Showa Denko Develops Neural Network Models to Predict Mechanical Properties of Aluminum Alloys Accurately

TOKYO, Dec 2, 2021 - (JCN Newswire via SEAPRWire.com) - Showa Denko K.K. (SDK; TSE: 4004) has developed neural network models*1 to predict mechanical properties of 2000-series aluminum alloys*2 from their design conditions with high accuracy in collaboration with National Institute for Material Science (NIMS) and The University of Tokyo (UTokyo). The developed models enable us to accelerate the process to explore optimal compositions and heat-treatment conditions for aluminum alloys that can maintain strength at high temperatures and shorten development time for aluminum alloys to about half to one-third of that with conventional development method, which was not easy in the past.Aluminum has various applications because it is lighter than iron and easy to work. However, it is usually used as an aluminum alloy containing copper, magnesium and other additive elements because pure aluminum has low strength. The development of aluminum alloys that can maintain sufficient strength for a particular use at high temperatures is desired because conventional aluminum alloys lose strength when their temperature rises to 100 degrees Celsius or higher. However, the mechanical properties of aluminum alloys depend on many process factors, including many kinds of additive elements and heat-treatment conditions. Developing high-performance aluminum alloys usually takes time because designing aluminum alloys requires developers' knowledge-rich experience and repetition of analysis and evaluation.Aiming to solve these problems, SDK has been taking part in a project under Council for Science, Technology and Innovation (CSTI), Cross-ministerial Strategic Innovation Promotion Program (SIP), "Materials Integration" for Revolutionary Design System of Structural Materials. In this Development, SDK, NIMS, and UTokyo have collaboratively developed a computer system using neural networks, an artificial intelligence (AI) algorithm, to accelerate the development of materials and explore globally for aluminum-alloy designing conditions that realize optimal mechanical properties. In this development, we focused on 2000-series aluminum alloys, utilized design data of 410 records of aluminum alloys listed in public databases, including the Japan Aluminum Association, and developed neural network models that accurately predict the strength of aluminum alloys at various temperatures ranging from room temperature to high temperature. In addition, we optimized the architecture and parameters of the neural network with Bayesian inference*3 by applying the replica-exchange Monte Carlo Method*4. As a result, it became possible for us to evaluate aluminum alloy strength and its prediction uncertainty. Moreover, this neural network model can estimate the strengths of aluminum alloys under 10,000 different conditions within 2 seconds. Thus it became possible to evaluate aluminum alloys with various design factors comprehensively in a short time.Furthermore, we successfully developed "an inverse design tool," which suggests a set of aluminum-alloy design conditions that maximizes the probability of satisfying the desired strength at arbitrary temperature. Thus it enables us to design high-strength aluminum alloys at high temperatures above 200 degrees Celsius. In its "Long-term Vision for Newly Integrated Company," the Showa Denko Group has announced that it will continue committing itself to make the most of artificial intelligence and computational science, which is the core of its fundamental research activities. We will accelerate our material development programs by applying the results of this Development to our activities to develop various new materials, and provide our customers with solutions for their problems, thereby contributing to the prosperity of society.Detail of the results of this Development will be presented at the virtual session of the 2021 Materials Research Society*5 Fall Meeting, which will be held from December 6 to 8 in the United States and broadcasted to the world via the Internet.*1. Neural network model: Neural network model is a machine learning algorithm that imitates the human brain's neural network. A typical neural network model has input, hidden, and output layers. The existence of a hidden layer enables a neural network model to learn and estimate relationships between the input and output of complicated events. Statistical machine learning with neural network models with many hidden layers is called "deep learning."*2. 2000-series aluminum alloys: 2000-series aluminum alloys contain copper and magnesium as additive elements, and have high mechanical strength. Duralumin and super duralumin are well-known 2000-series aluminum alloys. 2000-series aluminum alloys are used as materials for the bodies of aircrafts and industrial parts (screws, gears and rivets, etc.).*3. Bayesian inference: Bayesian inference is a method of statistical inference that statistically infers causes from observed facts based on Bayes' theorem. In this Development, we constructed neural network models that reproduce correlation between design conditions and mechanical properties of aluminum alloys with Bayesian inference.*4. Replica-exchange Monte Carlo Method: Replica-exchange Monte Carlo Method is one of the computational methods to simulate Bayesian inference with a computer. It is known to converge to a global minimum solution faster than other methods when solving multimodal problems with many local minimum solutions. This enables us to explore a wide range of parameter space efficiently to find the optimal solution.*5. Materials Research Society: Materials Research Society is an academic society focusing on material science, established in the United Stated in 1973. It convenes general meetings twice a year, in spring and fall.About Showa Denko K.K.Showa Denko K.K. Showa Denko Installs Additional Lines to Produce Aluminum Heat Radiators for xEVs

