A number of product launches were held during the fairs. Renowned Hong Kong athletes including track athlete So Wa-wai, six-time Paralympic Games gold medallist, made an appearance at the product launch.HKTDC Deputy Executive Director Sophia Chong said: "Although numerous sectors around the world, including the watch and clock industry, have been hard hit by the pandemic, we are pleased to see that affordable luxury watches are a hot pick in the market, and that watches featuring innovative technologies and sustainable elements are part of the new fashion trend. This year, the two fairs showcased a wide range of trendy, high-quality products from notable brands. Exhibitors were also able to capitalise on retail opportunities driven by the recent disbursement of the government's consumption vouchers." E-tailing presents new business opportunities, fairs give exhibitors a retail boostThe HKTDC conducted an on-site survey with exhibitors and buyers during the fairs to gauge the development trends in the watch and clock industry in 2023. The survey found that the majority of respondents considered e-tailing (37%) and the recovering purchasing power of customers (28%) to present the biggest business opportunities. Of the exhibitors surveyed, 39% of them are engaged in e-tailing businesses, while 33% indicated an intention to invest resources in developing an e-tailing business over the next two years to capture more orders. Regarding product trends, respondents expected smart watches (47%) to be the most popular watch category in 2023, followed by mechanical watches (15%) and digital analogue watches (14%).In addition, some exhibitors said that sustainability themed watches will be another key trend. Speaking at the MINI green watch series product launch during the fairs, Esther Wong, Founder and CEO of Acestar Concept Limited, said: "As people become more environmentally conscious, this green watch collection has become the talk of the town. Sales of the watch at the fairground did well and we have already sold about 1,000 pieces. A new buyer expressed interest in bringing MINI green watches to the United States and South American markets, while another new buyer from Mainland China is keen to cooperate with us by investing in the development of a new eco-friendly product. Overall, the response from both public visitors and trade buyers has been overwhelming."The two fairs were open to the general public this year, with a lively buying atmosphere at the fairground. The on-site survey revealed that the per capita consumption of public visitors was HK$1,146. Mike Lam, Chief Operating Officer of Mira Watch International Ltd, said the traffic at the fair was very good. "The average per capita spending by customers at our booth is around HK$4,000-5,000. A mechanical sports watch priced at HK$10,000 has sold particularly well. We expect this year's on-site sales turnover to reach HK$1 million." Click2Match helps industry players seize business opportunities This year's fairs adopted EXHIBITION+, a brand-new exhibition model integrating online and offline trade show formats, extending face-to-face interactions from physical exhibitions to an online platform. To help overseas buyers maintain contact with exhibitors, the HKTDC mobilised its 50 global offices to invite international buyers to engage in business discussions with exhibitors via video conferencing. In addition, the HKTDC utilises its smart business-matching platform, Click2Match, to generate AI-recommended leads for exhibitors and buyers until 18 September. The platform also provides functions such as a meeting planner, instant messaging, video conferencing and file sharing to facilitate communication between buyers and exhibitors. The online fairs will run until 6 October on hktdc.com Sourcing where trade buyers can continue their sourcing journey at their own convenience. The renowned Swiss brand Victorinox, famed for its army knives and sporty watches, was at the Watch & Clock Fair to source watch parts and components. Kelvin Lo, Head of Sourcing - Watches, Victorinox Dongguan Company Limited, said: "Through the HKTDC's Click2Match platform and its business-matching team, we set up physical meetings with six parts and components suppliers before the opening of the fair. The platform proved to be effective in helping us identify suitable suppliers in advance. Following business negotiations at the physical fair, we have been successful in finding five potential suppliers, one of which has adopted a brand-new technology to produce leather straps."Chit Tat Clock and Watch Company Limited was another exhibitor that was able to connect with overseas buyers via the Click2Match platform. The company's General Manager, Philip Lau, said the brand focused on selling its stock to consumers at the fair, helping to expand its retail business. In addition, the company arranged more than 20 online meetings with overseas buyers via the Click2Match platform to conduct business negotiations after the physical fairs, with Mr Lau saying he was satisfied with the results.Following a successful series of fairs over the summer, the HKTDC will