‘My patients are my family’: Healthcare worker awarded for going beyond the call of duty

SINGAPORE - Mr Ng, 80, is a dementia patient who suffered a stroke last year. He was depressed and refused to talk to anyone, including his wife and daughter who visited him daily at Jurong Community Hospital. Senior healthcare assistant Ilandari Deva Nishantha made the effort to talk to Mr Ng tenderly whenever he sponged, changed diapers and fed him, and to greet him in Mandarin - Mr Ng's mother tongue. Mr Nishantha, a Sri Lankan, ended up being the first person that Mr Ng spoke to after three months of not communicating with anyone. It moved Mr Ng's daughter to tears when she witnessed it. Mr Nishantha, 35, won the Exemplary Service Excellence Award at the Public Sector Transformation Awards 2021 on Friday (July 30). The ceremony was held virtually. He has been working at Jurong Community Hospital for five years, and has 15 years of healthcare experience under his belt. He moved from Sri Lanka to Singapore in 2006. Mr Nishantha said he was inspired to pursue a career in healthcare when, as a 15-year-old, he saw how his grandmother, then a nurse, tended to his mother and helped her recover from a fever. "The way that my grandmother took care of and communicated with my mother really touched my heart," he said. At Mr Ng's daughter's request, Mr Nishantha visited his former patient at home after he was discharged, as Mr Ng was in low spirits. He did this on his own time, outside work hours. Going beyond the call of duty, he shaved Mr Ng's face and changed his diapers during his visits, teaching the family's helper how to do so as well. Senior healthcare assistant Ilandari Deva Nishantha won the Exemplary Service Excellence Award at the Public Sector Transformation Awards 2021. ST PHOTO: TIMOTHY DAVID Migrant workers hospitalised for Covid-19 also benefited from Mr Nishantha's personal touch, when he was deployed to Ng Teng Fong General Hospital from around May to July last year. "I could sense that they were feeling down physically and mentally," he said. To make their hospital stay more comfortable, he went to Little India to buy soap for them, as well as other necessities such as nail clippers, slippers and Tiger Balm. He paid for these out of his own pocket. "As a foreigner in Singapore, I really miss my family. When I take care of my patients, it's like looking after my family," Mr Nishantha said. "I'm really happy to work in Singapore as a healthcare worker, and I'm really thankful to my managers and fellow colleagues for supporting me."

Contact:Shimeng Liu, PeanutmediaE: liushimeng@czgmcn.comURL: www.Peanutmedia.com Copyright 2021 亚太商讯. Help pours in for siblings with rare disorder in Singapore

SINGAPORE - All three of Mr David Lang's children were born healthy, zipping through development milestones as they grew up. Justina, the eldest, could name 100 objects in a picture book at the age of one. Timothy, the middle child, would try and read everything he could. Titus, the youngest, could solve a Primary 2 mathematics problem when he was in kindergarten. But as they each grew older, they started falling more frequently when running, spoke less, and had seizures. Initially, Mr Lang, 63, and his wife, Mrs Lang Loo Geok, 62, suspected attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. Doctors attributed the falling to clumsiness and teachers thought they had behavioural problems. But it turned out to be Niemann-Pick disease type C, which causes cognitive and physical functions to degenerate. There are an estimated 500 cases diagnosed worldwide, according to the National Niemann-Pick Disease Foundation. It is fatal and incurable. In 2004, Timothy died at the age of 10. Titus, now 24, and Justina, 30, are unable to walk, stand, sit without support, talk, eat, drink or swallow their saliva. They are tube-fed and breathe through tracheostomy tubes. Because they require round-the-clock care, Mr Lang and his wife take turns waking up every few hours to clear their secretions and change their positions. Two domestic helpers, Ms Thelma Mendez Ortega, 39, and Ms Jocelyn Nuguit, 34, who have been with the family for five and 10 years respectively, care for the children and do household chores. Every month, the family needs about $7,000 to $9,000 for medication, utility fees, medical check-ups, and the helpers' salaries. But Mr Lang is the sole breadwinner and his take-home pay as a lecturer at Singapore Bible College is $4,600. He is also on a year-by-year employment contract and can be asked to retire with a few months' notice. Then, Ms Thrina Low, 56, the owner of Bakery Brera & Fine Foods, stepped in. Ms Low heard of the Lang family through Christian website Salt&Light in 2018. She thought of Mr Lang when she wanted to feature fathers who are caregivers on her bakery's social media platforms for Father's Day last month. After she found out the family lives near the bakery in Empress Road, she visited them regularly, bringing pastries and other essentials dropped off by her customers. The bakery hires staff with special needs and mental illnesses. The Lang family at Disney World in Orlando, Florida, in 1997. PHOTO: DAVID LANG Since featuring them on her bakery's social media platforms, donations have poured in. As at Tuesday, cash donations had surpassed $250,000. This is on top of groceries, food, cookware and electronic items like laptops and phones donated by more than 2,000 people, many of whom gave anonymously. Said Ms Low: "David is a very resilient man and his story was something I could not imagine anyone going through. I was very happy to chip in since I had been wanting to help anyway." Said Mr Lang: "Most of those who give do not know us or have never met us and yet they gave so sacrificially at a time when many suffer loss of income or face uncertain futures." One of the donors, Ms Ashley Kwong, 36, raised $1,600 with nine friends. She had asked that they donate the money they were going to spend on her birthday to the Langs instead. In carrier parents, the risk of having an affected child is 25 per cent for each pregnancy." Another donor, who wanted to be known only as Mr Bert, 40, said he donated $50 and plans to make monthly contributions. He said: "I don't want it to be a one-off thing but a continuous donation. Hopefully, with all this money, we can ease David's burden as he approaches retirement." Said Mr Lang: "We are deeply grateful to every single one who gave. Basketball: Lakers legend Elgin Baylor dies aged 86, says team

