Now in its 23rd edition, the competition continues to provide a platform for local talents to showcase their creative flair, to identify budding designers, and advance design excellence in the local jewellery industry. The theme of this year's competition was "Dream", encompassing both the fantastical imaginations of people's dreams as well as the aspirations they have for the future. The competition was divided into two categories, the Open Group and the Student Group, with contestants giving highly personal interpretations of the theme through works of extraordinary creativity and craftsmanship.Open Group shows imagination and exquisite craftsmanshipThree Best of Show awards were given in the Open Group. Yuen Ching-chi claimed a Best of Show award for the second consecutive year. Her 2022 entry, "The Dream of Butterfly", in black and white tones, portrays butterflies that dream of dancing freely in the snow and the transformations they must go through to survive periods of severe weather. Ms Yuen's design sends a message that everyone can still carry their dreams and fly high under adversity.Another Best of Show award went to Hui Yuk-king's multipurpose ring, "Where Dreams Lie". Her design is adorned with more than 900 coloured sapphires in 100 different shades, totalling more than 20 carats, all handpicked by the designer herself. It took more than 500 hours to create this delicate and colourful ring that depicts the origin of dreams and explores our imaginations."Flying" by Yung Yuk-shan is the third piece given the Best of Show award. The pendant/brooch depicts an astronaut being lifted into the air by a bunch of handheld, planet-shaped balloons. Inspiration came from the designer's childhood dream of going on space adventures as well as the sense of pride she felt when a Chinese female astronaut went into space.Student Group unleashes boundless potentialOpen to students of institutions registered in Hong Kong, the Student Group category of the competition aims to inspire more young design talents to join the jewellery design profession. This year, VTC Youth College student Stephanie Law's entry, "The Unicorn in My Dream - RUNNING", won both the Champion title and the Craftsmanship and Technology Award. The ring is embellished with sapphires and a droplet tourmaline mounted in 18-karat white gold and yellow gold. The unicorn's wings show an enamelled gradation, from red to violet, that adds a hint of fantasy, while the surrounding whirlwind feature can be spun around. The second runner-up spot went to Alison Yip who is studying on a programme co-offered by the School for Higher and Professional Education and Sheffield Hallam University. Her bangle design, "Fountain of Utopia", is a visualisation of the designer's ideal world. She imagines there is a goddess who bestows spring water that can cure people's pain and forgive their sins, helping to create a utopia. This year, two second runner-up awardees were selected from a plethora of impressive entries. Cannis Pang from the Hong Kong Design Institute created "Wonderland", a ring designed as a dreamy flower with a swirling shape. Glass beads of different sizes resemble short-lived bubbles in a dream-like atmosphere. Lam Wai-yee, a repeat winner from the School of Continuing Education at Hong Kong Baptist University, designed "The Interlock", a bangle that locks "dreams" and "ambitions" together, conveying a determination to pursue one's goals.Nearly 120 entries were submitted for this year's Jewellery Design Competition. The seven-strong judging panel evaluated the entries based on creativity and innovation, aesthetics, craftsmanship and wearability, topic relevance and marketability (the latter applicable only to the Open Group). This year, the newly added "Popularity Award" went to Hui Yuk-king's entry "Where Dreams Lie". TSUKUBA, Japan, Sep 30, 2021 - (ACN Newswire via SEAPRWire.com) - A new approach can train a machine learning model to predict the properties of a material using only data obtained through simple measurements, saving time and money compared with those currently used. It was designed by researchers at Japan's National Institute for Materials Science (NIMS), Asahi KASEI Corporation, Mitsubishi Chemical Corporation, Mitsui Chemicals, and Sumitomo Chemical Co and reported in the journal Science and Technology of Advanced Materials: Methods. The new approach can predict difficult-to-measure experimental data such as tensile modulus using easy-to-measure experimental data like X-ray diffraction. It further helps design new materials or repurpose already known ones."Machine learning is a powerful tool for predicting the composition of elements and process needed to fabricate a material with specific properties," explains Ryo Tamura, a senior researcher at NIMS who specializes in the field of materials informatics.A tremendous amount of data is usually needed to train machine learning models for this purpose. Two kinds of data are used. Controllable descriptors are data that can be chosen without making a material, such as the chemical elements and processes used to synthesize it. But uncontrollable descriptors, like X-ray diffraction data, can only be obtained by making the material and conducting experiments on it."We developed an effective experimental design method to more accurately predict material properties using descriptors that cannot be controlled," says Tamura. The approach involves the examination of a dataset of controllable descriptors to choose the best material with the target properties to use for improving the model's accuracy. In