SportsIcon launches the Future Icons initiative to launch the careers of athletes around the world

London, UK, October 26, 2022 – (SEAPRWire) -SportsIcon, the NFT platform for athletes, has announced its Future Icons program. Fans can invest in the next generation of athletes who could change the world. By investing they can participate in their financial success. Currently, young athletes with a passion to compete at a national or international level, are struggling to get the significant financial backing to get to that stage. This often leads to athletes having to become entrepreneurs, business people and financial wizards when all they want to do is train and focus on the sport. Without this initial financial stability, a lot of brilliant stars never make it to professional athletes. SportsIcon’s Future Icons program will allow fans to invest in upcoming athletes, share in their success and connect with them. Fans are now able to invest in athletes they believe in and participate in their financial upside, supporting them with a framework that otherwise doesn’t exist. If an athlete’s career takes off then the fans that helped make that dream come true will increase the value of the NFTs that they own, and that helped make it happen. SportsIcon CEO and Co-Founder Chris Worsey said: “We want to democratise opportunity for athletes. There are thousands of athletes globally that are good enough but never make it due to a lack of capital and network. We aim to change that! Fans will support athletes at the earlier stages of their career and will be rewarded through financial upside, money can’t buy experiences and community. Imagine identifying an athlete that goes on to have a career like Lewis Hamilton or Serina Williams – and you were part of the backing that made them into legends, the upside will be very substantial indeed. We think this is a revolutionary idea enabled by web3 that can completely redefine fan to athlete relationships”. Fans and athletes that want to be considered for the Future Icons program can sign up here: https://futureicons.sportsicon.com/ SportsIcon is backed by rapper turned investor Nas, Dapper Labs, Dapper Labs CEO Roham Gharegozlou, Jeffrey Katenzburg WndrCo, Youtube Founder Chad Hurley, Hedera and Reserve Founder Andrew Masanto and ex NBA star Andrew Bogut. Football: Salah condemns Gerrard’s Villa to defeat on Liverpool return

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND (REUTERS) - Steven Gerrard's return to Anfield as Aston Villa manager ended in a 1-0 defeat by Liverpool with a 67th minute Mohamed Salah penalty keeping the Merseysiders a point behind Premier League leaders Manchester City. There was little fanfare for Gerrard, the Liverpool-born former captain and Champions League winner, as he took his place in the technical area before the game and stuck with his approach of treating the game like any other. Even at the final whistle, when Liverpool fans finally broke into a chorus of his name, Gerrard, on the pitch shaking hands with players and officials, made no reciprocal gesture, saving his applause for Villa's visiting support. Asked about the reaction from the Liverpool fans to his return, Gerrard was ice cold. "For me the priority is the support from the Aston Villa fans," he said. It was a professional approach from Gerrard, one which showed respect for his new club and their supporters and he will have added to his growing reputation as a manager from the way he set his team up to frustrate Juergen Klopp's side. It was a conservative approach, with Ollie Watkins playing as a lone striker supported by veteran Ashley Young and a bank of three midfielders sat in front of the back four, but it succeeded in limiting Liverpool's space. Inevitably though, Liverpool dominated the first half with Villa keeper Emiliano Martinez doing well to keep out a back-post header from Andy Robertson and a close-range shot at the near post from Salah. After the break, Martinez produced a brilliant reflex stop to keep out a powerful header from Virgil van Dijk but Liverpool's pressure finally paid off when Salah went down in the box under challenge from Tyrone Mings. The Egyptian fired home an unstoppable spot-kick after protests from Villa. Gerrard felt that the decision was "soft" and was puzzled that referee Stuart Attwell did not go to the pitchside monitor to review the decision. The Villa manager threw on forward Danny Ings and the attack-minded Emiliano Buendia in a bid to find a late leveller and the way his side put pressure on the Liverpool defence in the latter stages left him wondering what might have been had he taken a more positive approach earlier. Villa claimed in vain for a late penalty when Ings went down as Liverpool keeper Alisson Becker challenged leaving Gerrard frustrated. "I thought Liverpool were better in terms of general play. Their style was better than ours, but we've done so well to contain them for large periods. Ultimately the game has been decided by a penalty. There were two penalty incidents in the game, Liverpool got theirs," he said. "For 75 minutes we were outstanding. Clearly the better side and played in all the areas we needed to play. We created moments," said the German. "But we go 1-0 up and... Argh. Then the game opens up, let me say it like this... We lost the rhythm. That's a problem in football so you have to hold it from the beginning." Football: Fifa bans Hungary fans from Poland qualifier after Wembley clashes

