TOKYO, Jan 25, 2023 - (JCN Newswire via SEAPRWire.com) - NTT DOCOMO, INC., the Embodied Media Project led by Professor Kouta Minamizawa at Keio University Graduate School of Media Design and the Haptics Lab led by Professor Yoshihiro Tanaka at Nagoya Institute of Technology announced today they have developed a technology, called FEEL TECHTM, that enables haptic information to be shared between people via a human-augmentation platform that DOCOMO unveiled in January 2022.FEEL TECH's broad scope of potential applicationsStructure of human-augmentation platformThe FEEL TECH system, which DOCOMO believes is the world's first to share haptic information, comprises a device that detects a person's sensory state, a "driving" device that physically reproduces the same state in another person, and the human-augmentation platform that shares the information between devices connected to a network. Haptic information is quantified in terms of human-touch vibrations measured with a device similar to a Piezoelectric sensor. The vibrations are reproduced with a driving device, such as a transducer that vibrates when electricity is applied. Haptic sensations and corresponding video images are shared from one person ("presenter") to another person ("target"). To achieve crucial synchronization of the haptic and video data being shared, the platform is expected eventually to make full use of the ultra-low latency that will be offered in forthcoming 6G mobile networks. The human-augmentation platform is also notable for its capacity to learn the physical characteristics of each target person and then adjust the presenter's haptic information (degree of strength, etc.) so that the target can perceive the information easily and clearly. Furthermore, the platform can record the presenter's sense of touch and share it with the target over time. The platform can share haptic information between diverse people and device and across time. For example, an amateur craftsman could use the system to grasp the subtle techniques of a master craftsman, or individuals could use it to haptically recall sensations, etc. they experienced at a younger age.The system will make it possible to share sensations that conventionally have been difficult, if not impossible, to convey through images, sound, text or words alone. Accordingly, the system is expected to find practical applications in fields that rely on human senses, such as medicine and art. Also, shoppers on e-commerce sites could use it to experience the subtle feel of clothing fabrics, among other rich experiences not possible using other advanced technologies such as 3D or augmented reality. In view of the wide range of devices that could be interconnected via the human-augmentation platform, DOCOMO is now collaborating with diverse partners who offer value-added technologies suited to specific devices, which is expected to support the steady expansion of sharing existing and all-new types of sensory information. For the new technology, Keio University developed the driving device and sensory information for sharing, Nagoya Institute of Technology developed the device that detects the sensory states of people and an algorithm that interprets different sensory characteristics, and DOCOMO integrated these various elements in its human-augmentation platform.DOCOMO's vision for its human-augmentation platform includes achieving ubiquitous human bodies, sharing skills, sharing emotions, sharing five senses, and telepathy & telekinesis. In addition to having achieved the ubiquitous human bodies and sharing skills, DOCOMO has now realized sharing five senses.Going forward, by further extending possibilities for transmitting emotions, the five senses, etc. through increasingly advanced technologies, DOCOMO hopes to contribute to greater wellness and better understanding of problems such as harassment in global society.FEEL TECH will be introduced during the "docomo Open House '23" online event beginning on Thursday, February 2 and at DOCOMO's booth at MWC Barcelona 2023 beginning on Sunday, February 27.Please also see:Development of Human Augmentation Platform for New Value in the 6G Erawww.docomo.ne.jp/info/news_release/2022/01/17_00.html (Japanese only)DOCOMO 6G White Paperwww.docomo.ne.jp/english/corporate/technology/whitepaper_6g/docomo Open House '23www.docomo.ne.jp/english/corporate/technology/rd/openhouse/openhouse2023/MWC Barcelona 2023www.mwcbarcelona.com/2023-interestAbout NTT DOCOMONTT DOCOMO, Japan's leading mobile operator with over 85 million subscriptions, is one of the world's foremost contributors to 3G, 4G and 5G mobile network technologies. TOKYO, Oct 24, 2022 - (JCN Newswire via SEAPRWire.com) - NEC Corporation (TSE: 6701) has globally released a new device that uses ear acoustic biometric authentication to identify individuals and prevent unauthorized use of devices. The "Hearable Device" was jointly developed with Foster Electric Company, Limited, and was