TOKYO, Oct 21, 2022 - (JCN Newswire via SEAPRWire.com) - Hitachi Astemo, Ltd. has developed a prototype 360-degree stereo vision system for automated vehicles traveling on regular streets. Based on multi-camera 3D sensing, the all-surrounding sensing system is both high-resolution and highly accurate. Most of the current automated driving systems are limited to highway driving. To enable automated driving systems to be used on general roads, they need to accurately recognize the entire road environment around the vehicle, including a complex mix of objects such as pedestrians and bicycles. Radar and LiDAR systems with high-ranging accuracy, however, still face cost issues before they can see widespread adoption, and all-surrounding-area camera systems, which although are superior in terms of cost, are mainly based on a monocular camera that is still continually evolving to improve accuracy and other issues.Hitachi Astemo, together with the Research and Development Division of Hitachi, Ltd., leveraged their strengths in stereo camera technology to develop a prototype of the 360-degree stereo vision system, using multi-camera 3D sensing that enables distance measurement with the stereo camera technology. Instead of the conventional module consisting of two cameras with the same view angle and being nearly parallel to each other, the camera layout has been made more flexible to use a combination of approximately 10 cameras with different angles of view, including non-parallel cameras to provide stereoscopic 3D vision. By integrating multi-camera 3D sensing into a single in-vehicle camera system, the system realizes 360-degree stereo vision, with a cost advantage, high accuracy and resolution.By generating highly accurate distance information in stereo and all around the vehicle, the system can detect such elements as the distance of a vehicle traveling in the adjacent lane, or a two-wheeled vehicle slipping through a line of cars from behind in a traffic jam. It can estimate the relative speed and direction of movement, and apply this information for vehicle control to avoid collisions and entanglement at intersections. In addition to basic object recognition of objects such as cars, motorcycles, pedestrians, and traffic lanes, the recognition function also includes turn signals, red lights, and brake lights to predict the behavior of other vehicles; as well as traffic signals, road signs, road edges, and free space areas available for driving--all of which are necessary to identify for while driving on ordinary roads.Furthermore, Hitachi Astemo has improved reliability and environmental resistance in camera sensing such as features to resist water droplets and dirt adhering to the lens surface, or shielding the entire lens in the snow. The AI has learned malfunction patterns caused by these factors and can identify malfunction factors that occur in each camera, thereby preventing malfunctions.Going forward, Hitachi Astemo will continue to strengthen its 360-degree stereo vision systems that combine cost advantages with high accuracy and resolution, as well as improved reliability and environmental resistance, with the aim to expand the scope of automated driving systems for use on general roads.Hitachi Astemo is committed to strengthening its business and delivering technological innovation through a strategic business portfolio, which consists of the Powertrain & Safety Systems business, Chassis business, Motorcycle business, Software business and Aftermarket business. Aiming for a better environment globally and growth around the pillars of "green," "digital," and "innovation," we will deliver highly efficient internal combustion engine systems; electric systems that reduce emissions; autonomous driving for improved safety and comfort; advanced driver assistance systems; and advanced chassis systems. Through such advanced mobility solutions, we will contribute to realizing a sustainable society and provide enhanced corporate value for our customers. For more information, please visit the Hitachi Astemo website: www.hitachiastemo.com/en/. KARIYA, JAPAN, Sep 27, 2022 - (JCN Newswire via SEAPRWire.com) - DENSO Corporation today announced it has expanded the detection angle of its vision sensor, increasing the sensor's ability to recognize pedestrians and bicycles around a vehicle to improve road safety. The vision sensor is used on some grades of the SUBARU Legacy Outback, announced on April 13, 2022, for the North American market, and the all-new SUBARU Crosstrek(1), unveiled on September 15, 2022, for Japanese market.Vision sensorMany traffic accidents occur when bicyclists and pedestrians suddenly enter roadways from the side. In Japan, such accidents account for about 30% of all traffic accidents involving pedestrians and about 70% of traffic accidents involving children under the age of 12.