HONG KONG (REUTERS) - China's hopes of qualifying for the World Cup suffered another blow on Thursday (Nov 11) as a header from Oman's Amjad Al Harthi 15 minutes from time earned a 1-1 draw with Li Tie's side. The Chinese, needing a win to keep pace with the teams above them in Group B of Asia's preliminaries for Qatar 2022, remain in fifth place in the six-nation standings, nine points behind leaders Saudi Arabia with four points from five games. Oman are fourth on seven points as the qualifiers reach the halfway point, but are now two points behind third-placed Japan. The top two finishers in each of the two groups in Asia's preliminaries qualify automatically for the finals, while the third-placed nations enter a series of playoffs for a possible fifth Asian berth at the World Cup. China took the lead through Wu Lei after 21 minutes when the striker netted for the third time in two matches at Sharjah Stadium, where Li's team have been forced to play their home matches due to strict quarantine regulations in China. The forward was quickest to react after Zhu Chenjie rose to meet Xu Xin's corner, with Wu poking in from seven metres. Luo Guofu almost doubled China's lead later in the half, only for Omani goalkeeper Faiyz Al Rashidi to save the Brazil-born striker's downward header at full stretch. Branko Ivankovic's side fought back in the second half and goalkeeper Yan Junling was unable to keep out Al Harthi's delicately flicked header 15 minutes from time. Saudi Arabia lead Group B by three points despite being held to a 0-0 draw by Australia in Sydney on Thursday, while Japan's 1-0 victory over Vietnam moved Hajime Moriyasu's side within a point of the second-placed Socceroos. In Group A, a late penalty earned Dick Advocaat's Iraq a 1-1 draw with Syria in Doha as they moved up to fourth place. Omar Al Somah had put the Syrians in front with a near-post volley 10 minutes from time but Amir Al Ammari converted a penalty six minutes later to equalise for Iraq after a lengthy VAR check following a foul on Ali Al Hamadi by Ahmad Ashkar. The draw was Iraq's fourth in five games and their tally of four points moves them ahead of the United Arab Emirates and within a point of third-placed Lebanon. Iran remain in pole position with 13 points following a late 2-1 win over the Lebanese, while South Korea are two points behind in second after they defeated the UAE 1-0 in Goyang.
PARIS (AFP) - Scott McTominay scored an injury-time winner as Scotland came from behind to claim a crucial 3-2 victory over Israel in World Cup qualifying on Saturday (Oct 9), while England thrashed Andorra 5-0 to stay on track to reach next year's global showpiece. The win takes Scotland four points clear of Israel in second place in Group F with three matches remaining as they bid to qualify for the World Cup for the first time since 1998. Group winners qualify automatically for next year's finals in Qatar, with the runners-up heading into the playoffs. Scotland trailed twice in the first half at Hampden Park to goals from PSV Eindhoven forward Eran Zahavi and Mu'nas Dabbur. John McGinn levelled once, but home striker Lyndon Dykes missed a penalty on the stroke of half-time. He made amends before the hour mark with an equaliser, awarded after a VAR review after the referee initially disallowed it for a high boot. A point would have been a decent result for Steve Clarke's men, but the hosts pushed for a winner which arrived in the 94th minute as Manchester United midfielder McTominay bundled in at the back post. The Scots still hold a slim chance of topping the group, trailing leaders Denmark, who cruised past Moldova 4-0 in Chisinau, by seven points. "We've got a few games left and we have to just remain focused. We wanted a win tonight and we got it," Dykes told Sky Sports. Much-changed England score five England manager Gareth Southgate rested key players including Harry Kane and Raheem Sterling as his second string impressed in a 5-0 thumping of Andorra. Ben Chilwell opened the scoring in the 17th minute, with the goal awarded by VAR after initially being disallowed for offside against Jadon Sancho. Bukayo Saka made the points safe before half-time and Roma striker Tammy Abraham made the most of a rare start by scoring in the 59th minute. Jack Grealish came off the bench and won a penalty which James Ward-Prowse saw saved, before turning in the rebound. Grealish rounded off the scoring with a fine individual effort for his first international goal after collecting goalkeeper Sam Johnstone's long kick. It was a busy night for Kateryna Monzul, the first female official to referee an England