LONDON (REUTERS) - Crystal Palace forward Jordan Ayew scored his first goal for the club in 13 months to secure a 2-2 home draw with Southampton in the Premier League on Wednesday (Dec 15). The Ghanaian netted from close range in the 65th minute after quickfire goals from James Ward-Prowse and Armando Broja had cancelled out Wilfried Zaha's early opener for Palace in a pulsating first half. The result lifted Palace two places up to 11th on 20 points from 17 games while Southampton stayed 15th on 17 points, six above the bottom three although 18th-placed Burnley have two games in hand. Ward-Prowse had mixed feelings about the outcome after the Saints faded away in the second half. "I don't think we started the game very well but got back into it, a scrappy goal we conceded ultimately cost us all three points," he said. Zaha struck in the second minute when he cut inside and fired a low shot past two defenders inside the near post, with Palace missing several chances to double their lead before Ward-Prowse levelled with a 32nd-minute free kick. The Southampton captain curled in a delightful effort from 25 metres with home goalkeeper Jack Butland unable to keep it out although he got his fingertips to the ball. With the home side reeling, Albania striker Broja turned the tide in the 36th minute when he took the ball in his stride and drilled a low shot from 20 metres into the bottom right corner. Visiting keeper Willy Caballero denied Odsonne Edouard with a double save in the 58th minute and also deflected away the striker's shot seven minutes later but Ayew was perfectly placed to sweep in the rebound from a tight angle. Neither side were able to find a breakthrough in the closing stages, with Palace looking the more likely to score with several raids down the right flank. LONDON (REUTERS) - Conor Gallagher scored twice and James Tomkins was also on target as Crystal Palace arrested a run of three defeats by beating Everton 3-1 at Selhurst Park on Sunday (Dec 12) to renew pressure on visiting manager Rafael Benitez. Gallagher fired home four minutes before halftime as Palace took advantage of a defensive error and Tomkins stabbed home from a corner midway through the second half. Salomon Rondon pulled one back for Everton with 20 minutes left before Gallagher whipped a stunning curling shot from outside the area into the top of the net to ensure the home side's win in stoppage time. The result lifted Palace above Everton in the Premier League standings as they moved up two places to 12th. It also heaped pressure back on under-fire Benitez, who had earned some respite on Monday when Everton came from behind to beat Arsenal, but whose side have now won only one of their last 10 matches. Gallagher's opening goal came after an errant back pass from Everton's Demarai Gray was intercepted by Jordan Ayew, who then passed from the left into Gallagher's path for a polished finish. Everton's defence allowed Will Hughes' 62nd-minute corner to evade them and find Tomkins unmarked at the back post, where the Palace defender had ample time to recover from an initial poor first touch to stab home and double the lead. There was a further sign of potential discord at Everton when Brazilian striker Richarlison provided a petulant response to being substituted, but it was his replacement who reduced the deficit in the 70th minute to offer the possibility of a comeback. Rondon set up a shot for Abdoulaye Doucoure and then reacted quickest when the Frenchman's effort was blocked, sliding home the rebound. Five minutes later Everton went close to an equaliser when Rondon passed back for Andros Townsend, after a storming run down the right from Ben Godfrey, but the effort was blocked. Substitute Anthony Gordon was free on goal in the 85th minute but his shot was saved by Vicente Guaita as Everton squandered another opportunity to equalise. But Gallagher ensured the win as he took the ball from Seamus Coleman and then struck home a superb effort to underline his promise. "This game was massive for us after losing the last three,"said Gallagher. LONDON (REUTERS) - Manchester United were held to a third successive 0-0 draw in all competitions after they failed to break down Crystal Palace in a dour Premier League clash played in foggy conditions at Selhurst Park on Wednesday (March 3). The result left United second on 51 points from 27 games, 14 behind runaway leaders Manchester City ahead of the Manchester derby on Sunday while Palace stayed 13th on 34 points. After goalless stalemates at Chelsea on Sunday and against Real Sociedad, which completed a 4-0 aggregate win over the Spanish side in the Europa League last Thursday, a weary-looking United lacked edge again. Striker Edinson Cavani was a surprise starter after missing the last four games with a muscle injury and he spurned a gilt-edged chance in the 14th minute when he skied a close-range shot over the bar. Nemanja Matic and Marcus Rashford also went close for United in the first half before a superb Joel Ward clearance denied Cavani a tap-in from three metres in the 44th minute. Andros Townsend fired just wide for Palace on the hour and the home side then missed the game's best chance in the 90th minute as Dean Henderson kept out Patrick van Aanholt who was one-on-one with the United goalkeeper.
