ABU DHABI (REUTERS) - Max Verstappen donned golden shoes as he got back behind the wheel for tyre testing in Abu Dhabi on Tuesday (Dec 14) after winning the Formula One world championship for Red Bull. The 24-year-old Dutch driver, who beat Mercedes' seven times world champion Lewis Hamilton controversially in Sunday's season-ending race, completed 124 laps of Yas Marina on the new 18-inch tyres for 2022. Mercedes are still deciding whether to appeal the result of the race and have until Thursday, the night Verstappen is due to receive the champion's trophy at a gala awards ceremony in Paris. Verstappen overtook Hamilton seven corners from the end on Sunday after the safety car rules were tweaked, giving him an opportunity that Mercedes thought he should not have been allowed. George Russell turned out for Mercedes, starting the next stage of his career after leaving Williams and replacing Valtteri Bottas. Team reserve and Formula E champion Nyck de Vries joined the Briton and set the fastest lap as young drivers were also given track time. Australia's new Formula Two champion Oscar Piastri completed 131 laps for Alpine, who also had regular race driver Esteban Ocon testing the tyres. Guanyu Zhou, who will become China's first Formula One driver next season, tested for Alfa Romeo with Bottas also making his debut with the Swiss-based team. McLaren gave Mexican IndyCar driver Pato O'Ward his first proper run out in F1 machinery, with Daniel Ricciardo also completing a day of testing before heading for quarantine in Australia. "What a car... I was expecting something ridiculous, but this is more than ridiculous," O'Ward said of the experience. "I was struggling to keep my head up at the end. "Nothing I've driven comes close to this, not even a hint of close. It is unbelievable." New Zealander Liam Lawson tested for AlphaTauri, American Logan Sergeant with Williams and Britain's Nick Yelloly at Aston Martin. Ferrari tested Russian Robert Shwartzman and Italian Antonio Fuoco. TURIN, ITALY (AFP) - Alexander Zverev downed Novak Djokovic in a thrilling last-four clash to end the world number one's bid for a record-equalling sixth ATP Finals title on Saturday (Nov 20) and set up a final against Daniil Medvedev. The German edged to a 7-6 (7/4), 4-6, 6-3 success in Turin and will face reigning champion Medvedev, who beat Casper Ruud in the other semi, for the trophy on Sunday. It was a disappointing end to a remarkable season for Djokovic, who fell one match short of becoming the first man to win a calendar Grand Slam since 1969 when he lost the US Open final to Medvedev. The 20-time major champion was hoping to draw level with Roger Federer on six season-ending championship titles this week in Italy. But Zverev, who also beat the 34-year-old in the Olympics semi-finals in Tokyo, proved to be a bridge too far for Djokovic again. TURIN (AFP) - Defending champion Daniil Medvedev recovered from a set down to defeat Poland's Hubert Hurkacz on Sunday (Nov 14) on the opening day of the ATP Finals in Turin. The Russian second seed triumphed 6-7 (5/7), 6-3, 6-4 over seventh seeded Hurkacz. "I had zero break points to save, so in a way I was never under pressure," said US Open champion Medvedev who fired 15 aces in the match. "I had only two games on Hubert's serve where I had break points. Super happy to make this work and that I managed to get both breaks." Medvedev has now won 23 of his last 26 matches. Later Sunday, German third seed Alexander Zverev faces sixth-seeded Matteo Berrettini of Italy. This year's ATP Finals are being played in Turin for the first time after being switched from London. GUADALAJARA, MEXICO (REUTERS) - Anett Kontaveit's outstanding late season form continued on Wednesday (Nov 11) as she rolled past Barbora Krejcikova 6-3 6-4 in the first match of the WTA Finals in Guadalajara. The 25-year-old Estonian captured the 30-minute first set with an ace out wide and sealed the win when Krejcikova sent a backhand into the net on match point. Kontaveit, who was the final singles player to secure her place in the eight-player tournament, claimed four WTA titles this year to surge to world number eight and has now won 11 straight matches. French Open champion Krejcikova, who is the only reigning Grand Slam champion in the competition, never found a rhythm on the purple court in the high-altitude Mexican city. Former world number ones Garbine Muguruza and Karolina Pliskova will play in the evening session. The WTA Finals were not held last year due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
