Small, Efficient 5G Multisector Antenna Indoor Base Station Achieves World’s First Demonstration using 28GHz

TOKYO, Jan 30, 2023 - (JCN Newswire via SEAPRWire.com) - Yokohama National University, NTT DOCOMO, INC., NIHON DENGYO KOSAKU Co., Ltd. and Fujitsu Ltd. announced today that they successfully demonstrated a 5G indoor base station incorporating a multisector antenna using the 28GHz band on January 27. The device, which incorporates circuitry just 1/10th the size of a conventional indoor base station, is extra small for easy installation, minimizes energy consumption and achieves highly efficient signal propagation, all of which will contribute to the realization of high-quality connectivity indoors. The demonstration, in which a conventional 5G base station control unit communicated with the new device via a 28GHz signal, confirmed that a single multisector antenna can receive radio waves in all directions using radio beam control. DOCOMO previously measured the directivity of a single element in a multisector antenna in 2022, but the DOCOMO believes that this was the world's first demonstration to use a multisector antenna in a 5G base station equipped for radio beam control.A multisector antenna divides its surrounding 360-degree space into multiple areas (sectors) for transmitting and receiving radio waves simultaneously and independently in each sector. The antenna used in the demonstration contained 12 directional elements arranged in a radial pattern, each of which effectively transmitted and received radio waves in a specific direction. A Yagi-Uda antenna developed originally for television broadcasting was deployed for the high-frequency band. Conventionally, multiple multielement planar-array antennas are required to propagate high-frequency radio waves to all areas of an indoor environment, requiring large circuitry that consumes significant amounts of energy and demands ample space for installation.By using 5G-standardized beam-switching technology, however, the newly demonstrated multisector antenna incorporated in a small base station managed to achieve high gain in all directions with minimized energy consumption. Installing the envisioned device on ceilings will help to deliver high-frequency radio waves effectively throughout each room, thus reducing the number of base stations needed to construct high-quality indoor communication environments.High-frequency radio waves have strong linearity and their strength tends to diminish easily, making it difficult to deliver such waves over wide areas. Conventionally, four or more base station antennas are required to transmit radio waves in all directions in a room, but the recent demonstration has now shown that just one multisector antenna can handle the task.Going forward, DOCOMO plans to conduct verification tests using the new base station in various indoor environments, based on which it intends to finalize the antenna circuitry and incorproate it in commercial base stations for the establishment of high-quality indoor communication environments at a reduced cost. In addition, the Yokohama National University, DOCOMO, NIHON DENGYO KOSAKU and Fujitsu will work towards 5G Evolution & 6G in order to achieve compatibility with future mobile networks' high-frequency millimeter and terahertz waves for the further enhancement of indoor connectivity.DOCOMO will introduce these initiatives at docomo Open House '23, which will be held online from Thursday, February 2.For more information, visit www.docomo.ne.jp/english/info/media_center/pr/2023/0130_01.htmlAbout Yokohama National UniversityYOKOHAMA National University (YNU) is a Japanese national university founded in 1949. Fujitsu Launches Sustainable 5G vRAN to Deliver Potential Reductions in CO2 Emissions of over 50%

TOKYO, Feb 24, 2022 - (JCN Newswire via SEAPRWire.com) - Fujitsu today announced that it has successfully developed new software virtualized radio access network (vRAN)(1) technology with support for 5G Standalone (SA) and will offer it for verification by telecommunications carriers from March 2022. By leveraging Fujitsu's AI and quantum-inspired "Digital Annealer"(2) technologies to optimize computing resources, the newly developed vRAN technology addresses one of the key challenges of conventional vRANs, delivering high-performance with low-energy consumption. Fujitsu estimates that this approach offers the potential to reduce overall system CO2 emissions by 50% or more compared to conventional base station systems by 2025, while offering users high-quality, stable communications.https://www.fujitsu.com/global/microsite/mwc-2022/CO2 emission reduction of the entire system using this vRANMoving forward, Fujitsu plans to deploy this vRAN technology globally, offering robust and innovative support to telecommunications carriers working to reduce their carbon footprint, and ultimately contribute to the realization of a more sustainable society. Learn more about this at MWC Barcelona 2022 at Fujitsu's Booth 2G60 from February 28, 2022 to March 3, 2022.BackgroundIn recent years, advances including performance improvements in general-purpose CPUs and the virtualization of wireless signal processing and control technology (telecom function) have opened an exciting wide range of new possibilities for technological innovation in communications, including the appearance of vRAN technology. The introduction of vRANs composed of general-purpose servers, which don't require the costly development of specialized hardware, is currently drawing attention as an attractive alternative to conventional base stations.Despite their promise, existing vRAN technology continues to face barriers to wider adoption. For instance, vRANs that are not configured with dedicated equipment tend to have lower performance efficiency than conventional base stations. To maintain the same performance, more hardware must be built in, resulting in higher environmental loads in areas like power consumption. In terms of stability and redundancy, there have also been cases in which conventional vRANs cannot sufficiently guarantee carrier-grade communication quality.Features of Fujitsu's vRANFujitsu's new vRAN technology supports 5G SA and conforms to O-RAN specifications, while leveraging the following proprietary technologies to successfully solve some of the challenges surrounding conventional vRANs. By optimizing the entire 5G wireless network and reducing the amount of equipment and power consumption, Fujitsu's vRAN offers the potential to contribute to significant reductions in the total CO2 emissions throughout carriers' 5G wireless systems.1. Fujitsu's customization approach for high-performance, high-capacity communicationsImproved software control methods for high performance and capacity in communications. Increase communication speed and communication coverage area from two to four times.2. Dynamic resource allocation technologyFujitsu has developed its own dynamic resource allocation technology that reduces excess resources and power consumption by making it possible to flexibly adjust the computing resources of servers needed for operations according to the usage status (traffic volume) of base stations, which varies with region and time of day. By linking the RAN intelligent control unit (RIC)(3), and SMO(4) which orchestrates and manages the entire network, with this technology, mobile phone users' movements and application usage are estimated and optimal resource allocation is achieved.3. Automatic cell re-design technologyIn addition to using AI to predict future traffic fluctuations, this system leverages Fujitsu's quantum-inspired Digital Annealer computing technology to enable optimal allocation of computing resources by rapidly solving problems that are difficult to solve with today's general-purpose computers. NTT and NTT DOCOMO Trial First Use of User-tracking Metasurface Reflector for Extreme Mobile Coverage in Current 5G and Coming 6G Era

