KYIV (REUTERS) - Bayern Munich, missing half a dozen players to Covid-19 quarantine, edged past Dynamo Kyiv 2-1 on Tuesday (Nov 23) to secure top spot in Champions League Group E with a game to spare. First-half goals from striker Robert Lewandowski, who struck with a spectacular 14th-minute overhead kick, and Kingsley Coman three minutes from halftime and amid heavy snowfall, put the German champions in front. Dynamo, who are now eliminated from the competition, cut the deficit with their maiden group-stage goal through Denys Garmash in the 70th. They then forced Bayern keeper Manuel Neuer to make a fine save in the 75th and hit the post in stoppage time as they looked for an equaliser with a strong finish. The Bavarians, desperate to bounce back from Friday's shock 2-1 loss to Augsburg in the Bundesliga, top the group on 15 points with five wins from five games. Barcelona, who face Benfica later, are in second place on six and the Portuguese side are third on four, with Dynamo bottom on one point. Bayern coach Julian Nagelsmann's options were limited with only four in-field players on the bench but Lewandowski, who has now scored has scored in each of his last nine Champions League appearances, struck with the first chance of the game. A cross into the box bounced awkwardly off a Dynamo defender, and the Polish striker connected with an acrobatic bicycle kick. The hosts almost scored an equaliser when Neuer attempted to clear a ball in the box but miskicked, sending it bouncing onto the post and wide. Instead, Coman doubled their lead three minutes before halftime, drilling in from a Corentin Tolisso cross that Lewandowski let slip through his legs. Neuer made amends for his earlier mistake with a double save to stop Mykola Shaparenko two minutes after the restart to protect their two-goal lead, but he was beaten when Garmash slotted the ball through the keeper's legs for 2-1. Dynamo were the stronger side in the closing minutes and kept Neuer busy before Viktor Tsygankov struck the post with a long range effort in stoppage time. SINGAPORE - A man was charged on Friday (Sept 24) with one count of vandalism after he allegedly used black paint to deface the walls and door of Chong Pang Neighbourhood Police Post (NPP) in Yishun Ring Road on Thursday. Abdul Rahim Abu Bakar, now 50, is said to have sprayed the words "BIG BULLY" and "ISD BIG Bully" there at 1.46pm. The Singaporean will be remanded for psychiatric observation at the Institute of Mental Health. His case has been adjourned to Oct 8. Police said in an earlier statement that officers were alerted to the case at 1.55pm on Thursday. They added that the NPP at Block 141 was one of the redesigned posts that provide residents with round-the-clock access to police services via self-help kiosks. Police said: "The man has been arrested for vandalism and suspected possession and consumption of controlled drugs. Police investigations are ongoing. "The police deal with those who commit such inconsiderate acts firmly, as such acts can inconvenience the public and may delay the police's response to persons in need." Offenders convicted of vandalism can be jailed for up to three years, receive up to eight strokes of the cane and fined. Abdul Rahim cannot be caned due to his age. SAO PAULO (REUTERS) – Brazil soccer legend Pele, 80, is in a “stable” condition after “respiratory instability” early on Friday (Sept 17) led to him being admitted to an intensive care unit, Sao Paulo’s Albert Einstein hospital said in a statement. Concerns grew about Pele’s health on Friday after local media reported that he had returned to an ICU that he had only just left earlier this week as he recovers from a colon tumour removal. The hospital said Pele “presented a brief respiratory instability” and was admitted to an ICU as a “preventive measure.” After he was stabilised, it said he had been moved to “semi-intensive care” and was now “stable from a cardiovascular and respiratory point of view.” Seeking to assuage people’s fears about the health of a soccer legend whom many consider to be the greatest player in history, Pele’s daughter, Kely Nascimento, said on Instagram that he was “recovering well... I promise!” She added: “The normal recovery scenario for a man of his age after an operation like this is sometimes two steps forward and one step back.” She also posted a photo that she said “was taken just now” of the three-time World Cup winner wearing a black vest and smiling for the camera. Pele has suffered from hip problems for years