this case, the scientists interrogated a database of 75 types of polypropylenes to select a candidate with specific mechanical properties. They then selected the material and extracted some of its uncontrollable descriptors, for example, its X-ray diffraction data and mechanical properties. This data was added to the present dataset to better train a machine learning model employing special algorithms to predict a material's properties using only uncontrollable descriptors."Our experimental design can be used to predict difficult-to-measure experimental data using easy-to-measure data, accelerating our ability to design new materials or to repurpose already known ones, while reducing the costs," says Tamura. The prediction method can also help improve understanding of how a material's structure affects specific properties. The team is currently working on further optimizing their approach in collaboration with chemical manufacturers in Japan.Further informationRyo TamuraNational Institute for Materials Science (NIMS)Email: tamura.ryo@nims.go.jpAbout Science and Technology of Advanced Materials: Methods (STAM Methods)STAM Methods is an open access sister journal of Science and Technology of Advanced Materials (STAM), and focuses on emergent methods and tools for improving and/or accelerating materials developments, such as methodology, apparatus, instrumentation, modeling, high-through put data collection, materials/process informatics, databases, and programming. https://www.tandfonline.com/STAM-MDr. Yoshikazu ShinoharaSTAM Methods Publishing DirectorEmail: SHINOHARA.Yoshikazu@nims.go.jpPress release distributed by Asia Research News for Science and Technology of Advanced Materials. Three main business strategies that strengthen the brand's unique positioning in the rapidly changing market underscore its continued success.Dual Driving Factors of "Design" & "Brand"Since its launch in 1994, JNBY has evolved into a multi-designer brand group, while maintaining the core concept of "Just Naturally Be Yourself." The company has developed a diversified retail model, that integrates brick-and-mortar stores, third-party e-commerce channels, and social platforms by connecting sales, member, and product data. In turn, this helps improve fans' shopping experience across all channels in real time.JNBY has more than 4.9 million unique membership accounts as of FY21, making it the industry leader in digital membership strategy. Moreover, JNBY members show high brand loyalty, with their revenue contribution accounting for over 70% of total retail sales in FY21. The company finalized its ESG governance framework in FY21 and aspires to meet its ESG commitments by 2025. It also aims to increase sustainable raw materials sourcing to 30% by 2023, in line with its core concept of sustainable design.Looking ahead, JNBY will create an international designer incubation platform to nurture more young designers and develop potential new brands. It may also seek M&A opportunities to further increase the group's growth and market influence. With the core value of "Better Design, Better Life", the company will commit to providing its fans with joyful design and a "JNBY" lifestyle across fashion, art and creativity. For more information about JNBY Group, please visit:http://www.jnbygroup.com/ Copyright 2021 ACN Newswire. SINGAPORE - The motif of a lion head takes centre stage in this year's National Day Parade (NDP) logo, which was designed by Nanyang Polytechnic student Tan Yun Xin. "I was inspired by how Singapore has come together during the pandemic - from our front-line workers doing their best to battle the pandemic to individual Singaporeans staying home to contain the spread," said Ms Tan, 19, who chose the lion head to be a part of the logo as it symbolises three national values - courage, excellence and strength. It also represents the nation's strength of will and unity. These are traits she feels are much needed to adapt to today's unprecedented times. Her design was shortlisted from 45 entries from four schools and eventually chosen by the NDP committee. The third-year visual communications student spent slightly over three months designing the logo, while juggling her other academic commitments. Ms Tan's lecturers guided her through the design process, which started off with more than 20 hand-drawn sketches. They suggested ways to adjust the logo for it to look more proportionate and helped guide her in polishing up the logo. For Ms Tan, weaving the number 56 into the logo - to mark Singapore's 56th year of independence - was the most challenging part of the process. "There were times when the number didn't seem obvious in the design and the logo didn't look like a lion. Getting the dimensions right was a challenge," she said. Mr Shawn Yeo, Ms Tan's senior polytechnic lecturer who oversaw her project, advised her on making her logo scalable and adaptable while keeping its key elements. "Yun Xin really wanted to encourage Singaporeans who are affected yet standing strong during this pandemic. I'm proud of her final outcome," he said. The lion head was chosen to be a part of the logo as it symbolises three national values - courage, excellence and strength. "I feel really honoured and proud to be able to make such a contribution to Singapore's National Day celebrations - this experience gave me a strong sense of pride and belonging," she said. Ms Tan hopes to have a career in the design industry and improve lives through her designs. "I plan to pursue graphic design in the future, but anything is possible at this point," she added.
