Football: Man City boss Guardiola urges players to get booster shots

(REUTERS) - Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola urged his players to get their Covid-19 vaccine booster shots and advised them to be careful amid a surge in cases in Britain. British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said on Monday (Dec 13) that at least one person has died in the United Kingdom after contracting the Omicron coronavirus variant. The UK Health Security Agency said Omicron - first detected in South Africa, Botswana and Hong Kong in late November - can overcome the immunity of those who have had two shots of vaccines such as AstraZeneca or Pfizer-BioNTech. "Absolutely, the doctors suggest they have to do it," Guardiola told reporters on Monday, when asked about players getting the booster shots. "We speak with the players every day to say be careful. Stay healthy, wear masks, social distance. "It's Christmas, the tendency is to party and go out. But the virus is still here. The virus doesn't allow you to suffer much, but cases rise day by day, so just be careful." Tottenham Hotspur recorded 13 Covid-19 cases at the club last week, while Leicester City and Manchester United were also affected by the virus. City, top of the English Premier League on 38 points after 16 games, are due to host 15th-placed Leeds United on Tuesday. Guardiola said Leeds, who are 12 points behind City, will pose a challenge even in the absence of top striker Patrick Bamford and midfielder Kalvin Phillips, who are out injured. "Leeds is one of our toughest opponents," Guardiola said. "They play every week in a special unique way and we play against the special and unique way just two times a year. It is completely different to other opponents. "Bamford was injured for a long time now, Phillips too... "But if there is one person who doesn't complain about what happens, it is Marcelo (Bielsa). He loves to work when the situation is tough." Guardiola said all players are available for Tuesday's game, except for the suspended Joao Cancelo and Ferran Torres, who is recovering from a foot injury. Football: Manchester United suffer Covid-19 outbreak

LONDON (REUTERS) - Manchester United suffered an outbreak of Covid-19 among players and staff on Sunday (Dec 12), jeopardising their next Premier League game against Brentford. United, who won 1-0 at Norwich City on Saturday, are due to travel to Brentford on Tuesday. Website The Athletic reported that a small number of players and staff had returned positive lateral flow tests on Sunday morning and were sent home before the team's training session, with the Premier League notified about the situation. The report also said that the group that travelled to Norwich had returned negative results before Saturday's game. Brighton & Hove Albion's home game against Tottenham Hotspur, due to be played on Sunday, was called off due to a number of Covid-19 cases at Tottenham last week. Britain raised its Covid alert level on Sunday in response to the rapid spread of the Omicron variant of the virus. Football: Manchester City go top as Chelsea suffer defeat at West Ham

LONDON (REUTERS) - Chelsea paid a heavy price for a 3-2 defeat at West Ham United as first Liverpool, then Manchester City, leapfrogged them in the Premier League title race on Saturday (Dec 4), with City ending the day on top for the first time this season. Thomas Tuchel's Chelsea began the day with a narrow lead and twice went in front at the London Stadium, only to be stunned by a late goal from substitute defender Arthur Masuaku. It looked as though Liverpool had let Chelsea off the hook as their later clash at Wolverhampton Wanderers went into stoppage time still goalless. But Divock Origi, making his 100th appearance as a Liverpool substitute, latched on to a Mohamed Salah pass to smash a winner past Wolves keeper Jose Sa in the 94th minute. In the day's late kickoff, Manchester City outclassed Watford in a 3-1 victory at Vicarage Road with Raheem Sterling paving the way before Bernardo Silva struck twice. Chelsea had seemed to be in control of their game after 28 minutes when Thiago Silva scored with a header from a Mason Mount corner but the European champions gifted the hosts a penalty in the 40th minute when Jorginho put his goalkeeper Edouard Mendy under pressure with a poor back pass. Mendy brought down Jarrod Bowen for a penalty that was converted by Manuel Lanzini. Mount restored Chelsea's lead with a superb volley four minutes later only for West Ham to draw level early in the second half when Bowen fired in hard and low. Masuaku clinched it for the fourth-placed hosts in the 87th minute with a cross that flew into the goal. It meant Chelsea slipped to third spot with 33 points from 15 games, one point behind Liverpool and two behind Manchester City. West Ham have 27 points. "We are not good enough in the details at the moment,"Tuchel told reporters. "We do too many big mistakes." Wolves had defended resolutely against a Liverpool side who have been in unstoppable goalscoring form. But all their hard work came to nothing as Origi showed what a great impact substitute he can be, with his winner sparking wild celebrations on the Liverpool bench. "It was clear: when you don't score you just have to keep going and that's what we did," manager Juergen Klopp said. "And then Divock Origi, the legend, came and finished it off for us. I love it." "There are always things we have to improve but right now, the guys are playing at a really good level," manager Pep Guardiola said. "We scored three beautiful goals and we could have scored more." Newcastle United's wait for a first league victory of the season is over after Callum Wilson's goal earned them a 1-0 victory against fellow relegation battlers Burnley. The win lifted Newcastle off the bottom on goal difference, above Norwich City who play at Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday. Brighton & Hove Albion drew for the eighth time this season as Neal Maupay rescued a point in a 1-1 draw at Southampton. Maupay struck in the eighth minute of stoppage time to deny Saints their fourth league win of the season after Armando Broja had give them a first-half lead. Football: Jorginho redemption as Chelsea rescue Man Utd draw

