Tennis: Holders France stunned by Canada at Billie Jean King Cup

PRAGUE (AGENCE FRANCE-PRESSE) - Champions France stumbled on the first hurdle as they lost to Canada in their opening tie of the maiden Billie Jean King Cup final tournament in Prague on Monday (Nov 1). The 2019 Fed Cup champions and the top seeds of its rebranded version have to beat Russia on Wednesday to keep their hopes of making the play-offs alive. Fiona Ferro lost the opening rubber to 353rd-ranked Canadian Francoise Abanda 6-4, 4-6, 4-6. "I started the match pretty well and I had many opportunities especially in the second set," Ferro said. "I was leading 2-0 in the second set and I couldn't take advantage of it so of course it's frustrating." Alize Cornet then levelled the score by edging Rebecca Marino 6-4, 7-6 (7-5). "For sure playing for my country makes it very special and you dig even deeper to try to play your best tennis," said Cornet. "It was not my best tennis today, but that's the best I could do today with all my heart and it was a pretty good game overall." But Cornet failed to convince as she teamed up with Clara Burel for the decisive doubles rubber and lost 6-3, 7-6 (8-6) to Gabriela Dabrowski and Marino. Canada were a late addition to the tournament, replacing Hungary after Budapest passed on the hosting rights to Prague. "To beat the No. 1 is obviously incredible and we should be really proud of ourselves," Marino beamed after the game. "As a team we came together and fought with a lot of heart." In the other afternoon tie at the rebranded Fed Cup tournament, Belgium won both singles to beat Belarus 2-1 in Group B. World No. 70 Greet Minnen first eased past 263rd-ranked Iryna Shymanovich of Belarus 6-2, 6-2 in the opening rubber. "I'm really happy, it was my first time playing for Belgium and I'm really happy that I could give our country the first win of the day," said Minnen. Elise Mertens added a second point when she overpowered Aliaksandra Sasnovich 6-2, 4-6, 6-2 in more than two hours. Sasnovich and Vera Lapko then won a consolation point for Belarus as they beat Mertens and Kirsten Flipkens 6-4, 6-3. "We started really strong, Greet was doing very well and that made it easier for me," said Mertens. "Today we're happy that we won both singles so we eventually took the win."

