PARIS (AFP) - Former Fifa president Sepp Blatter has been interviewed by French anti-corruption police investigating the controversial vote to award the 2022 World Cup to Qatar. Blatter, 85, was summoned to appear as a "witness" on Thursday and Friday, French police said, confirming a report in Le Monde newspaper. The inquiry is being led by France's OCLCIFF anti-corruption unit. Part of its focus surrounds a Nov 23, 2019, dinner hosted by then French President Nicolas Sarkozy, two high ranking Qatari officials, and Michel Platini, then head of Uefa. Platini is suspected of having voted for Qatar at the request of Sarkozy. Investigators are also looking at a US$300 million (S$411.5 million) contract with a US$100 million bonus for Fifa giving the television rights for the 2018 World Cup in Russia and the 2022 one in Qatar to Qatari television station Al-Jazeera, if Qatar was awarded the tournament. Blatter's hearing was held at the Swiss Public Prosecutor's office in Zurich and was part of the legal process into the Qatar vote opened by France's National Financial Prosecutor's Office (PNF). Blatter was Fifa president between 1998 and 2015 when he was forced to stand down and banned from football for eight years, reduced later to six, over ethics breaches. Qatar was the surprise choice in the December 2010 Fifa vote for next year's World Cup. DOHA (AFP) - Qatar's prime minister announced Doha is seeking to provide one million doses of a coronavirus vaccine to fans attending the 2022 World Cup in the country, state media reported Sunday (June 20). The Gulf nation has been slowly opening up as it continues with its mass vaccination programme. There is "the possibility that some countries will not be able to vaccinate all their citizens," said Sheikh Khalid bin Khalifa bin Abdulaziz Al-Thani, according to the official Qatar News Agency. "Qatar will not allow fans to enter stadiums without being fully vaccinated against the virus," he said. "That is why we are currently in negotiations with one of the companies to provide one million" doses of vaccine, he added, without naming any firm. "Our main goal in vaccinating some of those coming to Qatar to attend the World Cup is to protect the public health of citizens and residents." Sheikh Khalid also said that approximately 72 per cent of Qatar's 2.75 million population "will have received at least one dose" of vaccine within the next week. Qatar's foreign minister, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani, said in April that Doha was in talks with coronavirus vaccine makers to ensure all fans attending the World Cup are inoculated. Qatar has so far recorded 220,800 coronavirus cases, including 583 deaths. QATAR, UAE, Jun 14, 2021 - (ACN Newswire via SEAPRWire.com) - Taking place on 7 July 2021, the 11th Global Edition of #TresconCyberSec will focus on the Qatar region discussing topics such as, creating cyber security frameworks for critical assets and critical infrastructure; legal frameworks and regulations in cyber security; the boom of emerging technologies: new threats & new security techniques; cloud security, data protection and much more. The Impact of Covid-19 on Qatar's Cyber Security:Qatar recorded 2,033 emails, URL and file threats related to the Corona virus (Covid-19) in Q1 2020, the second-highest in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC); a very concerning fact for the nation that has pushed officials into further investing in better security systems to protect their businesses. In particular, rise in recent ransomwares attacks has seen both high numbers and impact during the pandemic, as work from home initiatives risk loss of sensitive information. Why Qatar and Why Now?With the growing concern regarding security, government organizations and enterprises in Qatar have been moving forward with plans to better their security protocols in what seems to be the country's bid to fight back against the cyber threat. But this will take time and Qataris know what it takes - a long term strategy and a strong foundational commitment from everyone involved. In fact, industry experts are recommending a more multi-layered approach to protect all fronts and prevent users from accessing malicious domains that could deliver malware."Privacy must be prioritised in this digital age. We are now seeing that basically everyone recognises security as a business concern. Cyber-criminals are always discovering new techniques to compromise organisations, and if we don't keep ahead of the game, we might end up with a massive problem." stated Mithun Shetty, CEO, Trescon. He further added, "World Cyber Security Summit will address these cyber security challenges faced by enterprises in Qatar as we have hand-picked thought leaders and experts from a broad range of industries. The event will also host technology providers specialised in cyber security to help organisations identify threat areas and suitable solutions to tackle them,"World Cyber Security Summit - Qatar will feature a ground-breaking collaboration of experts such as Dr Ahmed Al-sulaiti, CEO, Qatar National Broadband Network; Alex Chung, Senior Manager - Cybersecurity, Milaha; Prof Dr Roberto Di Pietro, Professor of Cyber security, HBKU College of Science and Engineering; Dr R Seetharaman, Chief Executive Officer, Doha Bank; Dr Meryem Duygun, Chair in Risk and Insurance, Aviva; Syed Shahid Ahmad, Head of Transaction Banking & Innovation, Dukhan Bank; Shaju Bhaskaran, CISO, Ahli Bank; and Dr Erdal Ozkaya, Regional CISO & MD, Standard Chartered Bank to name a few. DOHA (AFP) - Spain's former champion Roberto Bautista Agut, the fifth