MANCHESTER, UNITED KINGDOM (AFP) - Manchester United were held 1-1 by Young Boys on Wednesday (Dec 8) as interim boss Ralf Rangnick blooded a host of youngsters in the Champions League. With United already assured of top spot in Group F, Rangnick rested all of his key players, making 11 changes from the side that beat Crystal Palace in the first game of his reign. Mason Greenwood gave a disjointed United the perfect start, but Fabian Rieder's long-range strike just before half-time earned a point for the visitors, which was not enough to keep alive their chances of dropping into the Europa League. Greenwood, 20, was the senior member of a front three also featuring 19-year-olds Amad Diallo and Anthony Elanga. Rangnick comes with a reputation for trusting youth. He got an early taste of Greenwood's predatory instincts as the striker acrobatically fired home Luke Shaw's low cross just nine minutes in. Juan Mata, a Spanish veteran at the other end of his career, was handed just his second start of the season. Mata should have doubled United's lead when he fired too close to Guillaume Faivre after more excellent work by Greenwood. United fans have been clamouring for Donny Van de Beek to be given a regular run in the starting line-up in recent weeks. The Dutchman was consistently overlooked by the sacked Ole Gunnar Solskjaer but he did little to force his way into Rangnick's plans with an error for the equaliser. Van de Beek's intended pass for Aaron Wan-Bissaka was intercepted by Rieder, who then fired into the top corner. Young Boys' win over United on the opening night of the group had the Red Devils sweating over their progress. They needed a barrage of late goals to take 10 points from their games with Atalanta and Villarreal. The Swiss champions pressed after the break in search of another famous victory that would have kept alive their hopes of finishing third and reaching the Europa League knockout stages, depending on the result when Atalanta and Villarreal face off in a rescheduled clash on Thursday. The German handed a club debut to third-choice goalkeeper Tom Heaton at the age of 35 and brought on three more teenagers Teden Mengi, Zidane Iqbal and Charlie Savage, son of former Wales international Robbie Savage. Elanga had the best chance to win the game on the counter-attack from Mata's unselfish pass, but the Swedish under-21 international could not beat Faivre with a weak finish.
SINGAPORE - A male dance instructor allegedly molested two 10-year-old boys in different primary schools on separate occasions. The Singaporean man, now 41, is accused of five counts of molestation committed between 2016 and last year. He allegedly targeted one boy twice and the other child three times. The man's identity, as well as details about the schools and the boys, cannot be disclosed because of a gag order. Responding to queries from The Straits Times on Monday (Nov 8), the Ministry of Education (MOE) said that the man has since been deregistered from its registry of instructors and is no longer engaged by any school. Its spokesman said: "MOE is committed to providing a safe learning environment for students. "MOE takes a serious view of instructors whose conduct compromises the safety and well-being of our students and will not hesitate to take firm action against them, including immediate termination of their services and permanent debarment from providing their services in schools." The man is said to have molested one of the boys twice in a primary school in 2016. He is accused of molesting the second child in another primary school in 2019 and last year. On Feb 3 last year, the man allegedly targeted this second boy in a school bus travelling from the school. He is expected to plead guilty to his offences on Dec 13. For each count of molesting a child below 14, an offender can be jailed for up to five years and fined or caned. BERN, SWITZERLAND (REUTERS) - Manchester United coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said poor discipline cost his side in their 2-1 Champions League defeat to Young Boys on Tuesday (Sept 14), but insisted there was plenty of time left to turn things around. United had taken an early lead through Cristiano Ronaldo and appeared on course to get this season's Champions League campaign off to a winning start, but Young Boys turned things around in dramatic style in the second half. Aaron Wan-Bissaka's 35th-minute sending off proved costly, with no side going on to win the Champions League previously after losing their opening match in the competition's history. "Of course, discipline is a huge part of tournament football," Solskjaer said. "If this was a knockout game and we got knocked out of the competition because we went down to 10 men, everyone would be kicking ourselves. "We're fortunate it is the first game of the group and have loads of time to bounce back from it. "We know we've given ourselves a more difficult task. We've lost the opportunity to get three points but we've got two home games next and got to focus on those two." The winning goal in the 95th minute came about after a defensive mistake from substitute Jesse Lingard, who woefully underhit a back pass. Solskjaer, however, refused to blame the winger for the defeat. "With Jesse, no footballer likes making mistakes but it's obviously part and parcel of the game," Solskjaer added. "We're humans, every footballer makes mistakes, we'll learn from it, he'll learn from it. He'll pick himself up and be ready to go on Sunday (against West Ham)." Young Boys coach David Wagner was delighted with his side's famous victory. "We showed what we can do, we deserved it," Wagner said. "It is an incredible