DENSO Develops Global Safety Package 3 to Improve Vehicle Sensing

KARIYA, JAPAN, Jan 14, 2022 - (JCN Newswire via SEAPRWire.com) - DENSO, a leading mobility supplier, today announced that it has developed Global Safety Package 3(1), an active safety system designed to improve the safety of vehicles by giving them high sensing capability of their surroundings. This product is used in the Hino Ranger, the Lexus NX, and the Toyota Noah and Voxy, which were released in August 2021, October 2021, and January 2022, respectively. The Global Safety Package uses the combined performance of a millimeter-wave radar sensor and vision sensor to assist the driver in controlling the vehicle safely. The millimeter-wave radar sensor detects the shapes of road objects, such as vehicles and guardrails, while the vision sensor uses a camera to detect the environment ahead of the vehicle. DENSO has developed the third generation of the Global Safety Package. In order to eliminate road accidents and achieve stress-free mobility, DENSO believes it is important to not only improve safety products in vehicles using cutting-edge technology, but also develop those products at attractive prices so they can benefit more vehicles. Under this philosophy, DENSO developed Global Safety Package 3 to improve its active safety and driver assistance performance while reducing product size and cost.Millimeter-wave radar sensorProduct featuresWith a wider detection angle, longer detection range, and improved speed resolution(2), this product helps avoid collisions at intersections, whether with other vehicles or pedestrians. Moreover, thanks to its improved detection capability and reduced size and cost, this radar sensor has fewer installation requirements and can be used in more vehicle types and models.Points of product improvementA wider detection angle and a longer detection range with improvements such as in-antenna design and radio wave transmission efficiency.Improved speed resolution by increasing the frequency modulation of radio wave transmissions.Reduced size and cost, with the new model using fewer than half the number of parts compared to the previous generation. DENSO achieved this by integrating the antenna and power supply board, simplifying product structure and leveraging multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO) technology, which allows for a smaller antenna with fewer channels to transmit and receive radio waves.Vision sensorProduct featuresThe sensor has a wider horizontal field of view to help with collision avoidance at intersections, as well as a longer range to detect road objects in front of the vehicle. This assists adaptive cruise control and lane changes over a broader speed range. Moreover, the product uses artificial intelligence (AI) to improve sensing performance and assistance functions, such as headway distance control - the ability to maintain consistent distance between a preceding vehicle - and traffic sign recognition.Points of product development- A high-sensitivity, high-resolution imager with a wider horizontal field of view and longer detection range.- AI technology to identify drivable areas, preceding vehicles, road signs, and other solid objects based on image data. Vehicles and pedestrians in all directions, including those ahead, behind, and to the side, can be detected.- Reduced product size and cost by taking the following actions: integrating image processing and system control functions, which reduced the number of microcomputers used; adjusted the structural design to control heat emitted from the processor; and reviewed the lens design.DENSO will continue to develop technology for advanced driver assistance to realize safe and flexible mobility for all people, including drivers and pedestrians, around the world.(1) Global Safety Package 3The software for Global Safety Package 3 was developed in cooperation with J-QuAD DYNAMICS Inc.(2) Speed resolutionThe difference in speed between two targets by which the sensor can distinguish them as two separate objects when it detects them Copyright 2022 JCN Newswire. ‘Hungary Ghost Festival’: Volunteers step up to prevent translation gaffes, improve accuracy

