SINGAPORE - A man who was issued a medical certificate (MC) after he was diagnosed with acute upper respiratory tract infection in a clinic last December decided to skip his Covid-19 swab test and took a bus home. Instead of staying indoors the next day, Tan Fu Yu left his Ang Mo Kio flat and took a private-hire car to a Sin Ming Road tattoo studio to get his chest inked. Tan went for a polymerase chain reaction test for Covid-19 only on Sept 19 this year and tested negative for it. Court documents do not disclose why he took the test about nine months after receiving the MC last December. On Friday (Nov 26), the 20-year-old Singaporean pleaded guilty in a district court to leaving his home without a reasonable excuse despite being given a relevant MC . Deputy Public Prosecutor Jane Lim said that Tan went to Ang Mo Kio Polyclinic at around 3pm on Dec 8 last year to seek treatment for a dry cough and an itchy throat. A doctor later diagnosed him with an acute upper respiratory tract infection and told him to undergo a swab test for Covid-19. The doctor also issued Tan with an MC, excusing him from work or school for three days. The MC also stated that Tan was required by law to stay at home until his swab test showed a negative result. Tan acknowledged the doctor's explanation, collected his MC and left the consultation room. The DPP said: "Instead of going for his Covid-19 swab test and collecting his medications, the defendant left (the polyclinic) and returned to his residence by bus. "The nurse tried to contact the defendant at his mobile phone multiple times, but the calls were unanswered." The artist then noticed that Tan was bleeding excessively while getting his chest inked. After the session, Tan left the studio at around 3pm and took a bus home. On Friday, DPP Lim urged the court to give him to a short jail sentence, stressing that he had left his home for a "frivolous reason" - to get a tattoo done. Tan, who was unrepresented, pleaded for a second chance and added: "(There was) no excuse for whatever I did." He will be sentenced on Dec 9. For committing the offence, he can be jailed for up to six months and fined up to $10,000. More on this topic Related Story Courts & Crime: Read more stories
TURIN, ITALY (AFP) - Theo Hernandez shot France into a Nations League final with Spain on Thursday (Oct 7) with a last-gasp strike which earned Les Bleus a thrilling 3-2 win from two goals down against Belgium. AC Milan full-back Hernandez netted his first France goal in the 90th minute of his second international appearance after France had come back from 2-0 down at half-time at the Allianz Stadium in Turin through strikes from Karim Benzema and Kylian Mbappe. Didier Deschamps’ side will face La Roja in Sunday’s final at the San Siro in Milan after an exciting encounter which Belgium thought they had won in the final minutes when Romelu Lukaku netted from Yannick Carrasco’s cross. However with the Red Devils players still celebrating, Lukaku’s first-time finish was ruled out for offside. And with the match looking like it was heading to extra-time, Hernandez collected the ball on the left before rifling home the winner. He had started the match alongside his brother Lucas Hernandez, making the pair the first two brothers to play for France since Herve and Patrick Revelli featured in a friendly against Romania in 1974. “Winning that match from where we were proves the strength of character of this team,” Deschamps told TF1 after the match. “Nobody thought it possible at half-time, and I understand that looking at the score, but they were here to not leave anything on the pitch and to play in the final.” Mbappe shows class The match had been fairly even for most of the opening period, although Hugo Lloris had to be at his best to stop Kevin De Bruyne’s close range finish in the fourth minute. Three minutes later Benjamin Pavard should have done better when he met Mbappe’s cross from the left with a volley that he sent straight at Thibaut Courtois. Mbappe, who became the youngest ever player to earn 50 caps for France, also fired too close to Courtois midway through the first half. Belgium’s opening goal came eight minutes before the break, Carrasco cutting inside Pavard and then drilling a low shot between Lloris and his near post. And three minutes later Lukaku, who flopped in the same stadium last week in a Chelsea shirt, doubled Belgium’s lead with his sixth goal in six games for his country. The 28-year-old did brilliantly to spin