night for this club. You can see what it means to the fans, after they have been kept away for so long." SINGAPORE - A jobless man who housed two young brothers and their mother at his flat, but sexually abused the boys during their two-month stay, was sentenced to 18 years' jail and 24 strokes of the cane on Tuesday (April 13). The man, who was the godfather of the two boys, had pleaded guilty last month to two charges of sexual assault by penetration for acts he committed between October and December 2019 on the older boy, who was 12 at the time. In sentencing, High Court judge Mavis Chionh said the man had preyed on a vulnerable victim who was unlikely to raise complaints. The older boy had a quiet personality and was described as being "slow", she noted. Justice Chionh added that the man had abused his position as a quasi-parental figure to the victim. "Instead of providing the victim with a home in which he could find comfort and security, the accused cynically abused the relationship of responsibility and trust he had with the victim. He exploited his access to the victim for the reprehensible purpose of satisfying his own sexual urges," she said. The judge took into account three other charges - one for sexually assaulting the older boy, one for molesting the younger boy, and one unrelated charge for causing hurt to a bus driver. The man cannot be named due to a gag order to protect the identities of the boys. The court earlier heard that in 2019, the boys and their mother were evicted from their home due to a family dispute. The boys' father had abandoned the family about 10 years ago. The trio stayed at a shelter while their rental flat application was pending, but the accused and his wife offered to take them in at their one-room flat. At the time, the boys were under a safety plan by a social service agency due to their mother's lack of adequate parenting skills. The mother raised the offer to care workers, who allowed the stay at the man's flat. Sometime later, the boys' grandfather also stayed there. The accused, whom the boys called "Papa", played video games with them, signed their school consent forms and was often left to care for them when the other adults were not around. He tried unsuccessfully to have the boys withdrawn from their school's after-care programme so that he could spend more time with them. During the stay, the man sodomised the older boy while the rest of the family were asleep. The court heard that the older boy slept on the same mattress as the man and his wife, while the younger boy slept on another mattress with his mother and grandfather. The older boy learnt that his brother had also been molested by the man, after the younger boy asked him if anything had happened to him. Initially, the two boys did not tell anyone about it as they were worried about being homeless. It was only after they had moved to their own rental flat in January last year that they told their mother about the sexual abuse. The matter was then reported to the police with the help of their social care worker. The boys are currently under the care of the Ministry of Social and Family Development. The older boy has since undergone eight psychotherapy counselling sessions for the trauma he suffered from the assaults. More on this topic Related Story Courts & Crime: Read more stories
SINGAPORE - The former principal of a secondary school who molested seven teenage boys on separate occasions at his workplace in 2017 was sentenced on Tuesday (Nov 17) to three years and eight months' jail. He will also receive seven strokes of the cane. The boys, who were between 13 and 15 years old at the time, were at-risk youths with family problems. They also had disciplinary records both in school and outside. The 48-year-old Singaporean offender had pleaded guilty in August to three counts of molestation involving three boys. Eight other charges for similar offences, including those linked to the other four boys, were taken into consideration during sentencing. Both the man and the school cannot be named due to a gag order to protect the boys' identities. The man ceased to be employed by the Ministry of Education (MOE) as of Jan 1, 2018. The court earlier heard that the boys were often called to the general office by the school's operation manager, to either serve their detention or be counselled and informed of disciplinary action. "Upon noticing a student... the accused would call him into his room to speak to the student. "At times, the accused would also inform the students' teachers of his intention to speak with them and fix a suitable time for them to meet him at his office on the pretext of discussing their disciplinary issues," Deputy Public Prosecutor Mark Yeo had described in earlier proceedings. The man would molest the boys in his office. The then-principal molested the boy after they entered his office. The DPP said: "(The boy) did not disclose the incident to anyone in its immediate aftermath. Given his disciplinary issues, he felt that no one would believe him if he were to disclose what the accused had done to him." By using a similar ruse, the man molested a 14-year-old boy in September 2017 and a 13-year-old boy the following month. In late October that year, the man molested another 14-year-old boy, who told another victim, a 15-year-old student, about his ordeal. On Oct 25, 2017, the two teenagers told the operations manager about their experience and the matter was reported to the MOE. An MOE officer alerted the police on Nov 6 that year, the court heard. For each count of molesting a child below 14 years old, an offender can be jailed for up to five years and fined or caned.