LONDON (AFP) - Chelsea midfielder Jorginho rescued a 1-1 draw against Manchester United as the Italian's penalty atoned for the blunder that allowed Jadon Sancho to put the visitors in front on Sunday (Nov 28). Thomas Tuchel's side dominated for long periods at Stamford Bridge but fell behind when Jorginho's poor control presented Sancho with the chance to score early in the second half. Jorginho made amends for that mistake as he stroked home a penalty after Aaron Wan-Bissaka fouled Thiago Silva. It was the least Chelsea deserved after they laid seige to United's goal and saw David de Gea make a series of fine saves. Chelsea, unbeaten in their last 11 games in all competitions, remain top of the Premier League but are now just one point ahead of second-placed Manchester City, who defeated West Ham earlier on Sunday. United, in eighth place, are 12 points adrift of the leaders but this gritty display was something to build on after a traumatic period. Michael Carrick was in charge of United for a second successive game after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's sacking, with the appointment of Ralf Rangnick as interim manager until the end of this season expected to be confirmed shortly. United are in discussions with Rangnick, who is working as director of sports and development at Lokomotiv Moscow. But in the meantime Carrick had overseen a vital win at Villarreal in the Champions League on Tuesday and he used the same defensive blueprint to frustrate Chelsea. Given Rangnick's preference for a intense pressing game-plan that may not suit Cristiano Ronaldo, it was intriguing to see the sometimes diffident Portugal striker left on the bench by Carrick until the 63rd minute. With Bruno Fernandes as the false nine and Marcus Rashford and Sancho on the flanks, United set up for a point and got exactly that. Hakim Ziyech found space in the United area early on but his low shot was saved by De Gea, setting the tone for the rest of the afternoon. Frenetic finale Moments later, Marcos Alonso's header from Silva's long pass caught Victor Lindelof and Wan-Bissaka out of position. Callum Hudson-Odoi seemed certain to score when he pounced on the loose ball, only for De Gea to repel the forward's close-range effort with a superb save. Manchester United technical director Darren Fletcher was on the bench wearing an ear-piece, sparking suggestions he was in contact with Rangnick. Rangnick is regarded as the godfather of 'gegenpressing', the tactics copied so successfully by Tuchel and Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp, and United had spells when they closed down Chelsea with more authority than they showed in the final weeks of Solskjaer's reign. But if Rangnick was offering advice to the United bench ahead of his impending appointment, he might have been concerned at how deep they were sitting. Antonio Rudiger was left in acres of space when his 25-yard drive was tipped onto the crossbar by De Gea. United had ventured into the Chelsea area only twice in the first half, but they broke out to snatch the lead five minutes after the interval with their first shot on target. Fernandes' hoofed clearance should have been easy for Jorginho, but Chelsea's captain made a hash of dealing with the high ball and Sancho was rewarded for pressing hard as he stole possession, sprinted clear on goal and slotted past Edouard Mendy. Chelsea's response was emphatic and their pressure was finally rewarded in the 69th minute after Wan-Bissaka's flailing challenge on Silva conceded a needless penalty. Jorginho had missed a high-profile penalty for Italy against Switzerland recently, but the midfielder coolly sent De Gea the wrong way from the spot. In a frenetic finale, Rudiger could have won it in the final seconds when he volleyed over from Christian Pulisic's cross.