SINGAPORE - Hungry Ghost Festival was mistranslated as "Hungary Ghost Festival" in a 2002 Singapore Tourism Board guide. This translation gaffe has stuck in Mr Neo Keng Hwee's mind, so he was quick to respond to a nationwide effort to crowdsource expertise to prevent such errors. Following the launch of the Citizen Translators project in January, Mr Neo has given feedback on errors he has spotted in brochures. Nearly 800 volunteers have registered for the Citizen Translators project so far, said Minister of State for Communications and Information Tan Kiat How at a virtual dialogue for these participants on Wednesday (Nov 10). Under the initiative, citizen translators help identify translation-related errors in government communication materials in Singapore's four official languages. They can also review translated materials by government agencies. These include content from the TraceTogether token collection website and promotional materials by the People's Association, for instance. "Errors in translation are often made because the Chinese language has many homonyms (words that sound similar but have different meanings)," Mr Neo, 39, a Ngee Ann Polytechnic lecturer in Chinese studies, told The Straits Times. At the dialogue with Mr Tan, who chairs the National Translation Committee that runs the project, Mr Neo suggested that the Government partner with polytechnics offering translation courses. "This will help nurture the younger generation of students... and expose them to various genres of materials, so they can make an impact on the overall translation quality in Singapore," said the educator, who has taught Chinese for about 10 years. For another citizen translator, Ms Sharmelee Selvaraji, the need for accurately translated materials hit home when the pandemic worsened in Singapore. In April last year, the PhD student studying neuroscience at the National University of Singapore joined an informal chat group to translate Covid-19-related information to Tamil. "People from the private and public sectors were messaging us for help to translate materials literally every day," said Ms Sharmelee, 26. These translations were very important because some of them were used to inform migrant workers about the Covid-19 symptoms that they needed to report, she added.  When the Ministry of Communications and Information sent her an e-mail on the project in April last year, she instantly signed up. She has since been involved in its workshops and feedback exercises. Meanwhile, freelance translator Nur-El-Hudaa Jaffar hopes that her participation can help improve the translation of government communication to Malay. The 51-year-old editorial consultant said: "Some of these translations seem like they are direct translations and can definitely afford to be friendlier." Football: We didn’t deserve to win, says Arteta as Arsenal misfire again

BRIGHTON, ENGLAND (REUTERS) - Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta said his side did not deserve to win following a toothless attacking display in a 0-0 draw away to Brighton & Hove Albion on Saturday (Oct 2), but the Spaniard took some comfort from a solid defensive performance. After a thrilling 3-1 win over bitter rivals Tottenham Hotspur last week, Arsenal were brought back to earth with a bump as Graham Potter's side mesmerised them at times with the kind of free-flowing football Arteta would dearly love to see from his team. Brighton had a total of 21 attempts, but only two of them were on target as Arsenal defended doggedly, and although Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang hit a post with a first-half header, their blunt performance in possession is a cause for concern. "(The header) was probably the only open situation in the first half, and we were unlucky not to score it. I don't think we deserved to win the game, we have to take the draw with the performance we had today and improve," Arteta told the BBC. The Gunners improved after the break and had a decent 10-minute spell late in the game, but other than that they looked lost as they sought to create chances of their own. "We didn't make enough right decisions, every time there was a duel where we could escape pressure and attack open spaces we came up short and against this structure we had to do better," Arteta said. His defenders did well to keep up with Brighton's fluid, intelligent attacking football, and although they came under pressure at set pieces, they often managed to get blocks in or force their hosts to shoot from distance. "We have conceded one goal in the last five games which is really positive ... we can now focus on the things we are doing well and work on the ones we need to improve," Arteta said. New recommendations to improve well-being of pre-school educators