ZURICH (REUTERS) - Hungary fans will be barred from attending their team's final World Cup qualifier away to Poland following clashes with police during last month's group game against England at Wembley Stadium, world soccer's governing body (Fifa) said on Monday (Nov 1). Britain's Metropolitan Police said the violence broke out after the alleged racial abuse of a steward in the Group I qualifier on Oct 12 that ended in a 1-1 draw. Fifa on Monday listed the "lighting of fireworks and lack of order in the stadium - improper conduct by spectators" as the reasons for banning Hungary fans for the Warsaw game on Nov 15. They also fined the Hungarian Football Federation 75,000 Swiss francs ($82,309.04). In September, Fifa had asked Hungary to play two games behind closed doors following the racism faced by England players in their clash in Budapest. Hungary are fourth in Group I with 11 points from eight games, nine points adrift of leaders England and six behind Poland. Football: Italy’s Donnarumma booed by Milan fans in Nations League game

MILAN (REUTERS) - Gianluigi Donnarumma's hopes of receiving a warm welcome from AC Milan fans on his return to the San Siro stadium were dashed on Wednesday (Oct 6) as the club's former goalkeeper was booed during Italy's Nations League semi-final against Spain. Donnarumma left the Rossoneri to join French club Paris St Germain in July after six seasons in Milan and some supporters have not forgiven the 22-year-old for his departure. The goalkeeper helped his former side finish second in Serie A last season to secure Champions League qualification for the first time since 2013-14 and also played a decisive role in Italy's Euro 2020 success in July, where he was named Player of the Tournament. "I'm excited, I hope there is nothing (negative from fans). I will always be a Milan fan," Donnarumma told a news conference on Monday. There was no happy homecoming, however. Some Milan supporters unfurled a banner with the words "Donnarumma you are not going to be welcomed anymore in Milan" just outside the hotel where the Italian team was staying, Italian media reported. The goalkeeper's name was booed when the stadium announcer named Italy's lineup and Donnarumma was targeted every time he touched the ball in Wednesday's semi-final, which Spain won 2-1 to halt Italy's world record winning streak. Asked whether such treatment had affected Italy's performance, coach Roberto Mancini showed some frustration. "We were sorry because it was Italy's game and... I think that Italy should be put before anything," he said. More on this topic   Related Story Football: Spain end Italy's unbeaten run to reach Nations League final