TOKYO, Nov 15, 2021 - (JCN Newswire via SEAPRWire.com) - Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corporation (NTT) and NTT DOCOMO, INC. announced what they believe to be the world's first use of a 28-GHz-band 5G base station and a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) metasurface reflector that dynamically redirects radio waves to follow mobile devices as they move in indoor environments for improved indoor communication.Improved signal strength achieved with controlled RISThe RIS is equipped with a user-tracking function to deliver radio waves even in places where the base station antenna is not directly visible due to obstructing objects. The technology is expected to expand the use of high-frequency radio bands in places such as factories and offices. Millimeter waves (28 GHz) used for 5G, and even higher frequencies expected to be used for 6G, travel in very straight (rectilinear) lines, making it difficult for these waves to reach devices that are not in a base station's line of sight. To overcome the problem, one solution is to reflect and redirect the signals, but conventional reflectors can only redirect signals in fixed directions.NTT's new reflection-control technology dynamically controls the direction of reflection according to the receiving device's movements. The technology now has been applied to a millimeter-wave RIS reflector device developed by AGC Inc., making it possible to construct indoor mobile environments in which high-frequency bands can be used for 5G and later-generation mobile communications. The test was conducted at NTT Yokosuka R&D Center, Japan from October 8 to 22. DOCOMO designed the indoor network and operated the base station. The test confirmed that the RIS reflector improves the strength of signals received by a moving receiver. Radio waves sent from a remote base station entered the test room via a window and then the RIS was used to control the reflected direction of the radio waves. The strength of the received 28-GHz signal was improved by up to 20 dB compared to signals received without using a RIS.Going forward, NTT and NTT DOCOMO will continue with verifications aimed at commercializing the new technology to enhance stable indoor coverage for ultra-high-speed wireless communications in the higher frequency bands of 5G, 5G evolution and 6G networks. The RIS reflector will be exhibited at NTT R&D Forum 2021(*), which is being held online from November 11 to 16.(*) NTT R&D FORUM -- Road to IOWN 2021URL: https://www.rd.ntt/e/forum/About Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corporation (NTT)NTT believes in resolving social issues through our business operations by applying technology for good. Two US airbases shortlisted to host new RSAF F-35B aircraft

SINGAPORE - Two airbases in the United States have been shortlisted to host the Republic of Singapore Air Force's (RSAF) next-generation F-35B fighter aircraft and its F-16 training detachment, said the Ministry of Defence (Mindef) in a statement on Friday (May 4). The preferred location is the Ebbing Air National Guard Base at Fort Smith in Arkansas, although Selfridge Air National Guard Base at Harrison Township in Michigan is also an option, should an environmental impact assessment find the Ebbing base unsuitable. The decision was made by the US Defence Department in consultation with Mindef, with the move to be finalised in 2023. The new training centre will have space for up to 36 aircraft, including those purchased by other countries under the US' Foreign Military Sales programme. In March 2019, Singapore announced its plans to buy the elite stealth fighter jets from Lockheed Martin to replace its ageing F-16 fleet, which has been in service since 1998 and will be progressively retired after 2030. The F-35B jets are a pricier variant of the standard F-35 model, and are able to take off from shorter runways and land vertically. The Republic expects to take delivery of four F-35B aircraft in 2026. All four will be deployed in the US for training and in-depth evaluation. Mindef has said previously that it will evaluate the F-35s fully before deciding to commit to a further eight aircraft. In Friday's statement, Mindef said Ebbing Air National Guard Base was shortlisted following careful feasibility studies on both sides. This included looking at factors such as suitability of location and training area, as well as infrastructure and logistics support. Locating the F-35Bs in the same place as the F-16s - which are currently based at Luke Air Force Base in Arizona - will maximise opportunities for integrated training, it added. The US Air Force (USAF) added in a separate statement that ramp and airspace capacity at the Arizona base limit expansion. "The F-35 programme is a multi-service, multinational effort that dramatically increases interoperability between the US and other F-35 partner nations," said acting Secretary of the Air Force John P. Roth. He added that the USAF is "fully committed" to the F-35 as the cornerstone of its fighter fleet and looks forward to building stronger relationships with nations who want to work by its side. Mindef also said that the RSAF looks forward to enhanced joint training and exchanges with F-35Bs from the USAF and US Marine Corps. "Such overseas training is important for the Singapore Armed Forces to overcome local airspace constraints and to conduct high-end realistic training." The RSAF currently has two other training detachments in the US - one in Idaho for its F-15SG fighters and another in Arizona for Apache helicopters. Another fighter training detachment at Andersen Air Force Base in Guam is expected to be established by 2029. Both countries also conduct regular military-to-military exchanges and training and courses, and also cooperate on defence technology.