LINZ, AUSTRIA (REUTERS) - US Open champion Emma Raducanu has appointed German Torben Beltz as her new coach, the Briton said after she was beaten in her opening match at the Linz Open in Austria on Tuesday (Nov 9). Raducanu, 18, had been without a coach since she parted ways with Andrew Richardson two weeks after her surprise triumph at Flushing Meadows in September, where she became the first qualifier to win a major. "It's obviously a great privilege to be working with such an experienced coach. I'm definitely very excited to work with him throughout the pre-season and into next year," Raducanu, who had been the top seed in Linz, told reporters following her 6-1 6-7(0) 7-5 defeat by Chinese qualifier Wang Xinyu. "Very positive feeling about all the work there is to come." Beltz, who recently split with compatriot Angelique Kerber, led the former world number one to the Australian Open and US Open titles in 2016. "He's obviously worked with Kerber who is such a great player and has done extremely well and won three Slams and I think that experience definitely helps with someone as inexperienced as me..." added Raducanu. "Also he's a really positive, cheerful guy who brings great energy to the team so I think that's also important when you're travelling on the road for quite a long time on the tour." The 44-year-old also coached Croatia's Donna Vekic between 2017 and 2020, helping her break into the top 20 before rejoining Kerber's team last year. MOSCOW (REUTERS) - US Open champion Daniil Medvedev has withdrawn from next week's Kremlin Cup in Moscow in order to focus on the remainder of the season, the Russian said in a statement on Friday (Oct 15). Medvedev, who beat Novak Djokovic in last month's Flushing Meadows final to claim his maiden Grand Slam title, crashed out in the fourth round at Indian Wells this week, losing to Bulgaria's Grigor Dimitrov. "The tournament in Moscow is a special opportunity to play at home with Russian fans. I entered the tournament and hoped to play it, but due to such a busy schedule of tournaments in 2021, I felt that I was not ready to physically play 100%," said the world number two. "This decision was hard for me, but I had to make it in order to finish the season with good results." US Open women's winner Emma Raducanu pulled out of the event on Thursday. INDIAN WELLS, CALIFORNIA (REUTERS) - Red carpet galas, top-tier endorsement deals and hitting with British Royalty - the past three weeks have been a whirlwind for 18-year-old US Open champion Emma Raducanu. But now the British sensation says she is eager to get back to business. "I'd say it has been a very cool three weeks," Raducanu told reporters in Indian Wells on Tuesday (Oct 5) as she prepares for her first tournament since her historic triumph at Flushing Meadows. "I got to experience some great things that I probably never would have been able to do before," said Raducanu, who recently attended star-studded events including the Met Gala in New York and the premier of the new James Bond film in London. "But after that, I just went straight back to training and focusing on this competition and the upcoming ones I've got lined up." Raducanu last month became the first qualifier to win a major when she beat fellow teenager Leylah Fernandez of Canada at the tournament, where she never dropped a set. With the victory, she became the first British woman to win a Grand Slam tournament in 44 years, creating a frenzy in her home country. She said that while she appreciates the support, she is determined to stay focused, opting mostly to stay home with her family since returning to England. "I got some really cool invitations, and it felt nice to receive everyone's kind messages, but I didn't really get too caught up in it," she said. "I just focused on my tennis and my training." She singled out retired British player Tim Henman as being a key pillar of support at the US Open. In Indian Wells, where she has a first round bye, Raducanu is on a potential third-round collision course with her tennis idol, two-time Grand Slam champion Simona Halep. NEW YORK (REUTERS) - US Open champion Emma Raducanu will play in her first tournament since stunning the tennis world at Flushing Meadows after being handed a wildcard for next month’s WTA 1000 tournament at Indian Wells, organisers said on Tuesday (Sept 28). The 18-year-old Briton became the first qualifier to win a Grand Slam earlier this month when she beat fellow teenager Leylah Fernandez of Canada in straight sets. “2021 US Open Champion and rising WTA Tour star Emma Raducanu has been awarded a wildcard into the BNP Paribas Open, a combined ATP Masters 1000 and WTA 1000 event to be held Oct 4–17, 2021 at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden,” organisers said in a statement. Her entry into the Indian Wells tournament, often called the “fifth major”, will allow her to compete for the 1,000 ranking points up for grabs and possibly give her an outside shot at qualifying for the season-ending WTA Finals in Guadalajara. Raducanu enters the Indian Wells draw a day after world number one Ash Barty withdrew from the tournament, while former champions Naomi Osaka and Serena Williams are also sitting it out. Raducanu won the US Open without dropping a set, climbing more than 100 places to 22nd in the world rankings since her maiden Grand Slam victory. She is now the British number one. Her victorious campaign also prompted the Tennis Hall of Fame to add her outfit from her impressive run to their collection. The teenager said last week she was seeking a new coach after announcing she would no longer be working with former Davis Cup player Andrew Richardson as she targets more success on the WTA Tour.