BRIGHTON (AFP) - Christian Benteke's stunning 95th-minute volley snatched a 2-1 win for Crystal Palace at Brighton on Monday (Feb 22) to ease fears the Eagles could be dragged into a relegation battle. Brighton are still looking over their shoulders at the bottom three after a night that summed up so much of the season for Graham Potter's men. The Seagulls had 25 shots to Palace's three and nearly 75 percent possession, but failed to make it count in front of goal. Roy Hodgson's side were without the talismanic presence of Wilfried Zaha due to injury, but Jean-Philippe Mateta made an impact on just his second start since joining on loan from Mainz. Jordan Ayew's cross from the right allowed the Frenchman to back-heel home on the turn and claim his first Palace goal on 28 minutes. The visitors were then pinned back as Brighton dominated, but Neal Maupay, Adam Lallana and Leandro Trossard all wasted chances. When the hosts did equalise 10 minutes into the second period it was thanks to right wing-back Joel Veltman's first goal for the club. Pascal Gross' low shot was blocked by Palace defender Tyrick Mitchell as he battled inside the box with substitute Danny Welbeck and fell kindly for the Dutch defender to sweep home left-footed. Palace then clung on for a point until completely against the run of play they snatched all three deep into stoppage time. Andros Townsend's cross beyond the far post did not seem to pose any danger until Benteke connected flush on the volley to send the ball into the far corner. Victory takes Palace 10 points clear of the relegation zone, while Brighton remain just four clear of in-form Fulham.
LEEDS, England (AFP) - Patrick Bamford scored his 100th career goal as Leeds United cruised to a 2-0 win against Crystal Palace on Monday (Feb 8). Marcelo Bielsa's side took the lead through Jack Harrison's early strike at Elland Road. Bamford reached his century after the interval to seal Leeds' third win in their last four Premier League games. His 12th goal of the season was a sweet moment for Bamford, who had a miserable loan spell at Palace in 2015-16 while on the books at Chelsea. Leeds are up to 10th place and their impressive first season back in the top-flight could yet feature a late push for a Europa League berth. A first clean-sheet since December 29 was another welcome boost for Bielsa after six games without keeping the opposition at bay. Mid-table Palace have now lost 17 of their past 19 league matches without Ivory Coast forward Wilfried Zaha, who was sidelined after suffering a hamstring injury in the win at Newcastle on Tuesday. Jean-Philippe Mateta, a January loan signing from Mainz, made his Palace debut in Zaha's absence, but his first contribution was one to forget. Leeds made the perfect start in the third minute when Tyrick Mitchell's clearance bounced off Mateta. The ball ran to Harrison on the edge of the area and his shot took a substantial deflection off Gary Cahill before looping into the net. It was Leeds' fastest Premier League goal for 17 years and they nearly followed it with another moments later. Bamford's well-timed run across Cahill gave him the space to test Palace keeper Vicente Guaita with a powerful header. Bamford missed a better chance after intercepting a loose pass from Luka Milivojevic and evading Cahill, only to blaze wide with just Guaita to beat. Picked out by Kalvin Phillips' cross, Pascal Struijk should have doubled Leeds' advantage before half-time, but he headed woefully wide from three yards. Palace had won just one of their last 23 league games after conceding the first goal. Bamford ensured they would not improve on that dismal sequence when he netted his landmark goal in the 52nd minute. Mateusz Klich found Raphinha in the Palace area and his shot was pushed out by Guaita, with Bamford pouncing on the loose ball with a clinical close-range finish. Any hopes of a late Palace fightback were banished when Eberechi Eze wasted their best opportunity with a woeful finish that flew high over the bar. Harrison could have given the scoreline an even worse look for lethargic Palace in the final minutes, but his shot rebounded off the bar.
LONDON (REUTERS) - West Ham United became the latest club to challenge the Premier League hierarchy after Tomas Soucek's double helped secure a well-deserved 3-2 win at London rivals Crystal Palace and took them up to fourth spot on Tuesday (Jan 26). Relegation battlers last season, David Moyes's Hammers side are now contenders for a European spot in what continues to be a fluid situation in the upper reaches of the table. Palace had made a perfect start when Wilfried Zaha struck after two minutes at a drizzly Selhurst Park but a West Ham side brimming with confidence hit back to claim a fourth straight league victory. Czech Soucek headed the equaliser in the ninth minute and gave his side the lead after 25 minutes in a dominant first half by the visitors for whom Michail Antonio twice struck the post. Craig Dawson's header gave West Ham breathing space midway through the second half and Palace could not respond until deep into stoppage time when Michy Batshuayi struck a consolation. West Ham moved above Everton, Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool into fourth place with 35 points from 20 games although their nearest rivals all have games in hand. Palace have now won once in their last seven league games and remain in 13th spot on 23 points. Commanding display While the scoreline looked close it was a commanding display by West Ham who would have won by more with sharper finishing. "Really pleased with the performance and the comeback. Our finishing boots weren't on though," Moyes, whose side are the first in the club's history to win their opening six games of a calendar year in all competitions, told reporters. "I want to grow the club steadily, we are doing brilliantly but we need to take it steadily." It had looked bright for Palace when an intricate passing move ended with Zaha combining superbly with Christian Benteke before fizzing a low shot past goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski. Rather than build on that, though, Palace fell apart. Within seven minutes West Ham were level when Pablo Fornals worked his way into the area and found Antonio whose clever flicked cross was headed home by Soucek. From the restart Palace gave the ball away and Antonio hit the woodwork but West Ham went ahead when Aaron Creswell's free kick was missed by Antonio but Soucek was lurking to volley in at the far post. Antonio then wasted a golden opportunity when he diverted Creswell's shot against the post when it looked easier to score. Zaha had a chance for Palace immediately after the break but Fabianski saved well and when Dawson headed home in the 65th minute West Ham were in complete control. "I thought we lost to the better team, our first half performance was nowhere near as good as we expected," Palace manager Roy Hodgson said.