Football: Brentford beat Arsenal 2-0 for dream start to Premier League life

LONDON (REUTERS) - The Premier League season got off to a pulsating start on Friday (Aug 13) as Brentford marked their first game in the top flight for 74 years and their first in front of fans at their new stadium with an emotional 2-0 victory over a ragged Arsenal. Sergi Canos and Christian Norgaard scored midway through each half to spark wild celebrations by the home fans who have waited so long to take their place in their new 17,500-capacity home and even longer to watch top-flight football. The win was well deserved as Brentford, revelling in their chance to take on the big boys, took the game to an Arsenal team who looked disjointed and toothless in the absence of “unwell” strike duo Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette. In a satisfying symmetry, the teams’ last meeting was a 1-0 win for Arsenal at the old Griffin Park in May 1947, Brentford’s last game in the old first division as they were relegated – never expecting it would take them 74 years to get back. It has been a tough road too, with a record nine playoff failures before they finally triumphed last season. Given the honour of starting the new season, the sense of excitement was palpable all around the ground as fans remembered how to meet and greet. They were rewarded with a great performance as Canos carved his name into the west London club’s Hall of Fame when he cut inside Calum Chambers and drilled a low shot inside the near post of Bernd Leno after 22 minutes to spark an explosion of joy. Arsenal, with a new-look team struggling to gel, offered little and Brentford lifted the tempo in the second half as shots by Canos and Bryan Mbeumo were well saved by Leno. However, the goalkeeper found himself crowded out during a long throw-in in the 73rd-minute, and with the Arsenal defenders hesitating, Norgaard leapt high to nod in the bouncing ball. Arsenal threw on Bukayo Saka, a month after his decisive penalty shoot-out miss for England in the Euro 2020 final, and, in an uplifting contrast to the racial abuse he received after that match, the 19-year-old was given a standing ovation by the Brentford fans. There was a bigger cheer though when home keeper David Raya made an excellent low save to deny Nicolas Pepe in the closing minutes, the final nail in Arsenal’s coffin. After a lap of honour by players and manager Thomas Frank worthy of a cup final win, the red and white bedecked fans filed off into the night singing “we are top of the league” and though they are unlikely to stay there for long, nobody can begrudge them their moment in the sun. Motor racing: F1 boss hails ‘sensational’ sprint debut

SILVERSTONE, ENGLAND (REUTERS) - Formula One's Ross Brawn hailed a new sprint race as a "sensational" success after its British Grand Prix debut on Saturday (July 17). The experimental format, with qualifying on Friday for a 17-lap sprint on Saturday to decide the grid for Sunday's race, is aimed at providing more thrills for fans with three days of competitive action. It is being trialled at three races this year, with Silverstone the first, and could be rolled out to more next season depending on the reaction from fans. "We're already getting massive feedback, positive feedback, from the fans on social media," said the managing director for motorsport. "They love it. But there will be fans who make some comments and what they didn't understand or appreciate, we'll take that into account as well." Brawn, a former Honda team boss who won championships with his own team in 2009 before it was sold to Mercedes, was a main architect of the change and said he was "very pleased" with how it turned out. "That first lap or so was completely nail-biting, and sensational, and then we had the little duels in the rest of the race," he said. "Alonso's performance today was sensational, got my vote for the highlight of the race. I'd buy a ticket for that any day, so we're very pleased." Spaniard Alonso, a double world champion, made a great start in his Alpine to rocket from 11th on the grid to fifth within a few corners. "I'm not a fan of live experimenting but this one is not hugely controversial," he said. "I'm totally against reverse grids, it's just fake, but here everybody started from the right positions. "Fundamentally, I think if we do five races like this, I'm pro," added the Austrian. Football: Ticketless England fans storm Wembley gates ahead of Euro final

LONDON (AFP) - Hundreds of ticketless fans tried to storm the Wembley gates in a bid to gain entry to England's Euro 2020 final against Italy on Sunday (July 11). Footage posted on social media showed supporters battling to get past lines of stewards and police as the atmosphere turned ugly in the hours before kick-off. While some fans shown in the videos appeared to get past the fences and towards the venue, Wembley officials insisted there had been no breach of stadium security. A spokesperson for Wembley Stadium said: "We are dealing with an incident that occurred at the outer security perimeter area of the stadium, with support from police. "Safety measures were quickly activated in the relevant areas and there were no security breaches of people without tickets getting inside the stadium." The Metropolitan Police tweeted: "We supported the security teams at Wembley Stadium a short time ago with this incident. "Wembley security officials have confirmed there was no security breaches of people without tickets getting inside the stadium." The mood outside Wembley was growing febrile well before the 1900 GMT kick-off as thousands of fans gathered on Olympic Way. Some drunken fans were throwing beer cans and bottles as well as traffic cones, with red flares and fireworks set off. Social distancing was ignored as maskless supporters congregated in large groups on the concrete approach to the stadium. England has been gripped by Euro fever since Gareth Southgate's side booked the country's first major final appearance for 55 years. The Three Lions are aiming to win a first trophy since the 1966 World Cup. With coronavirus restrictions still in place, the final capacity at Wembley has been limited to 67,500, with around 7,500 seats reserved for Italy fans. NBA: Two fans banned for spitting, pouring popcorn on players

