Rovanperä crowned youngest ever champion with TOYOTA GAZOO Racing

TOKYO, Oct 3, 2022 - (JCN Newswire via SEAPRWire.com) - Kalle Rovanpera has become the youngest ever winner of an FIA World Rally Championship title* at the age of just 22 years and one day, after the TOYOTA GAZOO Racing World Rally Team driver and his co-driver Jonne Halttunen secured their maiden crowns in style with victory at Rally New Zealand.Taking the title in only his third season competing at rallying's highest level, Rovanpera is more than five years younger than the previous record holder Colin McRae was when he won the championship in 1995.Rovanpera has been the benchmark driver in the first year of the WRC's new hybrid Rally1 regulations, and his victory in New Zealand is his sixth of the season in the GR YARIS Rally1 HYBRID. Having led the standings since winning round two in Sweden in February, he has now clinched the title with two rallies remaining. His is the eighth WRC title to be won by a Toyota driver and the fourth in as many years. Rovanpera is the first Finnish driver to win the championship for 20 years and the first to do so driving a car built in Finland.Outstanding speed in difficult weather conditions has been a key attribute to Rovanpera's driving in 2022 and was also central to his victory in New Zealand, where the smooth gravel roads were hosting the WRC for the first time in a decade. After finishing the longest day of the rally on Friday in mixed conditions in fourth overall, he excelled on a soaking wet Saturday on his 22nd birthday to take over the lead and build an advantage of almost half a minute.Sunday brought further wet weather for the final four stages but Rovanpera managed his lead ahead of the rally-ending Power Stage. Only a top-four time there was needed to secure the two extra bonus points he required for the championship, but he nonetheless recorded the fastest time - the seventh occasion he has topped the Power Stage this season. The outgoing champion Sebastien Ogier completed a one-two finish for the team together with co-driver Benjamin Veillas on their fourth start of the 2022 campaign. Part of a close four-way fight for the lead earlier in the rally, they played an important role for their team-mates by taking points away from their championship rivals. The one-two finish overall, plus the first and third fastest times from the Power Stage, ensures that the team increases its manufacturers' championship lead to 81 points with 104 left available. For more information, visit https://toyotagazooracing.com/wrc/release/2022/rd11-day4/. Hitachi Power Semiconductor Device Develops High-Voltage Motor Driver IC Products

TOKYO, Jun 7, 2022 - (JCN Newswire via SEAPRWire.com) - Hitachi Power Semiconductor Device, Ltd. (HPSD) has developed two High-Voltage Motor Driver ICs primarily for room air-conditioners. The single-chip IC products 'ECN30216' & 'ECN30624' are able to tolerate large variation of supply voltage. Both products possess the function of shutting down all the output devices when overvoltage is detected in the motor drive state and thereby achieves the withstanding voltage of 1,000V. "ECN30216" is mainly for the fan-motors used for in-room units of air-conditioners, and "ECN30624" is principally for those of exterior units. The products are to be shipped out as of Jun. 2022. Through providing these products, HPSD will globally support the energy- efficiency/energy-saving of home appliances including room air-conditioners in order to contribute to realizing Carbon-Free Society.Motor Driver IC 'ECN30216(Left)' & 'ECN30624(Right)'A High-Voltage Motor Driver IC is one of those components mounted on an inverter control board which keeps proper operation of motors installed in home appliances such as room air- conditioners or air-cleaners, and is indispensable power semiconductor device for highly efficient, energy-saving home appliances. On the other hand, in some areas where rapid increase of demand for inverter air-conditioners is expected, it is required to develop the power semiconductor devices which bear sizable fluctuation of power supply voltage. This time, HPSD has developed the High-Voltage Motor Driver IC having the withstanding voltage of 1000V which is realized by implementing the function to disable all the output devices which supply the driving power to the motor upon detecting excessive power supply voltage in the motor drive state. In addition, unique design of new upper arm(1) drive circuit has made it possible to include the capacitor inside the driver IC, eliminating two external capacitors required for conventional such products, and thereby saving space to improve customer's freedom of designing motor or inverter control board for home appliances.HPSD has supplied its power electronics products for Mobility application such as Traction, and EV so far, but is accelerating its development activities of the products having high environmental values for the realization of Carbon-Free Society. Cabby who hit and then drove into pedestrian jailed, disqualified from driving for 1 year

