SINGAPORE - More than 1,900 faculty members and staff at Nanyang Technological University (NTU) have donated a record $13.68 million worth of unused leave to student aid and school advancement. This marks an increase of more than 33 per cent from last year's donation of $10.25 million. NTU employees gave a total of 27,593 days of unused leave this year, up from 20,145 days last year, according to a statement by the university on Tuesday (Nov 23). This is the second year that NTU's Leave Redemption and Donation Exercise has taken place. It began last year to allow employees to give their unused vacation leave to an NTU fund of their choice. University staff donate the monetary value of their unused leave based on individual salary rates, said NTU. An average of 14 days of leave were pledged by 1,978 faculty members and staff. Among them is Mr Chin-Hsien Cheng, a project officer at the Asian School of the Environment, who gave 26 leave days to the NTU Priorities Fund. Mr Cheng said: "In these uncertain times, while we are all impacted by the Covid-19 outbreak, the students are still our priority. "I also enjoy my research work, and hence the vacation leave is not that important to me. It is my pleasure to donate it to students." Of the $13.68 million raised this year, $4.17 million was channelled to the NTU Priorities Fund. The fund targets urgent needs identified by the university's leadership. Launched in April last year as part of the university's Covid-19 relief package, it has provided financial support for NTU students from Singapore and abroad who are affected by the pandemic and have no other avenue for help. To date, 1,425 students have received financial assistance of more than $2 million from the university's Covid-19 relief package, said NTU. NTU senior vice-president of administration Tan Aik Na said: "With the prolonged Covid-19 pandemic, many employees have stepped forward to ask how we can do more, especially for our students. This latest round of donations will enable us to boost our programmes and financial assistance to our students and ensure that no NTU student is left behind due to this pandemic." He said: "While IT access has helped mitigate Covid-19's impact on access to information and social connection, my colleagues and I are keenly aware of its impact on students' financial worries and other concerns. "As a university community, we have to do all that we can to support our students during this pandemic. When we contribute what we can, we lift up everyone around us." An online survey of 474 people by The Straits Times last year found that more than half of the respondents wanted their employers to allow them to donate unused leave. Those who were interested in donating leave said they would prefer to give to charity instead of being forced to clear days owing or have them forfeited. Meanwhile, some of those who preferred not to donate their leave said they would rather spend time with their loved ones or be allowed to encash their days owed. SINGAPORE - There is a risk of flash floods occurring in several areas in Singapore after heavy rain on Thursday (Nov 18) filled drains and canals to near full capacity, the PUB warned. In social media posts, the national water agency said water levels in drains and canals had reached 90 per cent in Pasir Panjang and Commonwealth Drive at around 8.20am. PUB had earlier said that heavy rains were expected in many parts of Singapore from 8.30am to 10.30am on Thursday. Water levels had risen past 90 per cent in Jalan Boon Lay and Clementi Road as at 8.30am. Hillcrest Road, which is near National Junior College, and Dunearn Road, near Sime Darby Centre, also saw water levels rise past 90 per cent. The Meteorological Service Singapore said earlier that wet weather is expected to continue for the rest of November, with thundery afternoon showers forecast on most days during this period, which will extend into the evening on a few days. Due to the prevailing winds, the showers could be especially intense on one or two days, said the Meteorological Service Singapore. While the second half of November is not expected to be as wet as the first, the overall rainfall for the month is forecast to be above average in most parts of Singapore. Daily temperatures should range between 24 deg C and 33 deg C on most days, and may reach 34 deg C on some days when there is less cloud cover. The first half of the month saw thundery afternoon showers over the island on most days. On Nov 4, converging winds and strong solar heating of land areas led to intense rain over Singapore, with the highest daily precipitation of 118.2mm recorded for the first half of the month in Sembawang. LONDON (AFP) - Fifa welcomed on Sunday (Oct 3) a relaxing of quarantine regulations that will allow Premier League players to travel to represent their nations in countries on the UK's red-list for travel. A number of South American and African stars were not released by their clubs for the September international break as they would have had to spend 10 days quarantining in a government-mandated hotel on their return to England. The exemption only applies for those fully vaccinated against coronavirus and players will still be forced to stay in a hotel or private accommodation provided by the club on their own for 10 days. However, they will be allowed out once a day to play or train. "Fifa welcomes the UK government's decision to allow fully vaccinated players the opportunity to represent their countries in the upcoming qualifying matches for the Fifa World Cup and return from a red-list country to bespoke quarantine conditions," world football's governing body said in a statement. "We have worked closely with the UK government, Football Association and Premier League to find a reasonable solution, in the interests of everyone, and we believe this is a much more desirable solution to the situation that players faced in September." The bespoke solution has still been criticised by clubs for the mental impact it can have on players, who face spending up to three weeks without their families. "The players go for 10-12 days with their national teams. Then another 10 days away from their families into quarantine. That's 22 days and two weeks later there is another international break," said Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp on Friday. "It is not okay we just move responsibility to the players. If you are ready to do that then ok, if not then stay here." Players also risk not being able to travel if they have not been fully vaccinated. "We acknowledge this decision does not help every player and we remain committed to further improving the situation for upcoming windows and joining discussions to explain more about the many measures we are putting in place to reduce the risks of Covid transmission into the community as a result of player travel," Fifa's statement added.