Lucas Hernandez while collecting De Bruyne’s pass down the right flank before charging into the box and slamming home a high shot that again beat Lloris at his near post. Left with a tough task to make the final France came out firing after the restart, and Mbappe was the key to drawing them level. First he burned Carrasco in the 58th minute before sending in a low cross that Antoine Griezmann couldn’t turn in. Then, four minutes later, he tricked his way past Youri Tielemans and passed to Benzema, who flashed home despite being surrounded by Belgium defenders. He then crashed home the spot-kick which set up an exciting finish after Tielemans’ clumsy foul on Griezmann was spotted following a VAR check. De Bruyne and Paul Pogba then both had shots well saved before frantic finale saw Lukaku score what he thought was the decisive goal and Pogba smash a free-kick against the bar. Hernandez then snatched a win which highlighted all the qualities which made the French world champions. SAO PAULO (REUTERS) - Brazilian soccer legend Pele left a Sao Paulo hospital after several weeks on Thursday (Sept 30), and a hospital bulletin said he would undergo chemotherapy following the removal of a colon tumour. Pele had been hospitalised for nearly a month, checking in for routine exams before undergoing a Sept 4 operation to remove the tumour. He was in and out of the Albert Einstein Hospital's intensive care unit in the days after surgery, with social media posts from his family assuring fans he was recovering well. The hospital said in a Thursday bulletin that he was stable and cleared in the morning to leave the hospital, but would "continue with chemotherapy." Pele left the hospital early in the evening, according to a person familiar with the matter. The Santos, Brazil and New York Cosmos player will turn 81 on Oct 23. Pele is the only man to win three World Cups as a player. On Wednesday, his daughter Kely said that he was expected to be discharged. "Now that he's stronger and leaving the hospital to continue recovering and treating himself at home, I'm going back home," Pele's US-based daughter said on social media. SINGAPORE - A retiree who stabbed his former wife to death at a carpark at the Institute of Technical Education (ITE) College Central campus was sentenced to life imprisonment on Wednesday (Sept 22). Seet Cher Hng was convicted of a reduced murder charge last week, after he indicated that he would not be contesting the charge. The 69-year-old had been demanding money from ex-wife, Ms Low Hwee Geok, 56, before the incident. He believed the money was due to him after their divorce. The High Court heard that he had even engraved on a knife dates on which he believed he had caught her having an affair. The knife was one of three that he took along with him when he ambushed Ms Low at the Ang Mo Kio campus and confronted her inside her car at about 7.30pm on July 19, 2018. A struggle ensued and as she tried to get away from him, he stabbed her eight times. He then stabbed himself 13 times on his upper torso and collapsed on top of her. It was revealed in court that he told passersby "let me die, don't save me". A forensic pathologist said each of the three wounds to Ms Low's left upper chest, left mid-back and left lower back was sufficient to cause death. He was initially charged with murder under Section 300(a) of the Penal Code, which carries the mandatory death penalty. Last month, the prosecution amended the charge to murder by intentionally causing fatal injuries, under Section 300(c). This charge carries the death penalty or life imprisonment. Prosecutors said they were not objecting to a life sentence for Seet. At the time of the murder, Seet was retired from his job at ITE Headquarters and relying on monthly Central Provident Fund payouts. Ms Low was divisional director of the examinations division at ITE College Central. The couple married on April 7, 1993, and were divorced on June 13, 2011. They had a daughter together. The court heard that Seet, who is twice divorced, blamed Ms Low's alleged infidelity for their marriage ending and was unhappy with the division of their matrimonial assets. He believed he did not receive his fair share of the sales proceeds of a condominium unit in Corporation Road which the couple had jointly purchased while married. Between 2011 and 2018, he made numerous demands via e-mail to Ms Low for a sum varying from $200,000 to $500,000 as his share of the proceeds as well as "compensation" for the