TOKYO, Feb 2, 2022 - (JCN Newswire via SEAPRWire.com) - Mitsubishi Shipbuilding Co., Ltd., a Yokohama-based member of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) Group, has concluded a contract with Sanyu Kisen Co., Ltd., a Kobe-based enterprise principally engaged in management of ships navigation in Japanese as well as foreign waters, calling for the construction of a demonstration test ship to transport liquefied carbon dioxide (LCO2) in conjunction with initiatives of the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) in "CCUS R&D and Demonstration Related Project / Large-scale CCUS Demonstration in Tomakomai / Demonstration Project on CO2 Transportation / R&D and Demonstration Project for CO2 Marine Transportation" (the demonstration projects). Construction will get underway at the Enoura Plant of MHI's Shimonoseki Shipyard & Machinery Works, with completion and delivery scheduled for the second half of the fiscal 2023.Conceptual image of the LCO2 demonstration test shipThe Engineering Advancement Association of Japan (ENAA), one of the entities performing business relating to the demonstration projects, will charter the ship from Sanyu Kisen, the subcontractor, and operate it for the project purposes. Under consignment from ENAA, three additional project partners - Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha, Ltd. ("K" LINE), Nippon Gas Line Co., Ltd., and Ochanomizu University - will accelerate R&D of the LCO2 transportation technology and contribute to cost reduction of CCUS technology and safe, long-distance and large-scale transportation of LCO2.Although ships to carry LCO2 used in the food industry have previously been constructed and operated in Europe and Japan, the ship to be newly constructed is expected to be the world's first LCO2 carrier intended specifically for CCUS. Mitsubishi Shipbuilding will be in charge of all aspects from the ship design through construction, including the cargo containment system, applying its gas handling technologies and expertise cultivated through the construction of liquefied gas carriers (both LPG and LNG types).CCUS is garnering attention today as an effective means of achieving a carbon-neutral society. Because CO2 emissions sites are often located distant from the sites selected for carbon utilization or storage, demand is expected to increase for LCO2 carriers which can transport their cargo safely and economically. Through the experience to be gained by constructing the world's first LCO2 carrier built specifically for CCUS, MHI Group will strengthen its current strategic business focused on the energy transition. The Company will also continue its dedication to developing and providing the technologies relating to LCO2 carriers necessary for CCUS value chain building, to contribute to CO2 ecosystem development.Mitsubishi Shipbuilding, under its "MARINE FUTURE STREAM" growth strategy, has set two overarching targets: decarbonization through innovative technologies in maritime industry such as use of renewable energies and carbon recycling, and effective use of ocean spaces through autonomous operation and electrification. To achieve those goals, the company aims to pursue and realize diverse innovations applicable to the industry. The ongoing development of LCO2 carriers and active quest for commercial viability in this area are part of those initiatives, with the company's ultimate goal set on realizing decarbonization as a marine system integrator.About MHI GroupMitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) Group is one of the world's leading industrial groups, spanning energy, logistics & infrastructure, industrial machinery, aerospace and defense. Another remarkable feature of Faceless is the introduction of rewards for NFT holders. Faceless holders will become part of the Faceless Maison, an exclusive group of people with access to plethoras of fashion shows across the globe. Additionally, each piece of high-end clothing holders receive will come with the NFT number. Also, all of the pieces are handcrafted and will subsequently be hand-tailored to the NFT holder’s size and as hitherto mentioned, will have the NFT number stamped on the tag. Before the launch, Faceless will announce a partnership with one of the best designer schools in France. Owing to this partnership, these Haute clothing pieces will be created and distributed to holders, regardless of location. Championing the proliferation of fashion shows in the metaverse and NFT spaces, Faceless will release a set of collections for the Summer 22 event. The company plans to collaborate with famous luxury fashion brands and will make the announcement a month before the launch of Summer 22. LONDON (REUTERS) - Chelsea paid a heavy price for a 3-2 defeat at West Ham United as first Liverpool, then Manchester City, leapfrogged them in the Premier League title race on Saturday (Dec 4), with City ending the day on top for the first time this season. Thomas Tuchel's Chelsea began the day with a narrow lead and twice went in front at the London Stadium, only to be stunned by a late goal from substitute defender Arthur Masuaku. It looked as though Liverpool had let Chelsea off the hook as their later clash at Wolverhampton Wanderers went into stoppage time still goalless. But Divock Origi, making his 100th appearance as a Liverpool substitute, latched on to a Mohamed Salah pass to smash a winner past Wolves keeper Jose Sa in the 94th minute. In the day's late kickoff, Manchester City outclassed Watford in a 3-1 victory at Vicarage Road