Football: Man City take top spot, PSG through despite defeat in Champions League

MANCHESTER (AFP) - Manchester City came from behind to secure top spot in Group A with a 2-1 win over Paris Saint-Germain as both sides qualified for the Champions League last 16 on Wednesday. Kylian Mbappe put the French giants in front against the run of play five minutes into the second half. But PSG run the risk of being drawn against the likes of Bayern Munich, Chelsea or Liverpool in the last 16 after Raheem Sterling and Gabriel Jesus turned the game around for the English champions. PSG boss Mauricio Pochettino had to fend off questions in his pre-match press conference over whether he may be making a permanent move to Manchester to take over the vacant managerial role at United. The Argentine's first year in the French capital has been far from plain sailing despite a 11-point lead at the top of Ligue 1. Lionel Messi's arrival to form a fearsome front three alongside Mbappe and Neymar has heaped expectation upon Pochettino to deliver a first Champions League crown to Paris. The blessing and curse of that richly-talented trio was in evidence as the visitors were largely overrun but suddenly clicked to create the opening goal. City's collective cohesion had the better of the clash of styles, but lacked the clinical edge offered by PSG's Galacticos. Presnel Kimpembe cleared Rodri's goal-bound header off the line before Achraf Hakimi did likewise to turn Riyad Mahrez's shot that was destined for the top corner over the bar. Despite missing the midfield trio of Kevin De Bruyne, Jack Grealish and Phil Foden, City were still creating chances at will as Messi, Neymar and Mbappe did little to help their teammates defend. Ilkay Gundogan had the hosts' best chance before the break, but his curling effort came crashing back off the post. Mbappe wasted the one opportunity PSG did muster in the first half as he pounced on a John Stones mistake, but fired over. The Frenchman was not so wasteful five minutes after the break as he drilled low through Ederson's legs from Messi's deflected cross. But the pattern of the game remained unchanged as City charged forward and finally found a way through. Kyle Walker's cross escaped Jesus, but rolled kindly for Sterling to prod in just his fourth goal of the season at the back post. Keylor Navas then produced a stunning finger-tip save to deny Jesus. Pochettino responded by introducing Angel Di Maria to add to his attacking trident and he teed up Neymar with a great chance to restore PSG's lead, only for the Brazilian to slot wide with just his international teammate Ederson to beat. Moments later another slick team move from City created a deserved winner. Mahrez's cross to the back post picked out Bernardo Silva, who nonchalantly turned the ball back into the path of Jesus to calmly slot home. Victory gives City an unassailable four-point lead at the top of the section with just one game to go. But RB Leipzig's 5-0 thrashing of Club Brugge means PSG are also guaranteed to go through in second place.

Football: Ronaldo fires Manchester United into Champions League last 16

VILLARREAL, SPAIN (AFP) - Cristiano Ronaldo’s excellent goal helped Manchester United begin life after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer with a 2-0 victory over Villarreal on Tuesday (Nov 23) and seal their place in the Champions League last 16. Ronaldo’s splendid lob was then capped by Jadon Sancho’s first United goal at the Ceramica, where caretaker manager Michael Carrick dropped Bruno Fernandes to the bench. Fernandes was on the pitch for both of United’s goals after being brought on in the 66th minute, but it was Ronaldo who proved the difference again, his instinctive shot in the 78th unlocking a game that looked destined to remain goalless. After a turbulent few days that saw Solskjaer sacked following Saturday’s humiliating 4-1 defeat by Watford, United were able to calm the storm with a win that leaves them three points clear at the top of Group F. With Villarreal, in second, up against Atalanta in the final game, United, who finish at home to Young Boys, are now guaranteed to go through, and most likely in first place. Carrick has only been placed in temporary charge, after the club outlined their plan on Sunday to install an interim coach before then making a permanent appointment next summer. Numerous candidates have been linked, with former Barcelona coach Ernesto Valverde the latest name to emerge on Tuesday. Carrick, who wore a black suit and won the Champions League once in his 12 years as a Manchester United player, had been surprisingly reluctant to distinguish himself from Solskjaer in his first press conference on Monday. He said “we’ll have to see” when asked if he could lift United out of their slump and admitted he had “similar beliefs” to the Norwegian and “that’s why we worked together for so long”. His team selection, though, was bolder, with Fernandes the statement change. The Portuguese playmaker was replaced by Donny van de Beek, while Anthony Martial, Alex Telles and Fred came in for Marcus Rashford, Luke Shaw and Nemanja Matic. None of those promoted really justified their inclusion. Telles was twice exposed in the first half while Martial was largely anonymous before coming off for Rashford in the second half. Villarreal, the Europa League champions who will likely have to beat Atalanta now to make it through, had chances but failed to take them and were punished. Scott McTominay went close with a header at the back post and Arnaut Danjuma fired wide. Yeremi Pino had the best opening when another Danjuma shot span out to him on the right. He made space away from Telles, only to lash into the side-netting. Telles was struggling to contain the lively Yeremi and misjudged a long punt down field which his opponent pulled back for Manuel Trigueros but David de Gea palmed away. Ronaldo was largely a frustrated figure, flailing his arms as his teammates turned down opportunities to advance the ball quicker. There was a free-kick on the edge of the area, but he drove it into the wall. The game grew more cagey in the second half. Trigueros again tested De Gea with an effort banged into the ground but again, the Spaniard reacted fast. With 24 minutes left, Carrick brought on Fernandes and Rashford for Martial and Van de Beek. Fernandes gave the pass from which Sancho should have scored, the winger darting in off the right, only to finish straight at Geronimo Rulli. The changes had given United impetus and in the 78th minute, Ronaldo struck. There was still time for another and again Ronaldo was involved, winning the ball back and then sent clear down the left. Football: Man City sweep aside Everton to close in on EPL leaders Chelsea