alleged infidelity. Some time before Chinese New Year in 2018, Seet left a letter on the windscreen of Ms Low's car, demanding $500,000 and threatening to start legal proceedings. Ms Low did not respond to his demands, and Seet became increasingly isolated and upset. Ms Low, 56, was pronounced dead by paramedics at the scene. He brought along a haversack that contained, among other things, three knives, a spanner and a note addressed to the police. He had one of the knives engraved with "010609" and "020609" on the blade as a reminder of the dates that he believed he caught Ms Low having an affair. He arrived at the carpark at about 4.40pm and waited for Ms Low. At about 7.30pm, when he saw Ms Low approaching her car, Seet got out of his vehicle and walked quickly towards her. As she got into her car, Seet entered through the front passenger side. Ms Low screamed loudly when she saw Seet, who then grabbed her arm to stop her from getting out of her car. She managed to break free after a brief struggle but fell as she stepped out of the car. Seet then ran towards her and stabbed her multiple times. A call was made to the police at about 7.45pm. Ms Low was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics. Seet was taken to hospital, where he underwent surgery for abdominal injuries and was placed in intensive care until July 25, 2018. WASHINGTON (AFP) - Brooks Koepka opted to take no chances with the Ryder Cup coming up, pulling out of the US PGA Tour Championship on Saturday (Sept 4) after hurting his left wrist hitting out of the rough. "Same wrist I had issues with back in '17, '18, so just making sure it's all good," said Koepka, who injured his left wrist when his club struck a tree root as he hit out of the rough on the way to a bogey at the 10th hole at East Lake in Atlanta. He parred two holes, but after failing to reach the green in three at the par-four 13th, departed the course. It's just the latest injury setback for the four-time major winner, who won the last of his Grand Slam titles in 2019. In recent years, he's battled injuries not only to his wrist but also to his left knee and hip. In March, he needed surgery after dislocating his right kneecap. That injury required surgery and caused him to miss build-up to the Masters, and Koepka's results since then have been spotty. He was 16 strokes off the pace when he left the course on Saturday, but indicated to Golf Channel he expected to be fit for the Ryder Cup, the USA versus Europe matchplay showdown scheduled to start at Whistling Straits in Wisconsin on Sept 24. PARIS (AFP) - Kylian Mbappe and Angel di Maria were both among the scorers as a Paris Saint-Germain side missing both Lionel Messi and Neymar won 4-2 away at Brest on Friday (Aug 20) to make it three wins out of three this season in Ligue 1. Ander Herrera and Idrissa Gana Gueye also found the net for the capital side as they moved ominously on to nine points from a possible nine and clear at the top of the fledgling French table with a second consecutive 4-2 victory. The full house of 15,000 in Brittany were denied the chance to see Messi make his PSG debut after the Argentine was left out of the squad as he continues to build up his fitness. Neymar, who like Messi returned to training late after going all the way to the final of the Copa America last month, was also left out but PSG once again showed that they have little trouble finding the net and winning without the two superstars. However, once again their defending left a lot to be desired and will have given coach Mauricio Pochettino food for thought with a number of players still waiting on the sidelines. Donnarumma on the bench Italy's Euro 2020 goalkeeping hero Gianluigi Donnarumma appeared in the squad for the first time since his arrival from AC Milan but was left on the bench as Keylor Navas started in goal. Donnarumma's fellow European champion, Marco Verratti, did play for the first time this season in midfield but skipper Marquinhos was still missing. Mbappe has dominated headlines in Paris ever since the arrival of Messi as speculation surrounds the future of the World Cup winner, who is out of contract at the end of the campaign and is a target for Real Madrid. However he set up a total of four goals in the opening league wins against promoted Troyes and against Strasbourg, and once again Mbappe played a central role in the rudimentary surroundings of the Stade Francis-Le Ble. PSG went ahead midway through the first half when Mbappe tried