SINGAPORE - A taxi driver who hit a pedestrian's elbow with his car's side mirror drove into him again, as the man was trying to photograph the front side of the vehicle following the incident. On Monday (June 21), Michael Hui,also known as Kuswara Mahmud, was sentenced to four weeks' jail and a fine of $800. The 71-year-old has also been disqualified from driving for a year after his release. Deputy Public Prosecutor (DPP) Kelly Ho told the court that a couple with a young child were passengers in the taxi at the time of the incident. The court heard that on March 19, 2018, at about 9.30pm, Hui, who was a taxi driver with Transcab, drove to the drop-off point at the Intercontinental Singapore Robertson Quay and hit Mr Dirk Eduard Gustaaf Motman's right elbow with the taxi's side mirror. An argument followed and Mr Motman, then 53, told Hui that he was going to take a picture of the taxi and call the police. Hui told him tp go ahead, DPP Ho told the court. When Mr Motman, a Dutch national and permanent resident here, walked to the front of the stationary taxi, Hui suddenly accelerated and the taxi hit Mr Motman's legs. Mr Motman suffered a microfracture on his right knee and was treated with medication and physiotherapy. He was issued two months of medical leave as he had difficulty walking. DPP Ho noted that the act caused "public disquiet" as at least 10 people witnessed the incident. Hui's lawyer, Mr Vas Kumar, told the court that Hui has not been able to get his taxi licence renewed and drive for a long period of time, and that this has affected his livelihood and caused him to stay with a friend who can support him. He added that his client was truly sorry but could not afford to compensate the victim. Hui was unable to pay the $800 fine and will serve two days in jail in default. He began serving his sentence on Monday. The SIS ECU, ADS ECU, and ADX ECU also support over-the-air software updates, which expands the functionality and improves performance of Advanced Drive after vehicles are sold to users.Advanced driver assistance technologies are essential to helping drivers safely operate vehicles in driving scenarios. The products that DENSO newly developed support a system, Advanced Drive, which assists driving when driving on an expressway or other motor-vehicle-only roadway. With the Advanced Drive, by setting the destination in the navigation system, the on-board system will appropriately detect the situation, make decisions, and assist driving under the driver's supervision according to actual traffic conditions. It can keep the vehicle in its lane, maintain the distance from other vehicles, navigate a lane split, change lanes, and overtake other vehicles until leaving the roadway for the destination. With these new products, DENSO will contribute to advanced driver assistance technology that gives peace of mind to occupants and improves the safety of vehicles.Improved detection of the situation around the vehicle LiDAR and the Locator Telescopic Camera are able to detect large areas with high accuracy: both products can detect more than 200 meters ahead of a vehicle. The performance of DENSO's LiDAR is among the highest in the world. Long-range detection has been attained by increasing the output of the laser beam and the sensitivity of the beam-receiving sensor. A flat mirror is used for scanning to detect a wider angle. The Locator Telescopic Camera is equipped with two types of cameras, one for short distance and the other for long distance. It is characterized by a long imaging distance and a large number of pixels, which increases accuracy. The detection angle of the long-distance camera is narrowed to increase the number of pixels, producing clear distant images.Accurate identification of one's own vehicle position The SIS ECU provides information about the position of one's own vehicle and the driving course ahead, making it a key part of advanced driver assistance technology. The new product can obtain accurate information about one's own vehicle position in combination with position information from high-precision map data, the Global Navigation Satellite System and camera recognition information.High-speed processing of sensor informationThe ADS ECU and ADX ECU rapidly process information from sensors, such as LiDAR and cameras, monitoring the situation around the vehicle. To make this possible, it is necessary to obtain information from sensors in real time and process it in milliseconds. The new products have multiple System on Chips and microcomputers that achieve at least double the processing performance compared with conventional in-vehicle ECUs. They play the role of brain that controls the vehicle instead of the driver.DENSO remains committed to developing technology for advanced driver assistance and realizing safe and flexible mobility for all people around the world, including drivers and pedestrians.About DENSO CorporationDENSO is a $47.6 billion global mobility supplier that develops advanced technology and components for nearly every vehicle make and model on the road today. Man admits to threatening bus driver with knife after being asked to wear his mask properly

