Football: West Ham ease to third successive win in Europa League, Napoli sink Legia

LONDON (REUTERS) - West Ham United moved closer to the Europa League knockout stage as goals from Craig Dawson, Issa Diop and Jarrod Bowen secured a 3-0 home win over Belgium's Genk on Thursday (Oct 21) and continued their perfect start in Group H. West Ham top the standings on nine points ahead of Dinamo Zagreb, Rapid Vienna and Genk who have three each, after the London side kept a third successive clean sheet in Europe's second-tier competition. Dawson fired West Ham ahead with a looping header on the stroke of halftime and Diop made it 2-0 from a second assist by Aaron Cresswell before Bowen added the third with a deflected shot on the hour. Napoli kept alive their hopes of advancing from Group C after Lorenzo Insigne, Victor Osimhen and Matteo Politano secured a 3-0 home win over Legia Warsaw. Legia stayed top with six points from three games while Napoli and Leicester City, who enjoyed a rollercoaster 4-3 win at Spartak Moscow on Wednesday, have four each. Fourth-placed Spartak have three points. Insigne fired Napoli ahead in the 75th minute with a superb first-time shot before in-form Osimhen netted his ninth goal of the season in all competitions and Politano sealed the win with a long-range strike. Olympique Lyonnais maintained their perfect start in Group A as they overturned a two-goal deficit for a 4-3 win at Sparta Prague, who took a 2-0 lead thanks to a first-half brace from Lukas Haraslin. Lyon hit back as Karl Toko Ekambi scored twice while Houssem Aouar and Lucas Paqueta added one each before Ladislav Krejci pulled one back in stoppage time. Lyon stayed top on nine points ahead of Sparta on four and Rangers, who have three after beating Brondby 2-0 at home thanks to first-half goals from Leon Balgoun and Kemar Roofe. In Group D, Eintracht Frankfurt leapt into pole position on seven points, one ahead of Olympiakos after a 3-1 home win over the Greek side. Both teams are well-placed to progress as third-placed Fenerbahce have two points and Royal Antwerp one after their 2-2 draw. Monaco went top of Group B on seven points from three games with a 2-1 win at PSV Eindhoven and Real Sociedad are two points behind after a 1-0 victory at Sturm Graz.

Football: Lewandowski scores twice as Bayern beat Dortmund in Super Cup

BERLIN (AFP) - Robert Lewandowski netted twice as Bayern Munich retained the German Super Cup with a 3-1 win at Borussia Dortmund on Tuesday (Aug 17) in a high-tempo encounter. Lewandowski put Bayern ahead with a bullet header at Signal Iduna Park before Thomas Mueller doubled the visitors' lead to make it 2-0 just after the break. Dortmund captain Marco Reus pulled a goal back when he curled a superb shot inside the post before Lewandowski settled the match. The 32-year-old has now scored 24 goals in as many games against Dortmund, where he spent four years from 2010-2014. "This means a lot to me. We've won our next title and for the spectators it must have been a really cool game to watch," Lewandowski told Sky. "It's something really great for the team which we can enjoy." Bayern have now won all of their last six matches against Dortmund. It was a welcome victory for Bayern, who were winless in four pre-season friendlies before drawing last Friday's opening game of the new Bundesliga season 1-1 at Borussia Moenchengladbach. New coach Julian Nagelsmann has earned a trophy, which Bayern also won last year against Dortmund in Munich, with his first win in charge. "We were better than in Gladbach and this is an important win for the lads," said Nagelsmann, who hailed Lewandowski's "exceptional" performance. It was a frustrating game for Erling Braut Haaland and 16-year-old Dortmund striker Youssoufa Moukoko, who each had goals ruled offside. Both teams wore black armbands out of respect for legendary Bayern striker Gerd Mueller, who died Sunday aged 75. During the warm-up, the Bayern squad wore shirts with Mueller's name and number 9 on the back. Steady rain did little to dampen the electric atmosphere as tempers quickly became frayed, with three yellow cards dished out in the first half. Dortmund had the best early chance when England midfielder Jude Bellingham threaded a pass through the defence to Reus on 20 minutes, but Bayern goalkeeper Manuel Neuer blocked the shot with his foot. Moukoko then had the ball in the net on 36 minutes from a Haaland pass, only to be denied by an offside flag. Lewandowski put Bayern ahead four minutes before the break, perfectly timing his run into the box to head home a pin-point Serge Gnabry cross. Bayern extended their advantage four minutes into the second half when Lewandowski failed to connect with an Alphonso Davies cross and Mueller swept in the loose ball. Haaland beat Neuer three minutes later, but his effort was also chalked off. However, Dortmund pulled a goal back when Bellingham spotted Reus in space and he unleashed an excellent strike into the corner with 26 minutes to go. However, Lewandowski ended the tie as a contest, after Bayern capitalised on a rare mistake in the Dortmund defence. Centre-back Manuel Akanji played a lazy pass which was snapped up and worked to Lewandowski, who slotted home, taking the wind out of Dortmund in the 74th minute.