hold the Hong Kong Electronics Fair (Autumn Edition), International ICT Expo, electronicAsia, Hong Kong International Lighting Fair (Autumn Edition) and Hong Kong International Outdoor and Tech Light Expo from 13 to 16 October, all of which will adopt the EXHIBITION+ hybrid model. This year's competition was again divided into the Open Group and the Student Group, with the respective themes of "Night" and "Race Against Time". Nearly 70 high-quality entries were received, with a judging panel of nine industry leaders and celebrities selecting winners. The Open Group champion was won by the Ballerina Watch Company Limited design "Geisha". The charcoal-coloured watch case features a sake glass and a geisha silhouette dial face handmade in sterling silver. Time is subtly shown in the middle of the geisha's fan, while traditional kimono patterns are printed on the back of the strap to echo the geisha design on the surface. First runner-up in the Open Group was clinched by Tam Kwok-tung for "StarTrack". Set against a backdrop of the night sky, the design features an "8" shape with stars telling the time at the top and an automatic winding rotor at the bottom. It is as if the complex mechanical movement of the rotor gives the stars a gravitational pull to guide it to tell the time. Meanwhile, the second runner-up spot went to Heromex Holdings Company Limited for its design "NOCTUS". Featuring a little field mouse as the hour hand and an owl as the minute hand, the two characters tell the fable of the forest as they revolve around the dial.In the Student Group, Yip Tsz-yan of SHAPE (DILWL) was declared champion for her design "Present". Operating income in April fell 13.1% year on year as a result of COVID-19 pandemic controls. During the first half, the industry recorded a loss of Rmb170 million, a decrease of 31.2% compared to the same period last year. The industry's profits dropped 15.2% to Rmb450 million in the first half of 2022.Mr Zhang said the mainland's cumulative watch and clock exports showed an overall upward trend between January and July. Cumulative exports reached US$2.68 billion, up 12.1% year on year. With the exception of February, exports showed a month-on-month increase, indicating a positive outlook overall. Imports, however, showed a general downward trend. From January to July, cumulative imports were down 24.8% on the same period last year at US$2.51 billion. He concluded that the performance of the mainland's watch and clock industry remained steady in comparison with last year, with a 22% reduction in losses and a slight decrease in revenue from the main businesses. With the consumer market recovering gradually since June, the industry's productivity and sales have shown a significant improvement, with an uptick in profitability, indicating the market is picking up.Japanese watch exports boosted by demand for high-priced mechanical watchesThe watch and clock industry in Japan is primarily driven by exports, particularly of watches. In the first half of this year, the industry saw a remarkable recovery, with growth almost returning to the 2019 pre-pandemic level. Citing statistics from association members, Mari Yamazaki, General Manager of the Japan Clock and Watch Association, said Japan's domestic watch sales volume fell 3% year on year with the biggest decline in the digital quartz watches and mechanical watches. The results were mainly attributable to decreased demand from tourists as a result of Japan's stringent anti-pandemic entry restrictions. Despite the drop in sales quantity, overall sales rose 2% year on year as watch values rose. Sales of high-priced mechanical watches grew 34% year on year due to increased demand. Ms Yamazaki added that as various countries gradually eased their anti-pandemic restrictions, Japan's watch exports rose 13% in quantity and 20% in value year on year, fuelled primarily by the North American market. Thanks to the satisfactory export performance, Japan's overall watch sales increased 12% in value and 13% in quantity year on year in the first half of 2022.In terms of clocks, while the domestic sales volume and value in Japan fell nearly 10% year on year during this period, global exports rose 8% in quantity and a remarkable 68% in value thanks to the economic recovery in overseas markets. Ms Yamazaki said overall clock quantity sold fell by 9% year on year but total sales increased 1% to 8.5 billion yen, with a downward year on year trend. This was due to weak domestic consumption in Japan.Swiss watch exports surpass 11bn Swiss francs for first timeGlobal Swiss watch exports enjoyed a strong performance in the first half, led by precious-metal or steel mechanical watches. According to Thierry Dubois, Managing Director, APAC, Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry FH, the downturn driven by macroeconomic and geopolitical issues as well as the pandemic had a limited impact on Switzerland's watch sector. In the first six months, Swiss watch exports grew 11.9% year on year to more than 11 billion Swiss francs (US$11.23 billion). The export quantity rose to 7.2 million units, up 3% year on year. Quartz