SINGAPORE - Upset that he was asked to wear his mask properly while boarding an SBS bus, Gan Wee Yeow whipped out a knife and threatened the bus driver, not the first time the 50-year-old brandished weapons in public. On Wednesday (March 24), Gan pleaded guilty to six charges - three for criminal intimidation and one each for voluntarily causing hurt, possessing offensive weapons without lawful purpose or authority, and mischief. District Judge Janet Wang will take into consideration seven other charges when sentencing him at a later date. Two are for possessing offensive weapons unlawfully and another two are for dishonest misappropriation of property. The remaining charges comprise one count each of using criminal force, mischief and failing to wear a mask at all times while outside his ordinary place of residence. Gan's threatening behaviour occurred over a one-month period last year. On July 27, he got into a dispute with a Gojek driver in East Coast Road when he could not pay the full fare for the ride. He threatened the driver with a hammer he was carrying and used it to damage the car's centre console. Three days later, Gan threatened a Certis officer with a hammer at the alighting berth of Woodlands Temporary Bus Interchange. The officer, who spotted Gan standing at the berth with a few items scattered on the floor in front of him, had told him he was not allowed to wait in the area. The court heard that Gan reacted aggressively and started shouting at the officer. He later approached him with the hammer held high and kicked him in the thigh. The incident involving the bus driver happened about a month later on Aug 26. The bus driver noticed that he was talking on the phone with his mask pulled down, and told him to wear it in the correct manner. Gan, who was boarding the bus, responded by hurling vulgarities at the driver. He then threatened the driver with a knife. The victim pressed the panic alarm button on the bus and returned to the bus interchange. He was found with a knife and a penknife, which were seized. But three days later, he threatened another individual with a knife at a coffee shop in Yishun. The victim, who was working at the coffee shop then, had informed Gan that his drink - which he had bought earlier - was ready for collection. "The accused perceived the victim to have rushed him and was offended as a result," said Deputy Public Prosecutor Eugene Teh. The staff member later called the police. He said he would be unable to renew his licence as a security officer - which will expire in May - if he is jailed. The court heard that he had been working in that role since June 2016. District Judge Wang called for a report assessing Gan's suitability for a mandatory treatment order (MTO). Offenders given an MTO will undergo treatment for their mental condition in lieu of jail time. Gan's case is expected to be heard again on April 8.

