Fujitsu and Sapporo Medical University launch joint project to realize data portability in the healthcare field

Fujitsu and Tokai University develop ultrasound AI tech to test quality of frozen tuna

TOKYO, Dec 21, 2022 - (JCN Newswire via SEAPRWire.com) - Tokai University and Fujitsu today revealed the successful development of a new technology to inspect the freshness of frozen tuna in Japan. Joint research focused on the development of novel ultrasound AI technology (1), resulting in the world's first technique to measure the meat quality of frozen tuna without the need to cut or damage the product. The new technology thus offers a new method to inspect the quality of frozen tuna without lowering its value, and may one day contribute to greater trust and safety in the global distribution of frozen tuna and other food products.The joint research will be presented by both parties at the Technical Committee Conference of the Society for Ultrasound Research (hosted by the IEICE) to be held in Hiroshima City, Hiroshima Prefecture, Japan, from December 22 to December 23, 2022.About the joint research1. Background and challengesDemand for tuna both in Japan and globally has increased significantly, with 15 countries fishing and producing more than 50,000 tons of tuna in 2020 (2). The recent global Japanese food boom has raised demand for high-quality tuna that is mostly used for sashimi (raw fish).Most wild-caught, natural tuna is rapidly frozen on board commercial fishing boats, and subsequently delivered via distributers to restaurants and supermarkets to consumers. However, the quality of the tuna largely depends on the conditions at the time of fishing and the way it is handled throughout the distribution process.Conventional methods for inspection of the freshness and meat quality of frozen tuna usually require inspectors to cut off the tail of the fish to visually examine a cross section of the tuna tail. Cutting the tail of the tuna often damages and ultimately lowers the value of the fish, and the process relies heavily on a limited number of experts trained to accurately conduct quality inspection.Ultrasound waves are applied in quality testing in a variety of fields as a non-destructive testing method. However, the use for frozen products such as tuna proved to be difficult due to the high attenuation of acoustic waves.To address these issues, Tokai University under the lead of Professor Keiichi Goto, Department of Fisheries, School of Marine Science and Technology and Fujitsu conducted joint research examining frozen tuna with low-frequency ultrasound waves with low attenuation to inspect the freshness of the fish. By analyzing the waveforms using machine learning (3), the two parties successfully developed the world's first method to determine the freshness of frozen tuna without the need to cut the product.2. Period of the joint research:April 1, 2022 to March 31, 2023 (scheduled to continue after FY 2023)3. Outline of the research:In order to find the optimum ultrasound frequency to examine frozen tuna, Tokai University and Fujitsu conducted trials at several wave frequencies. Tests showed that ultrasound waves with a relatively low frequency of about 500 kHz delivered optimum results.To determine possible indicators of insufficient freshness (4), the two parties compared ultrasound waveforms from tuna specimens with good and insufficient freshness quality to examine whether waveforms differed depending on the freshness of the specimens. As a result, Tokai University and Fujitsu discovered that reflection intensity in the middle bone area of tuna specimen with insufficient freshness was especially intense. Based on these findings, the two parties created a machine learning model based on reflected waves from the middle bone of the tuna specimens (5) that is able to correctly inspect the freshness of frozen tuna with an accuracy of 70% to 80% (6). In addition to waveforms that can be easily differentiated by the human eye (image 2), the newly developed AI technology is also able to identify distinctions in waveforms that are difficult to visually perceive (image 3).4. Possible use scenarios of the new technology:- Wholesalers for marine products can easily inspect the freshness of a whole fish with a handheld device when buying tuna from fishermen- Applied to inspections at facilities including fishing ports using belt conveyors, the technology could be used for automated batch inspections of the freshness of frozen tuna5. Future plans:Moving forward, Tokai University and Fujitsu will conduct trials with additional tuna specimen to increase the accuracy of the newly developed technology and further enhance it to be able to detect other quality defects of frozen tuna including blood clots and tumors.The two partners further plan to conduct field trials at processing plants for marine products and conduct research to apply the technology to a wide range of areas, including the livestock industry, which handles frozen products, the biological field and the medical field.(1) Ultrasound AI technology :A group of AI technologies specialized in processing data acquired by ultrasonography. Technology that demonstrates high performance even for complex and fine patterns that are difficult for developers to create.(4) Insufficient freshness :A condition in which postmortem rigidity is progressing. In the case of frozen tuna, postmortem rigidity develops between the time it is caught and the time it is frozen, and tunas in the postmortem rigidity state have a lower product value than those frozen immediately after being caught.(5) Tokai University and Fujitsu cut out reflected waves from the middle bone part and performed machine learning from 222 ultrasound waveforms obtained from 10 tuna slices with good and insufficient quality. In addition to those samples, Tokai University and Fujitsu calculated a freshness score using 126 ultrasound waveforms obtained from a total of 6 tuna slices with good and insufficient quality and verified whether the waveforms from slices with good quality could be distinguished from those with insufficient quality. As a result, Tokai University and Fujitsu discovered a significant difference in the freshness score for specimens with good and insufficient quality.(6) Tokai University and Fujitsu evaluated the accuracy of the machine learning model using an AUC-ROC (Area Under the Curve of the Receiver Operating Characteristic) Curve. A ROC curve shows the true positive rate on the vertical axis and the false positive rate on the horizontal axis, whereas the area under the curve is obtained between 0.0 and 1.0, and 1.0 is a perfect score value. In general, a certain level of performance can be achieved when the value is higher than 0.7. For one of the Center's initial research projects, researchers from Fujitsu and Ben-Gurion University will apply an AI model (Out of Distribution detection model (1)) that can detect new, unknown types of threats, such as attacks on drones and fraud in network communications and develop technologies able to appropriately cope with the rapidly evolving attack methods. Singapore’s six universities added 1,000 places this year due to Covid-19 disruptions