PARIS (AFP) - The 2022 Monaco Grand Prix will fall into line with the other races on the calendar and take place over three days rather than its traditional four, Formula One president Stefano Domenicali announced on Wednesday (Sept 22). The Monaco GP, which was first run in 1929 and has been ever-present since the inception of the F1 world championship in 1950, has traditionally held practice on the Thursday with a day off on Friday before the race weekend, rather than simply running Friday to Sunday like the other events. "Monaco will take place over three days, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, directly, instead of Thursday, break on Friday, then Saturday and Sunday," Domenicali told CNN. The Monaco GP was historically held around the Christian feast day of the Ascension when Thursday was a public holiday, and hence it was possible to use the public roads that make the circuit so special. It had the added bonus for the local traders of luring the public to the Principality for four days rather than three. It retained the practice even after the race no longer coincided with the Ascension. Domenicali also confirmed that the French Grand Prix would remain on the calendar which would be expanded to a record 23 races, one more than this season. The 2022 calendar will be announced at the World Motorsport Council on Oct 15. A close second is CryptoPunks, which continues to set new records thanks to the addition of giant whales. On August 7, a CryptoPunk NFT was sold for nearly $4.4 million for 1,500 ETH, making it one of the most expensive Punks to date. This CryptoPunk is number 2338 out of 10,000 such collectibles, and it is one of only 88 bots in the entire series. So it’s equally important to pick the right item for scarcity. This neglected early NFT project was recently rediscovered, and these NFTs have been gaining a lot of attention since last week as EtherRock users minted their remaining stones. Even Coinbase investor, social media influencer and NFT collector Gary Vaynerchuk tweeted about it while discussing the value-added benefits it has as an early NFT item. 4, NFT Leasing If investors love CryptoPunk’s images but can’t afford its high price and don’t want to take the blame for theft, users can try CryptoPunk.Rent’s rental NFT service. Rent allows users to get a short term access to CryptoPunk (up to 99 days) for a much lesser price and use the CryptoPunk as much as they want during the rental period. In addition to CryptoPunk, other NFTs can also be leased out through this concept. The reNFT platform is the first trading platform to propose the concept of leasing NFT, in the reNFT website you can simply rent or lease an NFT, choose a good time to rent, pay a certain amount of deposit and rent, you can achieve the transfer of virtual assets. SINGAPORE - All new travellers arriving from high-risk countries and regions must be placed on a 14-day stay-home notice (SHN) from Wednesday (June 23), instead of 21 days, at dedicated facilities. However, they must take an antigen rapid test using self-test kits on the third, seventh and eleventh day after arriving in Singapore. The Ministry of Health said in a statement on Wednesday that while there is increased transmissibility with the new variants of concern, it found no evidence - from both overseas and local data - that these variants come with longer incubation periods. It added that since the 21-day SHN for all travellers with recent travel history to higher-risk countries or regions was implemented from May 8, there were 270 imported cases among such travellers as at Tuesday. "All of them had incubation periods well within the 14-day window. As such, we will reduce the SHN period from 21 days back to 14 days," said MOH. However, to identify potential infection cases early and provide infected travellers with appropriate medical care as soon as possible, travellers will be required to test themselves regularly with antigen rapid test kits on days three, seven and 11 of their arrival in Singapore, while serving their SHN. This is on top of the Covid-19 polymerase chain reaction (PCR) tests they have to take on arrival in Singapore, and on day 14 of their arrival, before they finish their SHN. LONDON (REUTERS) - Mercedes have finally stopped the clock on Valtteri Bottas' Monaco Grand Prix tyre change after removing a stuck wheel from his car two days after it forced his retirement. The Formula One champions posted a video on Thursday of a crouching mechanic freeing up the front right wheel with special equipment at the factory on Tuesday morning. "The job's done. Onwards and upwards from here," Mercedes added on Twitter. "All eyes on Baku to come back smarter and stronger." It normally takes about a second and a half to remove a nut, change a wheel and put a new nut on. "The margin for error is very small and if just the slightest problem happens, it slows the stop down or potentially, in an absolute disastrous case, this happens," head of strategy James Vowles said in a debrief. SINGAPORE - An engineer with a doctorate was on Tuesday (Feb 9) sentenced to 18 days' jail for molesting a 39-year-old woman on an MRT train. Shen Ruifu, who holds a PhD in geotech, a branch of civil engineering, committed the offence on a south-bound train as it was travelling from Ang Mo Kio to Bishan at around 7.45am on Dec 12, 2018. The 54-year-old previously worked at the National University of Singapore and had left in 2015. Defence lawyer Raphael Louis told District Judge Marvin Bay that his client committed the act of molestation at the spur of the moment and the offence did not involve skin-to-skin contact. The lawyer added that it was Shen's first brush with the law. For molestation, he could have been jailed for up to two years and fined or caned. SINGAPORE (THE NEW PAPER) - An eight-year-old girl who was flung out of a van in a road accident in Woodlands last month woke up on Tuesday (Nov 3) after 11 days in a coma. Her father, Mr Eric Tan, 45, told The New Paper on Tuesday night that Lovelynn regained consciousness at about 4pm. "She cannot speak or respond yet. She just woke up and can only move the left side of her body," he said in Mandarin. Earlier in the day at about 7.30am, Mr Tan had posted an update on social media on his daughter's condition. He said the swelling in her brain had gone down and the blood clots were gradually dissolving. But the mobility on the right side of her body would be affected, and she is estimated to need a longer time to recover. "She will be required to stay in ICU (intensive care unit) for further observation," he wrote. She was one of four people injured in the accident involving a van driven by her uncle and a red Audi car on Woodlands Avenue 12 just after 8pm on Oct 23.