made available from October 21 through "Makuake Global," a service to support pre-ordering provided by Makuake, Inc.In 2020, when the Hearable Device first became available in Japan, it immediately achieved its sales target approximately 2 hours after its release. As a result, it was nominated for "Makuake Of The Year 2021," which is awarded to projects for story, topic, number of supporters and pre-ordering totals. In addition to the existing ear acoustic authentication, speech active noise canceling and sensors that were already installed, this new model is equipped with functions that acquire biometric information (ear canal surface temperature and pulse related information) from ears, thereby enabling a new way to verify personal authentication. Moreover, it provides an SDK for application development, which makes it possible for users to independently develop applications for iOS and Android that utilize the functions of the Hearable Device. In recent years, in response to various security risks, such as impersonation and unauthorized access, which are rapidly increasing with the spread of digitalization, authentication has become more complicated when using services, which has created a new problem of increasing the burden on users. The ear acoustic authentication installed in the Hearable Device is a biometric authentication method that identifies individuals by utilizing the internal structure of the head, including ear holes. This is an original NEC technology that is part of the biometrics brand "Bio-IDiom"(*). Since authentication is performed using an earphone-type device, it differs from other biometrics authentication in that personal identification can be performed by simply listening to sound, anytime, anywhere. When using digital services such as online meetings, users have no need to enter an ID or password, and can be authenticated naturally just by wearing earphones.Features of the Hearable Device1. Joint development between NEC and Foster ElectricJointly developed by NEC, which boasts approximately 50 years in research and development as a biometrics authentication vendor and possesses world-class technology, and Foster Electric, which operates globally as a manufacturer of audio equipment and parts.2. NEC's original ear acoustic authenticationEar acoustic authentication using individual differences in the spatial structure of the head, including the ear hole (ear canal). This original NEC technology uses an earphone-type authentication device that emits a test sound into the ear canal and determines an individual's identity from the reflected sound.3. Speech active noise cancellingEquipped with a function that allows a user to clearly communicate only their own voice to other parties, even in noisy environments. In addition to preventing unintended voice intrusion and information leakage in online meetings, voice memos can also be stored with high security.4. Various sensors that can acquire biological informationNewly equipped with functions to acquire ear canal surface temperature and pulse related information data from the outer ear. TOKYO, Oct 20, 2022 - (JCN Newswire via SEAPRWire.com) - Hitachi Astemo, Ltd. has developed a prototype of a new steer-by-wire steering device that eliminates the conventional steering wheel and expands the cabin space. Steer-by-wire is a feature that steers the vehicles electrically--an essential technology for self-driving and other next-generation vehicles. The steer-by-wire technology links the steering and turning actuators* via electric signals to steer the car - providing the benefit of improved safety and comfort, as well as flexibility for interior design. In anticipation of automated driving, Hitachi Astemo is leveraging the collective strength of the Hitachi Group in developing steer-by-wire technology. New steer-by- wire devices that retain the conventional steering wheel -- or eliminate it altogether -- give automobile manufacturers improved flexibility in designing next-generation vehicles.* A device that converts power from motive force or driver operation into an action. With steer-by-wire systems, the lack of a mechanical link enables the downsizing of steering devices to increase cabin space and eliminate the conventional steering wheel altogether. A smaller steering device, however, can result in the vehicle's steering being overly sensitive to driver inputs. To resolve this, Hitachi Astemo's new steering device incorporates advanced steering feel technology, developed by the former Showa Corporation (merged to become part of Hitachi Astemo in 2021); and information control technology that detects and transmits road surface information, jointly developed with Hitachi, Ltd. The technology's speed-sensitive steering, optimized steering ratios to manage steering angle, and communicative control technology -- which detects and suppresses distracting external disturbances such as road surface irregularities and inclines-- enable