NEW YORK (REUTERS) - Two fans have been banned indefinitely from NBA arenas for separate incidents during Wednesday's playoff games after inappropriate behaviour towards Atlanta Hawks' Trae Young and Washington Wizards' Russell Westbrook. The New York Knicks said on Thursday (May 27) that a fan who had spit on Young in the fourth quarter has been banned from Madison Square Garden indefinitely. "This was completely unacceptable and will not be tolerated in our venue. We have turned the information over to the appropriate authorities," the Knicks said in a statement, while apologising to Young and the Hawks. Meanwhile, the Philadelphia 76ers revoked a fan's season ticket with immediate effect and banned him from all events at the Wells Fargo Centre indefinitely after he poured popcorn on Westbrook. The Wizards guard was limping to the locker room with an ankle injury in the fourth quarter and was showered with popcorn by a fan seated above the tunnel. The incident occurred with 10 minutes left in the game and a furious Westbrook had to be held back by staff and security guards. "We apologise to Russell Westbrook and the Washington Wizards for being subjected to this type of unacceptable and disrespectful behaviour. There is no place for it in our sport or arena," the 76ers said. Westbrook called for more protection for the players, saying there were numerous instances where fans in the stands felt they were "untouchable". "I wouldn't come up to me on the street and throw popcorn on my head because you know what happens," Westbrook said. "Obviously, I have learned to look the other way. But to a certain extent, you can't just keep looking the other way. There has to be some penalties or something to put in place where fans just can't come to the games and do and say as they please." The NBA urged fans to show respect for players and officials and said it will vigorously enforce an enhanced code of conduct to ensure a "safe and respectful environment for all involved".

Football: Tottenham slump to defeat by Villa as European hopes fade

LONDON (REUTERS) - Tottenham Hotspur's European hopes were dealt a huge blow as their final Premier League home game of the season ended in a dispiriting 2-1 defeat by Aston Villa on Wednesday (May 19). Striker Harry Kane's uncertain future at the club has left Tottenham fans wearing a frown in the past week but the 10,000 fans back inside Tottenham's stadium were buoyed when Steven Bergwijn gave them an eighth-minute lead with a powerful finish. Just like Tottenham's season, however, optimism quickly faded after Sergio Reguilon's horrible sliced own goal after 20 minutes gifted Villa an equaliser out of the blue. Another Reguilon mistake allowed Ollie Watkins to fire Villa ahead and Tottenham's confidence drained away with the visitors squandering opportunities to increase their lead. After months without being allowed into the stadium, Tottenham fans chanted against club chairman Daniel Levy and booed their team off at halftime. Kane, in what could be his final home game for the club, was a subdued figure although he did force Emiliano Martinez into a second-half save while Gareth Bale came off the bench to try to liven up Tottenham's attack. Villa were worthy winners, though, and wasted several good chances while substitute Carney Chukwuemeka hit the base of the post in stoppage time. Tottenham, who face a tough final game away at Leicester City on Sunday, are on 59 points in sixth place, the same as West Ham United who will move above them later on Wednesday if they avoid defeat at West Bromwich Albion. Football: Manchester United held by Fulham despite Cavani gem as fans return

