MANCHESTER (AFP) - Manchester City's latest quest for Champions League glory got off to a winning start as Pep Guardiola's men came from behind to beat Porto 3-1 at the Etihad on Wednesday (Oct 21). Luis Diaz's solo effort punished a sloppy City start for the Portuguese champions, who felt hard done by when Sergio Aguero equalised thanks to a contentious penalty award. However, the Premier League side's quality shone through after half-time when Ilkay Gundogan's free-kick and substitute Ferran Torres' fine finish moved City to the top of Group C. Guardiola admitted on Tuesday to still feeling guilty over the experimental line-up and formation that led to City's latest Champions League calamity in last season's quarter-finals against Lyon little over two months ago. The Catalan is into the final year of his contract at the Etihad and potentially his last chance to land the prize City most desired when they brought him to Manchester five years ago. However, in the early weeks of the season, City have look a faded force from the prime of Guardiola's reign in winning back-to-back Premier League titles between 2017 and 2019. Without the injured Kevin De Bruyne, the English giants were again far from their free-flowing best and Porto took advantage early on. Former Benfica captain Ruben Dias was at fault for giving the ball away for the opener against his old rivals. But Diaz still had a huge amount to do as he eased past timid challenges from Rodrigo and Joao Cancelo before unleashing a powerful effort into the far corner. The visitors' lead only lasted seven minutes and City levelled with a good deal of fortune. Gundogan inadvertantly caught Porto 'keeper Agustin Marchesin as he tried to direct the ball goalwards and after the German's shot came off the post, Raheem Sterling was barged over in the box by Pepe. After a lengthy VAR review, Gundogan's challenge was not deemed a foul to overturn the initial decision to award a penalty and Aguero smashed home his first goal of the season. Porto still had the better chances to retake the lead before half-time as Matheus Uribe fired over with the goal gaping from a misplaced clearance by Ederson. Kyle Walker then saved Dias from scoring an own goal as he turned Moussa Marega's cut-back towards his own net. City regained control after the break, but it wasn't until a moment of magic from Gundogan 25 minutes from time that they went in front. The midfielder won a free-kick on the edge of the area and then curled the ball over the wall to the relief of Guardiola on the sidelines. Gundogan was starting for the first time since testing positive for coronavirus and he was replaced seconds after scoring as Guardiola added a fresh injection of pace in Phil Foden and Torres. The 20-year-olds combined to seal the points as Foden's pass fed the Spaniard, who skipped inside Pepe before curling high into the far corner. Marchesin kept the score down late on with great saves from Riyad Mahrez and Rodrigo, while tempers flared between Guardiola and Porto boss Sergio Conceiçao after Pepe and Sterling clashed off the ball. However, City suffered a late injury blow when captain Fernandinho, who had only been on the field nine minutes, was forced off with what looked like a muscle problem.

Toyota City, Japan, Oct 19, 2020 - (JCN Newswire) - TOYOTA GAZOO Racing (TGR) drove the GR Yaris and GR Supra(1) at the Goodwood SpeedWeek(2), held from October 16 through 18 at the Goodwood Motor Circuit in England, and posted images of the experience.GR Yaris at the Goodwood SpeedWeekThe Goodwood Festival of Speed (GFoS) is known as a motorsport festival where many motorsport fans, famous cars both old and new, and world class drivers gather from all over the world usually around July every year. The 2020 festival was postponed to next year or later due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, while a no-spectator event was held in its place as the Goodwood Speedweek. Scenes from the event were "broadcast" worldwide over the Internet. TGR raced at the GFoS in 2009, and has participated in the motorsports festival since 2012.In the rally stage (Rally Sprint) held from October 16 through 18, the new GR Yaris was driven as the zero car(3). In addition, in the Motorsports Circuit special stage (First Glance), the GR Yaris was driven in public. The GR Yaris was born as a vehicle that anyone can drive the way they want with peace of mind on any road in the world. The reason for this is that it incorporates lessons learned from the TOYOTA GAZOO Racing World Rally Team (WRT), including how to make cars that are competitive in the WRC(4), as well as learnings gleaned from evaluations given by professional drivers from