smooth driving without being oversensitive to vehicle movement. In addition, the optimization of the turning actuator, the elimination of control devices on the of the steering wheel/device, and a simple mechanical device for steering feedback not only make the system cost-effective, but also enable the optimization of driver assistance controls, such as emergency avoidance and behavior compensation control. To prevent failures, which are a concern with steer-by-wire systems, fail-safe functions are integrated to ensure continued operation in the event of a failure or loss of circuitry. Two power supplies are used for the actuator, and the steering angle sensor detects the steering device's input angle in the actuator.Hitachi Astemo is committed to strengthening its business and delivering technological innovation through a strategic business portfolio, which consists of the Powertrain & Safety Systems business, Chassis business, Motorcycle business, Software business and Aftermarket business. Aiming for a better environment globally and growth around the pillars of "green," "digital," and "innovation," we will deliver highly efficient internal combustion engine systems; electric systems that reduce emissions; autonomous driving for improved safety and comfort; advanced driver assistance systems; and advanced chassis systems. Through such advanced mobility solutions, we will contribute to realizing a sustainable society and provide enhanced corporate value for our customers. For more information, please visit the Hitachi Astemo website: www.hitachiastemo.com/en/. TOKYO, Oct 28, 2021 - (JCN Newswire via SEAPRWire.com) - NTT Corporation and NEC Corporation have developed Security Transparency Assurance Technology, which is the core technology for realizing the Trusted Network Concept. Security Transparency Assurance Technology, which aims to reduce supply chain security risks, ensures security transparency throughout the supply chain by sharing system configurations and risks of network devices and information systems that constitute ICT infrastructure, including the Fifth Generation Mobile Communication Systems (5G), private 5G, and Innovative Optical and Wireless Networks (IOWN(1)). Figure 1: Security Transparency Assurance Technology Overview and BenefitsNTT and NEC entered into a capital and business alliance in June 2020 for the purpose of joint research and development and the global rollout of ICT products utilizing innovative optical and wireless technologies(2), and are developing internationally competitive products and technologies. This initiative is a part of the alliance. The latest results of this technology will be exhibited in the NTT R&D Forum - Road to IOWN 2021(3), which is scheduled to be held from November 16 to 19 in 2021.1. BackgroundAs the digital transformation (DX) of society and industry accelerates, supply chain security risks, such as intrusions of unauthorized software (malware, etc.) through the supply chain related to procurements, maintenance, and operations of network devices and information systems constituting the ICT infrastructure, and unauthorized intrusion into networks and information systems through organizations with weak cybersecurity facilities, have become apparent. As a risk countermeasure, the suppliers of network devices and information systems (e.g., network device vendors, system integrators, etc.) in the supply chain work to ensure and confirm security for customers. At present, however, it is technically difficult to detect and confirm security risks and we have to rely on the trust between the suppliers and the customers.2. TechnologySecurity Transparency Assurance Technology, which is at the core of the realization of trusted networks, is a technology that ensures transparency regarding the security of ICT infrastructures by sharing information (hereinafter referred to as "device information") that visualizes the configuration and risks of communications devices and systems that constitute ICT infrastructure. Security Transparency Assurance Technology features the following:1. Visualizes software configurations in network devices continuously through the supply chain (e.g., manufacturing, shipping, deployment and operation) and generates device information including the inspection results, the presence of backdoors and illegal components.2. Device information enables high-quality risk analysis and monitoring based on its completeness and accuracy, and the transparency of device information is maintained at a high level through continuous updates of it.3. Sharing device information among organizations that form the supply chain makes it possible to take countermeasures against security risks, to take advantage of transparency and to improve security at all phases and through all organizations in the supply chain. This technology is supported by the following elemental technologies possessed by NTT and NEC. NTT - Configuration analysis