TOKYO, Mar 11, 2022 - (JCN Newswire via SEAPRWire.com) - Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Air-Conditioning and Refrigeration Corporation (MHI-AC&R), a Group company of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI), has newly developed a large-capacity brine refrigeration system adopting a nitrogen (N2) refrigerant having both zero ozone depletion potential (ODP)(1) and zero global warming potential (GWP)(2). The new system can accommodate even cryotemperature needs, placing it at the pinnacle of industry offerings(3). The Company has just delivered a unit of the new system to The Honjo Chemical Corporation (Neyagawa, Osaka), a manufacturer of organic chemicals and other products, and further sales in the domestic market will be pursued going forward.Large-capacity air-refrigerant (N2) brine refrigeration system flowchartThe new system can refrigerate at ultra-low and cryo-temperatures (brine temperature: -45℃ to -100℃) through application of MHI-AC&R's proprietary (patented) air refrigeration cycle technology. The unit also features one of the industry's most compact sizes, enabling easy handling and transport. Its compression expansion machine incorporates MHI Group's accumulated high technologies in gas turbines. In addition to capturing the energy generated during air expansion cooling and using it as drive power, stable operation is achieved through the integration of high technologies such as energy-saving inverter control. The new refrigeration system contributes significantly to curbing global warming through the adoption of N2, a natural refrigerant having zero environmental impact. In recent years, initiatives to prevent climate change have accelerated in momentum. In Japan, since April 2015, when the Act on Rational Use and Appropriate Management of Fluorocarbons(4) went into effect, the low-temperature refrigeration machine market has been called on to adopt low-GWP refrigerants. Internationally, in tandem with implementation of the Kigali Amendment to the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer in January 2019, along with revisions to the Vienna Convention for the Protection of the Ozone Layer, production of chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) substitutes and phased reduction in energy consumption have become mandatory.Today, because there are few refrigerant options in the ultra-low-temperature refrigeration field, many refrigeration systems continue to use CFC refrigerants. However, demand for CFC-free refrigeration systems is steadily rising in order to mitigate impact on the environment. The refrigerant used in MHI-AC&R's new refrigeration system uses nitrogen, which accounts for approximately 78% of air content, so it is safe both to the environment and to humans. Use of a CFC-free refrigerant also eliminates the inspection procedures mandated under the Act on Rational Use and Appropriate Management of Fluorocarbons, and the new refrigerant is also exempt from the High Pressure Gas Safety Act which regulates the production of high-pressure gases and their consumption, etc. Another benefit is the adoption of magnetic bearings in the system's compression expansion machine, which eliminates the need for lubricating oil and enables a virtually unlimited service life, thereby helping to ease the user's maintenance and operating burdens.(1) ODP is a coefficient expressing a refrigerant's ozone depletion potential compared to the previously widely used CFC-11 (trichlorofluoromethane), which is assigned a value of 1.0. The lower the ODP value, the smaller is the deleterious impact on the ozone layer.(2) GWP is a coefficient expressing a refrigerant's global warming potential compared to CO2, which is assigned a value of 1.0. The lower the GWP, the higher is the refrigerant's environmental performance.(3) Based on MHI-AC&R's in-house survey.(4) The Act on Rational Use and Proper Management of Fluorocarbons is a totally revised update, carried out in April 2015, to the original Fluorocarbons Recovery and Destruction Law enacted in 2001. Under the revised legislation, commercial refrigeration condensing units and stationary refrigeration units with a refrigeration capacity exceeding 1.5 kilowatt (kW) (approx. 2HP) are required by 2025 to adopt refrigerants with a GWP below 1500 (CO2 =1).Delivery OverviewClient and destination: The Honjo Chemical Corporation, Naoshima Organic Chemical Plant(Naoshima-cho, Kagawa-gun, Kagawa Pref.)Intended usage: Removal of heat of reaction produced during production of organic chemicalsSpecification: Brine temperature -80degC (down to -100degC)About MHI GroupMitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) Group is one of the world's leading industrial groups, spanning energy, logistics & infrastructure, industrial machinery, aerospace and defense. OverviewTo address global warming, today countries everywhere are vigorously called on to promote large-scale CCS and CCUS projects within constrained budgets. In response to that call, MHIENG developed technology enabling chemical absorption of the CO2 content of flue gas emissions. The original technology consisted of "KS-1" - a solvent whose high reliability has been confirmed by a track record of deliveries to 13 commercial plants worldwide - and the "KM CDR Process" for carbon capture. The