LOS ANGELES (AFP) - Los Angeles Lakers legend Elgin Baylor, widely regarded as one of the greatest players never to win a championship after playing and losing in eight NBA Finals, died on Monday (March 22), the franchise announced. He was 86. The 11-time Hall-of-Famer, a dominant force for the Lakers during 14 seasons in the league between 1958 and 1971, passed away peacefully surrounded by his wife Elaine and daughter Krystal, the Lakers said. "Elgin was the love of my life and my best friend," Elaine Baylor said in a statement released by the team. "And like everyone else, I was in awe of his immense courage, dignity and the time he gave to all fans. At this time we ask that I and our family be allowed to mourn his passing in privacy." Baylor was chosen with the top pick in the 1958 draft when the Lakers were based in Minneapolis. He made an instant impact, averaging 24.9 points, 15 rebounds and 4.1 assists in his debut season to romp to Rookie of the Year honours. It marked the beginning of an illustrious playing career with the Lakers which ended after a handful of games in his 14th season in 1971 because of knee problems. The 6ft 5in (1.96m) small forward finished his career with 23,149 points at an average of 27.4 per game, along with 11,463 rebounds (13.5), and 3,650 assists (4.3). Yet although he was pivotal in turning the Lakers into a dominant force in the 1960s, he was never able to crown his legacy with a championship. He reached eight NBA Finals with the Lakers but lost all of them, including three seven-game series defeats to the Boston Celtics. Baylor's NBA Finals appearances however did include a memorable 61-point outing against the Celtics in 1962, which remains the record for the highest ever score by an individual in a NBA Finals game. In a twist of fate, the Lakers finally won a championship in the 1971-1972 season - when Baylor had retired through injury after only nine games. The Lakers later gave Baylor a championship ring in recognition of his contribution to the team which he sold for US$132,000 (S$176,841) in 2013. "Elgin was THE superstar of his era - his many accolades speak to that," Lakers Governor Jeanie Buss said in a statement on Monday. "He was one of the few Lakers players whose career spanned from Minneapolis to Los Angeles. But more importantly he was a man of great integrity, even serving his country as a US Army reservist, often playing for the Lakers only during his weekend pass." Baylor's retired No.22 jersey hangs in the rafters of the Staples Center and in 2018 a statue of him was unveiled outside the arena. "He will always be part of the Lakers legacy," Buss said. "On behalf of the entire Lakers family, I'd like to send my thoughts, prayers and condolences to Elaine and the Baylor family." Baylor remained in the NBA after his playing career, coaching the New Orleans Jazz between 1974 and 1979. In 1986 he joined the Los Angeles Clippers as vice president of basketball operations, remaining there until his resignation in 2008.

SINGAPORE (THE NEW PAPER) - A freelance balloon sculptor who died after being hit by a lorry near her home in Jurong two weeks ago received an outpouring of condolences after news of her tragic accident broke. Among those who paid tribute to 52-year-old Or Cheng Khim was Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong. Ms Or's younger sister, Ms Samantha Or, 42, told The New Paper that their father was surprised when he opened the letter addressed to him last Tuesday. In the letter, PM Lee offered his condolences and recalled how he had met the late Ms Or twice when she had helped build balloon walls for private events in 2018 and 2019, the younger Ms Or added. PM Lee also acknowledged the family's decision to donate her organs. "My father felt happy that his daughter was recognised by the Prime Minister," the Singapore Armed Forces defence executive officer added. TNP reported last week that the late Ms Or, who was also a childcare teacher, had been on the way home to surprise her son with sushi when the accident happened. Her son Ng Song Ching, 17, said the family had agreed to donate his mother's organs because it was what she would have wanted. According to Chinese-language newspaper Shin Min Daily News, Senior Minister Tharman Shanmugaratnam visited the wake to offer his condolences to the family. Mr Shanmugaratnam, the Member of Parliament representing the area where Ms Or lived, also offered his assistance to the family, including contacting her 15-year-old daughter's secondary school principal. The younger Ms Or, who said that the chairman of the residents' network of the executive condominium her sister lived in had reached out to offer assistance, added that her family is grateful for the support that has poured in. She said: "We are touched that Singaporeans are remembering my sister. "Not just as someone who met a tragic accident but as the kind and helpful person that she was." Funeral director charged with culpable homicide of ex-boyfriend

SINGAPORE - A 38-year-old woman was charged on Thursday (Dec 3) over her alleged involvement in the death of her former boyfriend. Alverna Cher Siu Pin, who appeared in court via video-link, faces a charge of culpable homicide not amounting to murder. On Thursday, Cher told the court that she was a single mother of two daughters and the sole breadwinner of her family, which includes her parents. The body of Cher's 32-year-old former boyfriend was found on May 16 at about 5.30pm at a carpark in Bedok Reservoir Road, according to a police statement on Wednesday.