MANCHESTER (AFP) - Raheem Sterling, Rodri and Bernardo Silva got the goals as Manchester City cruised to a 3-0 win over Everton to move within three points of Premier League leaders Chelsea. With the focus of the football world on events across Manchester on Sunday (ov 21) as United sacked manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, City made light work of seeing off an Everton side still decimated by injuries to key players. Pep Guardiola was also without Kevin De Bruyne after the Belgian tested positive for coronavirus and the injured Jack Grealish, but still had far too much in reserve for the Toffees. Sterling was denied a penalty midway through the first half by a VAR review after referee Stuart Attwell initially pointed to the spot for a trip by Michael Keane. The England international did not have to wait long to net on his 300th Premier League appearance as he turned home Joao Cancelo's sensational pass with the outside of his right foot for his 98th goal in the English top flight. Without the presence of Dominic Calvert-Lewin up front, Everton rarely threatened. Rafael Benitez's men have now taken just two points from the last 18 on offer in the Premier League to drop into the bottom half of the table and just six points clear of the relegation zone. Rodri's stunning long-range drive into the top corner 10 minutes after the break ended the game as a contest. He said: "Fortunately it was in - a beauty. It is the feeling... imagine the strikers scoring 20 goals, I score two or three and I'm the happiest man. It's an incredible feeing. I was watching the screen to realise the goal I scored." City were then content to cruise for the final half-hour with one eye on Wednesday's Champions League clash with Paris Saint-Germain. Sterling should have slotted home his second of the afternoon from Riyad Mahrez's inviting cross, but was instead denied by international teammate Jordan Pickford as he tried to round the goalkeeper. City did get a deserved third five minutes from time when Silva followed up after Cole Palmer's shot was blocked. On the title race, Rodri said: "We know it's going until the last games of the season, with lots of contenders. We have to be ourselves and if we keep the same way we will be in fighting." Football: Salah hits hat-trick as Liverpool humiliate Man Utd

MANCHESTER (AFP) - Liverpool inflicted a historic hammering on Manchester United as Mohamed Salah scored a hat-trick in a 5-0 win at Old Trafford on Sunday (Oct 24), leaving Ole Gunnar Solskjaer clinging to his job. For the first time in Premier League history, United trailed 4-0 at half-time and failed to score in a hopelessly one-sided contest. The Red Devils have now taken a run of one point from a possible 12 in the league. Naby Keita started the rout before Diogo Jota doubled Liverpool's lead inside 15 minutes. Salah then took centre stage to take his tally for the season to 15 goals in 12 appearances and become the top-scoring African player in Premier League history in the process. Highlights: Manchester United 0-5 Liverpool | Salah hat-trick stuns Old Trafford To round off a miserable day for United, Paul Pogba lasted less than 15 minutes as a second-half substitute as he was shown a straight red card for a reckless lunge that forced Keita to leave the pitch on a stretcher. Liverpool's first victory in front of a crowd at Old Trafford under Jurgen Klopp moves them back above Manchester City into second, just a point behind leaders Chelsea. By contrast, United's hopes of a first league title since 2013 already look over as they remain eight points off the leaders. That gap is likely to grow in the coming weeks with Tottenham and City to come in the next fortnight before an international break. Whether Solskjaer will still be in charge come November is now in serious doubt as he has completely failed to form a balanced team from a talented collection of star players. The Norwegian will wonder what might have been had Bruno Fernandes not fired over a glorious chance to open the scoring on three minutes. But soon the defensive cracks that have blighted United's season began to appear. Salah teed up Keita to open the floodgates after just five minutes with a composed low finish past David de Gea. United came from 2-0 down at the break to beat Atalanta 3-2 in the Champions League on Wednesday. But former midfielder Paul Scholes' warning after that match that Liverpool would be 4-0 up in 45 minutes if handed the same space to attack into came to fruition. We just tried to play our football and play in between the lines to create more chances. We did that and were lucky to score. “As long as the team keep winning I am happy and to give my best to the team to win. The first goal I gave to Naby Keita to score." Salah is the first away player to score a treble at Old Trafford since Brazil legend Ronaldo in 2003. Salah has now scored in 10 consecutive games and overtook Didier Drogba with his 105th Premier League goal when the Egyptian turned home Keita's cut-back with the United defence all at sea. The 29-year-old has now scored in 10 successive games in all competitions, while Liverpool are unbeaten in their last 22 games in all competitions. “We know what it takes to win the Premier League, we did it two years ago. A big win here but still only three points,” Salah said. “We try to win each game and try to win the title. We need to play to win everything. From our heads from pre-season, we need to win the Premier League and hopefully we go for that. “After half-time we were talking in the dressing room to just keep going and score as many as we could." Liverpool inflicted further punishment before the break when Salah smashed home his 14th goal in 12 games this season at De Gea's near post. Salah then completed his hat-trick with another cool finish five minutes into the second-half after Jordan Henderson's pass dissected the United defence once more. Ronaldo thought he had pulled a goal back only for a VAR review to catch him in an offside position. Another VAR check saw the end of Pogba's brief cameo for a horrendous studs-up challenge on Keita that forced the Guinean off. Solskjaer sacrificed Fernandes and Marcus Rashford to try and stop the bleeding as Old Trafford emptied during the final half hour. De Gea ensured Liverpool failed to match their record margin of victory against United with an incredible save from Alexander-Arnold's drive. However, that did not subdue the mood among the travelling fans as they mockingly chanted for Solskjaer to remain in his job. Football: Silva and De Bruyne give City win over Burnley