watches recorded the most noticeable growth, followed by mechanical watches, with the performance of watches priced at more than 3,000 Swiss francs showing the greatest strength. Mr Dubois noted that although Swiss watch exports had previously been sluggish, the performance had improved since last year.He added that Asia accounted for nearly half (49%) of Swiss watch exports in the first half of this year, with Europe (30%) and the United States (19%) being the second- and third-largest markets respectively. Most markets showed clear growth in demand. The US (+31.4%) led the way, followed by France (+36.5%), the United Kingdom (+31.8%), Germany (+25.4%), Singapore (21.4%) and Japan (+19.5%). However, the market in Mainland China was significantly disrupted by anti-pandemic measures in April and May, resulting in a drop in sales (-26.3%) during the first half of this year. Hong Kong also recorded a drop (-11.5%) during this period.Mr Dubois concluded that prospects for the Swiss watch industry remained optimistic this year, despite uncertainties in macroeconomic prospects. He predicted watches will continue to benefit from sustained demand and the appeal of luxury goods. However, challenges such as raw-material supply, rising energy and transport costs, and manpower shortages will have an impact on turnover. The Hong Kong International Watch Forum was held as a webinar on 5 September. A recording of the full event is available on the fair websites.Insiders reveal insights on trends and prospects at Asian Watch ConferenceThe annual Asian Watch Conference will be held tomorrow (8 September) under the theme "Watches Beyond - Transformation and Reinvention". According to our on-site survey, public visitors who were interviewed spent an average of HK$1,059 per person at the fairs."Many exhibitors agreed that the fairs had helped them tap into the retail market. Philip Lau, General Manager of Chit Tat Clock and Watch Company Limited, said he had met with five buyers from European and US buying offices in Hong Kong. His company offered wholesale prices to attract local consumers and received a better-than-expected response. "These consumers have high purchasing power and strong confidence in the quality of our watches. We estimate that our sales turnover at the fair will be around HK$200,000-300,000," Mr Lau said.Another exhibitor, Gary Ching, Co-founder of ANPASSA Watch Company, said that within just a few hours of the opening of the fairs, two watch retailers had expressed interest in ANPASSA's watches and started discussing cooperation. "We also attracted the attention of many local consumers. HONG KONG, Sep 7, 2021 - (ACN Newswire via SEAPRWire.com) - Jointly organised by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC), the Hong Kong Watch Manufacturers Association and the Federation of Hong Kong Watch Trades and Industries, the special edition of the 40th Hong Kong Watch & Clock Fair and the ninth Salon de TE begin tomorrow at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. To help industry participants grasp the latest market information and trends and formulate strategies for post-pandemic growth, the three organisations hosted the Hong Kong International Watch Forum on 30 August. The forum invited watch association representatives from Mainland China, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan and Switzerland to share on the watch industry's current trade performance in the region and offer perspectives that can help the global watchmaking industry continue to move forward.Daniel Tsai, Chairman of the Federation of Hong Kong Watch Trades & Industries Ltd (centre), with Student Group merit award winners Chan Yin-kei (R), Lau Ka-ki and Ho Wing-kiu; champion Yip Tsz-yan; and first runner-up Ho See-long (L)"Insight", the creation of Student Group champion Yip Tsz-yanThe "Global Luxury Watch Investment and Market Outlook in Mainland China" forum on 10 September will feature insights from John Ng, Horologer of Montres S.A.Swiss representative - US demand has also reboundedEven though the pandemic has battered the global economy and posed significant challenges for the watch and clock industry, the speakers' view was that markets are steadily recovering. They noted that imports, exports, production volumes and profits have all rebounded from the depths of 2020, although still remain shy of 2019 levels.Thierry Dubois, the representative from Switzerland's Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry FH, explained that Swiss watch exports during the first six months of 2021 have improved year-on-year. In 2020, the country's total exports dropped 21.7% compared to the previous year. However, the total export value remained on a par with that of 2019, dipping only 0.5% to 10.6 billion Swiss francs. This was thanks to the Mainland China market, which has seen a surge in demand for luxury Swiss watches since last summer. Demand from the US also began picking up from March this year, which was sooner than the Swiss watch industry anticipated.Mr Dubois pointed out that Asia now represents the largest market overall for Swiss watch exports, with Mainland