seed, and Georgia's unseeded Nikoloz Basilashvili qualified on Friday (March 12) for the Qatar Open final, overcoming humid and windy conditions. Bautista Agut eased past Russia's Andrey Rublev, ranked eighth in the world and the defending champion, with a dominating performance, 6-3, 6-3. Fresh from a famous victory against Roger Federer, back after 13 months of injury absence, in the quarter-finals, Basilashvili edged American Taylor Fritz 7-6 (7/3), 6-1. The 29-year-old will attempt to secure his fourth title on Saturday after saving a match point against Federer. Bautista Agut, the 2019 Qatar champion, had already ousted Dominic Thiem, the number one seed, in the quarters and powered on through the semis. Rublev had an unusually easy path to the semis, a first round bye which was followed by injury-enforced walkovers handed to him by Richard Gasquet and Marton Fucsovics. Bautista Agut had a difficult start to this season with four wins to five losses coming into Doha. But it pales in comparison to the slump endured by his Georgian opponent for Saturday who arrived at the Qatar Open with a 2-13 record since the resumption of the sport in August. "Yesterday's match already give me a lot of confidence," Basilashvili said of his victory over 20-time Grand Slam title winner Federer. "Today I was much more relaxed than I was (in) I don't know... eight tournaments." He described Bautista Agut as a "very good baseline player". "He doesn't have many errors, so it's going to be tough match for me," he said. Bautista, who celebrated his 14th top-10 win after ousting Rublev, described the Qatar Open and the Khalifa International Tennis Complex as "one of my favourites". "I played one of my best matches here in Qatar two years ago, and I hope I can win one more match tomorrow," he said after his win. "It was very difficult to play tennis today, with the windy conditions... but I put a lot of pressure on his second serve and played really good tennis. "I played a long match yesterday, but I felt fresh and I had a lot of power on the court."
DOHA (AFP) - America's Madison Keys made a triumphant return to play against sixth seed Belinda Bencic, clinching three games in a row as she opened her campaign, winning her first match since September 6-4, 6-1. But Swiss Bencic, making her third appearance at the Qatar Open where she made the quarter-finals last year, began her fightback in the fourth game. The fatigue of playing into the final at the Adelaide International last week and the punishing flight to Qatar surely contributed to Bencic's visible fatigue. Keys was more proficient in the big moments, meaning Bencic struggled in vain to steal a break, allowing the American to mop up five of the first seven games. But Bencic bounced back when she was two games behind Keys, securing the ninth game and an ace in the 39th minute which could have helped her go level. Keys overcame her resistance to steal the first set and her backhand side allowed her to maintain the pressure on Bencic in the second. Keys closed out the final games with stellar serving, a superb forehand and a memorable backhand to take the penultimate game. Her form was reminiscent of that which got her to the US Open final in 2017. "It's amazing to be back - I'm smiling under my mask," said Keys whose coronavirus diagnosis meant she missed the Australian Open. She will now face Maria Sakkari who also had a good win in her first-round match. Qualifier Laura Siegemund also pulled off an upset, seeing off Elena Rybakina 7-6 (9/7), 7-6 (7/5) having lost both her last encounters with Rybakina in 2019. Quarantine advantage Wang Qiang, coached by Pat Cash, quickly applied pressure to Jessica Pegula during her opening service game but succumbed 6-3, 6-1. But American Pegula fought back from several break points with defensive tennis, forcing Wang into errors with the Chinese player nonetheless scraping out an important win in the seventh game. I’m reading all your tweets and just soooo happy to finally be back on tour. Thank you all for your support! ♥️ pic.twitter.com/58mAgCrZXQ— Madison Keys (@Madison_Keys) March 2, 2021 Welcome back to the party, @Madison_Keys 🥳Takes down No.6 seed Bencic 6-4, 6-1 in her first match since September!#QatarTotalOpen2021 pic.twitter.com/I6VgYNFzF2— wta (@WTA) March 2, 2021 Wang served to stay in the set, taking it to eight games. Wang came out of the gates fighting in the second game of the second set, achieving a break back. Overall, Wang gave the impression of being out of sorts while Pegula consolidated her game and looked in form. Pegula, who was making her debut in the main draw, was clinical in the closing stages of the match, dispatching Wang in just over an hour. "I worked really hard in the (Australian Open) quarantine and got really healthy. I just decided I was going to be the mentally tough one," she said. She will face Latvia's Jelena Ostapenko in the second round. Tunisia's Ons Jabeur, who reached the Qatar Open quarter-finals in 2020 and is famed for self-proclaimed "crazy shots", efficiently saw off Russia's Anna Blinkova 6-2, 6-2. Neither has won a singles title before but Jabeur is now in a position to better her Qatar quarter-final performance last year as she progresses to the second round. Jabeur raced into the lead, buoyed by the Tunisian expats in the modest crowd, running rings around Blinkova with her deft touches. "We love to play each other here in Doha... it's going to be extremely tough," said Jabeur of number two seed Karolina Pliskova who she will face in the second round. Japan's Misaki Doi closed the day's proceedings, beating China's Zheng Saisai 6-4, 6-3.