During the period under review, the COVID-19 pandemic (the "Pandemic") has triggered the demand for healthcare products worldwide, which was translated into increased orders for portable healthcare devices and related applications for the Group's PMOLED display driver ICs, and thereby has changed the mix of the AD products. The total unit shipments of the AD products during the period under review registered a double-digit growth of around 82.2% to approximately 245.8 million units. To capitalize on the growing potential of smart home appliances market under the rising trend of Artificial Intelligence of Things ("AIoT"), the Group has successfully achieved related design-in projects, including smart electric toothbrush and smart thermostat electric kettle, etc. In view of dynamic shifts in global overseas retail market conditions, the Group shifted its focus to promote its new bistable display driver IC for medium-sized ESL panels of 2.6 inches to 4 inches used at mega stores in the second half of 2020, eyeing on the markets of Europe and the U.S. Over the years, the Group has made significant progress through strategic collaborations with leading companies. In the reporting period, the Group has received orders that paved the way for applying mini-LED technology to mass production. The Group's Large Display ("LD") products include large panel TFT LCD display driver ICs developed for TVs, monitors and other applications. Revenue from TVs products had also slowed down in the first quarter of 2020 due to the Pandemic, which was rebounded in the second quarter owing to strong work-from-home demand. At the same time, high speed point-to-point ("P2P") display driver IC for the 165Hz high refresh rate gaming monitor and 8K TV markets was launched during the reporting period. The Group has developed a foundry-sourcing strategy, so as to cope with capacity constraint of LD product lines and facilitate its future business growth. In addition to AD and LD products, the Group also offers another range of products, which includes: Mobile Display ("MD") products such as In-Cell TDDI ICs, TFT display driver ICs and MIPI bridge ICs; and Mobile Touch ("MT") products including LCD touch controller ICs (Out-Cell/On-Cell), etc. The unit shipments of this category of products saw an increase of approximately 6.8% year-on-year to around 54.7 million units. The revenue target of this category of products was achieved by seizing the opportunities in this period. Notwithstanding the Pandemic has impacted the demand of consumer electronic products worldwide in 2020, the demand for mobile devices in China and the consumer sentiment have gradually recovered starting from the second half of 2020, which ultimately helped boost revenue from MD in relation to TDDI and DDI.Furthermore, demand derived from specific customer segments, such as video games related products, in contrast boomed due to the Pandemic. The MT IC, the product line which supported game consoles, was one of the product lines that most benefited in the reporting period. As a result, the sales forecast for the reporting period could be achieved in conjunction with a number of design wins in these segments.ProspectsDespite the fact that the lingering uncertainties in the global economy and supply chain may continue to weigh on the Group's business as a whole, the AD business is expected to continue its strong growth. A number of new products and design win projects are expected to start contributing to the Group's revenue. For instance, its custom ICs are going to be widely used in digital signage benefiting both the AD and MD businesses. For AD products, the Group's key innovation of the PMOLED (Touch + Display) TDDI IC, SSD7317, is anticipated to enter mass production in smart home appliances and contribute to the revenue stream. The Group also strives to capitalize on the growth potentials of smart home appliances and AIoT with grayscale displays. Meanwhile, Group's bistable display driver IC business, bolstered by the constant development in retail automation and wide commercial applications spanning across logistics and signage demonstration, is set to continue its strong growth momentum in 2021. The Group has put in efforts in developing a new generation bistable color display IC that supports multiple colors, so as to unleash new potential for business growth. The Group's resources will be devoted to working with market leading micro-LED/mini-LED panel manufacturers to develop more new ICs with technological breakthroughs plus fulfilling the market needs. These new products are expected to be launched in the first half of 2021.The Group's LD driver IC business, the P2P product focusing on gaming monitors will be in demand with high growth potential in 2021. The major challenge is the capacity support on wafers for the overall large size DDI products. The Group will strive to fully utilize the wafer usage and backend capacity, not only to meet the needs of customers, but also achieve the Group's long-term business goals. For MD business, the Group's MIPI, TDDI and DDI products will be in demand due to the signs of China's economic recovery and 5G adoption. Customers have placed orders early with a view to securing the provision of support. MD business will continue to grow and to prosper with enhanced capacity and the support from the cohesive factory partners in 2021. Mr. Raymond Wang, Chief Executive Officer of Solomon Systech (International) Limited, said, "Although economies worldwide have been impacted by the Pandemic, thanks to the contribution efforts of our employees and management team, we have experienced a business turnaround, that has been welcomed by our stakeholders, at the same time increasing average gross profit margin and a decrease in operating expenses. In line with our business development strategy, we adopted the Chinese name 'Solomon Systech (International) Limited' as the dual foreign name of the Company in late 2020. The Chinese name 'Solomon Systech (International) Limited' is indicative of our core businesses, and highlights the Company's leading position within the semiconductor industry. Going forward, we believe the unique positioning of our Company will enable us to gain an advantage as we face current economic circumstances. Staying in step with today's dynamic high-tech revolution, we have created a tactical plan on stimulating the developments of micro-LED, Electronic Shelf Label, high-speed interface and the P2P display driver IC for the high-end 8K TV markets in the years ahead. With our strong balance sheet, we are well placed to successfully overcome the current economic downturn period and to take advantage of new opportunities in the future. We will continue to lead the semiconductor industry by optimising stakeholders' interests and maximise value for them."Media Enquiry:Carol HuiCorporate Communications ManagerSolomon Systech (International) Limited Tel: (852) 2207 1672 / 6177 7344Fax: (852) 2207 1372Email: carolhui@solomon-systech.comIvy ChenAccount ManagerPorda Havas International Finance Communications GroupTel: (852) 3150 6720 / 6355 8773Fax: (852) 3150 6728Email: i.chen@pordahavas.com Copyright 2021 ACN Newswire. Ricciardo will face pressure, says Norris

