz told BBC Sport. "The difference in the Premier League is in the box. If you create chances and don't score and they have chances and score. This is football, when you have the ball in your box, these things (the own goal) happen." Wolves doubled the lead nine minutes later when new signing Hwang Hee-Chan pounced on a loose ball in a goal mouth scramble to prod home. The game had been short of goalscoring opportunities but Moussa Sissoko had an early effort on his home Watford debut saved by goalkeeper Jose Sa while Wolves' wing back Nelson Semedo had an injury time shot palmed away by the goalkeeper. Semedo had another glorious chance to give the away team the lead when Raul Jimenez neatly flicked the ball to release the Portugal international into the box but his shot flew wide of the far post, with manager Lage looking on in disbelief. Up next for Watford is a trip to Norwich City while Wolves host Brentford.

Football: Benzema double helps Real to winning start at Alaves

VITORIA-GASTEIZ, SPAIN (REUTERS) - Karim Benzema picked up where he left off last season by scoring twice to fire Real Madrid to a 4-1 win away to Alaves in their opening game of the LaLiga campaign. Real had an uninspiring first half in Carlo Ancelotti’s first league game since taking charge of the club for a second time but Benzema settled their nerves by blasting the ball into the net in the 48th minute after being teed up by Eden Hazard. Defender Nacho Fernandez added to Real’s lead eight minutes later, sliding in to stab a Luka Modric through ball into the net from close range. Benzema scored a scrappy second goal in the 62nd but moments later Alaves pulled one back when striker Joselu slotted in a penalty after a foul by goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois. Substitute Vinicius Jr added a final goal for the visitors in stoppage time, netting with a diving header as he met a cross from debutant David Alaba. French striker Benzema was Real’s standout player last season with 23 league strikes, more than a third of the team’s goal haul, and his form earned him a recall to the France squad for the first time in six years. Ancelotti marvelled at Benzema’s performance and said he was a better player than when he coached him at Real between 2013 and 2015, when the Frenchman was more of a support striker for Cristiano Ronaldo. “To call Benzema just a striker does not do him justice. He is a very complete player, far more complete than five years ago,” the Italian coach said. “He is the one who finishes our moves off but he also reads the game so well.” The Italian also criticised his side for their sluggish start but was pleased with how they improved after halftime. “The first half we were a little slow when we had the ball and when we didn’t have it, we needed to press with more intensity, the game was slow and that’s not what we wanted,” he added. “But we were much better in the second half, we showed more intensity and had more quality.” Real got to play in front of fans for the first time in a league game since March 2020 although fewer than 4,000 spectators were allowed into Alaves’ Mendizorrotza stadium due to the local government’s coronavirus restrictions. The few supporters present were nearly given an early treat when midfielder Pere Pons pounced on a loose ball inside the area but failed to keep his shot under the crossbar. Alaves also appealed for a penalty in the first half against Real’s Lucas Vazquez when he blocked a cross although the referee correctly ruled that the ball had struck his chest rather his arm. Madrid lined up with a front three of Benzema, Hazard and Gareth Bale, who was making his LaLiga return after spending last season on loan at Tottenham Hotspur. Hazard has hardly got going in his two seasons with Real but looked sharp while Bale had a couple of attempts on goal without causing goalkeeper Fernando Pacheco too much trouble.

3 challenges for S’pore to tackle: Addressing anxieties over foreigners, while staying open

Turning inwards is against Singapore's fundamental interests, said Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong. The country needs to complement its local workforce with talent from around the world. Only then can more firms invest here and create more jobs for Singaporeans. Naturally, citizens become worried about competition for jobs when the number of work pass holders is large. Tennis: Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz becomes youngest ATP finalist in 13 years