LONDON (AFP) - Edinson Cavani welcomed Manchester United fans back to Old Trafford with a stunning strike, but relegated Fulham recovered to rescue a 1-1 draw, while Chelsea and Leicester prepared for their top four showdown later on Tuesday (May 18). Supporters have been allowed to return to Premier League matches this week for the first time since December. A limited number of fans had attended the League Cup final and the FA Cup final in April and May respectively, as well as one of the FA Cup semi-finals. All of those matches were staged at Wembley, but the Premier League had delayed the last two rounds of fixtures to take advantage of the UK's easing of coronavirus restrictions. A limited crowd of 10,000 United fans were present at Old Trafford, while 8,000 Southampton supporters were allowed into St Mary's for their 2-0 defeat against Leeds. It was the first time supporters have been allowed inside Old Trafford for a match since March 8, 2020, although several hundred broke into the stadium earlier this month in protest at United's owners the Glazer family and their role in the failed European Super League plan. That ugly invasion and clashes with police outside prompted the postponement of United's match against Liverpool later the same day, while there were more protests before the rearranged game on Thursday. The return of fans to Old Trafford was surprisingly peaceful despite fears of more disruption, although many wore green and yellow scarves in the colours of United's predecessors Newton Heath, which became a symbol of protests against the Glazers when they bought the club in 2005. Some held up signs reading "Glazers Out" and chanted against the Americans, but the discontent was drowned out by songs of praise for Cavani in the 15th minute. Bruno Fernandes flicked David De Gea's long ball into Cavani's path and the Uruguay striker, spotting Alphonse Areola off his line, lofted a gorgeous 40-yard chip over the Fulham keeper. Cavani had to wait for VAR to confirm he was onside before he could take the applause for his first goal in front of United fans at Old Trafford. Unfortunately for Cavani, Fernandes had already been given United's goal of the season award for his strike against Everton. De Gea was back in goal in place of Dean Henderson in what could be the Spaniard's farewell appearance at Old Trafford amid reports he could leave in the close-season. But De Gea was beaten in the 76th minute when Joe Bryan headed the equaliser from Bobby Decordova-Reid's cross. Second placed United, now without a win in three games, suffered another blow ahead of the Europa League final against Villarreal on May 26 when Scotland midfielder Scott McTominay limped off injured. United captain Harry Maguire is already racing to be fit for the final after suffering an ankle problem. At St Mary's, Patrick Bamford ruined the return of fans as the Leeds striker slotted home in the 73rd minute. Tyler Roberts bagged Leeds' second goal in the 90th minute to clinch the points for Marcelo Bielsa's side. Later on Tuesday, Chelsea face a do or die clash with Leicester in the race to qualify for next season's Champions League via a top four berth. Thomas Tuchel's fourth placed side are two points behind third placed Leicester, with both teams having two games left. Leicester have already inflicted a painful blow on Chelsea after beating them 1-0 in the FA Cup final on Saturday. Fifth placed Liverpool are only one point behind Chelsea and also have two games left, including Wednesday's trip to Burnley. If Chelsea miss out on a top four place they could still qualify for the Champions League by winning the final of this season's competition against Manchester City in Porto on May 29. Champions City travel to Brighton in Tuesday's other game.

Football: Protesting fans stay away from Old Trafford ring of steel ahead of Leicester match

MANCHESTER (REUTERS) - Manchester United erected steel barriers and beefed up security at their Old Trafford ground ahead of Tuesday's (May 11) Premier League match against Leicester City in an attempt to avoid further violent protests against their American owners. United's game against Liverpool last week was postponed after fans, calling for the removal of the club's owners, the Glazer family, clashed with police and broke into the stadium, entering the field of play. There was no sign of fans or protesters around the stadium before Tuesday's game but there was a heavy police and security presence around the venue. Social media posts suggested protesters were instead looking to Thursday's rescheduled game with Liverpool for a further demonstration of their opposition to the Glazers. Steel barriers were erected around the main entrance to the ground and there were increased numbers of private security staff and local police. The Glazers have faced fan opposition since they took over the club in a heavily leveraged deal in 2005, but the protests were reignited last month due to the club's involvement in the attempt to create a breakaway European Super League. In response to the protests and open letters from fans, United owner and co-chairman Joel Glazer wrote to supporters last week to say he is willing to discuss increasing fan shareholding in the club as part of a wider consultation with them. "We want to work together to come up with an ambitious package of measures which will transform our relationship with fans and strengthen the club for the long-term," he wrote. "In this spirit, we will reach out to members of the forum to schedule a meeting in which I shall participate as soon as possible after the final game of the season," he added. Tuesday's game with Leicester is part of a crammed schedule for United, who beat Aston Villa on Sunday. With an eye on the clash with their local rivals Liverpool in 48 hours, manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer named a second-string side to face the Foxes.