One-Two in Race 100 for TOYOTA GAZOO Racing

Toyota City, Japan, Jun 14, 2021 - (JCN Newswire via SEAPRWire.com) - TOYOTA GAZOO Racing celebrated its 100th World Championship sportscar race with a one-two victory for its new GR010 HYBRID Hypercar in the 8 Hours of Portimao following a flawless performance in Portugal. After missing pole position on Saturday, the team responded in style to win the second round of the 2021 FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) and earn its 32nd victory from 100 races in the series.Sebastien Buemi, Kazuki Nakajima and Brendon Hartley, in the #8 GR010 HYBRID, won a race-long battle with their team-mates to take victory by 1.8secs from World Champions Mike Conway, Kamui Kobayashi and Jose Maria Lopez in the #7 sister car. With a second win from two races in 2021, following victory in the season-opening 6 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps, TOYOTA GAZOO Racing has extended its teams' World Championship lead to 22 points. In the drivers' standings, the #8 crew hold a 20-point advantage over #7 with four races remaining.Following an exciting Hypercar battle at Spa last month, WEC's first visit to Portugal witnessed another close battle. Every second counted from the moment Sebastien took the start behind the pole position Alpine with Jose in third.Only 10 seconds separated the top three at the first fuel stops. Sebastien then briefly lead when the #36 stopped earlier. The Alpine requires additional pit stops over the eight hours due to a smaller fuel tank, but consequently benefits from a lighter fuel load and shorter stops. When Mike and Brendon took over their respective cars at the first driver changes, shortly before the two-hour mark, an incredibly close race developed at the front. Only 10 seconds separated the top three, led by the Alpine from the #7 and #8 GR010 HYBRIDs, after 75 laps.Early in his stint, Brendon was delayed badly behind an LMP2 car, just as Sebastien had been earlier, and this cost the #8 car second place. Mike was able to pass but during the next fuel stops, Brendon reclaimed the advantage by pitting a lap earlier. Then he again lost out to Mike due to heavy traffic. As half distance approached, Kamui and Kazuki took over driving duties with a full pit stop advantage over the Alpine. That meant Kamui lead by 10secs from Kazuki. The team therefore appeared to have the race under control until an LMP2 car got stuck in the gravel with just under three hours remaining. As a consequence the safety car closed up the field and brought the Alpine back into contention. When racing resumed with two-and-a-half hours remaining, the Alpine soon took second from Kazuki and pressured leader Kamui before pitting. The GR010 HYBRIDs responded and rebuilt their advantage. The #7, in Jose's hands, emerged as the leader ahead of Sebastien, who was saving fuel.A full course yellow slowed the race with 30 minutes to go and Jose brought the #7 in for a short fuel stop. He returned to the track just three seconds behind Sebastien in the #8, setting up a tense finish. When Jose closed up to the #8 car, team policy allowed him the opportunity to take the lead and pull away. However, Sebastien was able to stay directly behind so Jose was asked to reverse the order as per protocol.Sebastien therefore crossed the line to take the #8 GR010 HYBRID's second win of the season and maintain its 100% winning record, with Jose following directly behind and the #36 Alpine 1min 8.597secs further back after 300 laps. Hypercar battle will resume in Monza, Italy on 18 July.Hisatake Murata, Team President"A one-two victory is the perfect way to celebrate our 100th World Championship race. Thank you to the drivers, engineers and mechanics for doing a great job. We had to fight for this win and it was exciting to see the top three Hypercars battling for every tenth of a second. There was no room for mistakes from anyone; I was pleased to see us work as one team, giving our maximum without error. Well done to Alpine as well, who followed up their impressive qualifying with a big challenge in the race. We enjoyed competing against Glickenhaus for the first time as well and we look forward to the battles to come. The Hypercar class is really coming to life and I expect the fans can enjoy many close fights in the next races. After all our testing at Portimao, this was actually the first WEC race in Portugal. Thanks to everyone there for making the teams welcome and delivering a safe event. Now we look forward to Monza, where we won our first World Championship race in 1992. We hope to put on another good race and repeat that result."Mike Conway (GR010 HYBRID #7)"I think we all drove really well today. It could have gone a few different ways depending on race circumstances. Car #8 did a good fuel saving at the start of the race and went a little longer than us; they did well to open up their strategy. When the full course yellow came at the end that allowed us take our fuel stop and lose less time than normal, which was a lucky break. I thought our car was a tiny bit quicker all day but that's the way it works out sometimes, unfortunately. It's a one-two for the team which is the priority."Kamui Kobayashi (GR010 HYBRID #7)"My stint were good and we had good pace. It was tough in the traffic and I got a bit aggressive on the pit lane entry for my fuel stop which gave the team a scare but luckily I managed to slow down in time. We had been struggling a bit in practice and worked hard to find the pace in the race so I am happy with the speed we showed today. It was a pity that we needed the splash of fuel in the final minutes because this is what lost us the race in the end. The team did a great job and our car crew performed really well, just we weren't able to win the race but a one-two for the team is a good result."Jose Maria Lopez (GR010 HYBRID #7)"Eight hours here with the traffic is a tough race and I did over four hours in the car so it was a hard day. I am happy with the job that we did as a team to get the one-two. We didn't have the one-lap pace this week because Alpine was quicker, but with teamwork and efficiency we bounced back and took an important result for the team. On our car I am very happy with the job of the engineers, pit crew, Mike, Kamui and myself. We were leading comfortably before the safety car, but that changed things. We had the pace today but it wasn't to be."Sebastien Buemi (GR010 HYBRID #8)"I am thrilled that we managed to win the race today after a big fight. We were on a different strategy to car #7 and that made the difference. From the first stint onwards I was able to do a lap longer and still be in the fight. When the safety car came out, that helped us to avoid the splash of fuel later in the race and this was a key moment. I was trying to stretch the fuel and stay on the pace. Then we were unlucky with the full course yellow because otherwise car #7 would have been further behind after the splash, but that's racing sometimes."Kazuki Nakajima (GR010 HYBRID #8)"As our 100th race in the World Championship it is great to finish with a one-two. It was a very tight race and everyone pushed as hard as possible; neither car could do more to get the win. Congratulations to the team for this one-two. It is always nice to win the race after such a big effort. It is too early to speak about the World Championship but it's nice to have a small advantage. I am happy with the result and the team performance."Brendon Hartley (GR010 HYBRID #8)"We definitely had to work for this win. Traffic played a big part. The LMP2s were very difficult to pass - we needed them to help us out, which they generally did. I think we played a really nice strategic race because we could keep up the pace despite the longer stints. It was a nice team effort. Even with all those different strategies, you saw the two cars were separated by nothing in the last 20mins. We fought the whole way with #7 but in the end only one car can win and it was a one-two which is great for TOYOTA GAZOO Racing."8 Hours of Portimao results:1st #8 TOYOTA GAZOO Racing 300 laps2nd #7 TOYOTA GAZOO Racing +1.800secs 3rd #36 Alpine (Negrao/Lapierre/Vaxivierre) +1min 8.597secs4th #38 JOTA (Gonzalez/Da Costa/Davidson) +4 laps5th #28 JOTA (Geleal/Vandoorne/Blomqvist) +4 laps6th #22 United Autosports (Hanson/Scherer/Albuquerque) +5 laps Copyright 2021 JCN Newswire. Not all Spurs players happy