LONDON • Lando Norris has warned his new McLaren team-mate Daniel Ricciardo that he will be under pressure to deliver this Formula One season. British driver Norris will race alongside seven-time grand prix winner Ricciardo following the Australian's move from Renault. After finishing third last year despite not winning a race since 2012, McLaren hope to close the yawning gap to champions Mercedes even though chief executive Zak Brown has admitted challenging for the constructors' championship "would be unrealistic". In his first two seasons, Norris was evenly matched with former teammate Carlos Sainz. Following the Spaniard's switch to Ferrari to replace Sebastian Vettel, the 21-year-old believes he can keep up with Ricciardo, who is 10 years his senior. "I don't think the arrival of Daniel will make it any harder for me," said Norris as McLaren became the first team to launch their 2021 car on Monday. "I don't believe Daniel is a big step above anything that Carlos has achieved, and there is more pressure on him because he has been in F1 for longer and he has to come in and perform very well. "It is harder for someone to go up against a much younger driver than it is for a younger driver going up against someone with more experience. "I have more responsibility on me now than the past few years to lead the team. It is a big opportunity for me and I will work very hard on doing that." Both drivers are set to jostle to become McLaren's No. 1 driver. Ricciardo has added incentive to get back on track after recording just two top-three finishes at Renault - rebranded as Alpine in the new term - following his surprise decision to quit Red Bull in 2018. "I feel like this team has a bunch of momentum and there is good stability," he said. "When I first talked to McLaren in 2018, there were still quite a few moving parts. "They have established that now and I am fitting into the puzzle as opposed to putting it all together." Meanwhile, two-time F1 champion and former McLaren driver Fernando Alonso has left hospital after having surgery on a fractured jaw suffered in a road accident while cycling last week. The Spaniard, who will make his return to the sport with Alpine after three years away, is expected to be fit for the start of the season in Bahrain on March 28. AGENCE FRANCE-PRESSE

Transport workers in S’pore recognised for kind acts

SINGAPORE - Taxi driver Henry Koh, 44, was returning to his vehicle after getting coffee in West Coast last June when he was approached by a migrant worker who was clearly agitated. The worker said his friend was extremely unwell, pointing to another migrant worker on the other side of the car park who was barely on his feet. The ComfortDelGro cabby soon learnt that the man was suffering from an acute asthma attack. Without hesitation, Mr Koh immediately helped the sick man into his taxi and sped off to the National University Hospital. "I was a bit worried at first because then there was the Covid-19 outbreak in dormitories," the cabby told The Straits Times. "But I quickly put that out of my mind and did the right thing." Mr Koh did not charge for the ride, and made sure the sick man was being treated before leaving the hospital. The cabby was among a record 530 transport service staff who had their kind acts in the past year recognised during the 21st National Kindness Award Transport Gold ceremony at the Land Transport Authority auditorium in Hampshire Road on Wednesday (Jan 27). The award is given to those in the sector who were commended by members of the public for their kind acts. Eight commuters were also recognised on Wednesday, including the two men who had intervened when an SBS Transit bus driver was assaulted last September. Lives were saved in the case of some award recipients, such as that of Mr Koh and SMRT assistant station manager Suhaila Ismail. Madam Suhaila, 42, was manning her station at Bugis when a pregnant woman suffered acute cramps on the platform. Unable to contact her husband at the time, the woman was at a loss. Madam Suhaila accompanied her to KK Women's and Children's Hospital, and two weeks ago, received word that the commuter's seven-month old baby boy was healthy and well. "She came back to the station and said I had probably saved her and her baby's life," said Madam Suhaila. Another award recipient, Mr Azhiem Syed Ismail, who has worked for SBS Transit for about 2½ years, was on duty at Boon Keng MRT station in Oct 2019 - not his usual post at Chinatown - when an elderly man in his 70s fell down and injured himself on the escalator. A commuter had pushed the emergency button to stop the escalator and reported the incident to him, which led him to track down the man who was limping outside the station. He had refused to wait for help, walking home with bags of groceries about 100 metres away from the station. Armed with the station's first aid kit, the 32-year-old bandaged the elderly man's elbow and shin. "I've been working at the ticket office for almost 23 years and then got the award. My daughter is very proud of me," Mdm Zubaidah said. Minister for Transport Ong Ye Kung, who was guest of honour at Wednesday's ceremony, spoke of the importance of such awards He said: "An abundance of good things often goes unnoticed, a small ounce of bad things is disproportionate in impact. "Because kindness begets kindness, because bad news travel by itself, good deeds need to be broadcast as loudly as possible." Mr Ong added: "My hope is that in time to come, we will not need to celebrate acts of kindness. Kindness should live in each and all of us, and every kind act will not go unnoticed, and will be appreciated." Duo step in to protect bus driver assaulted in mask dispute