Football: Czechs beat Albania 3-1 in last Euro 2020 warm-up

PRAGUE (REUTERS) - Second-half goals from Lukas Masopust and Ondrej Celustka gave the Czech Republic a 3-1 win over a battling Albania side on Tuesday (June 8) in their final Euro 2020 warm-up before taking on Scotland in their opening match. Czech coach Jaroslav Silhavy made four changes to his side ahead of their Group D opener on Monday as the hosts rebounded from a 4-0 thrashing at the hands of Italy in their previous match. Leverkusen forward Patrik Schick put the Czechs ahead in the 18th minute when he beat the Albanian keeper with a left-footed volley after connecting with a Masopust cross. "The cross was key, it connected with my step nicely," Schick said, praising his team for sticking to their game plan. "We had a plan, they defended quite closely... we stuck (to the plan), they had just one shot in the first half, hit it well," he said, referring to the visitors' equaliser. Albania levelled in the 42nd minute through Konyaspor striker Sokol Cikalleshi's sublime long-range effort that gave Sevilla goalkeeper Tomas Vaclik no chance. Slavia midfielder Masopust put the Czechs ahead in the 68th minute before Sparta centre back Celustka scored their third in the 89th. The Czechs - appearing in their seventh consecutive European Championship finals - face a challenge to get out of a tough group that also includes England, Scotland and 2018 World Cup finalists Croatia.

Football: England manager Southgate to name provisional extended squad

LONDON (REUTERS) - England coach Gareth Southgate will name a provisional extended squad ahead of Euro 2020, the FA said on Monday. A tweet from the official England account said Southgate would announce the squad before speaking to the media at 2pm local time on Tuesday (May 25). The group will then be reduced to 26 players ahead of the June 1 deadline for squads to be submitted to Uefa ahead of the June 11-July 11 tournament being held across Europe. While the FA did not confirm the size of the squad Southgate is likely to name, various local media reports suggested it could contain more than 30 players. It is believed Southgate's decision is to allow for key players such as Harry Maguire and Jordan Henderson every chance to prove their fitness as they recover from injury. It also factors in the number of England players involved in Wednesday's Europa League final between Manchester United and Villarreal, as well as Saturday's Champions League final between Chelsea and Manchester City. Other nations, including the Netherlands and Italy, have named extended squads that will then be whittled down, while others, such as Spain, have not used their full allocation of 26 players available to them. England face Austria and Romania in friendlies in the first week of June, before their Euro 2020 Group D campaign starts with games against Croatia, Scotland and Czech Republic.

Motor racing: Verstappen puts Red Bull on pole in Bahrain with Hamilton behind him