LONDON • Tottenham may be flying high in all competitions but manager Jose Mourinho has conceded that he is unable to keep all of his players happy. Spurs, who had already progressed to the last 32 of the Europa League, beat Antwerp 2-0 after strikes by Carlos Vinicius and Giovani lo Celso. They also sealed top spot in Group J on Thursday. However, Dele Alli failed to get off the bench, while fellow England midfielder Harry Winks walked straight down the tunnel when he came off for Tanguy Ndombele in the second half. "How can I keep them all happy? I don't think they're all happy at all, that's the nature of football. I cannot make miracles," Mourinho told BT Sport. "I told the players if they're not subbed on, just go for a hot shower. "I told every player that left the pitch to go because when the weather is cold, I prefer they go to the dressing room and have a shower. "Winks decided to go and I am happy with that because I am the one that told him to do it." Spurs head into tomorrow's Premier League clash at Crystal Palace on top of the standings and have not lost since the opening day of the season. However, Alli has been a peripheral player, making just two appearances, including one start, in the league. Winks fared slightly better with three league starts, and both looked visibly frustrated. "Let's not run away from reality. A player on the bench who realises all five subs have been used of course is not a happy player and I would not expect him to be happy," Mourinho said of Alli. Elsewhere, Group B winners Arsenal maintained their 100 per cent record as goals from Eddie Nketiah, Mohamed Elneny, Joe Willock and substitute Folarin Balogun sealed a 4-2 win at Dundalk. The last-32 draw will be made on Monday. REUTERS

Still packing a punch at 54

LOS ANGELES • There will be - there already has been - much rending of garments in the boxing world about whether an exhibition card headlined by two men in their 50s and a former National Basketball Association player fighting a YouTube star is good or bad for the sport. The fight card on Saturday night at Staples Centre in Los Angeles, was, however, undeniably fun. There were some real fights, and some less real fights. Mike Tyson, even at 54, showed he still has some of that speed and power that made him such a devastating fighter. Fifteen years after retiring with a 2005 loss to journeyman Kevin McBride, the former heavyweight champion, once known as the "baddest man on the planet", made his comeback in a closed-door, pay-per-view match-up against Roy Jones Jr that mixed curiosity and nostalgia. California State Athletic Commission officials required two-minute rounds instead of the usual three-minute ones, and mandated larger than normal 12oz (340g) gloves. It also said neither fighter could seek a knockout and declared there could be no official winner in safety moves for the over-50 fighters, but Tyson was the dominant fighter even though he applauded the draw result after eight rounds. "Sometimes that two minutes felt like three minutes," the American, who lost 45kg for the fight, said. "I'm glad I got this under my belt and I'm looking forward to doing it again. "I was very happy to go the eight rounds. I'm more happy with going the distance. I was afraid I might get hurt." Dana White, president of the Ultimate Fighting Championship, was impressed, saying he was "blown away" at how good Tyson looked. However, fellow boxing great Jones was unhappy at the bout being scored a draw even though he looked tired, clinching his opponent for much of the fight. "I ain't never happy with a draw. I don't do draw," the 51-year-old said, admitting that the body shots he absorbed had worn him down. "If he (Tyson) hits you with his head, punches, body shots, it don't matter, everything hurts," the American added. On the undercard, former New York Knicks guard Nate Robinson was knocked out after YouTube star Jake Paul dropped him three times en route to a second-round stoppage. "I talk a lot of s*** but I back it up," said the American social media influencer, who has over 20 million subscribers on YouTube. The 23-year-old later made his interviewer laugh after he called out mixed martial arts star and the biggest name in the UFC, Conor McGregor, vowing to knock him out. "I want to be in the sport for a long time. I'm in love with it. Why not?" said Paul, who is known for his skits and pranks. "I'm just getting started." Social media was equally abuzz over rapper Snoop Dogg, who performed a number of his hits while smoking marijuana before joining the commentary crew. Even US congresswoman Ilhan Omar weighed in on the over-the-top extravaganza, tweeting "this is more of a hip-hop show than a boxing show". AGENCE FRANCE-PRESSE, NYTIMES

Football: Deschamps says Pogba can’t be happy at United

PARIS • Paul Pogba "cannot be happy" with the situation he finds himself in at Manchester United, France coach Didier Deschamps has said ahead of the world champions' friendly with Finland today. The midfielder has started just four of United's seven Premier League games this season, and one of three in the Champions League. His future remains uncertain after suggesting last month he "dreams" of playing for Real Madrid. Deschamps is concerned with his lack of playing time. "He is in a situation with his club where he cannot be happy, neither with his playing time, nor with his positioning," he told reporters. "He is not in his best period, he has had a series of injuries and the Covid-19 which has hit him quite hard. He needs to find his rhythm. "With me, there is no such concern. When a player is in discomfort in his club, obviously, he is happy to play for the France team. He will tell me about his feelings and as I know him very well, it will go in a positive direction." After Finland, Les Bleus will take on European champions Portugal in Lisbon on Saturday before rounding off their Nations League campaign at home against Sweden on Tuesday. REUTERS