Two men who rushed into a bus to tackle a man who was assaulting the driver were presented an award for their public-spiritedness yesterday. Mr Muhammad Mu'tasim Kassim was walking along Pasir Ris Drive 1 on Sept 15 last year when he saw a group of students alighting at a bus stop. "I found it a bit strange because those students usually do not alight at that particular bus stop," said the 26-year-old University of Buffalo student. He decided to approach the bus and check. He saw a passenger berating a bus driver, and then punching him. The assailant had boarded bus service 21 two stops earlier without wearing a mask. When the 39-year-old bus driver told him to put on his mask, the commuter got angry. He grabbed the bus driver's neck and collar and threw punches at him after the driver stopped the bus in front of Block 210 to wait for the police to arrive. Meanwhile, Mr Clement Tan, 29, a financial consultant, was waiting at the bus stop when the bus pulled up. When he saw the passenger assaulting the driver, he rushed into the bus to intervene, together with Mr Mu'tasim and another man who has not been identified. The three men pulled the assailant out of the bus and subdued him. While restraining the man, they discovered that he had a knife on him, which they quickly removed, said the police in a statement yesterday. The man was subsequently handed over to police officers and later charged with voluntarily causing hurt and possessing an offensive weapon. He was jailed for 16 weeks on Dec 16. There were about 40 cases of assault on public bus staff last year, with half of them occurring over mask incidents. Mr Mu'tasim and Mr Tan were among 10 presented with the Public Spiritedness Award at Bedok Police Division yesterday. Also commended were Mr Pu Zong Han, who chased and detained a teenage thief at Eunos MRT station last March, and six Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) officers from Kallang Fire Station who helped arrest a man who had molested a female bus passenger. The SCDF officers from the Disaster Assistance and Rescue Team were doing their morning run along Mountbatten Road in March last year when they saw a commotion at a bus stop. On checking, they were told by the bus driver that a man had molested a woman on the bus. The suspect tried to flee but was caught after a chase by the officers. The 10th award recipient, who wished to remain anonymous, was commended for assisting the police in the arrest of a man for voyeurism. At the commendation ceremony, Assistant Commissioner of Police and Commander of Bedok Police Division Julius Lim said: "The recipients of the Public Spiritedness Award exemplify the sense of community responsibility that is required for all of us during these difficult times... These individuals had put their safety on the line to uphold the rule of law. "Bedok Police Division is proud to count them as our partners and hope their examples will inspire others to step forward to keep our neighbourhoods safe."

Hamilton to take a knee again as knighthood sealed

LONDON • Seven-time Formula One world champion Lewis Hamilton was awarded a knighthood in the United Kingdom New Year's honours list published on Wednesday. The 35-year-old in November became the most successful F1 driver after equalling Ferrari great Michael Schumacher's record seven titles and beating the German's 91 race wins the month before. The sport's only black driver, who grew up in social housing as the grandson of immigrants from the Caribbean, Hamilton has also used his profile to campaign for diversity and speak out against racial injustice. The Monaco resident's presence on the overseas and international list, rather than the main one with many rewarded for service to public health during the Covid-19 pandemic, was seen as a reflection of his tax status. The Daily Mail said Prime Minister Boris Johnson had "bent the rules" to get around the tax requirements for domestic awards. The citation referred to Hamilton's sporting record and his "charitable and philanthropic contributions in the UK and overseas". His supporters have long felt his achievements have not been sufficiently recognised at home and they expressed delight at the Mercedes driver joining a select group of sporting sirs. "Lewis is a true giant of our sport and his influence is huge both in and out of a car," said newly-appointed F1 chief executive Stefano Domenicali, a former Ferrari team principal. "What he has achieved is phenomenal with still more to come." Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff hailed his star driver, who won his first title with McLaren in 2008, as the most successful British sportsman of his era. The knighthood, he added, showed Hamilton - often seen as a polarising figure - was "now receiving the recognition he has earned during a career of unparalleled success in motorsport". "The UK can be very proud to have a champion and ambassador of the calibre of Sir Lewis Hamilton," added the Austrian. Hamilton is the fourth F1 driver to be knighted after Australian Jack Brabham, Stirling Moss and three-time champion Jackie Stewart, and the only one to have received the award while still racing. Cycling's Tour de France winner Bradley Wiggins, Olympic 5,000m and 10,000m champion Mo Farah, three-time Grand Slam winner Andy Murray and cricketer Alastair Cook have also been knighted as active sportsmen. F1, FIA back Haas in criticism of Mazepin