with Raheem Sterling paving the way before Bernardo Silva struck twice. Chelsea had seemed to be in control of their game after 28 minutes when Thiago Silva scored with a header from a Mason Mount corner but the European champions gifted the hosts a penalty in the 40th minute when Jorginho put his goalkeeper Edouard Mendy under pressure with a poor back pass. Mendy brought down Jarrod Bowen for a penalty that was converted by Manuel Lanzini. Mount restored Chelsea's lead with a superb volley four minutes later only for West Ham to draw level early in the second half when Bowen fired in hard and low. Masuaku clinched it for the fourth-placed hosts in the 87th minute with a cross that flew into the goal. It meant Chelsea slipped to third spot with 33 points from 15 games, one point behind Liverpool and two behind Manchester City. West Ham have 27 points. "We are not good enough in the details at the moment,"Tuchel told reporters. "We do too many big mistakes." Wolves had defended resolutely against a Liverpool side who have been in unstoppable goalscoring form. But all their hard work came to nothing as Origi showed what a great impact substitute he can be, with his winner sparking wild celebrations on the Liverpool bench. "It was clear: when you don't score you just have to keep going and that's what we did," manager Juergen Klopp said. "And then Divock Origi, the legend, came and finished it off for us. I love it." "There are always things we have to improve but right now, the guys are playing at a really good level," manager Pep Guardiola said. "We scored three beautiful goals and we could have scored more." Newcastle United's wait for a first league victory of the season is over after Callum Wilson's goal earned them a 1-0 victory against fellow relegation battlers Burnley. The win lifted Newcastle off the bottom on goal difference, above Norwich City who play at Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday. Brighton & Hove Albion drew for the eighth time this season as Neal Maupay rescued a point in a 1-1 draw at Southampton. Maupay struck in the eighth minute of stoppage time to deny Saints their fourth league win of the season after Armando Broja had give them a first-half lead. NEWCASTLE, ENGLAND (REUTERS) - Newcastle United finally ended their season-long wait for a win, beating bottom-three rivals Burnley 1-0 at St James' Park in the Premier League on Saturday (Dec 4) thanks to a 40th-minute goal from Callum Wilson. An error by Burnley keeper Nick Pope gifted Newcastle the goal and their first victory in their 15th attempt in the campaign. Manager Eddie Howe, appointed last month after the dismissal of Steve Bruce, will also be delighted at his team's first clean sheet of the campaign. Burnley had been on top until Pope came deep to collect a cross but, under challenge from Fabian Schar, dropped the ball and Wilson reacted superbly, driving into the unguarded goal with a shot on the turn. Things got worse for Burnley when in-form forward Maxwel Cornet had to go off with an injury before the break and his replacement Matej Vydra missed a great chance to level for the Clarets. Newcastle were the better side after the break with Miguel Almiron going close twice and Jonjo Shelvey forcing a good save out of Pope. Burnley thought they had levelled through substitute Jay Rodriguez but the effort was ruled out for offside. The two clubs remain in the relegation zone, both on 10 points, with Burnley in 18th place, above 19th-placed Newcastle on goal difference but with a game in hand. Bottom club Norwich City, also on 10 points, face Tottenham on Sunday. "It has been a long time coming. Hopefully this is a catalyst for other things," said Wilson. "Against a team like Burnley it is important you score the first goal. They are hard to break down when they are set. Credit to the lads at the back too. But we can't get carried away. "There are a lot of points to play for. We knew there would be a turning point; hopefully this is it," he said. JEDDAH, SAUDI ARABIA (REUTERS) - Seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton made the early running on the new track in Jeddah as he clocked the fastest time in both practice sessions on Friday (Dec 3) for the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix. The Mercedes driver, who will race in support of human rights and the LGBTQ+ community this weekend by wearing a rainbow-coloured helmet, posted a quickest time of 1min 29.786secs in the first session on the new street circuit. He later eclipsed that with 1min 29.018secs under the lights in the curtailed second session. It was the first time that the drivers had come up against the new Jeddah Corniche circuit with its series of high-speed bends which proved too much for Charles Leclerc who ploughed his Ferrari into the wall at Turn 22 towards the end of the second session. The Monegasque, who still pulled the 10th fastest time, confirmed he was okay over the radio but the session was red flagged and was not resumed. Other drivers appeared to give the thumbs-up to the new track. “This track is cool,” Valtteri Bottas told Mercedes engineers during the first session before clocking the day’s second quickest time of 1min 29.079secs, just 0.61secs behind his teammate. AlphaTauri’s Pierre Gasly was third quickest, ahead of Red Bull’s Max Verstappen who went round in 1min 29.213secs. Verstappen takes an eight-point lead over Hamilton into the penultimate race of the season and could potentially win the title on Sunday. MANCHESTER, UNITED KINGDOM (AFP) - Cristiano