PRAGUE (AFP)- Czech football legend Antonin Panenka, known for his trademark penalty kick, has been discharged from hospital after a Covid-19 scare, his former club said on Wednesday (Oct 14), citing his son. "I picked up dad at the hospital at 11am today and took him home," Tomas Panenka told the website of the Prague-based Bohemians 1905 club of which his father is the president. A former Bohemians and Rapid Vienna playmaker, the 71-year-old Panenka was put in intensive care in a serious condition last week after testing positive for the coronavirus. "He has now tested negative. He is still suffering from pneumonia, but doctors said he didn't have to stay in hospital and released him," Tomas Panenka said. Panenka senior gained fame after winning the Euro 1976 final for Czechoslovakia with a cheeky decisive penalty against Germany in the shoot-out after a 2-2 extra-time draw. Instead of blasting it into the net, Panenka fooled the diving German goalkeeper Sepp Maier by chipping the ball into the middle of the net. The technique referred to as a "Panenka" has since been used by greats such as Zinedine Zidane, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Andrea Pirlo. The Czech Republic - a successor state to Czechoslovakia alongside Slovakia - currently registers a record growth in Covid-19 infections and ranks among the European Union's worst-affected countries. The EU member of 10.7 million people had more than 8,000 new cases on Tuesday. Since the March outbreak, it has registered almost 130,000 confirmed cases and 1,106 deaths. TOKYO (AFP) - Japan's top Olympic swimmer Daiya Seto has been barred from competitions and official training until the end of the year as punishment for an affair exposed by a tabloid. The star athlete was caught on camera in September by a gossip magazine, which chronicled the married 26-year-old's movements as he picked up his girlfriend, took her to a "love hotel", then went to pick up his daughter from nursery. Seto apologised for his "irresponsible behaviour" in a statement on Tuesday (Oct 13), saying he accepted the sanctions from the Japan Swimming Federation, which include events at home and abroad. It means that Seto - the reigning world champion in the 200m and 400m individual medley - will miss a national competition in December. But he will still be allowed to take part in the Tokyo Olympics next summer and can also practise in private, the swimming federation said. Seto will also have to complete the Japan Olympic Committee's "integrity education" programme among other courses, according to his management. "I intend to sincerely give my full attention to swimming... so that I may regain the trust of my family, whom I hurt deeply with my irresponsible behaviour, and regain the acceptance of my family as well as all of you as a swimmer," Seto said in his statement. The tabloid expose and the federation's punishment has become a subject of lively discussion on daytime TV talk shows, where Seto is not a usual subject. Japanese swimming officials told local media that Seto's actions had violated the code of sportsmanship and harmed the honour of the federation. AUCKLAND (REUTERS) - New Zealand have cancelled their friendly international against England at Wembley Stadium next month citing player unavailability and travel restrictions arising from the novel coronavirus pandemic. The match was due to take place on Nov 12. "It is not an action taken lightly, this is a match we all wanted to play, however, as it stands... a significant number of the team would be subject to quarantine or restrictions on their return home," NZ Football CEO Andrew Pragnell said. "This would heavily disrupt their domestic seasons and potentially jeopardise their professional careers. "The shifting nature of travel restrictions and commercial flight availability under Covid means that we do not have certainty we could assemble a squad at Wembley on this day and defaulting on this fixture at the last minute is not an option." Pragnell said New Zealand would now look forward to the March 2021 international window as they begin their qualifying campaign for the World Cup in 2022.