technology for visualizing software configuration of devicesNEC - Backdoor inspection technology to detect illegal functions in device softwareNEC - Automated cyber-attack risk assessment technology for visualizing attack routes in systems(4)Using this technology, customers can check the presence of suspicious components by referring to the device information during procurement and operation(5), and suppliers can explain the risk of contamination with unauthorized components objectively. In addition, customers can take prompt action by identifying risks and impacts using device information when a new software vulnerability is found.3. Future DevelopmentWe are planning to carry out technical validation using this technology through private 5G within fiscal 2021 to verify the effectiveness of each elemental technology and identify issues. Furthermore, we aim to set up a consortium of players involved in the construction and operation of trusted networks, such as communication device vendors, system integrators, and user companies. By utilizing this technology, we will establish countermeasures for supply chain security risk that is difficult by a single player.(1) IOWN (Innovative Optical and Wireless Network) A future communication infrastructure that supports a smart world and utilizes the latest optical and information processing technologies.URL: https://www.rd.ntt/e/iown/(2) Alliance for Joint Research and Development and Global Rollout of ICT Products Utilizing Innovative Optical and Wireless TechnologiesURL: https://group.ntt/en/newsrelease/2020/06/25/200625b.html(3) NTT R&D Forum - Road to IOWN 2021URL: https://www.rd.ntt/e/(4) Technology provided by NEC to visualize system security risks and the effects of countermeasures.Cyber Attack Route Assessment ServiceURL: https://jpn.nec.com/press/202106/20210629_01.html(5) This makes it possible to easily respond to supply chain security requirements (security inspection at device procurement and operation, risk reduction, etc.) in guidelines set by government agencies in various countries.About NEC CorporationNEC Corporation has established itself as a leader in the integration of IT and network technologies while promoting the brand statement of "Orchestrating a brighter world." SINGAPORE - Antigen rapid test (ART) kits for use at home have been flying off the shelves as self-testing ourselves for Covid-19 becomes a regular part of people's lives at work, school and home. The Straits Times checks out the various kits out there to find out how easy each of them are to use. The kits cost between $8 and $13 apiece, with a lower per-kit price for larger packs. Abbott PanBio Covid-19 Antigen Self-Test ST PHOTO: HILLARY TAN Wait time for results: 15 minutes Number of rotations in each nostril: Five Available at: Most major pharmacies The biggest difference with this kit is that the buffer solution comes in a separate container, and must be transferred into a dropper tube before use. The instructions also specify that the swab stick must be broken at the break line and left inside the tube before sealing and dripping the solution onto the test device. Our review: The Abbott PanBio test is great for home use. The separate packaging for the buffer liquid keeps things very hygienic, and the steps are clear and easy to follow. However, the packaging is stiff and not the easiest to use. I find the process more finicky and messier, which could make them more challenging for younger children and those with limited mobility to use. Quidel QuickVue At-Home OTC Covid-19 Test ST PHOTO: HILLARY TAN Wait time for results: 10 minutes Number of rotations in each nostril: At least four Available at: Most major pharmacies After swabbing, the user is required to leave the swab stick in the solution for a minute. Unlike other kits on the market, this one does not require the user to drip the solution onto a test device; instead the device is put into the solution. The results are also read differently. While most kits reflect a positive result by having two visible pink lines, this one displays a pink line close to the blue control line to indicate a positive result. This kit is also the fastest in producing the result, at just 10 minutes. Our Review: This was my favourite kit. I preferred inserting the test device into a bottle to having to drip the sample onto a test device, as it reduces margin of error, and I am less likely to create a mess. Plus, a result displayed with two differently coloured lines is less ambiguous, and easier to explain to children and the elderly. One gripe? I do wish the test strip was less flimsy. SD Biosensor SARS-CoV-2 Antigen Self-Test Nasal ST PHOTO: HILLARY TAN Wait time for results: 15 minutes Number of rotations in each nostril: Four Available at: Selected pharmacies The kits by SD Biosensor are the most compact. They include a desiccant package within the same pouch. If its beads are yellow, the kit is usable, but green beads indicate