a clipped cross which was cleared out to the edge of the area where Herrera met the ball on the volley and the Spaniard's shot found the bottom corner. Mbappe made it 2-0 in the 36th minute, arriving to head in his first goal of the season after Georginio Wijnaldum's shot had been blocked. Brest got one back just before the break when Franck Honorat finished first-time after a fine back-heel lay-off by Romain Faivre. Yet Brest pulled another one back five minutes from time through Steve Mounie, with Faivre again providing the assist. PSG were actually in danger of conceding an equaliser until the 90th minute when, as Brest threw everyone forward, Di Maria broke downfield and played a one-two with Achraf Hakimi before scoring with a delightful lob. PARIS (REUTERS) - Lionel Messi will not be included in Paris St Germain's squad for Friday's Ligue 1 game at Brest, French daily L'Equipe reported, adding that his former Barcelona team mate Neymar has also been left out. L'Equipe added on its website that Italy's Euro 2020 winning goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma has been called up alongside compatriot Marco Verratti, Marquinhos and Angel Di Maria. Verratti was also part of Italy's squad which beat England in the Euro 2020 final on penalties at Wembley, while Di Maria scored Argentina's winner in a 1-0 victory over hosts Brazil in the Copa America showpiece. Earlier on Thursday (Aug 19), PSG manager Mauricio Pochettino had left open the possibility that Messi could feature against Brest when he declined to specify whether the six-times Ballon d'Or winner would finally make his debut. The 34-year-old Messi is yet to feature for the French giants after joining them from Barcelona earlier this month and he was presented to the fans ahead of PSG's 4-2 home win over Strasbourg on Saturday. "Everything is positive," Pochettino told a news conference at PSG's training camp. "There is a good atmosphere in the squad and (Messi) has settled in well and quickly. There is a very good feeling." Messi had not trained for a month after helping Argentina to their Copa America triumph. Having won 10 LaLiga and four Champions League titles during his 17-year career at Barcelona, Messi left them on a free transfer after the Catalan club's president Joan Laporta said they could no longer afford to keep him. Pochettino also suggested speculation that Kylian Mbappe might leave PSG in the current transfer window amounted to nothing, with the France World Cup winner a target for Real Madrid, according to media reports. BARCELONA (REUTERS) - Barcelona saw their hopes of winning La Liga extinguished as they were beaten 2-1 at home by Celta Vigo on Sunday (May 16). Barca were dominant in the first half and deservedly took the lead through Lionel Messi in the 27th minute, as the Argentine headed Sergio Busquet's precise cross past Ivan Villar to make it 30 league goals for the season. Celta equalised against the run of play 11 minutes later as Santi Mina fired in from the edge of the box following a pacey counter-attack. Defender Ronald Araujo went close with a header after the restart as Barca tried in vain to retake the lead. However, they found themselves up against it when Clement Lenglet was dismissed with six minutes to play. With just one minute of normal time left, Mina netted his second of the game to condemn the Catalans to at best a third-placed finish in Ronald Koeman's first season in charge. Barca are third on 76 points, four behind Real Madrid in second with one game remaining. MADRID (AFP) - Atletico Madrid forward Luis Suarez, the club's leading scorer this season, hurt his left leg in training on Wednesday (April 7), potentially dealing a critical blow to their La Liga title hopes. Suarez left Wednesday morning's training session after feeling discomfort, and tests later revealed the Uruguayan had suffered a muscle injury to his left leg, the club said. Atletico did not specify how long Suarez would be sidelined, but local reports suggested he could miss up to three weeks - ruling him out of games against Betis, Eibar, Huesca and Athletic Bilbao. Diego Simeone's side saw their lead in Spain trimmed to a single point by Barcelona on Monday, following a drastic dip in form over the past two months. The 34-year-old Suarez has scored 19 goals in the league this season, second in La Liga only to former Barcelona team-mate Lionel Messi (23). Atletico are also still without Moussa Dembele who fainted who during a training session last month. The French striker has made just four substitute appearances since joining on loan from Lyon in January.