(2) Drivers are likely to overlook small children and fast bicycles entering the road suddenly from the side, and even if they notice them, struggle to react in time and accidents may occur. Recognizing the importance of the issue, the new car assessment program in Europe (Euro-NCAP) has made it necessary for new vehicles to be able to detect pedestrians and bicyclists from the side of roadways.DENSO decided to tackle this issue and succeeded in expanding the detection angle of its vision sensor to 128 degrees(3). This has made it possible to detect bicycles crossing the road when driving at low speed and meets the assessment conditions(4) stipulated by Euro-NCAP. Thus, the sensor will help to prevent accidents at intersections and other areas where vehicles, motorcycles, bicyclists and pedestrians come and go at various speeds.A wider detection angle can detect many more objects, which means non-hazardous objects are also detected. This makes it critical for the sensor to decipher which is a threat and which is not. For example, when the sensor detects a bicyclist about to cross the road, if the cyclist brakes and stops, the vehicle can keep driving without a collision. However, if the autonomous emergency braking is activated, the vehicle behavior is unpleasant for the driver and is likely to cause other hazards due to its unexpected behavior. The advantages of a wider angle and practical usage have been achieved by detecting objects well in advance with AI technology, determining whether such objects actually pose a risk based on time-series estimation, and minimizing unnecessary vehicle behavior.DENSO remains committed to developing safety products that are satisfactory to users with the aim of spreading safety features to all vehicles.Below is the image comparing this product with a typical product (detection angle of 100 degrees). By expanding the detection angle to 128 degrees, it is possible to detect crossing bicycles more quickly.(1) The all-new Subaru Crosstrek will be officially announced in autumn, 2022(2) Source: Number of traffic accidents by violation/age bracket of pedestrians (whose negligence is serious compared other parties involved in accidents) in "2019 Traffic Statistics" published by the Institute for Traffic Accident Research and Data Analysis(3) The detection angle of vision sensor is based on DENSO's measurement.(4) Assessment conditions for hazard detection in a situation where a bicycle crosses a road at 20 km/h when one's own vehicle is cruising at 10 km/h. The conditions are considered to be difficult to meet in terms of the angle of view; they have been met by expanding the detection angle.References:SUBURU 2023 Outback for North Americawww.subaru.co.jp/news-en/2022_04_13_163459/All-New Subaru Crosstrek for Japanwww.subaru.co.jp/news-en/2022_09_15_174049/ Copyright 2022 JCN Newswire. TOKYO, Jul 14, 2021 - (JCN Newswire via SEAPRWire.com) - NEC Corporation (NEC; TSE: 6701) announced today the development of an AI technology for supporting doctors in determining if colorectal lesions are neoplastic or non-neoplastic. NEC developed a new technology, called "Cx20," while seeking to assist in the early detection of colorectal lesions. Cx20 has already met the requirements for CE marking, a European safety, health and environmental protection standard, and will be integrated in the medical device AI diagnostic support software "WISE VISION Endoscopy" (1), with sales expected to start in Europe later this year. The Cx20 function supports the identification of disease. During examinations, suspected lesions are automatically detected through video taken by endoscope devices. Doctors then extract still images (left) and analysis results are soon displayed (right)This software connects and interacts with existing endoscopic equipment and automatically notifies users if a lesion is possibly neoplastic based on images captured during endoscopy procedures. The software then becomes an extra tool immediately available to assist endoscopists in the differentiation of lesions and reduces the burden on patients.Colorectal cancer originates from precancerous lesions (colorectal neoplastic polyps) and it is possible to suppress its progression by detecting and removing lesions at an early stage during endoscopy procedures. It is, however, sometimes difficult for endoscopists to visually distinguish between neoplastic and non-neoplastic lesions during endoscopy examinations, resulting in unnecessary biopsies and removal of non-neoplastic lesions, thereby causing additional stress and discomfort to patients. Colorectal cancer is said to be the second-largest cancer (2) in the European region, and the latest version of WISE VISION Endoscopy, which launches first in Europe, promises to help doctors address this challenging issue. To