SINGAPORE - Pre-schools here have been encouraged to provide ergonomic furniture to improve the posture of their staff, adopt technology to ease their administrative workload, and consider vocal training courses for them to avoid strained voices in open concept classrooms. These are among new recommendations and initiatives that aim to improve the well-being, job satisfaction and productivity of pre-school educators. The Early Childhood Development Agency (ECDA), Health Promotion Board and Workplace Safety and Health Council began an occupational health and safety assessment for the sector two years ago. The recommendations were announced on Wednesday (Sept 1) by Minister for Social and Family Development Masagos Zulkifli during a Teachers' Day virtual visit to NTUC First Campus' My First Skool @ Yung An. The assessment evaluated the work roles and environments of pre-school staff and identified factors that impact their well-being. Ten centres and more than 280 staff participated in the study, ECDA said in a statement. One finding was that educators typically have inadequate lumbar support and encounter pressure on their knees from working with child-sized furniture and engaging infants and toddlers on the floor or during outdoor activities. They could also be in awkward postures during routine care such as showering and diapering. ECDA said most staff had indicated they were happy with their workplace and relationships and their rapport with colleagues and supervisors, though more than half reported that they faced significant stress levels. The recommendations were in four key areas - enhancing workplace health and safety capabilities; building and designing a more staff-friendly workplace; facilitating the use of technology to improve work processes; and promoting the physical and mental well-being of staff. Some initiatives were announced to help pre-schools improve in these areas. For example, the Association of Early Childhood and Training Services has a list of ergonomic furniture, equipment and vendors for the sector at discounted rates. ECDA will also be providing funding to pre-school operators to encourage them to adopt digital tools. More details will be announced later this year. The 10 pre-schools in the study have begun implementing solutions and adopting workplace health programmes to improve the well-being of their educators. It also allocates two hours of non-contact time per week for lesson planning and ensures that every centre is equipped with a Teacher Resource Room conducive for staff to rest or prepare for their lessons. Mr Masagos said: "We recognise the importance of our educators' well-being. Even as they look out for our children's welfare and development, we too want to ensure that their needs at the workplace are being met because we care for them." He added: "I encourage more pre-schools to adopt the recommendations and to tap on the range of support available."

Football: Defiant Koeman insists he will stay at Barca to improve squad

EIBAR (REUTERS) - Barcelona coach Ronald Koeman said he did not believe that Saturday's (May 22) 1-0 victory over Eibar would be his last game in charge of the club, adding that he wanted to build a better squad more befitting of it. Koeman, who was appointed by former club president Josep Bartomeu last summer, led his side to the Copa del Rey crown this season, but finished a disappointing third in La Liga and was eliminated in the last 16 of the Champions League. In recent weeks, local media speculation has intensified regarding his future, with new president Joan Laporta saying changes were imminent earlier this week and former midfielder Xavi Hernandez linked to the position. The Dutchman, however, said he didn't believe it would be his final act as coach. "I don't think this will be my last game. I've got a contract and I don't know any more than that," he told a news conference. "You (the media) speak a lot about the subject, but I'm relaxed on it. If the club wants to change anything, they need to tell me about it." Koeman also said that he did not currently have the kind of squad he wanted in order to make Barca competitive again. "When we took over here, it was a squad that had been assembled and we only signed Sergino Dest. "For me, this squad isn't to the level that we want to have at Barca. That's clear, and a lot of people in the club think that way, too. "We're trying to improve the squad and with all due respect, there's some senior players here who haven't performed. There's a lot of youngsters, too. "The squad isn't the finished article and you can't make change in just one season." Messi-Ronaldo clash to fire up European tie