and cannot walk unaided. His public appearances were already being cut before the Covid-19 pandemic and since then he has made few unnecessary forays outside his house near Santos. LONDON (AFP) - England winger Bukayo Saka told social media platforms Instagram, Twitter and Facebook they must do more to stamp out racial abuse after being targeted in the wake of his Euro 2020 final penalty miss. After the 19-year-old's spot-kick was saved by Gianluigi Donnarumma to seal Italy's triumph at Wembley on Sunday (July 11), the Arsenal star was targeted by trolls online along with teammates Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho, who also missed penalties. "To the social media platforms Instagram, Twitter and Facebook, I don't want any child or adult to have to receive the hateful and hurtful messages that me, Marcus and Jadon have received this week," Saka said in a post on Twitter on Thursday (July 15). "I knew instantly the kind of hate that I was about to receive, and that is a sad reality that your powerful platforms are not doing enough to stop these messages. "There is no place for racism or hate of any kind in football or in any area of society and to the majority of people coming together to call out the people sending these messages, by taking action and reporting these comments to the police and by driving out the hate by being kind to one another, we will win. "Love always wins." Saka had been one of England's breakout stars as the Three Lions reached a first major tournament final for 55 years. Yet there was a sour end to his Euro experience. After Rashford hit the post, Donnarumma saved from Sancho and then Saka to crown Italy champions and condemn England to another heartbreaking loss on penalties. "I'm sorry that we couldn't bring it home for you this year, but I promise you that we will give everything we've got to make sure this generation knows how it feels to win. SINGAPORE - Lawyer Ravi Madasamy, better known as M. Ravi, was charged in a district court on Wednesday (Dec 16) with criminal defamation. The 51-year-old Singaporean is accused of defaming Law and Home Affairs Minister K. Shanmugam in a unit at People’s Park Centre at around 8.45am on Nov 6. Ravi allegedly posted on Facebook words “containing an imputation” concerning Mr Shanmugam, namely that the minister had claimed that he wields influence and controls Chief Justice Sundaresh Menon. According to court documents, Ravi is said to have intended that the post would harm Mr Shanmugam’s reputation. In an earlier statement on Nov 7, the police said that investigations had been carried out in relation to a Facebook entry that Ravi is accused of posting the day before. He alleged in the post that Singaporean lawyer Eugene Thuraisingam had told him that Mr Shanmugam had said he “wields influence over the Chief Justice” and “calls the shot and controlls (sic) Sundaresh Menon”. On Nov 6, Mr Thuraisingam wrote a letter to Mr Shanmugam, saying that “there is absolutely no truth whatsoever” to Ravi’s allegations. Mr Thuraisingam also posted a copy of the letter online on his Facebook page, referring to Ravi's Facebook post as "false and completely untrue". The police added that according to Mr Thuraisingam, Ravi made similar accusations in a Facebook post published on June 12, 2017. Mr Thuraisingam clarified with Mr Shanmugam on June 13, 2017 that Ravi's allegations were false. No police action was taken then. A pre-trial conference on the latest case is slated for Jan 6 next year. Offenders convicted of criminal defamation can be jailed for up to two years and fined. The allegations against lawyer Eugene Thuraisingam (left) was first made three years ago by lawyer M. Ravi in 2017 in a Facebook post. PHOTO: ST FILE More on this topic Related Story M. LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND (AFP) - Liverpool's youngsters shone as the depleted English champions booked their place in the last 16 of the Champions League with a 1-0 win over Ajax at Anfield on Tuesday (Dec 1). Curtis Jones took advantage of a huge error from Ajax goalkeeper Andre Onana to score the only goal, while Caoimhin Kelleher kept a clean sheet against the Dutch giants on his European debut. Victory also ensures Jurgen Klopp's men win Group D with a game to spare, allowing the German to give some of his stars a much-needed rest away to Midtjylland next week. Kelleher had to deputise for Alisson Becker, who added to Klopp's long injury list before kick-off, while Andrew Robertson needed heavy strapping applied