improve the chances of identifying if colorectal lesions are possibly neoplastic, and so to help endoscopists in their decision process, NEC developed a new technology where the learning power of AI is used to combine information of endoscopy images and data from the findings of expert physicians. Specifically, the technology analyzes still images of lesions taken with endoscopy devices, and if the AI determines that a colorectal lesion is likely to be neoplastic a "High possibility" notification message is displayed.NEC and the National Cancer Center Japan have been collaborating since 2016 to develop a technology that automatically detects suspected colorectal lesions during endoscopy examinations. NEC began sales of software incorporating this technology in January of this year (3). With the addition of this function in Europe, WISE VISION Endoscopy aims to help reduce the burden on doctors and patients by providing additional and immediately beneficial support during the examination process. In developing this solution NEC applied its face recognition technology, belonging to its portfolio of cutting edge AI based technologies (labelled "NEC the WISE"), which has been highly evaluated by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) in the United States (4).In the future, NEC will further promote joint research with the National Cancer Center Japan to further enhance the performance of its AI technology and to assist endoscopists with its usage.About WISE VISION EndoscopyThis software can be connected to endoscopes from leading endoscope manufacturers (5). SINGAPORE - A local company is being investigated for manufacturing surgical masks here without a licence, the Health Sciences Authority (HSA) said on Friday (June 11). This is the first time a firm is suspected of that action. The manufacturing was observed taking place in an unhygienic and makeshift environment at Vision Empire International's facility in Ubi Crescent, with the masks placed in carton boxes and left out in the open. A total of 33 cartons, each containing about 2,500 masks, were seized. Under the Health Products Act, firms are required to have a licence from HSA to manufacture surgical masks. Vision Empire International was also suspected to have imported surgical masks from overseas before repackaging, rebranding and reselling them without having a licence to do so. Both manufactured and repackaged masks were sold under the brand Vision Empire Healthcare. They were sold on local e-commerce platforms for between $10 and $22 per box of 50 masks, according to preliminary investigations. Consumers who have made purchases are advised to stop using them immediately, HSA said. Both manufactured and repackaged masks were sold under the brand Vision Empire Healthcare. PHOTO: HEALTH SCIENCES AUTHORITY It added that these listings have been removed with the assistance of the platform administrators, and Vision Empire International has been directed to recall the products. Investigations are ongoing, the authority said. Manufacturers and repackers of surgical masks are licensed by HSA to ensure good quality and safety for use. The manufacturing was observed taking place in an unhygienic and makeshift environment, with the produced masks placed in carton boxes and left out in the open. PHOTO: HEALTH SCIENCES AUTHORITY The manufacturing was observed taking place in an unhygienic and makeshift environment at Vision Empire International's facility in Ubi Crescent. PHOTO: HEALTH SCIENCES AUTHORITY In its release, the authority said surgical masks from unlicensed facilities have not been verified to meet the standards of quality, filtration capability and breathability. "Sub-standard masks may not provide the desirable level of protection to the wearer," it added, noting that masks made, repackaged and/or stored in unsanitary conditions could be contaminated. "Wearing such masks may increase the users' risk of developing skin irritation, respiratory symptoms or infections," HSA said. It will take strong enforcement action against those who illegally manufacture and/or supply masks. Those who do so could be prosecuted and, if convicted, jailed for up to two years or fined up to $50,000, or both. TOKYO, May 28, 2021 - (JCN Newswire via SEAPRWire.com) - NEC Corporation (NEC; TSE: 6701) today announced the development of an AI technology for supporting doctors to detect neoplasia in Barrett's esophagus during endoscopic procedures. This is the world's first technology of its kind to comply with the requirements for CE mark labeling, a European safety, health and environmental protection standard (1), and is being released as WISE VISION Endoscopy, where it will soon be available in Europe to help doctors in the detection of Barrett's neoplasia (2). Provided by Professor Pradeep Bhandari: "Once the neoplasia