(REUTERS, AFP) - Dutchman Max Verstappen put Red Bull on pole position for Formula One's season-opening Bahrain Grand Prix on Saturday (March 27), with seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton alongside on the front row for Mercedes. It was the first time in the sport's V6 turbo hybrid era that began in 2014 that Mercedes, winners of the drivers' and constructors' championships for the past seven years, had not taken pole for the first race. Verstappen, who has 10 race wins, took his fourth career pole in 1min 28.997sec to outpace Hamilton by 0.338 of a second with the Briton ahead of Finn Valtteri Bottas in the second Mercedes. "It all worked out perfectly," said the 23-year-old, rated the main obstacle to Hamilton's quest for an eighth title. Charles Leclerc was fourth for Ferrari ahead of Pierre Gasly of AlphaTauri and the McLarens of Daniel Ricciardo and Lando Norris. Carlos Sainz was eighth in the second Ferrari ahead of two-time champion Fernando Alonso, on his return to F1 with the Alpine team, and Lance Stroll, who was 10th for Aston Martin. Stroll’s new team-mate four-time champion Sebastian Vettel struggled and qualified 18th, failing to make it out of Q1. “Of course, we had a great test last week, but there are no guarantees here,” said a smiling Verstappen. ‘Great start’ “The car worked really well and it was enjoyable to drive. It’s a great start.” Hamilton, who showed much-improved speed compared to the pre-season test, congratulated his rival. “He was so fast on that last lap. I gave it everything, but it wasn’t enough. “There is always more, but that was the best I could do in getting it out of my car.” Verstappen said he felt confident in the long run performance of his car. “I am looking forward to the race. I’ve got a good car and just hope for a good clean start. I’ll keep on pushing.” After a hot day at the Bahrain International Circuit, the track temperature was 35 deg C and the air was 30 as the floodlit session began with George Russell of Williams leading the way. He pitted immediately without logging a time and it was left to Mick Schumacher to take that honour, in the process putting the letters MSC on top of the lists for the first time since his father seven-time champion Michael retired in 2012. The usual suspects were soon joining in with Hamilton and then Verstappen going top before Japanese rookie Yuki Tsunoda split them in his AlphaTauri to take second with an impressive lap. At 20, the feisty Tsunoda is the first driver born this century to race in F1 and he made an immediate impact. Encouraged by his early speed, Hamilton chose a set of worn tyres for his second run while Verstappen rued some damage to his car after running over a kerb. At the top it remained unchanged, but there was a shock among those taking an early exit with Vettel eliminated in 18th along with Alpine’s Esteban Ocon, Williams’ Nicholas Latifi, and the Haas pairing of rookies Schumacher and Nikita Mazepin. Maranello new boy Sainz squeezed through in P15, but his engine cut out as he limped back to the pits before Q2 began with the leaders running on mediums. Hamilton topped the first runs with a three-tenths advantage on Verstappen ahead of Bottas while Red Bull’s Sergio Perez and Ricciardo, still adjusting to their new teams and cars, lost their laps by running off at Turn 4. The second runs saw Ferrari, choosing to run on softs, sweep to the front with Leclerc and then Sainz going fastest, ahead of Hamilton, Norris and Bottas on mediums. The Ferrari pair represented the Italian giants' youngest line-up since 1968 and have clearly reinvigorated the Italian team. Verstappen secured his place in the top-10 shoot-out in seventh but Perez missed the cut in 11th. Tsunoda qualified 13th. Q3 began with Gasly setting the pace before Hamilton went top until Verstappen, hunting him down, beat his time by just 0.023sec. Bottas was fourth behind Gasly and Sainz fifth. Bottas led the train ahead of Hamilton for the final run, but neither could stop Verstappen who delivered an emphatic final flying lap.

Football: Rashford inspires Manchester United to 3-1 win over Newcastle

MANCHESTER (REUTERS) - An impressive individual performance from Marcus Rashford steered Manchester United to a 3-1 home win over Newcastle United in the Premier League on Sunday (Feb 21) as the England forward scored one goal and had a hand in another. United moved back into second spot on 49 points from 25 games, 10 behind leaders Manchester City and ahead of third-placed Leicester City on goal difference. Newcastle stayed 17th on 25 points, three ahead of Fulham who occupy the last relegation spot, after an eighth league defeat in 10 games. Rashford fired United ahead out of the blue in the 30th minute when he twice beat defender Emil Krafth with neat footwork before firing a crisp low shot past goalkeeper Karl Darlow inside the near post. The visitors, who had looked more likely to break the deadlock, hit back six minutes later when Allan Saint-Maximin took advantage of a poor clearance by Harry Maguire and swept the ball into the roof of the net. United still looked unconvincing in the early stages of the second half but struck from out of nowhere in the 57th minute as a Nemanja Matic pass was touched on by Bruno Fernandes to Daniel James who rifled the ball past Darlow from eight metres. Fernandes sealed United's win with a 74th-minute penalty awarded when Joe Willock tripped Rashford after he bedazzled the Newcastle player with sublime close control in the area.

Football: Leicester go second with 2-0 win over Southampton

LEICESTER, ENGLAND (REUTERS) - Leicester City moved above champions Liverpool into second place in the Premier League after James Maddison's first-half goal and a stoppage-time effort by Harvey Barnes secured them a 2-0 home win over Southampton on Saturday (Jan 16). Maddison lashed a ferocious shot past Alex McCarthy in the 37th-minute of an even first period and Barnes broke clear to finish coolly as Leicester claimed only their fourth home victory of the season. While all eyes will be on Sunday's showdown between Liverpool and leaders Manchester United, Leicester showed again that they must be taken seriously in the title race. Brendan Rodgers's side have 35 points from 18 games, one point behind United and two better off than Liverpool. Manchester City, who also slipped below Leicester ahead of their Sunday clash with Crystal Palace, have 32. Leicester did not have things all their own way though and eighth-placed Southampton, who beat Liverpool in their last game, were unlucky when Stuart Armstrong's long-range effort rattled the crossbar as the visitors pressed for an equaliser.
