TOKYO, Jun 15, 2022 - (JCN Newswire via SEAPRWire.com) - A novel phased-array beamformer for the 5G millimeter wave (mmWave) band has been recently developed by researchers at Tokyo Tech and NEC Corporation. Their innovative design applies two well-known techniques -- the Doherty amplifier and digital predistortion -- to a mmWave phased-array transceiver and overcomes the issues in conventional designs, producing exceptional energy and area efficiency and outperforming other state-of-the-art 5G transceivers.5G networks are becoming more prevalent worldwide. Many consumer devices that support 5G are already benefiting from increased speeds and lower latency. However, some frequency bands allocated for 5G are not effectively utilized owing to technological limitations. These frequency bands include the New Radio (NR) 39 GHz band, but actually span from 37 GHz to 43.5 GHz, depending on the country. The NR band offers notable advantages in performance over other lower frequency bands 5G networks use today. For instance, it enables ultra-low latency in communication along with data rates of over 10 Gb/s and a massive capacity to accommodate several users. However, these feats come at a cost. High-frequency signals are attenuated quickly as they travel through space. It is, therefore, crucial that the transmitted power is concentrated in a narrow beam aimed directly at the receiver. This can, in principle, be achieved using phased-array beamformers, transmission devices composed of an array of carefully phase-controlled antennas. However, working at high frequency regions of the NR band decreases the efficiency of power amplifiers as they tend to suffer from nonlinearity issues, which distort the transmitted signal. To address these issues, a team of researchers led by Professor Kenichi Okada from Tokyo Institute of Technology (Tokyo Tech), Japan, have recently developed, in a new study, a novel phased-array beamformer for 5G base stations. Their design adapts two well-known techniques, namely the Doherty amplifier and digital predistortion (DPD), into a mmWave phased-array transceiver, but with a few twists. The researchers present their findings in the 2022 IEEE Symposium on VLSI Technology and Circuits. The Doherty amplifier, developed in 1936, has seen a resurgence in modern telecommunication devices owing to its good power efficiency and suitability for signals with a high peak-to-average ratio (such as 5G signals). The team at Tokyo Tech modified the conventional Doherty amplifier design and produced a bi-directional amplifier. What this means is that the same circuit can both amplify a signal to be transmitted and a received signal with low noise. This fulfilled the crucial role of amplification for both transmission and reception. "Our proposed bidirectional implementation for the amplifier is very area-efficient. Additionally, thanks to its co-design with a wafer-level chip-scale packaging technology, it enables low insertion loss. This means that less power is lost as the signal traverses the amplifier," explains Professor Okada. Despite its several advantages, however, the Doherty amplifier can exacerbate nonlinearity problems that arise from mismatches in the elements of the phased-array antenna. The team addressed this problem in two ways. First, they employed the DPD technique, which involves distorting the signal before transmission to effectively cancel out the distortion introduced by the amplifier. Their implementation, unlike the conventional DPD approaches, used a shared look-up table (LUT) for all antennas, minimizing the complexity of the circuit. Second, they introduced inter-element mismatch compensation capabilities to the phased array, improving its overall linearity. "We compared the proposed device with other state-of-the-art 5G phased-array transceivers and found that, by compensating the inter-element mismatches in the shared-LUT DPD module, ours demonstrate a lower adjacent channel leakage and transmission error," remarks Professor Okada. "Hopefully, the device and techniques described in this study will let us all reap the benefits of 5G NR sooner!"AcknowledgementThis work was partially supported by the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications in Japan (JPJ000254).About Tokyo Institute of TechnologyTokyo Tech stands at the forefront of research and higher education as the leading university for science and technology in Japan. TOKYO, Oct 11, 2021 - (JCN Newswire via SEAPRWire.com) - Fujitsu Limited today announced that it has started joint clinical research with the University of Tokyo Hospital to verify the effectiveness of artificial intelligence technology to estimate abnormal heart movements based on electrocardiogram(1) data. The research is planned to commence at the University of Tokyo Hospital from October 25.Flow of the Clinical ResearchSince December 2019, Fujitsu has been making progress with research and development of proprietary AI technology(2) in collaboration with the University of Tokyo Hospital. This research draws on data from patients that have visited the University of Tokyo Hospital to date and includes approximately 630,000 pieces of electrocardiographic data and data from approximately 140,000 cardiac ultrasounds (echocardiography)(3). This initiative has now succeeded in detecting patients with abnormal heart movements with high accuracy. The AI will be used in clinical field research to estimate the presence or absence of abnormal heart movements based on the data of patients undergoing electrocardiographic procedures at the University of Tokyo Hospital. Patients identified by the AI as having abnormal