award-winning, cost-saving "Advanced KM CDR Process" supersedes that earlier configuration and incorporates "KS-21" solvent.2. Major characteristics (compared to KS-1 and generally used amine-based solvent MEA)a. KS-21 solvent offers lower volatility and higher stability against degradation. Its contributions in terms of reducing absorption reaction heat and capture energy translate to potential economic benefits with respect to lower operating costs for the customer, etc.b. A low level of amine emissions results in reduced solvent consumption and lighter impact on the environment. (Environmental impact assessment by a third-party institution has yielded highly reliable emissions measurements.)c. The new system can accommodate carbon capture from a variety of flue gas sources. It supports customers in industrial and infrastructure areas including not only conventional power generation and chemical plants, but also biomass and LNG liquefaction plants, steel and cement factories, waste incineration facilities, etc., from project formulation stages including basic design, pilot demonstration, licensing, etc.3. TOKYO, Dec 23, 2021 - (JCN Newswire via SEAPRWire.com) - Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Thermal Systems, Ltd. (MHI Thermal Systems), a part of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) Group, has won the Energy Conservation Center, Japan Chairman's Award in "Best Practice Category" at the 2021 Energy Conservation Grand Prize sponsored by the Energy Conservation Center, Japan (ECCJ), with support from Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI). This award was presented for measures relating to energy savings from a factory heating and cooling system utilizing an aquifer(1) thermal energy storage (ATES) system. The use of underground water stored in aquifers as a source of heat for heating and cooling systems is highly regarded for its energy conservation potential, environmental performance, and other benefits. This is the first time MHI Thermal Systems has received an award in Best Practices Category. The initiative recognized with this reward is the introduction of an ATES system that takes advantage of the unutilized energy of 700kw in geothermal heat for the heating and cooling system at the MHI Thermal Systems Kobe Works, located on the grounds of the MHI Kobe Shipyard & Machinery Works in Hyogo Prefecture. This system provides efficient use of energy by allowing for the cyclical use of heat across seasons, utilizing the cold exhaust from heating during the wintertime for air conditioning during the summer, and warm exhaust from air conditioning during the summertime for heating during the winter. In addition, the reduction in heat emissions into the atmosphere, an underground heat balance of zero for the full year period, and other benefits, contribute to cutting CO2 emissions, alleviating the heat island effect, and preventing global warming.Additional energy‐saving measures adopted for the ATES system include the use of a high-performance inverter centrifugal heat pump(2) with low-GWP(3) refrigerant, adoption of an optimal control system, introduction of visualization systems to assess energy usage and heat source well performance, and utilization of initial year operating data for long-term operation from the second year and beyond. As a result, compared to a gas absorption cold/hot water heater with similar capacity, this system provides a reduction in annual primary energy consumption equivalent to 46.5kL in crude oil per annum (reduction rate of 49.9%), and CO2 reductions of 109.1 tonnes per annum (reduction rate of 65.3%).The ECCJ Energy Conservation Grand Prize were established in 2011 to raise awareness of energy conservation, promote related activities and initiatives, and contribute to the widespread adoption of energy-efficient products and practices. The annual awards program recognizes outstanding energy-saving initiatives at businesses or workplaces that serve as examples for other companies, or outstanding energy-saving products and business models.MHI Thermal Systems, encouraged by this award, will continue to develop technologies and products that further contribute to energy conservation. In addition, by drawing on the collective technological capabilities realized through synergies generated from its wide-ranging business domain, including the thermal engineering business to enhance energy efficiency in many types of production plants, the large-scale refrigerator business for cooling large spaces, and the air conditioning business to create a wide range of comfortable spaces, as well as the transport refrigerating systems business essential to cold chains, and the automotive air-conditioning business, MHI Thermal Systems will focus on achieving optimal thermal solutions to meet the varied needs of customers.(1) An aquifer is an underground layer composed of gravel or other materials. Because the groundwater stored in this layer is cooler than the ambient temperature in summer and warmer in winter, it is considered unutilized temperature difference energy with high utility value as a heat source.