Boxing: Pacquiao not taking last-minute replacement Ugas lightly

MANILA (REUTERS) - Manny Pacquiao said on Wednesday (Aug 11) that Cuban Yordenis Ugas, who agreed to put his WBA welterweight championship belt on the line against the Filipino southpaw on short notice, is not to be underestimated. Pacquiao was preparing to fight WBC and IBF welterweight champion Errol Spence Jr on Aug 21 in Las Vegas but a retinal tear forced the American to withdraw and on Tuesday Ugas was announced as Pacquiao's new opponent. Ugas (26-4, 12 KOs) beat American Abel Ramos for the vacant WBA regular welterweight title last September and was elevated to WBA super champion after Pacquiao was stripped of the belt because of inactivity given he had not fought since July 2019. "This fight is not an easy fight," eight-division champion Pacquiao said in a virtual news conference. "Ugas is a champion, took my belt and we have to settle it inside the ring. "I never take him lightly because he is a kind of fighter that you better not underestimate. This is going to be a good fight also." Ugas, who won a bronze medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, has established himself as an elite welterweight since returning from a layoff in 2016. The 35-year-old Cuban has won 11 of his last 12 fights, the only defeat a controversial split decision loss to American Shawn Porter in March 2019. Ugas was originally set to make his first title defence against Fabian Maidana on the Aug 21 undercard but the Argentine also withdrew through injury, which opened the door for Ugas to be promoted from the undercard to the main event. Boxing: Fury-Wilder heavyweight fight postponed over Covid outbreak, says WBC

LOS ANGELES (AFP) - Tyson Fury's heavyweight title defence against Deontay Wilder has been postponed after the champion and members of his camp contracted Covid-19, the World Boxing Council (WBC) confirmed on Friday (July 9). In a brief post on Twitter, the WBC confirmed the July 24 bout had been postponed but did not say when the trilogy fight would be rescheduled. "Fury vs Wilder III will be postponed," the WBC said. "We wish Tyson Fury's team and him speedy recovery from Covid." Multiple reports in the US and Britain have said Fury and several members of his team had tested positive for Covid-19 at their Las Vegas training base. ESPN reported that the fight at Las Vegas's T-Mobile Arena had been tentatively rescheduled for Oct 9. The positive test was the latest twist to what has been a tortuous year for Fury. The undefeated "Gypsy King" had been set to face a money-spinning heavyweight unification fight against fellow Briton Anthony Joshua. However that fight was scuppered after an arbitrator ruled that Fury was legally obligated to face Wilder in a third fight. Fury handed Wilder a brutal beating in seven one-sided rounds in their second fight in February 2020. Their first fight, in December 2018, ended in a controversial split-decision draw in which Fury was knocked down twice. Neither Wilder, 35, nor Fury, has fought since their bout in Las Vegas last year. Football: Leicester want to fight for trophies despite smaller budget, says Rodgers

LEICESTER, ENGLAND (REUTERS) - Leicester City want to build on their FA Cup victory and challenge for greater honours next season even though they lack the financial muscle to compete with the Premier League's bigger clubs, manager Brendan Rodgers said on Friday (May 21). Leicester are fifth in the standings - level on 66 points with Liverpool and one behind Chelsea - after dropping out of the top four for the first time this season following Tuesday's loss at the London club. "We want to fight for trophies," Rodgers told a news conference. "If we could become a sustainable club in European football, that shows we're successful. Commercially, we're 10th. For budget, we are eighth. "It will be difficult to compete with clubs three or four times our budget but it doesn't stop us fighting. The lowest we will finish is sixth this season." Leicester go into Sunday's fixture against Tottenham Hotspur behind fourth-placed Liverpool on goal difference and, barring a huge win over Spurs, they will miss out on reaching the Champions League for the first time since 2016 if Liverpool beat Crystal Palace. Rodgers said although they were ecstatic at winning the FA Cup for the first time in the club's history, they would be disappointed if they did not finish in the top four as they fight "two of Europe's biggest clubs" for the final two places. "We would have no one (else) to blame. We take the responsibility ourselves, we'll fight to the end," he added. "What we don't want is for the door to be open for us and us not to walk through it. So we need to get a victory and see where it takes us. "Our concentration is on winning the game against a talented Spurs team. If we finish on 69 points and don't make it into the Champions League, we have been unfortunate." Rodgers confirmed injured defender Jonny Evans would miss the clash with Spurs. Reds in no position to rotate: Klopp

LONDON • Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp says his mounting injury list ahead of today's Champions League clash with Ajax means he does not have enough fit players to rotate his squad. James Milner is the latest player on the sidelines after the utility man injured his hamstring in Saturday's Premier League draw at Brighton. Trent Alexander-Arnold has not yet been given the green light to return to full training, while fellow defenders Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez are both out with long-term injuries. Midfield quartet Xherdan Shaqiri, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain as well as Naby Keita and Thiago Alcantara will also miss the game at Anfield. Asked at his virtual pre-match press conference yesterday if fixture congestion meant he would have to prioritise between Europe and the league, Klopp said he was in no position to rotate his squad. "I don't have enough players to prioritise. It's not about the competition it's about the players. On Saturday, the fittest players played," the German added. On his ever-growing injury list, Klopp appeared resigned despite his recent rants at broadcasters BT Sport and Sky Sports for scheduling early kick-offs the past two Saturdays after playing in the Champions League in midweek. "It's not a perfect situation but obviously, not enough people want to offer us any kind of help (with the fixture scheduling), not only for us but for (all) football people. "We just have to deal with it," he said. "I said it always - as long as we can line up with 11 players, we will fight with all we have and that's still the case." He also went into detail regarding Thiago's injury for the first time. The Spain international was poleaxed by Richarlison in the Merseyside derby on Oct 17. The Everton forward was sent off for that and Klopp expressed his unhappiness at how bad the £25 million (S$44.7 million) signing from Bayern Munich, who has not played since, was hurt. According to local daily Liverpool Echo, Thiago, who has made just two appearances for his new club, is unlikely to play again this year. Klopp revealed he suffered a "massive impact" to his knee. WITH OUR LAST MEN STANDING I said it always - as long as we can line up with 11 players, we will fight with all we have and that's still the case. JURGEN KLOPP,  remaining defiant in the face of his side's growing injury list. He said: "That day when Thiago got injured in that challenge in the Everton game, there was another bad injury (to van Dijk) and after the scans, it was like one was really bad news and the other one was really good news because nothing was broken, nothing was ruptured. "The problem is in a situation like that, nothing is ruptured, nothing is broken and that means everybody thinks, 'OK, you can go after a few days', but the impact on the leg was that big that it is still not OK. I can't say exactly when he will be fine, but it will take a few weeks still with Thiago." The Reds will go through to the knockout stage from Group D if they avoid losing to Ajax and will be group winners if they win and Atalanta fail to beat Midtjylland.