LONDON • Formula One and governing body FIA yesterday joined the Haas team in condemning newly signed Russian driver Nikita Mazepin for posting a video on social media of a young woman being groped in a car. The Instagram Stories clip, which Mazepin uploaded, was swiftly deleted and the 21-year-old has apologised for what Haas called "abhorrent" behaviour. The woman, identified as model Alma del Caribe, has defended his actions, saying on Instagram that she has been friends with Mazepin for a long time and "nothing from that video was serious at all". However, F1 and FIA said in a joint statement: "We strongly support the Haas F1 team in its response to the recent inappropriate actions of its driver. "This matter will continue to be dealt with internally by the Haas F1 team. The ethical principles and diverse and inclusive culture of our sport are of the utmost importance to the FIA and Formula One." The incident occurred after two races in Bahrain and before Formula One's season-ending Abu Dhabi Grand Prix at the Yas Marina circuit this weekend. Mazepin was revealed last week, alongside Mick Schumacher, son of joint-record seven-time world champion Michael, as Haas' new driver duo for next season. Separately, Mercedes have fixed a radio problem that caused pit-stop confusion in Bahrain last weekend and wrecked their race, team boss Toto Wolff has said. The Silver Arrows put Valtteri Bottas' front tyres on race leader George Russell's car when both drivers pitted during a safety car period at Sakhir. The mistake meant that Russell, standing in for the Covid-stricken Lewis Hamilton, had to pit again. He ended up ninth after a late puncture dealt a further setback, but Wolff confirmed "we've put measures in place... to make sure it doesn't happen again". According to the Daily Mail, Mercedes are ready to wait until tomorrow to see if Hamilton can be fit to take part in Abu Dhabi. The Briton, who is still in self-isolating in Bahrain, must return a negative Covid-19 test before he can travel. Under FIA rules, Hamilton can be absent from today's two practice sessions, but must take part in either practice or qualifying tomorrow to be allowed to participate on Sunday. REUTERS

Motor racing: Singapore driver Sean Hudspeth ‘so proud’ after second title

In what was his most challenging year as a professional race car driver, Singapore's Sean Hudspeth still managed to end his season on a high, winning the 2020 Italian GT Endurance Championship pro-am class. He and his Easy Race teammates Matteo Greco and Mattia Michelotto won the Monza leg on Nov 8 in their Ferrari 488 GT3, allowing them to finish the campaign on 25 points, eight ahead of second-placed RS Racing's Daniele di Amato and Alessandro Vezzoni. Hudspeth, 26, said of winning his second championship in two seasons: "The championship went down to the wire but we managed to get it done. I'm so proud of the team and my teammates who have shown much improvement over the year." He had joined GT racing team AF Corse using Ferrari cars last year, making the leap from the Porsche Supercup to the Italian GT Sprint Championship. Despite having less than a month to adapt to a new car and a higher championship class (GT3), Hudspeth and teammate Antonio Fuoco went on to claim the Pro-Am overall title. The pandemic had scuppered Hudspeth's racing plans earlier this year as his first race, the first leg of the GT World Challenge Europe in Monza on April 19, was cancelled due to a nationwide lockdown to curb the spread of Covid-19. With no races or events for Hudspeth, who is a coach at Corso Pilota, Ferrari's driving school, he returned to Singapore in mid-March. It took him months and plenty of dead ends before he got the offer from Easy Race and flew back to London on May 27. His first race was in Mugello, Italy on July 17-19. Hudspeth, whose ultimate goal is racing in the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the world's oldest endurance race for sports cars, said: "I've learnt that no matter what, it is extremely important to keep working hard to improve and never stop trying until the chequered flag comes out.