the early stages of development. Based on the desire of master driver Morizo to "restore the Toyota sports cars," the new GR Yaris was created as the first Toyota vehicle developed with the reversed concept of turning a motorsports car into a production car. For this event, 2019 TGR WRT drivers, Jari-Matti Latvala and Kris Meeke, and Elfyn Evans who is racing as a 2020 TGR WRT driver drove the GR Yaris. As for GR production vehicles, the GR Supra limited edition(5) also appeared at the Goodwood Motor Circuit.Master driver Morizo also participated through video, sharing through images his passion for motorsports, the development of the GR Yaris, and the experience of riding in the passenger seat of the GR Yaris.VIDEO MESSAGE FROM MASTER DRIVER MORIZO (AKIO TOYODA, PRESIDENT TOYOTA MOTOR CORPORATION):"For car lovers like us, there is no better place to be than Goodwood. It's a feast for all the senses and even though we may not be able to smell the gasoline this year. Thanks to the imagination of the Duke of Richmond, we still get to see and hear many fantastic new cars, including a favorite of mine, this new Toyota GR Yaris. This is the production version of our Yaris WRC race car which we drove straight to the winner's circle in 2019, making us the current WRC champion! In truth, we participate in motorsports like WRC because we learn so much about how to make our cars more dynamic and fun to drive. In my role as Master Driver for Toyota, I was personally involved in the creation and tuning of this new GR Yaris, alongside our Gazoo team member the great Tommi Makinen. Unfortunately, I can't take you on a real test drive but here's a little taste of what it feels like. SINGAPORE - A man pulled from Marina Reservoir near the Promontory on Monday morning (Oct 19) was pronounced dead by paramedics at the scene. He was wearing only shorts when he was pulled out of the water near Customs House. Police said they received a call for assistance along 11 Marina Boulevard at 8.44am. The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF), which was activated at around 8.50am, could not find anyone in the water when they arrived. "Divers from the Disaster Assistance and Rescue Team were deployed to perform an underwater search. (They) subsequently retrieved a body approximately two metres from shore," added SCDF.
LEICESTER (REUTERS) - A superb stoppage-time goal from Ross Barkley gave Aston Villa a 1-0 victory at Leicester City in a scrappy contest on Sunday (Oct 18) that stretched the visitors' perfect Premier League start to four wins. The result left Villa second on 12 points with a game in hand over leaders Everton who have 13. Third-placed Liverpool have 10 from five and Leicester in fourth are on nine after suffering their second successive home defeat. Barkley, who is on loan at Villa from Chelsea, snatched the winner out of the blue at the King Power stadium with a stinging low shot from 25 metres which left Leicester goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel clutching thin air, as the ball bounced in front of him. The England midfielder, who also scored on his Villa debut in a 7-2 home drubbing of Liverpool in the previous round of matches, was delighted as they started the season with four wins for the first time since 1930. "An important win today as they were on top and we started slow but we improved and in the end deserved it," he told Sky Sports. "I was 50/50 in the week and (our physio) did a really good job getting me right. He said I would end up scoring the goal and I did so I dedicated the goal to him. "The manager has given me the platform to play and I am excited and looking forward to every game." A drab first half produced one chance at each end, with Villa keeper Emiliano Martinez denying Leicester right back Timothy Castagne before Egyptian forward Trezeguet fired wide after a flowing move by the visitors. Villa, who were on the back foot in the opening half, came forward with more purpose after the beak and went close in the 51st minute when central defender Ezri Konsa headed inches wide. When the match appeared to be heading for a goalless stalemate, Barkley stepped up to make sure Villa stayed the only Premier League team with a perfect record this season after they narrowly avoided relegation last term. "We have seen Ross Barkley do that enough times for Everton and Chelsea so we are pleased he did it for us today," Smith told the BBC. "It was touch and go whether he started today. He had a knock to the knee but a great goal and a real battling performance by the whole team. "We are just looking at the next game. We will savour what we are doing at the moment and look forward to the Leeds game."