that the test is no longer valid. Our Review: Having the desiccant package gave me peace of mind, knowing for sure that the test kit was valid. The kit was simple to use and instructions were clear. Most importantly, this kit only required four rotations in each nostril, keeping the process quick and reducing the discomfort. SD Biosensor Standard Q Covid-19 Ag Home Test ST PHOTO: HILLARY TAN Wait time for results: 15 minutes Number of rotations in each nostril: 10 Available at: Most major pharmacies This kit also includes the desiccant package within the same pouch as the test device to reflect if the kit is valid for use. Out of all the kits we tested, this one required the most number of rotations in each nostril. Our Review: This kit was the easiest to acquire, and was easy to use. However, given that most of the other kits only required four or five rotations per nostril, I found this one, which requires 10, to be slightly more uncomfortable. BD Kit for Rapid Detection of Sars-CoV-2 ST PHOTO: HILLARY TAN Wait time for results: 15 minutes Number of rotations in each nostril: Five Availability: Given out in schools; currently not available over the counter The packaging is the most integrated and easiest to keep organised, with the dropper nozzle already attached on the side of the sample collection tube. Instructions are in the four major languages: English, Malay, Tamil and Chinese. The main difference in the testing process for this kit is that the swab must be left in each nostril for an extra five seconds, on top of the five rotations. BD has an identical test kit, packaged differently for retail, on The Health Sciences Authority's (HSA) list. The BD Veritor At-Home Covid-19 Test, however, is currently not circulated in Singapore. Our Review: I thought this kit was the most portable and easy to keep organised . The attached dropper cap prevented me from losing parts of the kit and the larger test device felt sturdier than the others. That said, I did not enjoy having to keep the swab in my nostril for an additional five seconds after rotating it - it made my eyes water a bit more than with the other kits. After trying all the kits approved for use in Singapore, I would definitely use any of them again, and will do so regularly to ensure my health and safety. Overall, they were generally very similar, and all were fairly easy to use. Should you test positive or invalid on an ART test twice, take a photograph of your test results with your identification document in the same photo. You can then dispose of the test kit. The Group provides stable supplies of precious metals, which are valuable resources, using a recycling-oriented business from procurement to product development and recycling. TANAKA has long focused on the healthcare field as an area that can contribute to society while making use of the properties of precious metals. The company performs contract manufacturing of in-vitro diagnostic kits that use gold colloids and supplies precious metal components and materials to domestic and overseas medical device manufacturers.Precious metal parts and materials that use platinum, gold, and other metals are used in many devices for treatment within blood vessels including balloon catheters, guidewire embolization coils, and stents. Precious metals including platinum and gold have biocompatibility and high specific gravity compared to other metals, which makes them highly opaque to X-rays. As a result, when inserting balloon catheters or other medical devices into blood vessels, the treatment can be performed while confirming the location of the device within the blood vessel by viewing the precious metal portion, offering an advantage over other metals.About Ambix Life Science Fund and Aaron Berez, MDAmbix Life Science Fund I, L.P. is a medical device venture fund managed by Ambix Venture Management, LLC, a U.S.-based venture capital management company. SINGAPORE - Intending to protect himself from his "enemies", a 30-year-old man bought a stun device that was shaped like an Apple iPhone. But Alexander Aw Boon Hao later brandished it when he quarrelled with his girlfriend. He was sentenced to four months' jail on Friday (July 9). Aw was also ordered to pay a fine of $3,000, in default of which he will have to serve an additional two weeks' jail. The Singaporean, who was not represented by any lawyer, had earlier pleaded guilty to a charge of illegally possessing the stun device. Another charge of voluntarily causing hurt to his girlfriend was taken into consideration during sentencing. He had grabbed her by the hair. Court documents did not state if Aw and his girlfriend are still together. In August last year, Aw purchased the stun device online using the shopping app Wish. He had claimed to have bought it for $20, the court earlier heard. He felt pain and suffered bruises after testing the item on himself. Aw would carry the device with him when he went out, even though he knew