match, with five yellow cards as well as the penalty award. England remain four points clear at the top of Group I after second-placed Albania won 1-0 against Hungary in Budapest. Poland are a point further back in third after seeing off San Marino 5-0 and next face Albania in Tirana on Tuesday. Sweden maintain chase of Spain Sweden moved within a point of Group B leaders Spain thanks to a 3-0 win over Kosovo in Solna. Alexander Isak scored a magnificent goal to cap a brilliant individual display, with Robin Quaison and Emil Forsberg also on the scoresheet. Sweden also have a game in hand on Spain, who they visit in their final qualifier next month. Greece kept their hopes of pushing into the top two themselves alive as two late goals secured a 2-0 win in Georgia. The Greeks remain unbeaten and are three points behind Sweden and also have a game in hand on Spain. Switzerland remain close on the coattails of European champions Italy after edging out 10-man Northern Ireland 2-0 in Geneva. The Swiss are three points behind Italy in Group C with a game in hand and lead third-placed Northern Ireland by six points. Elsewhere, the Republic of Ireland finally won for the first time in Group A by brushing aside Azerbaijan 3-0 in Baku. Serbia moved above Portugal to the top of the table with a 1-0 win over Luxembourg. Ukraine ended a run of five straight draws with a 2-1 victory in Finland to consolidate their grip on second place in Group D. The Euro 2020 quarter-finalists are two points ahead of Bosnia and Herzegovina, who beat Kazakhstan 2-0, and four points behind France.
LONDON (REUTERS) - West Ham United blew their chance to apply real pressure in the race for a Premier League top-four finish as they slumped to a 1-0 home defeat by an Everton side who maintained their European qualification hopes on Sunday (May 9). Dominic Calvert-Lewin's 24th-minute goal proved decisive against a West Ham side who huffed and puffed but never really hit their stride on a crucial afternoon. The closest West Ham came to an equaliser was when Vladimir Coufal's shot hit the post and Jarrod Bowen could not bundle in the rebound from point-blank range. Everton hit the post late on through Josh King and they hung on for the win that keeps them in the frame for a European spot. West Ham remained in fifth place with 58 points, five points behind fourth-placed Leicester City with three games remaining. Liverpool are only a point behind West Ham with a game in hand. Everton are eighth with 55 points and have four games left.
LONDON (REUTERS) - Tottenham Hotspur rode their luck in the quest for a top-four finish in the Premier League with a 1-0 victory at Fulham on Thursday (March 4) thanks to an own-goal by Tosin Adarabioyo and the intervention of the Video Assistant Referee (VAR). Victory dragged Tottenham back into the race for a Champions League spot with Jose Mourinho's eighth-placed side on 42 points from 26 matches, four points behind Everton in fourth, ahead of Sunday's clash with Crystal Palace. "In this period we need three points. Fulham are a very good team," Tottenham's Toby Alderweireld told BT Sport. "We should be better on the ball but without it we did everything we could to keep a clean sheet." Seconds after an unmarked Harry Kane failed to head his team in front, Tottenham took the lead from a quick counter-attack in the 19th minute when Son Heung-min's cross was met by Dele Alli before going over the line following a touch by Adarabioyo. Fulham began the second half brightly and thought they had equalised through Josh Maja but his effort was chalked off by VAR after Davinson Sanchez kicked the ball onto Mario Lemina's hand as Tottenham looked to clear. "For the players and maybe referees it's a difficult one because some are high intensity and not on purpose but they get given," Spurs midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg said. "As players I think what we wish is some kind of consistency in the reviews with the handball situations but I haven't seen it so I can't say if it was on or not." Midfielder Alli looked sharp in his first league start since the opening day of the season and combined well with Son late in the first half, but the forward was unable to head in the England international's cross from a tight angle. Fulham pushed on after going behind as Antonee Robinson weaved his way into Spurs' penalty area in the dying seconds of the first half and found Maja who set up Lemina, but the Gabon midfielder's shot flew over the crossbar. Fulham stayed 18th in the table and deep in relegation trouble, three points behind Newcastle United and Brighton & Hove Albion.