heart movements will undergo echocardiography, and the effectiveness will be verified by comparing the results of doctors' diagnosis with the results predicted by the AI. Fujitsu will leverage this AI to detect heart disease at an early stage to prevent progression to serious illness in patients and strengthen its vision of "Healthy Living", promoting well-being for people throughout society. This initiative will be introduced at Fujitsu ActivateNow 2021, a global event to be held from October 12 in online format.BackgroundHeart disease is the second leading cause of death in Japan (4), and electrocardiography, which detects abnormalities in the heart muscle and irregular pulses based on the waveform of electrical pulses in the heart, is widely used as a diagnostic tool to detect heart disease at an early stage. It remains difficult, however, to detect abnormalities in the shape and movement of the heart using only electrocardiograms. In medical practice, in addition to electrocardiography, doctors use a stethoscope to detect abnormal heart sounds (murmurs, arrythmia, etc.) based on the patient's description of their symptoms, followed by echocardiography to detect abnormalities in heart shape and movement. However, because echocardiographic diagnostics can only be performed in a limited number of facilities with specialized doctors and laboratory technicians, it is difficult to offer this for all patients. This makes early detection difficult, and when problems are detected, the progression of the disease may already be advanced. In the treatment of heart disease, early detection and appropriate treatment are a vital issue in medical practice.Since December 2019, in collaboration with a research group headed by Dr. Katsuhito Fujiu, Project Associate Professor, and Dr. Issei Komuro, Professor in the Department of Cardiovascular Medicine at the University of Tokyo Hospital, Fujitsu has been engaged in research and development utilizing AI to detect heart disease from electrocardiogram data, leveraging Fujitsu's proprietary waveform analysis technology, TDA (topological data analysis) (5). Going forward, Fujitsu will work to verify the effectiveness of AI in actual medical practice to estimate the presence or absence of abnormalities in cardiac function from electrocardiogram data, and will start clinical research at the University of Tokyo Hospital.Clinical Research OverviewBased on the electrocardiogram data of patients examined at the University of Tokyo Hospital, Fujitsu and the University of Tokyo Hospital will verify the effectiveness of detection of abnormal heart movement by AI.1. DurationFrom October 25, 2021 (Monday) to March 31, 2022 (Thursday) (Planned)2. LocationDepartment of Cardiovascular Medicine, the University of Tokyo Hospital3. Clinical Research Activity: testing artificial intelligence to estimate abnormal heart movementsFujitsu will install a server equipped with AI to detect abnormalities in heart movement at the University of Tokyo Hospital and connect it to a server that stores electrocardiogram data, analyze the patient's electrocardiogram, and estimate the presence or absence of abnormal heart movements. Echocardiography is performed on patients the AI predicts to have abnormal heart movements, and doctors determine whether heart disease is present.4. Division of rolesFujitsu: Install and operate AI-powered servers The University of Tokyo Hospital: Input of the patient's electrocardiogram data into the AI, echocardiography if the AI suspects an abnormality, and testing the effectiveness of the AI based on the results.Future PlansBased on the results of this clinical research, Fujitsu will promote research and development of solutions that can detect abnormalities in heart motion at an early stage and contribute to the prevention of progression to serious heart disease in patients. Through its joint research with the University of Tokyo Hospital, Fujitsu will continue to actively promote research and development of AI to detect various heart diseases. Ultimately, by working to leverage the results of these efforts to contribute to the resolution of medical problems confronting society, Fujitsu will help deliver greater trust and well-being to society, and drive the development of technologies and services that promote its vision of "Healthy Living".(1) Electrocardiogram:A record of changes in the electrical potential of the heart.(2) Research and development on their unique AI:Conducted in accordance with the University of Tokyo Hospital Code of Ethics.(3) Echocardiography:An ultrasound scan of the chest that analyzes and images the reflected waves to check the heart's mechanical functions, including movement and shape.(4) The second leading cause of death in Japan:From the report of "Summary of Vital Statistics" (the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare).(5) TDA (Topological Data Analysis):A data analysis method that treats data as a set of points arranged in a space and extracts geometric information of the set.Fujitsu's Commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) adopted by the United Nations in 2015 represent a set of common goals to be achieved worldwide by 2030. Fujitsu's purpose -- "to make the world more sustainable by building trust in society through innovation"--is a promise to contribute to the vision of a better future empowered by the SDGs.About FujitsuFujitsu is the leading Japanese information and communication technology (ICT) company offering a full range of technology products, solutions and services. PARIS (AFP) - Sayonara Tokyo, bonjour Paris. Thousands of people partied in the shadow of the Eiffel Tower on Sunday (Aug 8) to watch the closing ceremony of the delayed 2020 Olympics and celebrate the French capital's status as host of the 2024 showpiece. The contrast was dramatic after a Tokyo Games played out in mostly empty stadia and under strict Covid-19 protocols. "On an emotional level, it made me think of the 2012 and 2016 Olympics when a whole stadium is with you and cheering you on, it's very heartwarming," said French judo star Teddy Riner, who competed in Japan. Athletes who had taken part in the Tokyo Games were cheered by the crowds as thoughts turned to 2024. "I missed most of the Olympics because I worked at night, so it's nice to see the best moments again," said 22-year-old Alix as highlights of the last two weeks were replayed on a giant TV screen. "It's heartwarming to see the public, we have just gone through an Olympics which was a little different," admitted gymnast Samir Ait Said who carried the French flag at the opening ceremony on July 23. "It boosts my soul ten times, I'm injured and I already want to go and train!" Swimmer Florent Manaudou, a silver medallist in the 50m freestyle, predicted that the 2024 Games will be an iconic moment for the country. "We feel that the fans are celebrating and that they are gradually preparing to experience the Games in three years here." Decathlon silver medallist Kevin Mayer said he was delighted to "see all these little kids with stars in their eyes". "It reminds me of myself when I was little." Head of the 2024 organising committee, Tony Estanguet said the Games are on schedule. "For the moment, all the indicators are green," he said. The only low point for Parisiens was the decision not to hoist a giant French flag at the Eiffel Tower due to high winds. "That would have been majestic," said Gaelle, a visiting student. TOKYO - Whipping out a pair of chopsticks, she mimics slurping ramen as she declares her love for Japanese food. Soft-spoken, she tries to converse in a different language as she toggles between English and her native Arabic. Just like any other 12-year-old, Hend Zaza is inquisitive, shy and eager to absorb knowledge like a sponge. She likes mathematics and Harry Potter, and has lofty ambitions of becoming a pharmacist or lawyer. But Zaza is no ordinary girl. Last year, she became the first Syrian table tennis player to qualify for the Olympics after beating 43-year-old Lebanese Mariana Sahakian 4-3 to win the West Asia qualifiers. She is her country's flag bearer, and when she takes on Austria's Liu Jia, who at 39 is old enough to be her mother, in the women's singles preliminary round at the Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium on Saturday (July 24), Zaza will become the youngest Olympian at these Games. She will also become the youngest Olympian since 11-year-old Spanish rower Carlos Front 12-year-old Hungarian swimmer Judit Kiss competed at Barcelona 1992. Zaza tells the Olympic Information Services: "My goal at the Tokyo Olympics is to perform well so all my hard work won't be in vain. I will try my hardest and God-willing, something good will be in store for me." Inspired by Obeida, one of her four older brothers, Zaza first picked up a table tennis bat when she was five. Her development in her war-torn country has been nothing short of remarkable. Athletes sometimes come under fire for their performances, but in Zaza's case, she can actually hear rebel artillery fire when she trains six days a week in Syria in a room with four run-down tables and a dilapidated concrete floor. There are only three-hour day sessions because of frequent power cuts, and balls and bats have to be sourced from overseas as they are not found in Syria. Instead of complaining about the conditions on social media, Zaza carries on with a maturity beyond her years and has become a national champion and heroine. She says: "Our condition was very difficult but despite all that, we were able to get results. "For sure, I will not stop playing. Ping-pong is my whole life, the day I don't train, I feel I'm missing something and the day is not good. Once we go and play, we forget (the challenging conditions)." She also received an invite from the Chinese Olympic Committee to train with its national team last year. With no superior opponents in her country to push her, Zaza is keen to "go for training camps and play professionally in a club" or earn an Olympic scholarship after Tokyo 2020 to become a better player, but the patriotism in her voice is hard to miss despite her country's woes. She says: "Leaving Syria (for good), definitely no. I want to play for my country's name... for sure I have the honour to represent my country in international tournaments and championships." Shorter than 1.5 metres, Zaza is also not afraid to dream big, as she boldly proclaims: "I'm working towards the future to be the world champion and an Olympic champion." TOKYO - Journalists on a bus bound for the Olympic Village on Thursday (July 22) were met with a strange - but adorable - sight as their vehicle made a pit stop on the journey. Two boys, each no older than five, grinning from ear to ear and with cheeks turned rosy red by the Japanese summer, had peered under a metal barricade to grab a glimpse - and a photo - of the bus, which had the words "Tokyo 2020" plastered on its side. TOKYO (REUTERS) - Tokyo 2020 sponsor Toyota will not run Olympics-related TV commercials in Japan amid lacklustre public support for the Olympics, with two-thirds of Japanese doubting organisers can keep the Games safe during the Covid-19 pandemic, according to a local media poll. Toyota Motor Corp Chief Executive Akio Toyoda and other executives