UMAG, CROATIA (AFP) - Spain's Carlos Alcaraz became the youngest player in 13 years to reach an ATP final when he defeated compatriot Albert Ramos-Vinolas in the semi-finals of the Umag claycourt tournament on Saturday (July 24). The 18-year-old Alcaraz defeated the top seed 6-2, 7-6 (7/3) and will face French veteran Richard Gasquet, 17 years his senior, for the title on Sunday. World number 73 Alcaraz is the youngest man to reach a tour final since 2008 when Kei Nishikori made the Delray Beach championship match when he was also 18. Gasquet, 35, reached his first final in three years when he defeated German qualifier Daniel Altmaier 7-6 (7/2), 3-6, 6-3 after three hours and 11 minutes on court. Fourth seed Gasquet, whose last final appearance was at Bastad in 2018, will be seeking a 16th career title on Sunday. Football: Wijnaldum didn’t feel ‘Liverpool love’

LONDON (AFP) - Georginio Wijnaldum has said social media abuse was behind his decision to leave Liverpool, explaining he "didn't feel love" from a section of the club's support. Wijnaldum - who signed for Paris Saint-Germain after leaving on a free transfer - joined Liverpool in 2016 from Newcastle United. He made more than 200 appearances while lifting the Premier League and Champions League titles before leaving at the end of last season. Wijnaldum told The Times: "Every day in training and in the game I gave everything. "Liverpool meant so much to me. There was some moment when I didn't feel love and appreciated there. "Not by my teammates, not the people at Melwood (Liverpool's training ground). I know they all loved me and I loved them. It was not from that side, more from the other side." He added: "There was a moment when I didn't feel loved. In the last two seasons, I had it a few times. "The fans in the stadium and the fans in social media were two different things," he said. "In the stadium, I can say nothing bad about them. They always supported me. "On social media if we lost I was the one who got the blame - (claiming) that I wanted to leave. There was a moment when I was like, 'Wow, if they only knew what I was doing to stay fit and play every game'." Briton caught on video not wearing mask on MRT train to go on trial in August

SINGAPORE - A man caught on video not wearing a mask on an MRT train in May will be claiming trial to his charges next month. Benjamin Glynn, 40, whose pre-trial conference took place on Friday (July 23), is expected to appear before District Judge Eddy Tham for a two-day trial on Aug 5 and 6. The Briton faces two charges under the Covid-19 (Temporary Measures) Act, as well as one count each of harassment and being a public nuisance. He allegedly failed to wear a mask while travelling on an MRT train from Raffles Place station to Holland Village station between 11.06pm and 11.31pm on May 7. He is then said to have caused annoyance to the public during the trip by declaring: "I will never wear a mask." In a video that was circulated on social media, the Briton is seen telling the other commuters: "I'm very religious... I hate seeing uncles, granddads with a mask on." He then rejects a mask when a fellow commuter offers him one. The video also shows a commuter leaving her seat when he sits down next to her. On May 9, Glynn was at the ground-level lift lobby of Allsworth Park condominium in Holland Road at around 12.30am when he allegedly used threatening words while addressing two police officers - Assistant Superintendent Alvin Quek Chin Han and Inspector Chee Xiu Quan. The Briton is said to have hurled an obscene word at them when he said: "I'm going to... drop you." He is also alleged to have adopted a "boxing stance". Glynn first appeared in the State Courts on July 2 and was not wearing a mask when he arrived at the main entrance of the building. Football: Southgate accepts responsibility for penalty ‘gamble’ in Euro 2020 final

LONDON (AFP) - England manager Gareth Southgate said it was his decision to put teenager Bukayo Saka as his team's final penalty taker in their shoot-out loss to Italy in Sunday's (July 11) Euro 2020 final. The home side, playing in their first major final since 1966, lost 3-2 on penalties after a 1-1 draw at Wembley. Southgate also brought on Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford deep into extra time specifically to take spot-kicks, and they also both missed as England blew an early advantage in the shoot-out. "I chose the takers," Southgate told ITV. "I'm unbelievably disappointed not to go one step further. "We decided to make the changes at the end of the game, but we win or lose together as a team." Arsenal winger Saka, who had only made five international appearances before the tournament, saw England's final penalty saved by Gianluigi Donnarumma, after Jorginho had wasted the chance to secure the title for Italy when his effort was kept out by Jordan Pickford. "That was my decision to give him (Saka) that penalty," said Southgate, who missed the crucial penalty when England lost in the Euro '96 semi-final to Germany on home soil. "We worked with them in training. It was a gamble."