MANCHESTER (REUTERS) - Bernardo Silva and Kevin De Bruyne were on target as Manchester City beat Burnley 2-0 at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday (Oct 16) to stay within a point of Premier League leaders Liverpool. It was lacklustre display from Pep Guardiola's side against winless opponents but after the difficulties of re-assembling his squad after the international break, the City boss was satisfied with three relatively comfortably earned points. City, with American Zack Steffen deputising for Ederson in goal given the Brazilian's late return from national team duty, gave a start to Raheem Sterling, who had said this week that he would consider a move away from the club. Sterling made little impact, however, in an unusually punchless City attack with Riyad Mahrez far from his best on the right and Phil Foden the brightest down the middle. Portuguese midfielder Silva opened the scoring in the 12th minute, tapping in after Burnley keeper Nick Pope had pushed out a well-struck low drive from Foden. Burnley caused City some problems however and Ivorian attacker Maxwel Cornet could have brought them level when he latched on to a ball over the top from Dwight McNeil but City keeper Zack Steffen did well to save with his legs. Josh Brownhill then screwed a shot wide from inside the box after some hesitant defending from City as Burnley ended the first half strongly. Riyad Mahrez went close to doubling City's lead after the break, clipping the cross-bar after a smart pull-back from Silva. City finally put the contest to bed, in the 70th minute, when Ashley Westwood failed to clear for Burnley and the ball fell to De Bruyne who smashed home with his left foot. Burnley should have pulled one back in the latter stages but a stretching Chris Wood put his shot over the bar with City's defence having allowed him space. Pep Guardiola's side are on 17 points from eight games, in second place, with Liverpool top on 18 points. Chelsea could return to the top of the table if they win at Brentford later on Saturday. "After the international break it's always a little bit difficult to come to a rhythm and I know how good Burnley are. They did really well, they have good players," Guardiola said. "We did well in the second half and played really well and could've scored more goals. Good result, after the international break we take the victory and look what's next." Burnley's last four visits to City had ended in 5-0 defeats and manager Sean Dyche was pleased to have put up a better fight this time. "We get nothing from the game but I was actually pleased with the performance against a top side," Dyche said. "They created chances, not as many as in the past but I was pleased we were creating quality chances and that's the challenge we've had all season - taking our chances." Burnley are next to bottom with three points. Football: Ronaldo takes United joint top with Chelsea, City win and Spurs slump

MANCHESTER, ENGLAND (REUTERS) - Two goals from returning hero Cristiano Ronaldo sent Manchester United joint top of the Premier League after early season pace-setters Tottenham Hotspur fell to a surprise 3-0 loss at Crystal Palace. Champions Manchester City made it three wins out of four with a 1-0 win at Leicester City while Arsenal got their first victory of the campaign, with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang on target in a 1-0 win over Norwich City. Manchester United and Chelsea lead on 10 points with an identical goal difference after four games with Manchester City a point behind along with Brighton & Hove Albion, who won 1-0 at promoted Brentford, and Spurs. Chelsea beat Aston Villa 3-0 in the late game to register their 600th victory in the Premier League. Romelu Lukaku and Mateo Kovacic finally opened their accounts at Stamford Bridge, with the Belgian striker scoring twice, while goalkeeper Edouard Mendy denied Villa numerous times to keep his third clean sheet. Ronaldo's return to United from Juventus last month brought with it the promise of excitement and goals at Old Trafford and his second debut certainly lived up to the billing. The 36-year-old fired his side ahead just before the break, pouncing to slot home from close range after Newcastle keeper Freddie Woodman was unable to hold on to a low drive from Mason Greenwood. After Javier Manquillo brought Newcastle level following the break, Ronaldo produced a trademark strike. He burst into the box as he collected a through ball from Luke Shaw before drilling it through the legs of Woodman. Bruno Fernandes made it 3-1 with a wonderful strike from 25 metres out and substitute Jesse Lingard completed the rout. Spurs see red Ronaldo was not the only celebrating debutant - Odsonne Edouard scored twice on his debut for Palace as 10-man Tottenham Hotspur fell to a 3-0 loss at Selhurst Park. Spurs centre back Japhet Tanganga was shown a second yellow card in the 58th minute for a foul on Jordan Ayew, five minutes after the defender was adjudged to have illegally blocked winger Wilfried Zaha. Matters got worse for the visitors as Palace were awarded a penalty when Ben Davies handled from a Conor Gallagher cross in the 75th minute, and Zaha dispatched the spot-kick past Hugo Lloris. Football: Ronaldo return puts Solskjaer on the clock at Man United