TOKYO, Jul 29, 2021 - (JCN Newswire via SEAPRWire.com) - Showa Denko K.K. (SDK; TSE:4004) decided to double Oyama Plant's capacity to produce aluminum heat radiators for power modules (PMs)[1] to be installed in electrified vehicles (xEVs) including battery electric vehicles, hybrid vehicles and plug-in hybrid vehicles, in order to respond to an increase in demand for aluminum heat radiators for PMs. SDK has started installation of the additional production line whose start-up of operation is scheduled to be at the beginning of 2022.Aluminum heat radiator for PMPMs are important parts of xEVs and contribute to the improvement in the performance of xEVs. For example, PMs contribute to extension of cruising range and improvement in fuel economy of cars. PMs are usually installed into limited spaces of xEVs. Therefore, heat radiators for PMs must be small, be designed to allow various installation methods, and have high energy efficiency and large heat dissipation capacity.Aluminum heat radiators for PMs produced by SDK adopt direct vacuum brazing[2] between insulated substrates and other parts including aluminum fins produced by SDK. Therefore, SDK's aluminum heat radiators for PMs are small, have large heat dissipation capacity, and allow free design of coolant pipes, thereby having a multiplicity of uses. SDK started to produce aluminum heat radiators for PMs in 2019. SDK's aluminum heat radiators are put into PMs by a large PM manufacturer in Japan, and those PMs are installed in xEVs assembled by various car manufacturers operating in Japan and other Asian countries.Backed by the global movement toward realization of carbon neutral society, the automobile industry is accelerating its shift toward xEVs. Therefore, the market for aluminum heat radiators for PMs is expected to expand further. SDK will develop and produce smaller high-performance aluminum heat radiators for PMs on the basis of its long-time fostered aluminum-alloy design technology, aluminum processing technology and power-module evaluation technology, and provide customers with solutions for their problems, thereby expanding its aluminum specialty components business.[1] Power module (PM) is a part of electronic device. It consists of several power semiconductor chips, and supplies electronic power to an electronic device. PM with good efficiency improves xEVs' performance.[2] Vacuum brazing joints parts without melting basic materials. Vacuum brazing is suitable for jointing of precision parts because inside of the furnace is vacuum and fine control of inside temperature is possible.About Showa Denko K.K.Showa Denko K.K. (SDK; TSE:4004) has started full-scale marketing of ST60-HSM aluminum alloy board[1], which has high heat conductivity and high strength, for use as on-board bus bar[2]. In 2021, SDK started to provide several automotive parts manufacturers with samples of ST60-HSM aluminum-alloy boards to be used as on-board bus bars.ST60-HSM developed by SDK is an aluminum alloy board that has high heat conductivity equivalent to that of pure aluminum and high strength equivalent to that of 6061 aluminum alloy[3], and is used as chassis of backlit LCDs for PCs.Due to the global movement towards carbon neutrality, the auto industry is accelerating its shift to electric vehicles including hybrid, plug-in hybrid and EVs. In addition, the industry promotes unit weight reduction in order to improve fuel efficiency and increase travelable distance. The industry is aggressively shifting from copper- to aluminum-alloy-based equipment for various components including wiring harnesses and bus bars.SDK's ST60-HSM is an aluminum alloy board that has high heat conductivity, high strength and high electric conductivity, and also has high fatigue strength and high heat-resisting property that are required for on-board bus bar. Aluminum bus bar made of ST60-HSM is 43% lighter than conventional copper bus bar[4], and also contributes to cost reduction because the new aluminum bus bar is priced lower than conventional copper bus bar.On the basis of technologies to design and process aluminum alloys cultivated through operation of many years, SDK will aim to maximize the value of customers' experience by providing solutions for them, thereby expanding the Showa Denko Group's aluminum rolled products business.[1] ST60-HSM(TM): ST60 is an aluminum alloy board developed by SDK in 2001, and has as much heat conductivity as pure aluminum and as much strength as 5052 aluminum alloy, which is a typical structural material. ST60-HSM has relatively high strength and plasticity among ST60 series aluminum alloy, has as much tensile strength as 6061 aluminum alloy, and is used for internal chassis of smartphones and tablets and metal base of their cases. Showa Denko K.K. Announces Execution of Master Agreement regarding Series of Transactions

TOKYO, Jan 28, 2021 - (JCN Newswire) - This is to announce that the Company has decided to execute a master agreement (hereinafter referred to as the "Master Agreement") with a special-purpose company formed by funds managed by affiliates of Apollo Global Management, Inc. (collectively, hereinafter referred to as "Apollo"), regarding a series of transactions, including the succession of the aluminum can business of the Company to Showa Aluminum Can Corp., which is a wholly owned consolidated subsidiary of the Company (hereinafter referred to as "Showa Aluminum Can"), and the succession of the aluminum rolling business to Showa Denko Sakai Aluminum Corp., which is a wholly owned non-consolidated subsidiary of the Company (hereinafter referred to as "Showa Denko Sakai Aluminum"), by company splits (absorption-type company split), with tentative effective dates of June 1 2021 and August 2 2021, respectively. Following the completion of the series of transactions under the Master Agreement, Showa Aluminum Can is expected to no longer be consolidated subsidiary of the Company, and be succeeded by Apollo as an independent company. It should be noted that because the company splits will be a simplified absorption-type company splits (kani kyushu-bunkatsu) between the Company and its wholly owned subsidiaries, some disclosure items and details have been omitted from this press release.1. Objectives of the Company Splits and the Series of TransactionsThe aluminum can business of the Company has provided high quality aluminum cans for beverages through an integrated process extending from the molding of can bodies and lids to printing, Showa Aluminum Can, which is a consolidated subsidiary of the Company, started to manufacture aluminum cans for beverages in 