SINGAPORE - A 51-year-old woman was on Friday (Feb 26) convicted of two counts of abusing her maid, in attacks which left the Myanmar national with bruises and the loss of hearing in her left ear. Both incidents occurred in 2017 at Gayathri Iyer's home at the Pebble Bay condominium in Tanjong Rhu Road. District Judge Tan Jen Tse convicted the Singaporean of two maid abuse charges after a trial. She was, however, acquitted of two other counts of maid abuse as the judge found that the maid's evidence in these instances had not been "unusually convincing". Gayathri is represented by lawyer Amarjit Singh Sidhu and her bail was set at $15,000. She will be sentenced on March 17. SINGAPORE - A youth who left a policeman with a spinal cord injury and superficial bite wounds was on Tuesday (Jan 5) sentenced to two years' probation. As part of his probation, the 17-year-old drug offender has to remain indoors from 10pm to 6am every day and perform 80 hours of community service. He also has to undergo regular urine tests. The teenager cannot be named as those under 18 are covered under the Children and Young Persons Act. The offender had pleaded guilty in a district court on Nov 19 last year to one count each of causing grievous hurt to a public servant and methamphetamine consumption. The victim - a full-time national serviceman (NSF) - and his colleague were conducting foot patrol at Block 90 Redhill Close at around 2pm on Aug 5 last year when they entered a lift on the seventh storey, which was occupied by the offender and his cousin. Deputy Public Prosecutor Tan Hsiao Tien had disclosed in earlier proceedings that the officers decided to search the occupants when they noticed the two appeared nervous and had bloodshot eyes. A small brown box the cousin was holding was found to contain drug-taking utensils. When they arrived at the ground floor of the block, the victim's colleague searched the offender's cousin. It was at this point that the offender put up a violent struggle. DPP Tan told the court: "The victim, who was standing beside the accused, managed to grab the accused from the back and pinned him down on the floor. "A struggle ensued... The victim instructed the accused to stop struggling, but he did not comply and again attempted to run away. "The victim managed to pull the accused back down. During the struggle, the accused managed to slip one of his hands out from the handcuff. "The accused also bit the victim on his left arm and left chest in an attempt to escape custody." Police back-up arrived soon after and the attacker was arrested. The offender was referred to the Central Narcotics Bureau and his urine samples were found to contain traces of methamphetamine, commonly known as Ice. SEVILLE, SPAIN (AFP) - Olivier Giroud scored four goals as Chelsea romped to an impressive 4-0 victory at Sevilla on Wednesday (Dec 2) to secure top spot in Champions League Group E. The 34-year-old striker is the oldest player to score a hat-trick in the competition since Hungarian great Ferenc Puskas in 1965 for Real Madrid against Feyenoord. He is also the first player to net four times in a Champions League match since Cristiano Ronaldo against Malmo five years ago. Both teams were already qualified for the last 16 before kick-off, but Giroud made the most of a rare start, scoring with his left foot, his right foot and his head to see Chelsea through as group winners, also slotting in a penalty. The France international sent out a message to his manager Frank Lampard, with Timo Werner and Tammy Abraham seemingly above him in the pecking order, by making the absolute most of only his second start of the season. Lampard will now be able to rest players for the final group game against Krasnodar at Stamford Bridge, with his side looking to improve on last season's run to the last 16, where they were well beaten by eventual winners Bayern Munich. Giroud wasted little time in putting Chelsea ahead, collecting Kai Havertz's clever pass before cutting inside and bending a fine finish into the far corner in the eighth minute. Sevilla were left frustrated as they saw two penalty appeals for handball turned down. In the 20th minute, claims that Christian Pulisic handled were waved away by referee Artur Soares Dias after he checked the pitchside monitor. The hosts had another penalty shout turned down following a lengthy VAR delay after an Ivan