BARCELONA • Lionel Messi's rivalry with Cristiano Ronaldo has enthralled football for the better part of a decade, and the pair will duel for the first time in the group stage when Barcelona host Juventus in the Champions League today. Both teams have already qualified for the last 16 so the clash will simply decide which team claims top spot in Group G. With the hosts leading by three points and a superior goal difference, Barca are almost guaranteed to emerge as group winners unless Juve score at least three goals and win by a margin that overturns their 2-0 defeat in the reverse fixture in October. The game, however, will not just be a dead rubber for Ronald Koeman's men. With four defeats this season, Barca are floundering in La Liga, and the team are in search of a confidence booster at the Nou Camp. At his virtual pre-match press conference yesterday, the Barca coach said: "Our objective is to play well and win each game. We won 2-0 away at their ground and took all three points, so for that reason, we have a great chance of finishing first in the group." "We are missing important players. We will have to look to do the best we can, both technically and tactically, as well as being fresh. Against Juventus, we will put out a strong side because we want to finish first in the group." Winger Ousmane Dembele, who picked up a hamstring injury in their defeat by Cadiz over the weekend, has been ruled out while Gerard Pique and Ansu Fati remain out for the long term. However, the worsening injury situation is not an excuse for a sequence of costly defensive howlers in their past three away league games, Koeman insisted. The Dutchman, who remains under pressure after an underwhelming start since being appointed in August, added: "You always have to analyse defeats. You have to look at how they are scoring and our effectiveness out there on the field. If I lose, I am angry. "I think being at Barca, we can't accept some of the goals that we have conceded in certain games. "The players know we have to improve certain things. We want to find a balance between performance, effectiveness and not making so many mistakes at the back." HIGH STANDARDS EXPECTED I think being at Barca, we can't accept some of the goals that we have conceded in certain games. The players know we have to improve certain things. RONALD KOEMAN, Barcelona coach, who is angry with their recent performances in La Liga. On facing Ronaldo, who missed the game in Turin due to a positive Covid-19 test, he said: "For us, it's not a motivating factor (to face him). "They (Juve) are a big team and there are two big teams fighting to be top of the group. "Cristiano is one of the best, he always battles and always scores. He is still at the top due to him working hard every day. "It's great (Barca captain) Messi and Cristiano are at the top level... They are both players to admire." Football: Be like Bayern Munich, Frank Lampard tells Chelsea’s young guns

LONDON • Chelsea manager Frank Lampard believes reigning European champions Bayern Munich are a benchmark for his young players as they target improvements on all fronts ahead of their Champions League opener against Sevilla. Bayern thrashed the Blues 7-1 on aggregate in the last 16 last season before lifting the trophy for the sixth time in August. The Blues are obviously not at that level yet, and are still working out the kinks following their £220 million (S$388 million) splurge in the transfer market, which has yet to pay dividends. However, Lampard has urged his team to use Bayern as the yardstick, insisting there is plenty of untapped potential in his side despite their topsy-turvy form in the Premier League. "It is a great platform to learn because you're playing against the best, and we played against the best in Bayern Munich," Lampard said at his pre-match virtual press conference ahead of today's Group E tie at Stamford Bridge. "We were a young team last year, working a lot to improve, and the Bayern game was a great marker for the young players in the squad to realise the levels that need to be attained. I remember having that myself as a young player. "Of the players we have brought in, some have more Champions League experience than others." Chelsea have added Champions League experience to the squad in the close season with the arrival of defender Thiago Silva and forwards Kai Havertz, Timo Werner and Hakim Ziyech. Three of them have reached at least the last-four stage in the past two seasons and most pundits expect Chelsea and Sevilla to be fighting it out for the top two spots, given that the other teams are debutants Krasnodar of Russia and France's Rennes. However, Lampard is refusing to take their expected progress to the knockout stage for granted, especially as glaring errors have pockmarked their start to the season. "I mentioned before about concentration, focus and discipline and that becomes even more important here than other competitions because of the level of Champions League," he added. "That's what I would always make very clear to the players going into a match against someone of the quality of Sevilla." Likewise, Blues captain Cesar Azpilicueta also urged his attacking teammates to pitch in as defending is a "collective" effort. Claiming it would not be possible to outscore their opponents in every game, the Spain right-back said: "When you are weak defensively, sometimes we feel like we have to score three or four goals every game, which sometimes you cannot do, it's a reality. "When we don't score, as a defender, I think how can we put our attacking players in a better situation. Collectively, we have to improve so we all defend together, it doesn't matter our position... at the moment, we have to improve that." However, with first-choice goalkeeper Edouard Mendy out injured, Lampard must choose between error-prone Kepa Arrizabalaga or 39-year-old backup Willy Caballero for the Europa League winners' visit, with neither player inspiring any sort of confidence as the last line of defence.