(2) The use of warm water specifications based on the ETI-Z Series of centrifugal chillers for air conditioners manufactured by MHI Thermal Systems allows for switching between heating and cooling modes. See the following press release for more information on the ETI-Z Series.https://www.mhi.com/news/1506101900.html(3) Global Warming Potential (GWP) is a coefficient, with CO2 fixed at a GWP of 1.0. TOKYO, Oct 8, 2021 - (JCN Newswire via SEAPRWire.com) - Fujitsu has announced that from October 7 it will begin to provide free assessments to its customers considering the use of its FUJITSU Hybrid IT Service FJcloud, etc. in their digital transformation projects, demonstrating changes to CO2 emissions resulting from the migration of IT systems to the cloud.Fujitsu will offer a visualization of the CO2 emissions and power consumption of current IT systems against the use of FJcloud, for example, for its customers with on-premises IT systems, which have issues of balancing business growth and the ability to contribute to sustainability. This will empower customers to make the choice of their next IT platform with greater insight into both the overall cost as well as ability to contribute to decarbonization.Through this initiative, Fujitsu ultimately aims to contribute to the optimization of its customers' IT systems by guiding them to utilize the cloud, as well as to the realization of a sustainable society through reducing the carbon footprint of business.IT-related power consumption in Japan projected to increase exponentially by 2030In recent years, efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and promote the use of renewable energy sources have intensified as stakeholders throughout society work to achieve the ambitious global targets set out in the Paris Agreement and the SDGs--companies around the world must also play a more aggressive role in tackling the existential threat posed by climate change. According to the Green Growth Strategy (1) outlined by Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry as a part of its efforts to realize carbon neutrality, IT-related power consumption, including from servers and network equipment, accounted for approximately 4% of Japan's total power consumption in 2016. Estimates indicate that this figure will balloon to more than 36 times by 2030, presenting an urgent challenge to companies to reduce the power consumption of their IT systems to contribute to the realization of a carbon-free society.Fujitsu has been actively working to reduce its power consumption and continuously improving the energy efficiency of its operations, including through the use of novel techniques for cooling systems using outside air cooling and optimizing cooling efficiency by controlling air conditioning equipment using AI in its FJcloud data centers in Japan. Fujitsu has pledged that by FY 2022 it will achieve decarbonization of its FJcloud, sourcing 100% of the electricity required for of its operations from renewable energy. In addition to these efforts, Fujitsu will also strive to accelerate the decarbonization of its customers' IT systems, developing assessment tools to visualize the CO2 emissions and power consumption of our customers' IT systems, and will start providing assessments to customers free of charge on October 7, 2021.The assessment identifies the amount of power that the customer is using through interviews with stakeholders or direct measurements of IT systems in actual use and calculates the current amount of CO2 emissions and power consumption by inputting data into a dedicated assessment tool that sets PUE (2) values, etc. Then Fujitsu visualizes and presents comparison results to the customer demonstrating potential improvements to PUE through the use of FJcloud, etc. and proposes a cloud migration strategy best suited to the customer. This allows customers to take both total cost of IT systems as well as offers a clear path to decarbonization. The highly energy efficient FUJITSU Hybrid IT Service offers customers the ability to reduce CO2 emissions by more than 30% compared to their existing systems.Going forward, Fujitsu will continue to strengthen its capabilities and capacity to support the optimization and decarbonization of IT systems for more customers, as well as its contributions to the achievement of the SDGs, playing an active role in addressing climate change and realizing a sustainable society.(1) Green Growth Strategy through Achieving Carbon Neutrality in 2050:Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) strategy for achieving carbon neutrality by 2050, initially announced in December 2020 and subsequently updated. https://www.meti.go.jp/english/press/2021/0618_002.html(2) PUE:Power Usage Effectiveness. A measure of the power efficiency of a data center. The power consumption of the entire data center divided by the power consumption of ICT equipment such as servers. The closer to 1.0, the more efficient it is.Fujitsu's Commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) adopted by the United Nations in 2015 represent a set of common goals to be achieved worldwide by 2030. Fujitsu's purpose -- "to make the world more sustainable by building trust in society through innovation"--is a promise to contribute to the vision of a better future empowered by the SDGs.About FujitsuFujitsu is the leading Japanese information and communication technology (ICT) company offering a full range of technology products, solutions and services.