Rakitic free-kick struck the Chelsea wall. Aside from those nervy moments, Lampard's Blues were the more threatening, with Antonio Rudiger seeing a header cleared off the line before Alfonso Pastor kept out Pulisic's low drive. The home side started the second half brightly, as Jesus Navas picked out Nemanja Gudelj with a clever pass, but the Serbian international fired narrowly over. Chelsea doubled their advantage in the 54th minute, though, as Giroud boosted his case for more game time further by latching onto Mateo Kovacic's pass and clipping the ball over the Sevilla goalkeeper. But he was not finished there, completing his first Champions League hat-trick since a treble against Olympiakos for Arsenal in 2015 with a looping header from N'Golo Kante's cross. Giroud rounded off a virtuoso display from the spot with seven minutes to play, scoring a spot-kick he had won himself.
WOLVERHAMPTON (Reuters) - Newcastle United's Jacob Murphy struck a clever free kick in the 89th minute to snatch a 1-1 draw at Wolverhampton Wanderers in a hard-fought Premier League encounter on Sunday (Oct 25). Raul Jimenez had given Wolves the lead 10 minutes from time with a thunderous dipping shot from the edge of the area before Murphy left goalkeeper Rui Patricio stranded to equalise. Daniel Podence set the tone for the home side early on, creating a couple of chances in the opening 10 minutes and Wolves went on to dominate possession throughout the game. With Newcastle centre-forward Callum Wilson left isolated, the visitors struggled to hold on to the ball and mount decent attacks while Wolves frequently won possession back quickly and began building attacks with their short-passing game. Pedro Neto and Jimenez had decent chances in the second half but Newcastle's rearguard stood firm, denying the visitors space in front of goal and packing their penalty are to block shots. After a frustrating afternoon of struggling to break down Newcastle's defence, Jimenez finally put Wolves in front when he met a half-cleared free kick with a fine strike. The hosts looked set for the win until Conor Coady fouled Wilson and Murphy caught out Patricio by curling the free kick around the wall and into the net at the near post. Wolves manager Nuno Espirito Santo, a former keeper, told Sky Sports: "I have to see, but the ball cannot go on that side of the wall... if it goes over the wall then we have to deal (with it), but on the side of the wall... it cannot go in". With Arsenal set to welcome on Leicester City later on Sunday, the draw left Wolves in seventh place on 10 points, with Newcastle 14th on eight after six games. SINGAPORE - A lawyer who left Singapore after more than $33 million parked at his firm went missing has been issued with 19 new charges. Jeffrey Ong Su Aun was charged on Tuesday (Oct 20) with 14 counts of criminal breach of trust as an attorney involving more than $17.4 million, as well as five counts of cheating. In a statement, police said that the 43-year-old Singaporean now faces 76 charges in all. In total, Ong is implicated in a case involving more than $75 million. This is a greater sum than the $50 million in church funds that six City Harvest church leaders were found guilty of misusing in 2015. Ong was the managing partner of law firm JLC Advisors when more than $33 million held in escrow in the firm for a client, Allied Technologies, went missing. Escrow is an essential service in capital markets that supports transactions such as mergers and acquisitions. His latest charges regarding criminal breach of trust as an attorney involve more than $17.4 million that was held in escrow by JLC Advisors for the firm CW Group Holdings, which is listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange. He is accused of misappropriating the monies in 2015 and 2016, and is said to have largely engaged in a conspiracy with one Wong Koon Lup, whose details were not revealed in court documents. Ong and Wong are also said to have engaged in a conspiracy to cheat, between 2016 and 2018. Police said in their statement: "The five counts of conspiracy to cheat were aimed at concealing the misappropriation of funds from CW Group's board of directors as well as the auditor of CW Group's subsidiaries in Singapore, Ernst and Young Solutions." Ong, who appeared in court via video-link on Tuesday, was not offered bail. His case has been adjourned to Nov 25. He first made the headlines last year after the monies went missing and he subsequently disappeared.
