Honda to Begin Battery Sharing Service for Electric Tricycle Taxis in India in the First Half of 2022

TOKYO, Oct 29, 2021 - (JCN Newswire via SEAPRWire.com) - Honda Motor Co., Ltd. today announced plans to begin a battery sharing service for electric tricycle taxis (so-called "rickshaws") in India, in the first half of 2022, using the Honda Mobile Power Pack e: ("MPP e:"), Honda's all-new portable and swappable batteries.Honda Mobile Power Pack Exchanger e: (planned mass-production model) and an electric rickshawIn India, as the economy continues to grow, energy demand is increasing and air pollution is worsening. To address these issues, country-wide efforts are being made to expand utilization of renewable energy and to actively pursue electrification of the transportation sector, which accounts for approximately 20% of the nation's greenhouse gas emissions. There are more than 8 million units of auto rickshaws in India, and they have been an essential means of daily transportation for people. In urban areas, these rickshaws are powered mainly by CNG (compressed natural gas) and have been a key challenge for electrification. Electrified mobility products currently available in the market are facing three issues: short range, long charging time and high cost of batteries. In order to contribute to India's effort to accelerate electrification and expand the use of renewable energy, Honda will work to eliminate these three issues through the use of swappable batteries and by sharing such batteries. To this end, Honda will start a battery sharing service for electric rickshaws, using MPP e: in the first half of 2022. In consideration of this new business, Honda began demonstration testing in India in February 2021, with 30 units of electric rickshaw taxis driven for a total of more than 200,000 km in operation. Through this testing, Honda identified issues to be addressed and verified business viability. Honda's battery sharing service will enable rickshaw drivers to stop by at the nearest battery swapping stations being set up in the city and swap a MPP e: with a low remaining charge for a fully-charged MPP e:. The use of this service will significantly reduce driver concern about running out of batteries as well as the risk of losing business opportunities with customers while waiting for rickshaw batteries to be charged. To begin this service, Honda will establish a local subsidiary in India to conduct a battery sharing service business. The subsidiary will install a number of Honda Mobile Power Pack Exchanger e: as battery swapping stations and conduct battery sharing service in the city. Honda will work with electric rickshaw manufacturers and begin the service in selected cities first and then expand to other areas in stages. Comments by Minoru Kato, Chief Officer, Life Creation Operations, Honda Motor Co., Ltd."Honda Mobile Power Pack (MPP) has huge potential to electrify all kinds of devices including small-sized mobility products and expand the use of renewable energy. By offering a battery sharing service in India, Honda will contribute to the accelerated electrification of rickshaws and expanded use of renewable energy. Moreover, Honda will continue serving people worldwide with the joy of expanding their life's potential by further expanding the utilization of the MPP into broader areas."About Honda Mobile Power Pack e: Honda Mobile Power Pack e: (MPP e:) is a portable and swappable lithium-ion battery capable of storing a large amount of electricity, more than 1.3kWh, which is an increase from the previous version of the MPP. The MPP e: also features body and handle designs reflecting the thorough pursuit of user friendliness and excellence in handling by incorporating user feedback Honda obtained through demonstration testing. Honda Introduces Initiatives in New Areas

TOKYO, Oct 1, 2021 - (JCN Newswire via SEAPRWire.com) - Honda Motor Co., Ltd. today introduced the technology development direction the company is currently pursuing for the challenges Honda is taking on in new areas while leveraging its core technologies. This direction leads to the fulfillment of Honda's 2030 Vision of serving people worldwide with the "joy of expanding their life's potential."Honda eVTOLHonda eVTOL which leveraged Honda's core technologiesChallenges Honda takes on in new areas leveraging its core technologiesWhile solidifying its existing businesses as the foundation of the company, Honda is thoroughly committed to contributing to the realization of a society with zero environmental impact and zero traffic collisions and also to new initiatives that enable Honda to take on challenges in new areas. In addition to research on advanced environmental and safety technologies, Honda R&D Co., Ltd., which takes a lead role in Honda's technology research and development, is pursuing outside-the-box research on technologies that will bring about new value for people by expanding the potential of mobility into the 3rd dimension, then the 4th dimension which defies the constraints of time and space, and ultimately into outer space. These new initiatives are made possible by core technologies Honda has amassed to date, including technologies in the areas of combustion, electrification, control and robotics. Through the comprehensive utilization of such technological strengths, Honda will strive to realize the joy of expanding people's life's potential in new areas in addition to existing business areas. These new areas include an electric vertical take-off and landing aircraft, avatar robot with a goal to expand the range of human ability and a new challenge in the field of outer space.1. Honda eVTOL (electric vertical take-off and landing) aircraft: will make mobility in he skies more accessible for people- Honda eVTOL leverages Honda's electrification technologies for its gas turbine hybrid power unit.