LONDON (AFP) - Arsenal's recent revival ground to a halt as Crystal Palace frustrated the Gunners in a scrappy 0-0 Premier League draw at the Emirates Stadium on Thursday (Jan 14). Mikel Arteta's side had won their previous four matches in all competitions, but they were fortunate to extend their unbeaten run to five games. Palace were unable to convert several first half chances and, although Arsenal improved after the interval, they missed a chance to climb into the top half of the Premier League. Arsenal sit in 11th place, eight points adrift of the Champions League places as they continue to pay the price for their worst start to a season since 1974-75. Just before Christmas, Arsenal were only four points above the relegation zone, so their current position 12 points away from the bottom three affords Arteta some much-needed breathing space. But this disjointed display underlined the attacking flaws that have stopped Arsenal's building on last season's FA Cup triumph. Palace have only won one of their past eight matches in all competitions and are one point behind Arsenal in 13th. Emile Smith-Rowe, Arsenal's promising young midfielder, started after scoring against Newcastle as a substitute last weekend. But Kiernan Tierney was absent with muscle tightness and the Gunners missed the Scotland left-back's busy presence. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has endured a difficult season and, once again, Arsenal's captain was a diffident figure. The Gabon forward briefly sparked into life and tested Vicente Guaita with a fierce strike that has parried by the Palace keeper. But Palace were finding their feet on a wet evening and Granit Xhaka had to make a perfectly timed sliding tackle to stop Wilfried Zaha getting a shot away after the forward slalomed into the penalty area. Palace broke through the Arsenal defence again when Christian Benteke scooped his shot wastefully over from 10 yards after good work by Tyrick Mitchell. James Tomkins was inches away from giving Roy Hodgson's men the lead as the Palace defender got above Rob Holding to glance his header against the bar from Eberechi Eze's free-kick. Arsenal were struggling to get out of their own half and Bernd Leno had to make a superb save to repel Benteke's header from Mitchell's cross. Arteta's half-time team talk seemed like it might have the desired effect and Hector Bellerin drilled just wide from the edge of the area in the opening minute of the second half. Arsenal threatened again as Bukayo Saka forced Guaita to block at the near post before Alexandre Lacazette blasted into the side-netting after a flowing move. Arteta sent on Nicolas Pepe and Thomas Partey, back after a month out with a thigh injury. But the expected push never came and Palace were able to keep the misfiring Gunners at bay with ease.
LONDON (REUTERS) - Late goals by Callum Wilson and Joelinton earned Newcastle United a 2-0 win at Crystal Palace on Friday (Nov 27) as they got back to winning ways after consecutive Premier League defeats. It looked as though the points would be shared on a chilly night in south-east London but just when Palace were threatening, Steve Bruce's visitors struck. Wilson's neat finish in the 87th minute following a counter-attack gave Newcastle the lead and 100 seconds later they sealed the points when Brazilian Joelinton's shot deflected past keeper Vicente Guaita for his first league goal of the season. Newcastle's win lifted them to 10th in the table on 14 points from 10 games with Palace 13th and a point behind.
LONDON, ENGLAND (REUTERS) - Leeds United suffered another heavy defeat with a 4-1 reverse at Crystal Palace in the Premier League on Saturday (Nov 7). Marcelo Bielsa's side, who were beaten by the same scoreline at home to Leicester City on Monday, slumped to 14th place with the loss while Palace moved up to sixth, on 13 points from eight games, just three points behind leaders Southampton. Scott Dann headed Palace into a 12th minute lead with a thundering header from an Eberi Eze corner. Leeds thought they had drawn level with a nice finish from Patrick Bamford but the effort was ruled out for a narrow offside by VAR. After that let-off, Palace doubled their lead with a brilliant free kick from Eze, his first goal for the club, as he struck a 20-metre shot into the top corner. Bamford did score with a confident drive after being set up by Polish midfielder Mateusz Klich's headed pass when he buried the ball in the bottom corner for his seventh goal of the campaign. But Palace restored their two-goal advantage just before the interval when Helder Costa's sliding tackle deflected a low cross from Wifried Zaha inside the near post, confounding Leeds goalkeeper Illan Meslier. Zaha also had a hand in Palace's fourth, running at the Leeds defence before slipping the ball to Jordan Ayew who made no mistake. Leeds have conceded 17 goals this season, more than any other team in the league, an issue Bielsa must urgently address. Palace boss Roy Hodgson was understandably pleased with a rare goal feast from his team. "It was a highly competitive game. We played well and were good value for our victory," he said. "It was a good win against a team that has started so well and has a style of play which is different to what we're used to seeing. In terms of our attacking play, we were excellent."