MANCHESTER, UNITED KINGDOM (AFP) - Cristiano Ronaldo's sensational return to Manchester United on Friday (Aug 27) capped a transfer window that has made fans quickly forget the disappointment on the field, and uprising off it, that ended last season. Just four months ago supporters stormed the Old Trafford pitch in protest at the club's owners for their part in the failed European Super League project and a perceived lack of investment in the club, forcing the postponement of a Premier League clash with Liverpool. In response, the Glazer family have sanctioned a transfer spend of nearly £150 million (S$280 million) with Ronaldo joining his former Real Madrid teammate Raphael Varane and Jadon Sancho. That investment has ramped up the pressure on United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to deliver the club's first Premier League title since Alex Ferguson retired as manager in 2013. Solskjaer is yet to win a trophy in his two-and-a-half years in charge with his mismanagement of losing the Europa League final on penalties to Villarreal in United's final game of last season still fresh in the memory. The Norwegian did not make a single substitution until 100 minutes had been played in Gdansk as United failed to make their far greater resources count. A lack of strength in depth is not an excuse Solskjaer will be able to use this season if he does not end United's wait for silverware. 'Greatest of all-time' Even at 36, Ronaldo is still one of the most prolific goalscorers in the game. The Portuguese netted 36 times for Juventus last season and won the Golden Boot at Euro 2020, scoring five goals in four games. "He is a legend of this club, he's the greatest player of all time if you ask me,"said Solskjaer of his former teammate. He and Sancho, who cost a reported £73 million from Borussia Dortmund in June, join a stacked forward line of Edinson Cavani, Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial and Mason Greenwood. Behind them Bruno Fernandes and Paul Pogba have already shone this season in a 5-1 thrashing of Leeds on the opening day of the Premier League season. But a 1-1 draw at Southampton on Sunday exposed some familiar failings of Solskjaer's reign that the recruitment of Ronaldo may solve. More on this topic   Related Story Football: Cristiano Ronaldo set to complete Man United return after day of high transfer drama   Related Story Football: United manager Solskjaer signs new three-year contract until 2024 The United manager can boast an impressive record against stronger opposition. He has beaten Pep Guardiola's Manchester City four times in eight meetings and lost only twice in six clashes with Liverpool. Twice he's won away to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League. But too often United have performed poorly in the games they are expected to win. Last season they finished 12 points behind City having dropped the same number of points against Crystal Palace and relegated Sheffield United, West Brom and Fulham. "That was the difference against Southampton, we weren't clinical, we didn't take our chances," added Solskjaer. "We had as many, or even more, chances (as against Leeds). If you're not ruthless in the box, you won't win points in the Premier League." If Ronaldo's predatory instincts turn those games into routine wins, the glory days of the Ferguson era could be back. According to reports, Ferguson played a part in convincing Ronaldo to return to the club where he made his name on the world stage between 2003 and 2009 rather than risking his United legacy by crossing the Manchester divide to join City. Teenage striker Mason Greenwood has scored in both his side's opening two league games of the season, but is likely to see his playing time curtailed by Ronaldo's return. "If other clubs can do things like this it is obviously not business for the future," said Liverpool manager Klopp on Friday on the race for Ronaldo's signature. "It is for now, immediately, that's how some clubs are working." Until now, Solskjaer has been given time to slowly rebuild United as a force in England and Europe. But with the resources afforded to him this summer comes responsibility and that means winning major trophies. Football: Kane to miss Tottenham’s Europa Conference League match amid transfer talk

