CropLife Asia Echoes FAO Call to Transform our Food Systems

SINGAPORE, Jul 13, 2021 - (ACN Newswire via SEAPRWire.com) - With the release of the United Nations (UN) 2021 State of Food Security & Nutrition in the World (SOFI) report, CropLife Asia highlighted the need for the region's food value chain stakeholders to work together in transforming our food systems to better enable food security, improved nutrition, and affordable healthy diets for all.The challenge of achieving the UN's Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 2 of 'zero hunger' globally by 2030 has grown even more complicated with the broad impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. In this latest UN report, it is estimated that the number of people affected by hunger worldwide in 2020 was between 720 and 811 million people. This is a marked increase of over 100 million more people than in 2019. The prevalence of undernourishment (PoU) has also climbed up to around 9.9 percent in 2020 compared to 8.4 percent the previous year. This new report also confirms a sadly familiar refrain for Asia: our region is failing to deliver food security for far too many - particularly among the more vulnerable parts of society. Asia continues to be home to the greatest number of undernourished people with 418 million suffering from hunger in 2020."The challenge of feeding Asia and the world requires us to explore all possible solutions. This can only be achieved through greater collaboration with others, as multi-stakeholder approaches are crucial for transformation of our food systems," said Dr Siang Hee Tan, Executive Director, CropLife Asia. "The plant science industry champions innovation in both crop protection and plant biotech, as well as precision and digital agriculture solutions to benefit both people and the planet.""The innovative technologies of the plant science industry have a key role to play, but it is only one part of the solution," Dr Tan added. "Ensuring that an ample supply of affordable and nutritious food reaches those who need it most is a shared responsibility. Farmers' access to innovation is an increasingly crucial component to combatting food insecurity in Asia and around the world."Global crop losses due to pests and disease are a major contributor to global food loss and waste. These losses would be twice as high without the use of crop protection products. Crop losses can be further reduced through more effective crop protection stewardship practices. Without innovations such as crop protection products and plant biotechnology, global pre-harvest crop losses could double. Meanwhile, biotech crops are developed with improved traits such as increased yield, better resistance to pests and/or improved nutrition, among others. These traits are crucial tools that enable farmers to produce more food using fewer resources to feed our growing world. About CropLife AsiaCropLife Asia is a non-profit society and the regional organization of CropLife International, the voice of the global plant science industry. We advocate a safe, secure food supply, and our vision is food security enabled by innovative agriculture. Nine contracts worth $320m awarded for Singapore-Johor RTS Link systems

SINGAPORE - Nine contracts worth about RM1 billion (S$321.7 million) have been awarded for system works for the Johor Baru-Singapore Rapid Transit System (RTS) Link, said the rail link's operator - RTS Operations (RTSO). In an update on Wednesday (May 12), the operator, a joint venture between Singapore rail operator SMRT and Malaysia's public transport firm Prasarana, said these system works are "progressing well". It did not specify when these contracts were awarded. Four of the contracts were for core systems, with Chinese firm CRRC Zhuzhou Locomotive taking charge of the rail link's rolling stock and the Malaysian subsidiary of Siemens Mobility handling the signalling system and platform screen doors. Another Malaysian firm, Sapura Rail Systems, was awarded contracts to set up the communications system and the integrated supervisory control system. The remaining five contracts are for track work, power supply systems, depot equipment and service vehicles, as well as an automatic fare collection system. The firm said it had earlier awarded a systems consultancy contract for the design, manufacturing, delivery, testing and commissioning of all systems for the RTS Link, which will connect Woodlands North with Bukit Chagar in Johor Baru. RTSO chief executive, Mr Shamsul Rizal Md Yusof, said: "We are pleased with the outcome of the tender exercise. There is a good mix of local and international players working together to make the RTS Link a success." RTSO chairman, Datuk Mohd Farid Mohd Adnan, said the firm is fully committed to delivering the RTS project despite the challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic. Vice-chairman Yap Kim Wah said the good progress made on the project is a testament to the close collaboration among all parties. RTSO was formed last year and will own, design, build, finance and manage all RTS Link operating assets, including trains, tracks and systems. The Singapore-incorporated company will also operate and maintain the 4km rail line and the associated Wadi Hana depot in Johor Baru. The latest update comes several months after Singapore broke ground on the Woodlands North terminus station in January, and the Land Transport Authority awarded a $180 million contract to build a 25m-tall viaduct and rail tunnels for the RTS Link. Construction on the viaduct, which will span the Johor Strait, and the tunnels were expected to begin this quarter. Construction on the Bukit Chagar terminus station had begun last November. When completed in end-2026, the RTS Link is expected go some way towards easing congestion on the Causeway. Before Covid-19 restrictions were imposed, close to 300,000 people crossed the Causeway daily. The rail link is expected to carry up to 10,000 passengers every hour in each direction, and the trip between both terminus stations should take only five minutes. DENSO Collaborates with Aeva to Bring New LiDAR to Market

