TOKYO, Jun 29, 2022 - (ACN Newswire via SEAPRWire.com) - On June 29, 2022, Showa Denko K.K. (SDK) (TOKYO: 4004) and SK Incorporated concluded a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to give consideration to a plan to start cooperative work to produce high-purity gases, which are used in semiconductor production processes, in North America. While semiconductor markets in various countries continue growing and geopolitical risks are increasing, the US Government has embarked on strengthening domestic semiconductor industry and inviting supply chain of semiconductors into the country. As a result of this movement, large manufacturers of semiconductors are increasing their capital investment in the United States, and the demand for materials for semiconductors in the country is growing. Supply-demand balance of high-purity gases for wiring process (front-end of semiconductor production process) in the US has been tightening. Therefore, many semiconductor manufacturers in the US want to secure stable supply of high-purity gases for semiconductors. On the other hand, SDK's business segment to produce high purity gases for semiconductors has established and continues strengthening high-purity gas supply chain in which the Company producing high-purity gases and filling it into cylinders in its Asian facilities, and transporting those cylinders to the US. Therefore, there are some problems to be solved including increases in transportation costs and potential instability in supply of high-purity gases when there is congestion in global logistics network. To cope with these problems, SDK and SK Materials, which is an in-house independent company of SK Incorporated and produces high-purity gases for semiconductors, will start to give consideration to a plan to cooperatively produce high-purity gases for semiconductors in North America. In the global market for high-purity gases for semiconductors, SDK has the top share of the etching gas*1 market, and SK Materials has the top share of the cleaning gas*2 market and deposition gas*3 market. Thus, the two leading companies in the high-purity gas industry are now aiming to expand their business in the US cooperatively. In 2017, SDK and SK Materials established a joint corporation named SK Showa Denko, Co., Ltd. which produces and sells high-purity gases for semiconductors, and, in the Republic of Korea, they cooperatively produce CH3F, which is used mainly as etching gas for silicon nitride film. Now SK Showa Denko is constructing a new plant to produce HBr in the Republic of Korea, and the new plant is expected to be finished in July, 2022.As a "Co-creative Chemical Company," the Sowa Denko Group has positioned its electronics business including the business to produce and sell high-purity gases for semiconductors as Core-growth Business, and has been focusing on this electronics business, aiming to contribute to sustainable development of the global society. The Showa Denko Group will continue making its electronics business grow by responding rapidly to the growth of semiconductor market and continuing supply of leading-edge products.*1. Etching gas is used in etching process, which is a process to carve fine grooves and holes on the surface of wafers in order to make up electronic circuits, etc.*2. Cleaning gas is used to clean up inside of semiconductor chip production equipment.*3. Deposition gas forms silicon oxide film or silicon nitride film on the surface of wafers.About Showa Denko K.K.Showa Denko K.K. TOKYO, Nov 18, 2021 - (JCN Newswire via SEAPRWire.com) - Showa Denko (SDK; TSE: 4004) decided to raise prices of its high-purity gases for electronics which are used for production of semiconductor integrated circuits and other electronic materials. Specifically, SDK will raise prices of high-purity gases for electronics by 20% or more as from delivery on January 1, 2022.High-purity gases for electronics are used in the production of semiconductor integrated circuits, LCD panels, and GaN LEDs, as etching gases to produce electronic circuits by creating fine ditches and holes in thin films on silicon substrates, and as cleaning gases to remove unwanted chemical substances that adhere to chamber walls after deposition of thin films on silicon substrates. As for the current market condition of high-purity gases for electronics, while the demand for the gases continues increasing due to strong demand for semiconductor integrated circuits, our production costs have been increasing due to a rise in prices of raw materials and energy costs, in addition to a substantial rise in the cost of transportation. Although we worked hard to reduce costs by improving production efficiency, streamlining transportation, and other means, we have concluded that we have no alternative but to ask our customers to bear a part of the cost increase in order to ensure the stable production and supply of high-purity gases for electronics.About Showa Denko K.K.Showa Denko K.K. TOKYO, Dec 9, 2020 - (JCN Newswire) - Shanghai Showa Chemicals Co., Ltd. (SSC), a Chinese subsidiary of Showa Denko K.K. (SDK; TSE:4004), established a branch in Xi'an, Shaanxi Province, China, and started operation of the branch in December 2020, aiming to strengthen its business to sell and distribute high-purity gases for electronics in China. The new branch is SSC's third business base in China to sell and distribute high-purity gases for electronics, following those in Shanghai and Wuhan. The demand for semiconductors has been increasing due to the spread of the 5th generation mobile communication systems (5G) and cloud computing services, and increase in the amount of communicated data resulting from the rise in distribution of movie contents. The Chinese market for semiconductors has been expanding very rapidly due to the Chinese government's policy to nurture the electronics industry. Also SDK's high-purity gas business in China has been growing very rapidly because of the rapid expansion of the Chinese market.SDK has been taking positive measures to expand its high-purity gas business in China, including establishment of Wuhan Branch (a base to sell and distribute high-purity gases), expansion of the premises of Shanghai Plant for establishment of additional production facilities and hazardous chemicals warehouses, and establishment of a joint corporation in Chengdu. This time, we established the new branch in Xi'an as a base to sell and distribute high-purity gases, aiming to upgrade our customer service and strengthen our system that ensures stable supply of high-purity gases. The Showa Denko Group's Vision is to make itself a "KOSEIHA Company" (a group of KOSEIHA Businesses that can maintain profitability and stability at high levels over a long period), and the Group positions its business to produce and sell high-purity gases for electronics as a KOSEIHA Business. We will continue to make "thorough customer orientation" and "local consumption of locally produced products" our basic policies, aiming to maximize customer experience. And we will expand our business to produce and sell high-purity gases for electronics by responding positively to the lasting vigorous demand for high-purity gases.[Outline of the new branch](1) Branch name: Xi'an Branch, Shanghai Showa Chemicals Co., Ltd.(2) Location: Gaoxin District, Xi'an, Shaanxi Province, China,(3) Establishment: August 28, 2020(4) Scope of business: Sale of high-purity gases for electronics and other chemicals(5) Representative: Yoshinori Ohara (President, Shanghai Showa Chemicals Co., Ltd.)About Showa Denko K.K.Showa Denko K.K.