that it was unlawful. He got into an argument and then a scuffle with his girlfriend in a taxi on Nov 26. Aw took out the stun device and told her to keep quiet. But she called the police when they reached their residence - a flat in Ang Mo Kio. The girlfriend later told police officers responding to her call about the stun device. She had been puzzled seeing Aw carry two phones around. She also mentioned that she had spoken about this at the coffee shop where she worked, and a customer had told her the item might be a stun device. He initially told police officers that it was a signal jammer but could not explain why he would need the item. Aw later admitted that it was a stun device after they tested it on the spot and saw that it produced a crackling sound with a spark. On Friday, he told Senior District Judge Ong Hian Sun that he would not be paying the fine, and would serve the default two weeks' jail instead. For the offence of unlawfully possessing the stun device, Aw could have been jailed for up to three years and fined up to $5,000. TSUKUBA, Japan, Jun 29, 2021 - (ACN Newswire via SEAPRWire.com) - A new device harvests two types of energy during the daytime, making it cool on one end and hot on the other, to generate electricity around the clock. With further improvements, the device could be used in off-grid Internet-of-things sensors. The details were published in the journal Science and Technology of Advanced Materials.Thermal emission is radiated from the top of the device, keeping it cool, while sunlight is absorbed at the bottom, keeping that part warm. The temperature gradient and types of materials used lead to the generation of a spin current that is converted to thermoelectric voltage.Scientists have known for at least 200 years that electricity can be generated from a temperature gradient, a phenomenon called thermoelectric generation. Recently, researchers have developed thermoelectric conversion technologies by changing material parameters and introducing new principles. For example, researchers have found that magnetic materials can generate thermoelectric voltage by inducing a flow of electron spins along a temperature gradient, called the spin Seebeck effect, and that increasing a device's length perpendicular to the gradient boosts voltage. Scientists would like to fabricate more efficient, thin thermoelectric devices based on the spin Seebeck effect. However, the thinner the device, the more difficult it is to maintain a temperature gradient between its top and bottom.Satoshi Ishii and Ken-ichi Uchida of Japan's National Institute for Materials Science and colleagues have solved this problem by making a device with magnetic layers that continuously cools at the top and absorbs heat from the sun at the bottom. In this way, the device harvests two types of energy. Radiative cooling occurs at the top, as heat is lost from a material in the form of infrared radiation, while solar radiation is absorbed at the bottom."It is really important to take full advantage of renewable energy in order to achieve a more sustainable society," explains Ishii. "Daytime radiative cooling and solar heating have both been used to improve a variety of thermoelectric applications. Our device uses both types of energy simultaneously to generate a thermoelectric voltage."Here's how it works:The device has four layers. The top layer is a weak paramagnet made of gadolinium gallium garnet. This layer is transparent to sunlight and emits thermal radiation to the universe, getting cooler. Sunlight passes through to the following ferrimagnetic layer made of yttrium iron garnet. This layer is also transparent, so light continues to travel down into the bottom two light-absorbing layers, made of paramagnetic platinum and blackbody paint. The bottom section stays warm due to sunlight absorption. The spin current is generated in the ferromagnetic layer owing to the temperature gradient between the top and bottom of the device and is converted to electric voltage in the paramagnetic platinum layer. The device works best on clear days, as clouds reduce the achievable temperature gradient by blocking the emitted infrared radiation from passing through the atmosphere and reducing the solar heating. While promising, the device's thermoelectric generation efficiency was still quite low. The team plans to boost its efficiency by improving the design, experimenting with different material combinations, and developing even more novel strategies for thermoelectric generation.Further informationSatoshi IshiiNational Institute for Materials ScienceEmail: sishii@nims.go.jpKen-ichi UchidaNational Institute for Materials ScienceEmail: UCHIDA.Kenichi@nims.go.jp About Science and Technology of Advanced Materials JournalOpen access journal STAM publishes outstanding research articles across all aspects of materials science, including functional and structural materials, theoretical analyses, and properties of materials.