is found, the system takes a still image and transfers it to the top right corner of a screen as a reference image for endoscopists. It also has a heat map which shows the area of the AI-predicted neoplasia."This software is connected to endoscopy processors and automatically notifies users of potential Barrett's neoplasia from images captured during endoscopic procedures.Barrett's esophagus is a pre-cancerous condition in which the inner lining of the esophagus is replaced by a lining that resembles that of the stomach. Worldwide prevalence of Barrett's esophagus is 1% of the entire population but much higher (7%) in patients with acid-reflux symptoms (3). Patients with Barrett's esophagus have 30-40 fold higher risk of developing cancer of the esophagus as compared to the normal population (4). However, if this cancer can be detected at an early stage, then it can be removed through the endoscope and a patient can be cured. Patients with Barrett's esophagus have to undergo regular endoscopy (every 2-3 years) to detect early cancer, but this is still challenging as the early changes of cancer are very subtle and difficult to identify. As a result, current recommendations are to take multiple random biopsies throughout the length of Barrett's esophagus to identify any focus of early cancer (5, 6). However, random biopsies are expensive and time consuming and are only performed in accordance with official clinical guidelines by an estimated 30-51% of endoscopists (7, 8, 9, 10). Consequently, it has been pointed out that up to 40% of neoplasia may be missed (7) resulting in delayed cancer diagnosis and poor outcomes for the patients. To help resolve this issue, NEC collaborated with Professor Pradeep Bhandari (Portsmouth, UK), Chair of the European Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ESGE) Research Committee, in development of this new technology to support doctors to detect Barrett's neoplasia during examination. WISE VISION Endoscopy has been trained with more than 1 million Barrett's esophagus endoscopy images, together with the knowledge of expert endoscopists, enabling it to meet the requirements for CE mark labeling. In developing this solution, NEC applied its face recognition technology that has been highly evaluated (11) by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) in the United States, and belongs to NEC's portfolio of cutting-edge AI technologies, "NEC the WISE."On clinical evaluation, WISE VISION Endoscopy could find more than 90% of Barrett's neoplasia (12). WISE VISION Endoscopy is expected to significantly reduce the neoplasia miss rate during endoscopy and improve the outcome for patients with Barrett's esophagus all around the world. The abstract applying this technology has received the Gut Award from the British Society of Gastroenterology (BSG), which was presented in the plenary session of the BSG Campus. It was also selected one of the best endoscopy abstracts in UEG Week Virtual 2020 held by United European Gastroenterology. "I am delighted that NEC, as one of the world's leaders in AI technology, has entered the field of endoscopy and developed WISE VISION? Endoscopy to detect and help manage Gastrointestinal neoplasia. Barrett's neoplasia can be very flat and easily missed during endoscopy, despite taking multiple biopsies. I worked with NEC to develop the Barrett's neoplasia detection arm of WISE VISION? Endoscopy and am super impressed by the speed with which NEC has produced this as the World's first AI engine to obtain the CE mark for notifying Barrett's neoplasia. "WISE VISION Endoscopy can notify very flat and subtle lesions and much faster than most endoscopists. Once the neoplasia is found, this system takes a still image and transfers it to the top right corner of a screen as a reference image for endoscopists. It doesn't stop here, as it also has a heat map which shows the area of the AI-predicted neoplasia. WISE VISION? Endoscopy is set to revolutionize the endoscopic detection and management of Barrett's neoplasia in the western world. I'm sure that clinicians involved in the management of Barrett's esophagus are looking forward to the dawn of this new (Wise) era in Endoscopy," said Professor Pradeep Bhandari, Chair of the ESGE Research Committee.About WISE VISION EndoscopyThis software can be connected to endoscopes from three leading endoscope manufacturers (13). By simply connecting an existing endoscope to a monitor and terminal equipped with the software, users can start using it immediately. The system issues sound notifications when a candidate lesion has been located, and the type and volume of the notification can be customized at any time according to user preferences. Moreover, a highly visible user interface allows intuitive operation, enabling specialists to smoothly proceed with examinations.