Ronaldo surpassed 800 goals for club and country with a double as Manchester United beat Arsenal 3-2 to close to within three points of the Premier League top four. With new interim manager Ralf Rangnick watching from the stands, the German was given a glimpse of both the talent he will have to work with and problems he has to solve at Old Trafford. Arsenal went ahead in bizarre circumstances as Emile Smith Rowe's shot trickled in with United goalkeeper David De Gea down injured before Bruno Fernandes levelled. Ronaldo's 800th career goal was quickly cancelled out by Martin Odegaard. But the five-time Ballon d'Or winner had the final say when he crashed home a penalty 20 minutes from time. A vital victory for United cuts the gap between the sides to two points in the battle for a place in next season's Champions League. Three points also rounds off a fine stint for Michael Carrick in caretaker charge since Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was sacked after progress to the Champions League last 16 and a creditable 1-1 draw at Premier League leaders Chelsea. The United fans paid homage to Solskjaer with a banner in the first match at Old Trafford since he was dismissed. However, once the action got underway, nothing seemed to have changed from the final days of the Norwegian's reign as United started in a similar fashion to humiliating home defeats to Liverpool and Manchester City. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Ben White had chances for the visitors inside the first two minutes. When Arsenal did go in front on 13 minutes it was in strange fashion. Smith Rowe's shot bounced into an unguarded net with De Gea down injured having been stood on by his own player Fred. Referee Martin Atkinson blew the whistle to stop play, but only after the ball had crossed the line and therefore the goal had to stand. Arsenal players rebuffed United's request to stand aside and allow them to equalise in a gesture of fair play. But they did so of their own accord a minute before half-time when Jadon Sancho and Fred combined to tee up Fernandes to slot home his first goal since September. More on this topic Related Story Football: United's Rangnick to start work Friday after getting work visa Related Story Podcast: Ryan Giggs and Nicky Butt on Man United woes In stark contrast to a cagey first 45 minutes, the second period raged from end to end. De Gea made amends for his part in the opening goal with a flying save to deny Gabriel before Aaron Ramsdale produced an even better stop at the other end to divert Ronaldo's drive to safety. Ronaldo was dropped to the bench by Carrick at Stamford Bridge on Sunday amid suggestions that may become a more common occurrence under Rangnick's high-energy style. Accommodating the 36-year-old has been one of the causes of United's decline defensively this season. But Ronaldo has kept his end of the bargain with 12 goals in 17 games since returning for a second spell with the Red Devils. He coolly slotted home Marcus Rashford's cross, but United's lead lasted just two minutes as Arsenal responded with almost a carbon copy equaliser. This time Gabriel Martinelli was the provider for Odegaard to steer into the far corner. This time he stood aside for his international teammate, who smashed the ball high past Ramsdale for his 130th United goal across two spells. NEWCASTLE, UNITED KINGDOM (AFP) - Teemu Pukki denied 10-man Newcastle a first win all season as Norwich earned a 1-1 draw at St James' Park on Tuesday (Nov 30), but wasted a huge chance to deepen the Magpies' relegation fears. Newcastle were a man short for more than 80 minutes after Ciaran Clark saw red for pulling down Pukki. However, Norwich were largely wasteful in trying to make that advantage count and fell behind to Callum Wilson's penalty on the hour mark. Pukki smashed home on the volley to equalise 11 minutes from time and Norwich should have claimed a massive three points in stoppage time when Martin Dubravka saved from Pierre Lees-Melou. Eddie Howe's men edge to within five points of safety in their bid to minimise the damage before they can turn to the Saudi sovereign wealth fund to strengthen in the January transfer window. Howe was on the sideline as Newcastle boss at St James' Park for the first time, having missed the 3-3 draw with Brentford 10 days ago after testing positive for coronavirus. The former Bournemouth boss could not have asked for a worse start to a crucial clash between the bottom two before kick-off when Clark inexplicably hauled down Pukki as he threatened to burst clear on goal. No side has conceded more goals in the Premier League than Newcastle this season, but Norwich are also the lowest scorers and their lack of quality in the final third was obvious as they laboured to create chances despite dominating possession. Newcastle looked to have snatched a first win under Saudi ownsership when Billy Gilmour was penalised for handball inside his own box after a VAR review. Tim Krul nearly denied his former club as he got a hand to Wilson's spot-kick, but saw the ball rebound in off the underside of the bar. Allan Saint-Maximin blazed over with a good chance to double Newcastle's lead on the counter-attack. And that proved costly as Norwich finally produced a moment of quality. Dimitris Giannoulis helped the ball back into the box after Dubravka flapped at a cross and Pukki smashed home a volley into the top corner. Norwich then piled on the pressure in the closing stages, but failed to find the winner as Dubravka made amends for his part in the equaliser with a crucial late save. The Canaries do at least remain unbeaten in three games under new manager Dean Smith as they moved to within two points of safety.