LONDON (REUTERS) - Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane has not travelled with the team for Thursday's Europa Conference League playoff first leg against Pacos de Ferreira, British media reported on Wednesday (Aug 18). Kane had been originally named in the 25-man squad for the trip to Portugal by manager Nuno Espirito Santo but is now expected to stay back in London to work on his fitness. The England captain also missed Tottenham's win against Manchester City in their Premier League opener over the weekend after being unable to train due to self-isolation requirements. The 28-year-old has been a transfer target for Manchester City, with City boss Pep Guardiola saying that it was up to Tottenham to make the move happen. Kane told Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy at the end of last season that he wanted to leave the club in order to challenge for major trophies, according to media reports. OLD TRAFFORD (REUTERS) - Manchester United goalkeeper Dean Henderson will miss the club's training camp in Scotland due to the after-effects of contracting Covid-19, the Premier League side said on Monday (Aug 2). The 24-year-old is continuing to recover from prolonged fatigue as a result of testing positive for the coronavirus three weeks ago, the club said in a statement, adding that he is expected to return to training soon. Henderson made 26 appearances for United last season and was called up to England's European Championship squad in June, but was forced to withdraw with a hip injury. Football: Man United defender Telles to miss start of season

LONDON (REUTERS) - Manchester United defender Alex Telles is likely to be sidelined until September with an ankle injury and set to miss the start of the season, manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said on Tuesday (July 27). The Brazilian left back sustained the injury in pre-season training last week after he slipped and twisted his ankle and Solskjaer initially said he would be "out for a few weeks". "Unfortunately, it's worse news on Alex Telles than we hoped for, his ankle injury is a little bit more severe than we hoped and he'll be out for a little spell at least, the whole of August I would think," Solskjaer told the club's website. Telles, 28, was second choice to Luke Shaw last season and made 24 appearances across all competitions since joining the club from Porto in 2020. He could be unavailable for United's first three Premier League games, against Leeds United at home on Aug 14, at Southampton eight days later and Wolverhampton Wanderers away on Aug 29. Football: Man United in talks with Pogba over new contract, says Solskjaer

MANCHESTER, ENGLAND (REUTERS) - Manchester United are still in talks with midfielder Paul Pogba over a new contract, manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said, amid speculation over the Frenchman's future at the Premier League club. World Cup winner Pogba, 28, has frequently been linked with a move away from Old Trafford since rejoining United from Juventus in 2016 for a then-world record £89 million. British media reported that Ligue 1 club Paris St Germain are interested in signing Pogba, who is in the final year of his contract at United. "There's always speculation about Paul and always clubs being interested," Solskjaer said after Saturday's 4-2 pre-season defeat by Queens Park Rangers. "We've seen Paul at his best, Paul knows what we feel about it. "I've enjoyed my time working with him and hopefully we can continue working together. All that I've ever heard with Paul is he's looking forward to the season." Pogba made 42 appearances for United in all competitions last season as the club finished second in the league behind rivals Manchester City, while they also reached the Europa League final, losing to Villarreal. Earlier on Saturday, Solskjaer signed a new deal to stay at United until at least 2024, with an option for an extra year. Football: Lingard among six dropped by England from final Euro squad

(REUTERS) - England manager Gareth Southgate named four rightbacks in his final 26-man squad for the European championship on Tuesday (June 1) after dropping six players including in-form attacking midfielder Jesse Lingard. Others who failed to make the cut were defenders Ben Godfrey and Ben White, goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale, forward Ollie Watkins and midfielder James Ward-Prowse. Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood was withdrawn earlier due to an underlying injury to whittle the squad down from a provisional 33 named a week ago. Liverpool's Alexander-Arnold was one of the four rightbacks. Injured duo Harry Maguire and Jordan Henderson were both included. The FA said the dropped players would remain in the squad for two pre-tournament friendlies in Middlesbrough against Austria on Wednesday and Romania on Sunday. Teams competing in Euro 2020 can make unlimited replacements before their first match due to serious injury or illness. Fifteen of the 26 will be getting their first senior international tournament experience. The June 11-July 11 Euro 2020 is being held across Europe, with semi-finals and the final at London's Wembley Stadium as well as some group stage games. England's Euro 2020 Group D campaign starts with games against Croatia, Scotland and Czech Republic. Football: Man City crowned Premier League champions as Leicester win at Man United