China being the leading market, followed by the US, Hong Kong, Japan and Singapore. He foresees that by 2025, the mainland's consumption will pull further ahead and account for 46-48% of all luxury watch purchases. He added that the pandemic has created new consumer habits, with prolonged lockdowns giving consumers more time to reflect on their watch purchases and make new discoveries. "We have observed that online sales quickly replaced physical sales, as shops had to close during the lockdowns. In 2019, online sales represented 10-15% of total sales of luxury products. We expect this will rise to 30% by 2025. At the same time, the importance of social media for communication, interaction and sales has continued to grow. Livestreaming has exploded, and the trend is particularly visible in Asia. With the increase in e-commerce, the demand for efficient logistics and delivery has also climbed, because today's online shoppers expect swift product deliveries once they have placed an order," said Mr Dubois. He remarked that there has also been a notable increase in the demand for "pre-owned" watches - or watches that have been possessed by someone else - which is expected to rise by 15-20% within four years.German representative - physical stores remain attractiveGuido Grohmann, the representative from Germany's Federal Associations of Jewellery, Watches, Silverware and Supplying Industry e.V. (BVSU), said the country's exports of watches, clocks and parts saw a significant year-on-year decline of 14.1% in 2020, including falls of 7.5% in the European Union (EU) and 16.4% in Asia. The situation was largely echoed in imports. In 2020, German imports of watches, clocks and parts fell 6.2% compared to the previous year, with the biggest decline registered in Asia, at 8.7%. Despite this, imports from the EU rose 28.5%, with logistics operating more smoothly among EU countries. In 2021, both exports and imports continued to strengthen during the first five months with imports faring even better than the same period in 2019.While e-commerce continues to gain popularity, Mr Grohmann said that offline stores are still maintaining their attractiveness. He remarked that even though lower-priced products were sold online during the pandemic, consumers still preferred going to stores to buy high-end products as it allows them to try out the luxury goods. As for logistics, he noted, "The COVID crisis has reflected that we still have huge problems within the supply chain, especially in shipping parts. Industries are looking into reinventing local suppliers in Europe to attain a more secure supply chain. It would be much better if the world's governments [could] focus on how to re-enact the fast and solid supply chain that we used to have. From the watch industry's perspective, we have to discuss this on a global level. It is difficult, but it can be solved."The Hong Kong International Watch Forum was held as a webinar on 6 September. A replay will soon be available on the Watch & Clock Fair website.Hong Kong Watch & Clock Competition identifies local design talentTo raise the design standards of the Hong Kong watch industry, nurture local designers and inject new impetus into the industry, the HKTDC collaborated with the Hong Kong Watch Manufacturers Association Ltd and the Federation of Hong Kong Watch Trades & Industries Ltd to organise the 38th Hong Kong Watch & Clock Competition. This year's competition was once again divided into the Open Group and the Student Group, adopting the themes of "Minimalism" and "Live Fully" respectively. About 90 high-quality entries were received, from which a panel of 10 judges from various sectors selected the winning entries. The results of the competition have been announced and the champion in the Open Group was Tam Kwok-tung for his design titled "SPACE_BAR". Housed in a transparent container, the design beautifully encapsulates the simplicity of the watch's movements. The first runner-up prize was claimed by the Ballerina Watch Company Limited and its design "Singing Bowl". The design forgoes a traditional watch crown to accentuate the unified and symmetrical watch case design. Second runner-up was Wong Ting-bong for his design "D012". The unique open design of the minute dial is topped with a linear second hand, which perfectly represents the concept of points, lines and surfaces as the hands move.In the Student Group, the Hong Kong Design Institute's Yip Tsz-yan was crowned champion for her design "Insight". Her watch's bezel and glass are made with a diamond-cut design, and the case-back contains fancy glass that refracts light and reflects colours. Ho See-long from the Technological and Higher Education Institute of Hong Kong claimed first runner-up with her design titled "Serendipity". The design reflects the idea that the happiness and fortune people seek may already be surrounding them and that every trivial matter in daily life can be a miracle. The second runner-up prize was taken by another Hong Kong Design Institute student, Pui Hong-yiu, whose design "Expedition" drew inspiration from the film Around the World in 80 Days. The watch's oversized