SINGAPORE - Singapore's universities added 1,000 places this year for students whose plans to study overseas were disrupted by the Covid-19 pandemic. In May, Education Minister Chan Chun Sing announced that the six autonomous universities would have greater flexibility to admit more students "on an exceptional basis". This is similar to last year's measures, when 1,000 places were added for students whose plans were disrupted and for polytechnic diploma holders who were opting to study instead of work due to a weak job market. On Friday (Oct 29), the Ministry of Education (MOE) said the places were offered to support students while maintaining admissions standards to ensure a high quality of education. Overall, the six autonomous universities admitted about 17,800 Singaporean students this year. The autonomous universities comprise the National University of Singapore, Nanyang Technological University, the Singapore Management University, the Singapore University of Social Sciences, the Singapore University of Technology and Design and the Singapore Institute of Technology. MOE added that it will continue to monitor the global Covid-19 situation and its associated travel restrictions when it is accessing support measures for next year's batch of students. Last year, the extra places pushed the total enrolment number in Singapore's universities to 17,500 students. These students made up about 42 per cent of their cohort. It is a slightly higher rate than MOE's previously stated goal of a 40 per cent cohort participation rate in universities. But cohort participation rate may not be the most important factor in MOE's future planning around university place numbers. Former education minister Lawrence Wong said in an interview with The Straits Times in January that moving forward, the policy of planning for the numbers of university places based on cohort participation rates will become less relevant. He said: "We have been talking about SkillsFuture and lifelong learning and opening up different university pathways, including combining work and study. "So, there's no need to front-load four years of education before you go out to work. You can have a chance to get a university degree or further education any time, through your working life." Queenstown to be Singapore’s first health district with senior-friendly design, community programmes

SINGAPORE - Singapore's first and oldest satellite town Queenstown will be carved out as a health district in a pilot programme to support residents to lead healthier and more productive lives. This will be done through more integrated planning and design of the estate and more community-driven programmes, said National Development Minister Desmond Lee on Wednesday (Oct 20). The goal is to encourage "purposeful longevity" through opportunities for seniors to engage in paid work, volunteering activities and lifelong learning, said Mr Lee at the HDB Awards ceremony held at HDB Hub. One of the ways is to develop "affordable and usable technology that helps residents to take care of their health better and to age in place gracefully", he added. Mr Lee noted there is an increasing need to shift disease management away from acute hospitals to the community. "This means focusing on preventive and primary care, and take care of people before they fall so sick that they need to go to the hospital, so that healthcare becomes more about enhancing health, rather than just treating sickness," said Mr Lee, adding that the built environment has a key role to play in this. To improve residents' access to preventive health services, health screenings and talks will be brought closer to residential areas and conducted within the community, he said. Partners such as Lions Befrienders Service Association, the Agency for Integrated Care and Queenstown Grassroots Organisations will also help residents navigate the healthcare system. To encourage more residents to lead active lifestyles, greater emphasis will be placed on planning and designing the built environment. An example is a jogging loop at the carpark rooftop garden at Queen's Arc, a Build-To-Order (BTO) project in Queenstown launched in August. There are also urban farming spaces, along with a pedestrian mall with wellness-themed amenities and flexible spaces that can be used to hold community programmes. A wellness trail and heritage walk is also incorporated into the BTO project to make it convenient for residents to exercise. The BTO project drew significant interest from home seekers, with more than seven applicants vying for each of the 534 four-room units, despite a wait time of more than five years. The mature town, which was developed in the 1950s, currently has one of the oldest populations in Singapore, with almost one out of every four residents aged 65 and above. It is one of Singapore's most sought-after housing estates, with the third-highest number of million-dollar HDB resale flat transactions after the central area and Bishan. Future housing estates in Ulu Pandan will have a balance of greenery and water bodies to enhance local biodiversity. These will be connected to the Green Corridor and the wider park connector network to encourage more recreational activities, said HDB.