KARIYA, JAPAN, Jan 20, 2021 - (JCN Newswire) - DENSO, a leading mobility supplier, has announced a partnership with U.S. LiDAR and perception systems company, Aeva, to develop next-generation sensing and perception systems. Together, the companies will advance Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave (FMCW) LiDAR, a groundbreaking solution that measures velocity, in addition to depth and reflectivity, and bring it to the mass vehicle market. LiDAR plays a key role in automated driving and advanced driver-assistance systems. At present, most LiDAR systems use the Time of Flight (TOF) method to operate. This method accurately detects the distance and direction of objects by emitting pulse laser beams and measuring the time taken to receive the beams reflected by the objects. It can detect the positions of objects around a vehicle with high resolution, and is expected to provide high-performance detection.Founded in 2017 by former Apple engineers Soroush Salehian and Mina Rezk, Aeva is developing LiDAR with a new measurement method called FMCW. Unlike the TOF LiDAR, FMCW LiDAR detects not only the distance and direction of objects but also measures the moving speed of objects by emitting laser beams while measureing the changes in frequency of the beams reflected by objects. These capabilities allow FMCW LiDAR to detect moving objects close to a vehicle, such as pedestrians and bicycles, with higher accuracy and speed. As the collaboration progresses, DENSO's deep knowledge of sensing technology and commercialization paired with Aeva's proprietary technology will allow each to further strengthen FMCW LiDAR and innovate perception systems for the future. The partnership also supports DENSO's goal to eliminate traffic accidents and realize freedom of mobility for all. To do this, the company is focusing on developing technologies that improve road safety, like advanced driver-assistance and automated driving systems; working with public and private partners to promote traffic accident prevention; and innovating solutions that help detect driver health and measure driving skills. Modification to the scroll shape, from a step to a slope, has significantly reduced leakage loss, and provided a considerable gain in efficiency at low loads. In addition, the use of a large fan, long bell mouth, and small-diameter hairpin air heat exchanger provide 20% greater power efficiency compared to previous models. Further, this series offers approximately 55% energy reduction compared to absorption-type heating/cooling units. The MSV2 series uses R32 refrigerant, which has around one-third the global warming potential (GWP)(3) of conventional R410A refrigerant. Along with a 28% reduction in refrigerant charge volume compared to previous models, and a 77% lower CO2 conversion factor, these units contribute to a lessening of the environmental load. The ECCJ Energy Conservation Grand Prize Awards recognize outstanding energy-saving initiatives at businesses or workplaces that serve as examples for other companies, or outstanding energy-saving products and business models. The awards program was created to contribute to the realization of an energy-saving society by raising energy conservation awareness throughout Japan, and promoting the adoption of energy-saving products.MHI Thermal Systems, encouraged by this award, will continue to develop technologies and products that provide further reductions in CO2 and energy savings. Further, by drawing on the collective technological capabilities realized through synergies generated from its broad business domain, including the thermal engineering business to enhance energy efficiency in a wide range of production plants, the large-scale refrigerator business for cooling large spaces, the air conditioning business to create a wide range of comfortable spaces, the transport refrigerating systems business essential to cold chains, and the automotive air-conditioning business, MHI Thermal Systems will focus on achieving optimal thermal solutions to meet the varied needs of customers.(1) "Heat pump chiller" is a general term for a unit that creates and supplies hot and cold water for building air conditioning systems, or various types of industrial facilities. They are called "chillers" because they are used mainly in cooling applications, but the term "heat pump" is added because they can also be used to heat water to high temperatures. The internal system comprises refrigerant and water circulation systems, with heat exchanged as the refrigerant and water pass through a water heat exchanger.(2) Coefficient of Performance (COP) is an indicator of the degree of efficiency that can be realized from using one kilowatt of electricity. Larger values indicate greater energy efficiency. For refrigeration systems, COP is the rated refrigeration capacity (kW) divided by electricity consumption (kW).(3) Global Warming Potential (GWP) is a coefficient expressing a relative value, with CO2 fixed at a GWP of 1.0. Smaller values indicate greater environmental performance. Copyright 2021 JCN Newswire. All rights reserved. www.jcnnewswire.com