NEWCASTLE (AFP) - Manchester United got back on track as Bruno Fernandes and Harry Maguire enjoyed sweet moments of redemption in their side's 4-1 win at Newcastle on Saturday (Oct 17). Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side suffered a humiliating 6-1 defeat against Tottenham at Old Trafford just before the international break. But they made partial amends for that embarrassment with a much-needed second win of the Premier League season. After Luke Shaw's own goal gave Newcastle an early lead, United captain Maguire scored the equaliser just days after he was widely criticised for his red card in England's Nations League defeat against Denmark at Wembley. Maguire's first Premier League goal since February was a cathartic moment after a troubled few months marred by poor performance on the pitch and his Greek court case off it. Fernandes also went from zero to hero as the midfielder's second half penalty was saved by Karl Darlow, before he hit a superb strike to put United ahead in the closing minutes. Aaron Wan-Bissaka made it three with his first goal for United and Marcus Rashford wrapped up the late goal blitz in stoppage-time. Although United left it late to finish off Newcastle, the result was no more than they deserved and Solskjaer will hope it is the start of a better period for his team after their troubled opening to the campaign. After labelling the Tottenham rout as the "worst" day of his career, Solskjaer made five changes for United's return to action. MOMENT TO SAVOUR Solskjaer's switches initially did nothing to improve United's fortunes as Newcastle cut through them in the second minute. Allain Saint-Maximin and Jonjo Shelvey combined to find Emil Krafth on the right side of the United penalty area and his cross took a deflection off Shaw's out-stretched leg as it looped beyond David De Gea. United thought they had equalised in the 19th minute when Fernandes fired into the top corner from Mata's pass, but VAR intervened to rule that the Spanish midfielder was offside before he provided the assist. If Solskjaer feared it was going to be another dispiriting night, his concerns were eased as Maguire finally enjoyed a moment to savour in the 23rd minute. Timing his run to meet Mata's corner, Maguire got in front of Jamal Lascelles at the near post and guided his header past Darlow from six yards. Saint-Maximin nearly restored Newcastle's lead with a powerful shot that De Gea turned away while clattering into a post, leaving United's keeper needing treatment on his shoulder before he could continue. Wan-Bissaka brought a superb save from Darlow before Rashford's shot was cleared off the line by Lascelles from the resulting corner. De Gea made an alert save to prevent Callum Wilson's close-range effort from Saint-Maximin's cross putting Newcastle ahead soon after the break. When Rashford was brought down by Jamal Lewis in the 57th minute, referee Craig Pawson initially appeared to ignore the offence but after consulting the pitchside monitor he ruled that the foul had taken place inside the penalty area. Fernandes has been a penalty expert for United since arriving in January, but for once he fluffed his lines as Darlow dived to his right to keep out the midfielder's spot-kick. Maguire nearly made up for Fernandes' miss when his header was cleared off the line by Shelvey, whose 30-yard blast drew a fine save from De Gea moments later. But Fernandes had the last laugh anyway as he took Rashford's clever reverse pass in the 86th minute and, from an acute angle, curled an exquisite shot into the top corner. Wan-Bissaka netted in the 90th minute from Rashford's pass and the provider turned scorer moments later with a cool finish from Fernandes' long ball.

SINGAPORE - A 13-year-old boy and a 10-year-old girl are the two new Covid-19 cases in the community reported by the Ministry of Health (MOH) on Wednesday (Oct 14). Both patients are school students and had last been at their respective schools on Oct 2. They were both quarantined from Oct 3, and were swabbed on that day but tested negative, said MOH in a statement on Wednesday night. Both later developed symptoms during quarantine and subsequently tested positive on Oct 13. There were no new local cases from workers' dormitories on Wednesday, said MOH. This was the second day in a row that no new cases from dormitories were reported. On Wednesday morning, Education Minister Lawrence Wong cautioned against complacency and said that Singapore will likely see new cases. In a Facebook post, Mr Wong, who co-chairs the multi-ministry task force tackling Covid-19, acknowledged the fatigue that has set in for the current measures but reiterated that "the virus had not been eradicated", adding that "it's still circulating in our community". "We still need to keep our guard up and stay very disciplined in complying with all the necessary safeguards. That's the mindset that will enable us to continue on this path of progressive re-opening in a safe and sustainable manner," he said. Imported cases made up the remaining three of the five new coronavirus cases announced on Wednesday. They were a Singaporean returning from the United Kingdom, one short-term visit pass holder returning from Russia and one student's pass holder returning from India. All the imported cases were placed on stay-home notices upon arrival in Singapore. They tested positive while serving their notices at dedicated facilities. Hi Five, an Indian Muslim food outlet in the Rochor area, was the sole new location added on Wednesday to a list of places visited by infectious Covid-19 patients. MOH provides the list of locations that such patients visited for at least 30 minutes and the times they visited to get people who were at those places to monitor their health closely for two weeks from the date of their visit. 5 new Covid-19 cases confirmed on Oct 14; none in dorms | THE BIG STORY The full list of locations and times can be found on the gov.sg website. The ministry has said that close contacts would already have been notified and that there is no need to avoid these places as they would have been cleaned if necessary. The average number of new daily cases in the community in a week has decreased from one case per day two weeks ago to fewer than one per day in the past week. The number of unlinked cases in the community in a week has also decreased from a daily average of fewer than one case per day to none in same period.