to his foot in the first half. Liverpool were already without Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Naby Keita, Xherdan Shaqiri, Trent Alexander-Arnold and James Milner through injury. Jones has been one of the beneficiaries of those absentees with many more first-team minutes this season and the 19-year-old came closest to breaking the deadlock before half-time when his curling effort came back off the post after just six minutes. Ajax had been unbeaten in eight games since losing to at home to Liverpool in October and the visitors soon settled into their rhythm to dominate possession. All of Kelleher's previous appearances had come in domestic cup competitions and the young Irishman was made to work for his clean sheet on the big stage as he flew to his left to turn Noussair Mazraoui's long-range effort behind. Mazraoui was denied again by Kelleher early in the second half, but David Neres should have swept home the rebound when he hit the outside of the post. Ajax now must beat Atalanta in Amsterdam next week to make the last 16 and they were left to regret what might have been but for one moment of madness from Onana. A lofted cross from Neco Williams appeared easy pickings for the Ajax 'keeper but he instead tried to let the ball go behind for a goal kick and was caught out when Jones sneaked in at the back post to turn the ball into an unguarded net. The Spaniard made amends with a great save to turn Roberto Firmino's effort onto the post to keep Ajax in the game after Liverpool's best move of the match involving Jordan Henderson and Salah. But Kelleher produced an even better stop two minutes from time to parry Klaas-Jan Huntelaar's powerful header from point-blank range to see Liverpool over the line. A delighted Klopp ran onto the field to embrace his goalkeeper after the full-time whistle and the 2018/19 Champions League winners will hope to be in better health for another deep run in the knockout stages come the new year.
SINGAPORE - Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong arrived in court on Monday (Nov 30) to testify in his defamation suit against The Online Citizen (TOC) editor Terry Xu. Mr Xu's lawyer Lim Tean began his cross-examination of PM Lee. The week-long hearing could also see the Prime Minister's siblings, Dr Lee Wei Ling and Mr Lee Hsien Yang, take the witness stand to testify in court. The case revolves around claims made by TOC in an article published on Aug 15 last year, titled "PM Lee's wife, Ho Ching weirdly shares article on cutting ties with family members". The TOC article had commented on how PM Lee's wife, Ms Ho Ching, had shared a link on Facebook to an article titled "Here's why sometimes it is okay to cut ties with toxic family members". It also referenced a Facebook post that Dr Lee made in May. Mr Lee Hsien Yang had also shared the post by Dr Lee. In September last year, PM Lee asked TOC to remove the article, along with a Facebook post linking to it, and publish a full and unconditional apology. His press secretary Chang Li Lin said the allegations in the article and post were libellous and repeated several false allegations against PM Lee that were previously made by his sister. One such allegation was that PM Lee had misled his father, the late Mr Lee Kuan Yew, into thinking that his 38 Oxley Road property had been gazetted by the Singapore Government, and that it was futile for the founding prime minister to keep his direction to demolish it. Another allegation was that Mr Lee Kuan Yew removed PM Lee as an executor and trustee of his will after it was revealed to him in late 2013 that the 38 Oxley Road property had in fact not been gazetted. PM Lee later initiated legal proceedings against Mr Xu when the latter refused to take the article and post down or apologise. He also filed a suit against the Malaysian author of the article, one Rubaashini Shunmuganathan. His lawyers said the article had gravely injured PM Lee's character and reputation and that PM Lee had been "brought into public scandal, odium and contempt". The case could see PM Lee taking the witness stand to testify in court, Ms Chang said in September. She noted that although PM Lee had chosen not to sue his siblings as it would further besmirch his parents' names, this did not mean he would not ever take legal action should it become necessary. He said the TOC article merely quoted directly from public comments made by Mr Lee and Dr Lee and that they would have knowledge of particulars relating to the truth of the allegations.