1971, becoming the first company in Japan to do so. In 2014, the Company acquired shares of Hanacans Joint Stock Company in Vietnam, and has been developing its business in the rapidly growing Vietnamese aluminum can market. In the domestic aluminum can market, although demand for alcoholic beverage cans has been stable with increasing demand for non-beer alcoholic beverages, there has been a significant decrease in demand for non-alcoholic beverage cans due to their replacement with PET bottles. It is expected that the business environment will continue to be challenging in the future. In order to respond to such changes in the domestic market, the Company has been working to strengthen its domestic business base, including by optimizing production capacity at its domestic production bases in June 2020.On the other hand, the Vietnamese aluminum can market is expected to see continued strong demand for beverage consumption in the future as well, and the Company, in July 2020, completed its third manufacturing facility in Vietnam, and has established a three-base system covering all of northern, central, and southern Vietnam. In the future, the Company is planning further growth by actively exploring opportunities to expand its business around the world, including in Vietnam, while promoting and strengthening its business foundation and aiming to stabilize profits in Japan. The aluminum rolling business of the Company commenced operations as Takada Aluminum Instrument Factory in 1933, later had its name changed to Showa Aluminum Corp., and then became the Sakai office of the Company in 2001. At present, the Company produces high purity aluminum foil for aluminum electrolytic capacitors, as well as aluminum plates that are used for building materials as well as cap and printed base materials. The high purity aluminum foil produced by the Company has strength in high-end products with high capacity and high strength, and the Company has the number one market share of sales in the global high purity aluminum foil for aluminum electrolytic capacitor market. In 2013, the Company established Showa Denko Aluminum (Nantong) Co., Ltd. in Nantong, China, and has built a manufacturing and sales system of stable supply of high quality, high purity aluminum foil for the rapidly growing Chinese market.Aluminum electrolytic capacitors are widely used in a range of fields from home appliances to IT equipment, electric vehicles and hybrid vehicles, as well as in the new energy sector, and demand is expected to grow, particularly in the environmental and energy sectors. As the market is expected to grow in the medium to long term in China in particular, the Company shall continue to further improve profitability by maintaining its technological superiority and strengthening its cost competitiveness. As set forth in the Long-term Vision for Newly Integrated Company published on December 10, 2020, the Company is aiming to become a world-class functional chemical manufacturer by combining the materials and know-how of the group in such pioneering fields as semiconductors and automobiles. In light of the rapidly changing business environment, the Company has been examining the optimal allocation of management resources and portfolio management to realize sustainable growth. After careful consideration of all available options, the Company reached the conclusion that the expansion of the aluminum can business and the aluminum rolling business would be best achieved through business partners that have specialized knowledge and management resources to enable future growth of these businesses together with the employees engaged in the respective business. Taking these factors into consideration, the Company decided to execute the transactions set forth in the Master Agreement with Apollo, which is one of the world's leading alternative investment managers and has a wealth of experience supporting aluminum-related industries for more than 20 years. The Company is confident that the active and strategic support based on Apollo's management resources, the aluminum can business and aluminum rolling business will be well positioned to execute its business strategies in a flexible and bold manner as independent companies to further growth and improve competitiveness.2. SDK to increase capacity of aluminum substrate for hard disks

TOKYO, Jan 14, 2021 - (JCN Newswire) - Showa Denko K.K. (SDK; TOKYO:4004) will increase its capacity to produce aluminum substrate for HD media through consolidated subsidiary Showa Denko HD Yamagata K.K. (SHDY), raising the group's production capacity by 30% and thereby strengthening its hard disk (HD) business.SDK's policy decision to increase supply capacity and diversify and strengthen its supply chain has been qualified by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) as eligible for subsidy under the government's "Program for Promoting Investment to Strengthen Supply Chains in Japan ".With the launch of 5th generation mobile communication (5G) service, the spread of the Internet of Things (IoT), the penetration of telework, and the development and expansion of digital transformation, the volume of data communication is expected to continue to increase dramatically. As a result, the demand for hard disk drives (HDDs) for data centres has been growing significantly. As most of our supply capacity is concentrated in Malaysia, it is necessary to secure a more stable supply chain against the spread of the new coronavirus worldwide. In order to solve this problem, we have decided to expand our aluminum substrate production capacity at SHDY, our domestic base, in order to increase our supply capacity and to further diversify and strengthen our supply chain. Construction of the new facility will begin in February 2021, with mass production scheduled to commence in early 2022.The Group's vision is to become a KOSEIHA company (an alliance of KOSEIHA businesses that can maintain a high level of profitability and stability over time), and the HD business is one of our KOSEIHA businesses. As the world's largest external HD media manufacturer, we will continue to support an ever-expanding and evolving digital society and expand our business by rapidly introducing world-class products to the market under the motto of "Best in Class".