- Adoption of the hybrid power unit enables the extension of range, which will enable Honda eVTOL to provide inter-city (city-to-city) transportation, where the market size is expected to grow in the future.- Honda will create a new "mobility ecosystem" featuring Honda eVTOL at its core, connected with mobility products on the ground. To make the mobility in the skies Honda realized with its original HondaJet even more accessible for more people, Honda is developing its eVTOL (electric Vertical Take-off and Landing) aircraft by taking advantage of a wide range of Honda's core technologies. In addition to clean operation realized by electrification technologies, eVTOL features safety at a level equivalent to that of commercial passenger airplanes realized by its simple structure and decentralized propulsive system and quietness due to relatively small diameter of rotors. This makes it possible for eVTOL to take off and land in the middle of a city without causing noise issues. Because of such features, the development race for eVTOL aircraft is getting increasingly vigorous. However, all-electric eVTOL aircraft face a range issue due to limited battery capacity, therefore the realistic use area is limited to intra-city (inside city) transportation. To address this issue and realize user-friendly inter-city transportation with longer range, Honda will leverage its electrification technologies and develop Honda eVTOL equipped with a gas turbine hybrid power unit. Moreover, in addition to electrification technologies, Honda eVTOL will feature technologies Honda has amassed in a number of different areas such as combustion, aerodynamics and control technologies.Honda will strive to create new value for people by establishing a "mobility ecosystem" featuring eVTOL aircraft at its core, coordinated and integrated with mobility on the ground. Since it began, IGNITION has received many applications with new business ideas, and several proposals that have a high degree of compatibility with Honda business are already being pursued at Honda with an eye toward commercialization. Ideas that pass the final evaluation process will be commercialized within Honda or by establishing a business startup company. In principle, the decision on commercialization will be made within a 6-month period, during which a taskforce team consists of internal specialists to be formed to support each proposer. The venture capital firm will provide advice and support to each proposer throughout the evaluation process. In order to ensure independence of the startup, the ratio of capital contribution by Honda will be limited to no more than 20%.Comment by Yasuhide Mizuno, IGNITION Chief Juror / Managing Officer of Honda Motor Co., Ltd.:"At Honda, there are many associates who have a passionate desire to help people and contribute to society using their original technologies and ideas. Having made great steps forward with every race in 2020, there is only one aim for this season: the top!A partnership with strength in depthThe trust and deeply cooperative working relationship that has developed over the years has seen Motul contribute to the performance, reliability and efficiency of HRC's competition models over all terrains including circuits, off-road and desert. The strength of this partnership has resulted in multiple victories in many different championships, most notably three wins for HRC at the Dakar Rally - the first being in 1989 and the most recent being this year, 2021. It has also led to several championship titles with Team HRC in MXGP including 2019 and 2020 in the hands of their super-dominant star rider Tim Gajser.Smoothing the way with MotulTogether with Motul, Team HRC has been continuing development of the CBR1000RR-RR FIREBLADE, with continual feedback to engineers in Japan. Among Motul's international R & D centers is one in Japan whose engineers collaborate with HRC's engine development department on a range of different projects including the development of high-tech synthetic lubricants. Principal among these is the tailor-made Motul 300V Factory Line Racing Kit Oil 2376H 0W-30 fully synthetic engine oil which will be used alongside the Motocool Factory Line and MC CARE range of products. The viscosity grade 0W-30, 100% synthetic lubricant yields a low traction coefficient thanks to the EsterCore technology, generating a friction reduction and therefore providing a significant gain in engine power.Nicolas Zaugg, Motul Chief Value Officer: "We are delighted to be extending our great working relationship with Honda and HRC to WorldSBK. The collaborative vision and technological partnership we have developed together is the perfect example of Motul's living laboratory philosophy-developing and testing experimental products in a racing application before offering them for sale to a wider customer base. It's a win-win deal as far as we are concerned."Tetsuhiro Kuwata, HRC Director - General Manager Race Operations Management Division: "We are pleased to announce Motul as Official Sponsor of our factory Team HRC in the highly competitive 2021 FIM Motul Superbike World Championship, thereby extending the relationship between our brands and further strengthening what is a very important project for us, with our CBR1000RR-R FIREBLADE SP. Honda and Motul each boast a long and successful history in high-level motorsport competition around the world, both brands being driven by the constant pursuit of victory and by the strong belief that the racing arena is the ideal setting in which to grow our human capital and develop our know-how and technology.