design symbolises the confidence and motivation for taking an expedition, while the mini globes on the face can display the wearer's location. The champions of the Open Group and Student Group will be sponsored to attend the INHORGENTA MUNICH 2022 trade fair in Germany. All the winning and finalist entries will also be displayed during the Watch & Clock Fair to showcase Hong Kong's design prowess to global industry participants and the general public.Renowned watchmaker shares tips on luxury watch investment in Mainland ChinaIn addition to the above events, the annual Asian Watch Conference will be held on 9 September during the Watch & Clock Fair. BUDAPEST • Caeleb Dressel's record time disappeared from the scoreboard at Duna Arena almost as fast as he could check it, vanishing as if it were an unsightly stain wiped clean by an unseen hand. The scoreboard was not malfunctioning. In fact, it was working to perfection. While the potential of six-figure paydays was probably the most powerful draw in luring some of the world's top professionals to the International Swimming League's (ISL) bubble in Budapest recently, so, too, was a format that put racing above records. After each event, the scoreboard purposely flashes the results for only a few seconds and then erases them, leaving only the order of finish beside the racers' names. The change has confused fans, but the athletes aren't complaining. In a year of closed pools, disrupted training and cancelled competitions, it has been liberating, several top swimmers said, to be freed from the tyranny of times. "It is a huge relief to not be able to really compare times to what I'm used to doing," said Abbey Weitzeil, who has twice broken the American record in the 50m freestyle here. "It's a huge opportunity for us to turn our brain off the clock and just race." For Dressel, who was poised for stardom at the Olympics before the Tokyo Games were pushed back to next summer, the ISL races have transported him back in time, to his swimming origins at recreational league meets in Jacksonville, Florida. Back then, he got his start by jumping into an unoccupied lane at one of his older brother's meets, stroking to the other side of the pool and exclaiming: "I won a medal! I won a medal!" Many more medals would follow as Dressel rewrote the national age-group record books. But he soon found himself consumed by the clock, distilling hours and days and weeks of training down the fractions of a second he needed to break the marks then held by 23-time Olympic gold medallist Michael Phelps. Last year, Dressel broke his first long-course world record in the 100m butterfly. But the 24-year-old said he was convinced he could have lowered the record two years earlier if not for his preoccupation with the clock. "I was so caught up in Michael's time instead of what I was capable of going," he added. PURE FUN It's like an amusement park for swimmers and I'm loving it at the ISL this season, but we want to win this as a team - that's the end goal. CAELEB DRESSEL, US swimmer, on his Cali Condors team entering the final day of competition in top spot. Last Saturday, he set short-course world records in the 100m butterfly - his time of 47.78sec broke South African Chad le Clos' mark of 48.08 - and 50m freestyle - he rewrote his mark by 0.08 after recording 20.16sec. The ISL races, he and other swimmers said, have been a welcome diversion from record mania and personal-best blues. "It was a really exciting day and I'm so pleased with the times," the American told the BBC. "It's like an amusement park for swimmers and I'm loving it at the ISL this season, but we want to win this as a team - that's the end goal." Lia Neal, his Cali Condors teammate and a two-time Olympic medallist said: "Mentally it gives you a break from overemphasising times and numbers. Rather than constantly trying to go a best time, you can be in the moment." The problem is that elite swimmers are programmed to measure their daily progress by the ticks of pace clocks, scoreboards and stopwatches. From the time youngsters cast their eyes on "A" standards or age-group records, an obsession with the clock is swimming's time-honoured tradition. The downside of always racing against the clock is that the clock ultimately wins and everyone eventually hits a plateau. Not even Phelps was immune; while he continued to collect Olympic medals by the handful late in his career, he did not post a best time in any of his primary events after 2009. In a year when simply finding an open pool has sometimes been difficult, Dressel said that he had embraced the ISL because it has offered the rare chance to keep his focus where he believes it belongs. The records - the world and Olympic champion became the first swimmer to break 50 seconds in the 100m individual medley last Monday - have still come, but they have been a bonus, not the goal. "It truly is about racing, the age-group mindset," he said. "I don't want to ever lose that, even with money getting involved, even with media getting involved, all the travel and appearances. I want to keep the same mindset of a 12-year-old." NYTIMES, REUTERS