MANCHESTER (AFP, REUTERS) - Caglar Soyuncu's second-half goal saw Leicester beat Manchester United 2-1 on Tuesday (May 11) in a result that confirmed Manchester City as Premier League champions and strengthened the Foxes' bid for a place in the Champions League. Luke Thomas put Leicester ahead in the 10th minute at Old Trafford but the visitors' lead lasted just five minutes, with Mason Greenwood equalising for United. But Turkish defender Soyuncu's 66th-minute header settled the match in Leicester's favour and eventually sparked title celebrations at United's local rivals. Defeat left second-placed United 10 points behind City, with only a maximum of nine available to the Red Devils from their three remaining league games this season. For Leicester, it meant the Midlands club leapfrogged Champions League finalists Chelsea into third place, although the Blues have a game in hand, with the top four at the end of the Premier League season guaranteed a place among Europe's elite next term. United manager Ole Gunnar Soskjaer, faced with a schedule of three games in five days, had promised to rotate his squad. And the Norwegian was as good as his word, making 10 changes to the side that beat Aston Villa 3-1. Greenwood was the only United player to retain his starting position, with Leicester recalling Ayoze Perez and Thomas. United defender Harry Maguire missed his first league since joining from Leicester in 2019 after suffering an ankle injury in Sunday's comeback win at Villa Park. As rain lashed down upon Old Trafford, it was the visitors who took a 10th-minute lead thanks to a superb finish from Thomas, who volleyed a centre from Youri Tielemans back across goal and into the top right-hand corner. United, however, have made a habit of coming from behind this season and it did not take them long to draw level. Diallo beat Thomas on the right and played the ball inside to Greenwood, whose own neat footwork then allowed him to shoot low past Kasper Schmeichel, the son of United goalkeeping great Peter. Leicester, however, regained the lead midway through the second half when Soyuncu jumped above Nemanja Matic and met Marc Albrighton's corner with a powerful header high into the net. PHOTO: AFP Pep Guardiola’s City side, who missed the chance to seal the title when they were beaten 2-1 by Chelsea on Saturday, are 10 points clear of United, who also have three games left. It is City’s third Premier League title in five seasons under Guardiola and their fifth in the last 10. Despite their home defeat by Chelsea at the weekend, City have enjoyed a magnificent turnaround this season after picking up 12 points from their first eight games – their worst start since 2008-09. Since then they have been head and shoulders above their rivals and since hitting the top have looked unstoppable. After losing at Tottenham Hotspur in November, they won 22 of their next 27 matches, including a 15-game winning run and a record-equalling 11 successive away league wins. Guardiola’s side, who were second-best to Liverpool last season, also won a fourth-straight League Cup and can claim a treble by beating Chelsea in this month’s Champions League final. Manchester United had delayed City’s title celebrations by beating Aston Villa away on Sunday but it was only putting off the inevitable and the party can now start in earnest. On the other side of Manchester a huge “Champions” banner was draped outside City’s Etihad Stadium. Football: Manchester United to punish fans who committed criminal acts in Glazer protests

MANCHESTER (REUTERS) - Manchester United will punish fans who committed criminal acts during the protests on Sunday which led to the Premier League game against Liverpool being postponed, the club said on Monday (May 3). United fans protesting against the club's American owners, the Glazer family, stormed into the stadium which was closed to fans due to Covid-19 restrictions. "The majority of our fans have and will condemn criminal damage, along with any violence towards club staff, police or other fans, and these now become a police matter," United said in a statement. "The club has no desire to see peaceful protestors punished, but will work with the police to identify those involved in criminal activity, and will also issue its own sanctions to any season ticket holder or member identified, per the published sanctions policy," the statement added. A flare was thrown at the broadcasters podium as fans ran on to the field and protesters clashed with police outside the ground. Greater Manchester Police (GMP) said six officers were injured during the demonstrations, with one suffering a fractured eye socket, and another sustained a wound to his face, following bottles and cans being thrown from the crowd. A third officer was dragged and kicked. GMP said a 28-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the protests and added that it was "reviewing all obtainable evidence" to identify the organisers of the demonstration and those responsible for assaulting officers. "The behaviour shown at this protest was absolutely atrocious," GMP Assistant Chief Constable Nick Bailey said in a statement. "Officers were just trying to do their job and facilitate a peaceful protest." Strong feeling The Premier League said it recognised the strength of feeling among fans. "We are committed to maintaining close dialogue with supporters and their representatives, as we work with The FA and government to identify solutions, but ask that all protests are peaceful," the Premier League said in a statement. "The actions of a few clubs cannot be allowed to create such division and disruption. We are determined to establish the truth of what happened and hold those clubs accountable for their decisions and actions." The fan protests against the Glazers, which have taken place since they bought the club in 2005, have been reignited since United's involvement in the attempt to create a breakaway European Super League. "I don't think it's a good idea to have disruptive behaviour, demonstrations of that kind, but on the other hand I do understand people's strength of feeling," Johnson told reporters. Greater Manchester mayor Andy Burnham also expressed support for the aims of the protesters. "I fully understand the long-standing concerns of Manchester United supporters about both the ownership and financing of their club and the wider running of football," he said. "It is important to make clear that the majority of supporters made their protest peacefully... however, there is no excuse for the actions of a minority who injured police officers and endangered the safety of others." No decision has yet been made on the rescheduling of the match or about any sanctions. "Information on the rescheduling of the game and any possible implication on other fixtures will be announced after discussion and agreement with the Premier League," United said.