(REUTERS) - PGA Tour pioneer Lee Elder, the first black player to compete at the Masters, has died at age 87. The tour confirmed his death on Monday (Nov 29) morning. Elder, a four-time tour winner, made his ground-breaking appearance at Augusta National in 1975. He was celebrated at the Masters last April when he was named an honorary starter alongside Jack Nicklaus and Gary Player. "My heart is very soft this morning, not heavy soft, soft because of the wonderful things that I have encountered since arriving here on Monday and being able to see some of the great friends that I have made over the past years, especially like these two gentlemen that are here," Elder said at the time of Nicklaus and Player. "We have competed against each other, and we have certainly enjoyed a lot of pleasant moments. I just want to say thank you so very much to have me here. It's a great honour, and I cherish it very much, and I will always cherish it, and I want to thank the chairman for extending me this great privilege." Elder went on to play in five more Masters and 34 Major championships, recording seven top-25 finishes. He tied for 11th at both the 1974 PGA Championship and the 1979 US Open. His wins on the tour were the 1974 Monsanto Open (which earned him entry to the 1975 Masters), 1976 Houston Open, 1978 Greater Milwaukee Open and 1978 American Express Westchester Classic. When Tiger Woods became the first black player to win the Masters in 1997, he acknowledged the groundwork laid by Elder and Charlie Sifford - the first black golfer to compete on the PGA Tour. "I wasn't the pioneer. Charlie Sifford, Lee Elder and Teddy Rhodes paved the way," Woods said at the time. "I was thinking about them and what they've done for me as I was coming up the 18th fairway. I said a little prayer and a thanks to those guys. They are the ones who did it for me." Elder's story was inspirational regardless of race, as he overcame personal tragedy long before qualifying for the PGA Tour through the qualifying school in 1968. Born in Dallas in 1934, Elder lost both parents before he was 10. His father was killed in Germany in World War II and his mother died three months later. SINGAPORE - Four people boarded the first bus from Malaysia under the land vaccinated travel lane (VTL) on Monday morning (Nov 29), but only three managed to enter Singapore. The first bus arrived at Queen Street Bus Terminal at 9.48am, after a delay. Ms Renee Looi, who was on the first bus, told The Straits Times that one man was unable to complete the journey because he was held up at the Johor Baru Customs. She said: “He boarded the bus at Larkin Sentral Bus Terminal but when we arrived at the checkpoint, he was brought to another place by an officer. “We waited for him but in the end, we left without him.” Ms Looi, 29, made a trip to Johor Baru three weeks ago to visit her father before the new VTL arrangement kicked in. However, she had to first serve a week-long quarantine at a hotel there. “I was actually planning to come back yesterday, but decided to delay it by a day since they announced the VTL and I wouldn’t have to be quarantined,” she said. Meanwhile, Mr Alex Lee, 40, was the sole passenger on the second bus that arrived at 9.51am. Mr Lee, who works in sales, said his bus departed from Larkin Sentral Bus Terminal in Johor Baru at 7.30am. "There were delays at the JB customs but I'm not too sure what's the issue. I waited inside the bus for about 45 minutes, but otherwise, it's quite smooth," he added. Mr Lee, who had not seen his wife and two children since March last year, went to Malaysia about two weeks ago to visit them. He said: "My wife has to take care of our kids and there is no one to help her, so I hope to bring them over to Singapore soon. Although I can video-call them, there's no human touch." There was little fanfare at the terminal, as passengers arrived without family or friends receiving them. Speaking to reporters at Woodlands Checkpoint, Superintendent Tong Weijie, deputy commander (ground operations) at the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA), said most of the travellers who arrived were able to clear the automated lanes as they had brought along the necessary documents and have submitted the SG Arrival Card in advance. Travellers to Singapore are required to submit the SG Arrival Card, which contains health declaration information, within three days before arrival. “ICA will continue to monitor the ground situation, fine-tune our processes and improve the traveller’s experience,” he said. The land VTL currently prioritises workers in Singapore or Malaysia who have not been able to return home since the land border was shut in March last year. They will no longer have to serve quarantine upon arrival, unlike those returning home via the Periodic Commuting Arrangement, which requires a seven-day quarantine at designated facilities or hotels upon arrival in Malaysia or Singapore. Instead, they must test negative in a pre-departure polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test or professionally administered antigen rapid test (ART) - done within two days before departure. On arrival, they will also be required to take an ART test. As at 12.40pm, the first bus run by the other bus operator, Transtar Travel, has yet to arrive at Woodlands Bus Temporary Interchange after it was delayed for more than three hours.