Football: Scrapped Man United-Liverpool game rearranged for May 13

LONDON (REUTERS) - Manchester United’s postponed home Premier League match against Liverpool has been rearranged for May 13, the league said on Wednesday (May 5). The match was called off on Sunday after United fans protesting against the club’s American owners, the Glazer family, stormed into the stadium which was closed to spectators due to Covid-19 restrictions. The rescheduling of the game means United must play two games in the space of two days as their home game against Leicester City has been moved forward a day to May 11. United’s penultimate league game at home to Fulham has been scheduled for May 18, allowing the club to host a limited number of fans in line with the government’s plan to ease lockdown restrictions in England. Liverpool’s trip to West Bromwich Albion will take place on May 16 as planned. Football: Manchester United to punish fans who committed criminal acts in Glazer protests

MANCHESTER (REUTERS) - Manchester United will punish fans who committed criminal acts during the protests on Sunday which led to the Premier League game against Liverpool being postponed, the club said on Monday (May 3). United fans protesting against the club's American owners, the Glazer family, stormed into the stadium which was closed to fans due to Covid-19 restrictions. "The majority of our fans have and will condemn criminal damage, along with any violence towards club staff, police or other fans, and these now become a police matter," United said in a statement. "The club has no desire to see peaceful protestors punished, but will work with the police to identify those involved in criminal activity, and will also issue its own sanctions to any season ticket holder or member identified, per the published sanctions policy," the statement added. A flare was thrown at the broadcasters podium as fans ran on to the field and protesters clashed with police outside the ground. Greater Manchester Police (GMP) said six officers were injured during the demonstrations, with one suffering a fractured eye socket, and another sustained a wound to his face, following bottles and cans being thrown from the crowd. A third officer was dragged and kicked. GMP said a 28-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the protests and added that it was "reviewing all obtainable evidence" to identify the organisers of the demonstration and those responsible for assaulting officers. "The behaviour shown at this protest was absolutely atrocious," GMP Assistant Chief Constable Nick Bailey said in a statement. "Officers were just trying to do their job and facilitate a peaceful protest." Strong feeling The Premier League said it recognised the strength of feeling among fans. "We are committed to maintaining close dialogue with supporters and their representatives, as we work with The FA and government to identify solutions, but ask that all protests are peaceful," the Premier League said in a statement. "The actions of a few clubs cannot be allowed to create such division and disruption. We are determined to establish the truth of what happened and hold those clubs accountable for their decisions and actions." The fan protests against the Glazers, which have taken place since they bought the club in 2005, have been reignited since United's involvement in the attempt to create a breakaway European Super League. "I don't think it's a good idea to have disruptive behaviour, demonstrations of that kind, but on the other hand I do understand people's strength of feeling," Johnson told reporters. Greater Manchester mayor Andy Burnham also expressed support for the aims of the protesters. "I fully understand the long-standing concerns of Manchester United supporters about both the ownership and financing of their club and the wider running of football," he said. "It is important to make clear that the majority of supporters made their protest peacefully... however, there is no excuse for the actions of a minority who injured police officers and endangered the safety of others." No decision has yet been made on the rescheduling of the match or about any sanctions. "Information on the rescheduling of the game and any possible implication on other fixtures will be announced after discussion and agreement with the Premier League," United said.