will not attend the opening ceremony either, Toyota said on Monday (July 19). "It is true that Toyota will not be attending the opening ceremony, and the decision was made considering various factors including no spectators," a spokesperson said. "We will not be airing any commercials related to the Games in Japan," she added. Toyota has already begun airing its Olympic ads on Comcast Corp-owned broadcaster NBC in the United States and will continue to do so during the Olympic and Paralympic Games, according to a statement from Toyota Motor North America. Some 60 Japanese corporations that have paid more than US$3 billion (S$4.09 billion) for sponsorship rights to the postponed 2020 Olympics now face a dilemma over whether to tie their brands to an event that has so far failed to win strong public backing. With just four days before the opening ceremony in Tokyo, 68 per cent of respondents in an Asahi newspaper poll expressed doubt about the ability of Olympic organisers to control coronavirus infections, with 55 per cent saying they were opposed to the Games going ahead. Three-quarters of the 1,444 people in the telephone survey said they agreed with a decision to ban spectators from events. As Covid-19 cases rise in Tokyo, now under its fourth state of emergency, public concern has grown that hosting an event with tens of thousands of overseas athletes, officials and journalists could accelerate infection rates in Japan's capital and introduce variants that are more infectious or deadlier. International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach has said he hopes the Japanese public will warm to the Games once competition begins and as Japanese athletes begin winning medals. The Tokyo Olympics run July 23 through Aug. 8. "We will continue to cooperate and work closely with organisers such as Tokyo Metropolitan Government, Tokyo 2020, and the IOC to ensure we have a safe and secure environment for the Games," government spokesperson, Chief Cabinet Secretary Katsunobu Kato said at a regular briefing. Covid-19 cases Games officials on Sunday reported the first Covid-19 case among competitors in the athletes' village in Tokyo where 11,000 athletes are expected to stay during the Games. Since July 2, Tokyo 2020 organisers have reported 58 positive cases among athletes, officials and journalists. Any major outbreak in the village could wreak havoc on competitions because those either infected or isolating would not be able to compete. Olympic officials and individual event organisers have contingency plans to deal with infections among athletes. A Tokyo 2020 spokesperson said the village was a safe place to stay, adding that the infection rate among athletes and other Games-related people visiting Japan was nearly 0.1 per cent. "Many athletes may have parties or ceremonies before they go to Tokyo where there may be cheering or greeting. So they may also have a risk to get infected in their own countries," said Koji Wada, a professor at Tokyo's International University of Health and Welfare and an adviser on the government's coronavirus response. The latest surge in cases in Tokyo comes after four earlier waves, the deadliest of which was in January. New Covid-19 cases in Tokyo reached 1,410 on Saturday, the most since the start of the year, with new infections exceeding 1,000 for five straight days. Most of those new cases are among younger people, as Japan has succeeded in getting most of its vulnerable elderly population vaccinated with at least one shot, although only 32 per cent of the overall population has so far received one. Other headaches Japanese musician Keigo Oyamada, who described in magazines decades ago how he had bullied his classmates, said on Twitter that he was stepping down as a composer for the Olympics' opening ceremony, in the latest blow to the Games. Olympics organisers on Monday had rebuffed calls for him to be dismissed. Other officials have stepped down in the run-up to the Games for inappropriate comments, including the former head of Tokyo 2020, Yoshiro Mori, in February and the creative director for the opening and closing ceremonies, Hiroshi Sasaki, in March. In the political arena, South Korean President Moon Jae-in said he would not visit Japan for the Games or a first in-person summit with Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga after media reports cited a senior Japanese diplomat making offensive remarks about him. Monday also brought a warning from the Tokyo 2020 organiser following local media reports of Games-related visitors drinking in downtown Tokyo. In an email, it warned Olympic participants who had completed their 14 days of isolation to comply with Tokyo's emergency declaration rules by staying out of bars serving alcohol or restaurants "illegally" staying open after 8 p.m. More on this topic Related Story Olympics: As unpredictable Games loom, Japan's sponsors struggle to adapt Related Story Japan Inc joins Covid-19 vaccination push as Olympics loom "These incidents have also been raised in the National Diet, and have the potential to severely damage the reputation of the Tokyo 2020 Games and your organisations," it said. For Tokyo residents already living with those lockdown restrictions, travel on their city's roads became more difficult on Monday as the city readied for the start of the Olympics with new traffic restrictions, including reserved lanes for Olympic officials, athletes and journalists. Transport authorities also hiked toll charges by 1,000 yen (S$12.46) for private vehicles using the network of elevated expressways that snake through the city in a bid to reduce traffic during the Games.
